2 Caution • Do not sh or t the batter y or dispose of the batter y in fire. Do not disass emble the battery. The battery could explode or catch fire. • Remove the battery from the camera immediately if the y become hot or begin to smoke. Be car eful not to burn yourself during removal.
3 • Only us e the battery charger D-BC50 supplied with the camera. Do not us e the product at a voltage other than th e specif ied voltage. Use with a power source o r voltage other than that desi gned c an cause a fire or elect r i cal shock. The specifi ed voltage is 100 - 240V AC.
4 • Do not clean the product w ith organic solvents such as thinner or alcohol benzene. • Do not subject the c am era to high te mperatures or high humidity. Do not leave the camera in a vehi cle, as the temperature can get very high. • Do not store the camera wi th pr eservatives and chemicals.

54 Basic Oper ations 3 Basic Sh ooting Ope ration How you hold the camera is important when taking pictures. • Hold the camera firmly with both ha nds.
55 Basic Oper ations 3 The u features various Capture mod es, Focus modes, and Drive modes s uited for your i ntentions. This section explains how to take pictures by sim ply pres sing the shutte r release bu tton. 1 Set th e m od e dial to B . The Exposure mode changes to B (Green) mode.

58 Basic Oper ations 3 The aut ofocus mechanism i s not perfect. Focusing may be difficult when taking pictures under t he following conditions ((a) to (f) belo w). These al so apply t o manual focusing using the foc us indicat or ] in the viewfinder.
59 Basic Oper ations 3 Using a Zoom Lens Enlarg e t he subject (telephoto) or capture a wider area (wide angle) with a zoom lens. Adjust it to the d es ired s i ze and take the picture. 1 Turn the zoom ring to t he right or left. Turn the zoom ring c lockwise for telephoto and counter clockwise for wide angle.
60 Basic Oper ations 3 Using the Built-in Flash If you wish to discharge the flash in a dark or backlit locat i on, press the K button to p op up the flash.

64 Basic Oper ations 3 “Red-e ye” is the phe nomenon where eyes l ook redd ish i n photo graphs taken in dark environm ents with a flash. This is caused by the reflection of the electronic flash in the retina of t he eye. Red-eye occurs because pupils are dil ated i n da rk environm ents.

Dynamic range is the ratio that indicates the light level expressed by the CMOS s ensor pixels from bright areas to dark areas.

The depth of fi eld i s deepe r and t he front and back o f the focused object is clea r when a perture is set to a large v alue. T he depth of field is shal lower and the front and back of the focused object is bl urred when aperture is set to a sm all value.
