6 6 FEA TURES OF THE smc PENT AX-DA LENS • The smc PE NT AX-DA lens is an inter changeable lens specifica lly designed for digital cameras. Its image cir cle is special ized fo r the i mage sensor (23 .5 x 15.7mm) and it s optical sy stem is optimized for the characte ristics of digital im ages.
7 7 smc PENT AX-D A LENS Note: • The DA lens does not have a n aper ture ring. Aper ture settings are c ontrolled automatical ly as if set to the auto “A ” position, so accessories without an aut o “A” setting cannot be used with this lens. • The D A lens is not compatib le with film SLR cameras.
8 8 About th e D A lens mount The D A lens is an interchangeable lens specifically designed for the PENT AX digital SLR cameras. There are t hree mounts f or the D A lens, the K AF , K AF2 and K AF3 . Refer to the next page for more information on lenses with supersonic motors.
9 9 About lenses with a supersonic moto r The lenses in the table below are equipped with in ter nal supersoni c motors. 11 11 MOUNTING AND REMO VING THE LENS 1. T o mount the lens on the camera body Attach th e lens whil e aligning t he red dots o n the lens a nd body , then t urn the lens clockwise unti l it clicks in place. " Memo: • Do not hold down the lens un lock button while mounti ng the len s, otherwise the lens will not be pr operly mounted.

13 13 Attaching the dedicated lens cap to DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited First screw the dedi cated hood ont o the front of the lens, then screw the lens cap onto the lens hood.
14 14 FOCUSING Changing the Focus Mo de Use the camera’s f ocus mode switch to change between th e autofocus mode and manual focus mode. F or detai ls, refer to y our camera op erating manual.
15 15 Using A utofocus Set the f ocus mode to autof ocus. Pr ess the shutter release b utton halfw ay to a utofo cus. With the , or camera, you can al so press the AF button to au tofocus.
16 16 CA UTION During autof ocusing, t he fo cusing ring of the f ollowing lenses will rotate. • T o prevent malfunction, do not touch the focusing r ing during auto focusing. Particularly be careful when the Focus Mode is s et to AF .C (A F-continuous).
17 17 Using Man ual Focus Set the focus mode to MF , and tur n the focusing r ing to focus manually . See page 14 f or inform ation about ch anging the focus mode. Using the Quick-Shift Focus System If the focus mode is set to autofocus, you can focus manually after autofocus is achi ev ed.
18 18 How to use the Quick-Shift Focus System 1. Using Autofocus Set the f ocus mode s witch to autof ocus, then press the sh utter release b utton halfw ay to autof ocus.
19 19 CA UTION • When usin g the Quick-Shift Focus System, keep pressing t he shutter release button (or AF button) after you achieve f ocus an d before taking a p icture. If you let go of the shutter r elease button before taking the pictur e, autofocus will operate al l over again when you press the shut ter releas e button again.
20 20 DA 200mm f/2.8ED [IF] SDM, DA 300mm f/4ED [IF] SDM focusing • The mechanism d oes not allow the angle of rotation of the focusing r ing and the dist ance scale to al ign while focusing. Al wa ys check the focus using the view finder before taking a picture.

24 24 About the zoom lock switch The DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3ED AL [IF ] is equipped wit h a zoom ring lock. This prevents the lens from extending u nder its own weight while you are ca rr ying the camera. 1. Set the zoom r ing to the widest angle (18mm).

34 34 Attaching a filter and the dedicated lens ho od to the D A 70mm f/2.4 Limited lens With the D A 70mm f/2.4 Limited le ns, attach the 49mm diameter filter to the fron t of the lens. T o use it together with the dedica ted lens hood, screw it on ov er the filte r that is attached.
35 35 Circular polarizing filters and vignetting Circular po larizing filters are t hick er than regular fil ters. Dep ending on the lens th at is mounted and th e shooting conditi ons, vigne tting may occur in the f our corners of the i mage.

40 40 PRECA UTION S WHEN USING THE LENS WITH A FLASH Built-in Flash The bu ilt-in flash can not be used when the distance is le ss than 0.7m. When th e flash is used withi n 0.7m, it ca uses incorr ect exposure control and vignet ting in th e picture cor ners.
41 41 z D A 12-24mm f/4ED AL [IF] PENT AX e xternal flash units which cov er a 24mm lens on a 35mm SLR, or 16mm lens on a digital SLR, can be used when the le ns is set from 16mm to 24mm. AF540FGZ and AF360FGZ can be used from 13mm to 24mm with the wide angle pan el (In both case s, it is poss ible to use th e lens hood ).

44 44 TRIPOD MOUNT DA 300mm f/4ED [IF] SDM is equipped with the tripod mount. T o position the ca mera vertically or horizont ally , loosen the camera position sh ift lock scre w , tur n the camera 90° to the right or left as desired, and tigh ten the loc k screw firmly .
