Terms to know Programming specialist A programmer or individual with pr ogra m m i ng ex perie nce. Th e specia li st will provide the operator format and label data records which will be sent to the printer. Host system Any mainframe, minicomputer, data terminal, or personal computer.

1. Ove rvi ew If you requested custom formats for your printer at the time your printer was ordered, your printer already has formats stored in memory.

2. G ett ing Sta rted It is important for you to read this chapter before you use the pr inte r. In this ch apt er you will learn about : • charging the handles. • loading supplies. • the display. • using the keypad. • using the function keys.
About the Handle The printer is powered by a NiCad battery pack in the handle (pow er modu le). A NiCad bat ter y las ts appr ox i m ate l y two years with average daily use. When you first receive the printer, you will need to fully charge the handle.
Low Battery Anytime you store the printer, keep a handle attached to main tain t he memory . How ever, you m ay need to r ec harg e the handle before the printer can be operated.
Charging the Handles This procedure tells you how to charge the handle using the wall charger. When using the wall charger or storing it: • Do not wrap the cord around the transformer. • Do not pull or put unusual stress on the cord. To recharge the handle while it is on the printer, push the pow er sw itch of f.
Loading and Removing a Handle 1. Push the power switch off (Figure 2). 2. Hold the latch down while you slide the handle to the rear and off the printer.
Loading and Removing Supplies The following steps are for the initial loading and removing of supplies (labels). Loading Supplies Check your management to see what supply size you need for your pri nte r. If y ou run out of su ppl i es w h i l e pri nt i ng, leav e the power on and skip Step 7.

Hold t he print er upr ight . In o ne quic k re l ease acti on , slid e both latch buttons, one on each side of the printer, to the rear (Figure 4).

13. Throw away the separated supplies and any supplies sticking to the backing paper. 14. Feed the backing paper into the slot between the roller and the loading chute.
Removing Supplies 1. Open the dust cover until it locks (Figure 6). 2. Tear evenly across the supply strip and remove the roll of supplies. 3. Push the power switch on. If you don’t see FORMAT? prompt, pr es s un til you see the prompt. 4. Press . The dis play show s: RELOADING 5.
The Display Your printer has a 16-character one line display that shows prompts, a cursor, and data. The Cursor The shape of the cursor tells which mode you are in. • A solid underline shows when you are in regular mode . _ • A blinking rectangle (cursor) shows when you are in shift mode .
Using the Keypad The keypad consis ts of num b ers and fun ct i on k eys. For onli n e operations you will use the keys listed later in Table 1. Figure 7.
Using the Function Keys Function keys are used to access special features such as loa ding s uppl i e s. For ex am pl e , • At the FORMAT? pr ompt , pres s . You will see the message RELOADING and a blinking cursor indicating you are in shift mode. • Aft er you lo ad su pplies , pr es s , the n t o re tur n to the FORMAT? prompt.

3. Pri nting a Label Before you can print a label, you must have formats in memory. To receive format and label data records, you must: • attach a fully charged handle. • set the comm uni c at i ons parame ter s using F orma t 81. See "Special Operating Features" for instructions about Format 81.
Receiving Records To exit online anytime without destroying data, pr es s unti l FORMAT? a ppea rs at t he displ ay. 1. Turn the printer on. 2. You’ll see a message indicating the printer is ready to receive records. WAITING If you don’t see the WAITING prompt: 1 • Turn the printer off then on again to see the WAITING prompt.
Receiving Label Data Records You ca n r ece ive o nl y on e la bel dat a r ec ord at a tim e . T he printer will no t store label data records. You must have formats in your printer before printing a label. 1. At the WAITING prompt, send label data from the host system.
Error Messages The printer detects record or communication errors and displ a ys a me ss ag e. Re fer to Ch apt er 6, "Mes s age s and Troubleshooting," for a listing of messages. Wr ite down ea ch m ess age as yo u see it . The n hold down the to c lear t he mes sa ge.
Sequential Counting Sequential counting increases or decreases the count on a spec i f ic pos i t ion or grou p of numbe rs wit hin a fiel d. This feature may or may not be used in your formats. When the end count is reached during printing, you will see *COUNT EXPIRED*.
Sequential Count Multiples Sequential count multiples works with sequential count fields and prints multiple labels before incrementing or decrementing the count. Before you begin receiving records, which uses this feature, For mat 86 m us t be ena bl ed.
After the number in position 5 reaches 3, the printer stops printing and beeps, then displays *COUNT EXPIRED* Press a nd you’ll see PRINT ED: 6 Press and you ’ll see WAITING If a 0 (zero) is entered for MULTIPLES? in Format 86, you’ll see MULTIPLES? 0* You m ust ent er a m u ltiple l abel cou nt and pr es s before you can print.
Helpful Reminders • Always start with a fully charged handle. • Attach the safety strap of the printer to your wrist during operations. • Don’t pound the printer when applying labels to items. • For optimal print quality, Monarch recommends switching to a fully charged handle before loading a new roll of supply.

Setting the Communication Parameters Format 81 allows you to review the current settings for each onl ine opt i on. Then you ca n acc ep t the curr ent value s or change th em. Check wit h your programming specialist for the values required by your host system.
Date and Time Feature The date and time feature allows you to set the internal clock and cale ndar in your prin ter . You ca n al so change how the date or time displays and prints. The first thing you must do is set the internal clock with the curr ent da te and ti me.

Disabling/Enabling Date and Time Display This session is for models with offline printing capability. This feature lets you enable or disable date and time prompt display at power up. Disabling the date and time display will not affect the int ern al cl ock /cal endar s et ting .
Changing Date and Time Styles When you first receive your printer, the default settings for di s p l ay ing ar e : • MM/DD/YY for date. • HH:MM for time. • 24 hour clock (military time) is disabled. • AM/PM is enabled. • Display date and time at power up is enabled.

Displaying the Revision Level Thi s fea tur e le ts you s ee th e r evi sio n le ve l of you r sof twa re. The first screen shows the kernel revision level; the second sc reen show s the da te and ti me t he s oft ware was upda ted . I f you call Monarch Service with a problem, give them the information from both screens.
Sequential Count Multiples This feature is used for formats that include sequential count fields, and generates multiple labels before incr eas ing/ decrea sin g t he c ount . F o r e xampl e, if y ou ena bl e Format 86 to print multiples of 5, five labels will print before the sequential count increases or decreases.
Online Interface This feature lets you set your printer in receiving mode if you decid e t o downlo ad more fo rmat s and lab el data re co rds. Th e printer is ready to receive records when you see the WAITING prompt. Reminder... Connect the printer to the host system with a cab le i nter fac e.
Currency Selection This function lets you select a currency format for price fields or information fields. Prompt What You Do FORMAT? Enter 91 and press .
Creating a Check Digit Routine The pr inte r l ets y ou de sig n y ou r o wn c he ck digit ro utin e. Y ou must define the check digit routine before entering a format that requires a customer check digit. Prompt What You Do FORMAT? Enter 93 and press .

5. Check the supply and backing paper tracks (Figure 9). The motor may be hot. • If the ba cking pa per is w added, t ear the bac ki ng pape r. Carefully pull the wadded paper out through the front of th e pr i nt er. Remove any label s stuc k in the tr ac k.
Checking the Label Chute for Stuck Labels H old the pr inte r i n an up right p os ition . S lide the lat c h b uttons (Figure 10) on each side of the printer to the rear with one quick release action. The p laten carrier will par t ia ll y o pen. 1. Slide the buttons to the rear again, the platen carrier will open completely .
Cleaning the Print Head and Platen Roller Clean the print head : After 7-10 rolls of standard supplies. ✓ In high temperature or humid conditions. ✓ When you see voids in the print (Figure 11). In excessively dirty environments or with heavy usage, clean the print head and supply holder more often.
4. Lightly moisten a soft cloth with alcohol. 5. Clean the print head area (Figure 12) of all adhesive and label particles. 6. Also clean the platen roller and other surfaces that are shown . Spec i al i ns tru ct i ons are inc l ude d in the 6076 Cleaning Kit.

Troubleshooting If you cannot fix a problem, please contact Monarch Service. Problem Corrective Action No print on the supply. Make sure both sides of the platen carrier are closed. Make sure the supplies are loaded correctly. There may be an err or in the format.
Problem Corrective Action Printer fails to respond to the keyboard, during data entry. RECHARGE does not appear in the display. Turn the power off and switch to a fully charged handle. Handle does not hold a charge, or the handle doesn’t fully charge when recharged.
