13 Chapter 2 Inst allation Before Y ou Begin S t andard Rack Mounting A standard rack mounting kit is provided with your KL9108 / KL9116. The kit enables the switch to be mounted in a rack with a depth of 42–77 cm. Note: It takes two people to mount th e switch : one to hold it in place, the other to screw it in.

While the first person st ill holds th e switch in place, the second person slides the L brackets into the switch 's side mounting brackets, from the rear until the bracket flanges contact the rack, then—using the screws provided with the rack moun ting kit— screws the L brackets to the rack.

19 Chapter 3 Basic Operation Opening the Console The KL9108 / KL9116's console consists of tw o mod ules: an LCD display module located under the to p cover; and a keybo ard / touchpad modul e below the LCD module. The modules can either slide together, or i ndependently.

29 Chapter 4 Administration Overview The OSD' s Administration page lets the Admi nistrator (and users wi th administration permission - see User Ma nagement , page 40) configure an d control the overal l operations of the KL91 08 / KL9116. The Administra tion tab is disabled (grayed out) for users who do not have adm ini strat ion permission.

Chapter 4. Administration 31 The OSD consists of four pages, each w ith a specific set of functions: Main, Configuration, Administrat ion, and Log. The Main Page The Main page governs port access. Sel ecting a port and double-clicking it switches yo u to the dev ice on that port.
KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 32 The List Function The List Function lets you broad en or narrow the scope of which ports the OSD displays (lists) in the Main Screen.
Chapter 4. Administration 33 The drop down list on the left offers four fixed choices as shown in the table below: The text input box on the right al low s you to key in a port name so that only port names th at match what you key in show up in t he List.
KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 34 Port Nam es To help remember which computer is at tached to a part icular port, every port can be given a name. This field allows the Administra tor to create, modify, or delete port names. To configure a po rt name: 1. Click once on the port you want to edit, wait one second and then click again.
Chapter 4. Administration 35 After a second or two, the bar changes to provide you with a text inpu t box: 2. Key in the new Port Name, or modify/delete the old one. The maximum number of characters allowed for a Port Name is 19. Y ou can use all letters, numbers, and sy mbols on t he typewr iter keys of keyboards with PC US English layout.

Chapter 4. Administration 37 The Configuration Page The Configuration Page sets the operating parameters for each user. The Configuration Page setting s are the sa me for the local console, the Windows Client and the Java Client. They are discusse d in Chapter 6 (see page 84).

Chapter 4. Administration 39 The Administration Page When you click the Administ rati on tab, the Adm inistration page comes up. Each of the admin istrative functions i s re presented by an icon at the left of the page. Clicking the icon brings up it s associated dialo g box.
KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 40 User Management The User Management dialog box is used to create, delete and manage user profiles. Up to 64 user profiles can be established. T o delete a user profile, select it in the list box, and Click Remove . T o modify a user profile, select it and Click Edit .

Administration 43 Service Configuration Access Port As a security measure, if a firewall is being used, the Admi nistrator can specify the port numbers that the firewall will allow, and set the firewall accordingly. Users must specify the port numb er when they log in to the KL9 108 / KL9116.
KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 44 Log Server Important transactions that occur on th e KL9108 / KL9116, such as logins and internal status messages, are kept in an automatically generated log file. In this panel, you specify the MAC address and a port number for the com put er that the Log Server resides on.
Chapter 4. Administration 45 Network The Network dialog is used to specify the KL9108 / KL911 6's network environment. The box i s divided into two panels: IP Address and DN S Server. IP Address The KL9108 / KL9116 can either have it s IP address assigned dynamically (DHCP), or it can be given a fixed IP address.
KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 46 RADIUS If you are using a RADIUS server, RADI US Configuration allows you to set up its parameters: 1. Check Enable. 2. Fill in the IP addresses and Servi ce Ports for the Primary and Alternate RADIUS servers.

Chapter 4. Administration 49 Security The Security page controls access to the KL9108 / KL9116. IP and MAC Filters control access to the KL 9108 / KL91 16 from the W indows C lient based on the IP and/ or MAC addresses of the computers attempting to connect.

T o filter a contin uous range of IP addresses, key in the start of the range in the Fr om field; key in th e end of the range in the To field.
Chapter 4. Administration 51 Customization The Customization dialog box is arranged in f our major s ections, as described below: Login Failures Allowed: sets the number of consecutive failed login attempts that are permitted from a remote comp uter .

KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 54 T imeout The Timeout setting applies to ports with the Occupy I/O attribute. It controls the amount of time (0-255 seconds) that el apses before an inactive user is timed out when other users are waiting to take control of the port.

57 Chapter 5 Browser Operation Overview An On Screen Display (OSD) interf ace governs KL9108 / KL9116 computer control and switching operations. The OS D can be accessed remotely with a Windows-based client o r a Java-based client. Y ou must l og in v ia an Internet browser to connect to the KL9 108 / KL9116 and to invoke the OSD.

Once you select a port, its screen displays on y our monitor, and y our keyboard and mouse input affects the remote system.

The KL9108 / KL9116 provid es the following hotkey features: Auto Scanning Skip Mode Switching The hotkeys are: A and P for Auto Scanning; and the Arrow Keys for Skip Mode.

KL9108 / KL9116 User Manual 70 Panel Array Mod e Clicking on the OSD Toolbar's Panel icon invokes Panel Array Mode. Under this mode, the OSD divides your screen into a 4 x 4 gri d of 16 pan els: Each panel represents one of the KL 9108 / K L9116's ports.

Chapter 6. The Windows Client 79 The Message Board The KL9108 / KL9116 supp orts multiple user logins, which can possibly gi ve rise to access conflicts. To alleviate th is problem, a message board feature has been provided, allowing users to communicate w ith each other.

By default, messages are posted to all users. T o post a message to one individual user , select the user's name before sending you r m essage.

The above two chord ed ke y com bin ations are retained on the local system to switch among applicatio ns and to recover from disaster.
