1. Ins talli ng the Pr inter 1. Place the pr inter on a le v el sur f ace . 2. T o install the k e yboard on top of t he print er : a. Remov e the cord from the base of t he ke yboard. b. Plug the cord from the k e yboard into the soc k et. c. Insert all o f the cor d e xcept a f e w coi l s bac k into the base.
3. T ur n the power s witch off and inser t the power cord into the soc k et. Plug the other end of the cord into a grounded 115 V A C electrical outlet. NOTE: If you are going t o use the printer online, also connect the RS-232 cable. 4. On the initial star tu p , leav e the printer on f or 24 hours to charge the ne w bac kup batter ies.
2. Load ing Sup pl y The pr inter pr ints both tags and labels. The supply ma y be wound with the printable s ide on either the inside or the outside. This chapter e xplains ho w to load supply f or • Non-Peel Mode Printing (labels are printed in one strip.
2. T ur n the pr inthead lev er to the left to release the pr inthead. 3. Hold down the lo wer supply guide and r ewind the old supply roll, if there is one . 4. Release the lower supply guide . Printhead Lever Lock Lower S upply Guide CAUTION If you run out of supply while printing, pull the supply strip back through the printer.
5. Push the loc k to the right to unloc k the outer supply holder and remov e the outer supply holder from the s upply shaft. Remov e the old supply core, if there is one.
6. Place the new supply roll on the supply shaft as shown. NOTE: If your supply has a 3-inch (76.2 mm ) core: a. Remov e the hub from the inner supply holder . b. Re v erse the outer supply holder (so the smooth side f ac es the supply). 7. Fit the supply core ont o the inner supply holder and hold it in place.
8. T ur n the out er supply holder so the lock f aces out. Align the supply holder tabs wit h the track s on the shaft. 9. Push the supply holder onto the supply shaft, against the supply . Make sure the suppl y is free to unwind . 10. Push the lock to the left t o secure the oute r supply holder .
11. Pull enough supply from t he roll to r each the pr inthead. 12. Hold down the lo wer supply guide . 13. F eed the supply past the out-of-stoc k s witch, between the upper and lower supply guides , and up past the pr inthead. 14. Align the supply with the top edge of the upper guide and slide it against the bac k w all (aw ay from y ou).
15. T o adjust for wide or narrow supply , tur n t he supply width adjustment knob to: • NARROW for supply two inches in width or smaller . • WIDE fo r supply greater than two inches i n width. NOTE: Be sure the adjustment knob snaps back into place after you turn it.
17. T ur n the printer on. If y ou are: • replacing the supply with a new roll of t he same size, press f to align the printer. • changing supply size, adjust the supply sensor. See "Adjusting the Supply Sensor" later in this chapter. NOTE: Before you print, be sur e the menu supply type setting matches your supply type (e.
3. If you are reloading supply: a. Cut the backing paper in front of t he paper take-up spool, and then manually rewind the supply roll. b. While holding the bac king paper with one hand, turn the take-up spool knob countercloc kwise about 1/4 tur n with the other hand.

14. T ur n the supply roll counterc lockwise to rem o v e an y slac k in the bac king paper . Y our s upply and bac king paper should be f ed as show n.
15. T o adjust for wide or narrow supply , tur n t he supply width Adjustment Knob to: • NARROW for supply two inches in width or smaller • WIDE for supply greater than two inches i n width. NOTE: Be sure the adjustment knob snaps back into place after you turn it.

Loading Fan-Fold Supply The 9445 has the ability to pr int fan-f old supply with the optional fan-f old pr inter cov er . If your pr inter does not hav e a f an- f old slot, contact Monarch Ser vice to or der a fan-f old print er cov er . T o load f an-fold supply: 1.
6. With one hand, hold down the lower supply guide. With the other hand, f eed the bac king paper between the upper and low er guides, past the pr inthead, and then out through the e xit chute . 7. Close the pr inthead by tur ning the pr inthead lev er t o the right.
Adjusting the Supply Sensor The supply sens or controls how m uch supply f eeds between tags or labels. The sensor reads b l ac k mar ks or f eed aper tures. T o read blac k marks or aper tur es, the sensor mus t be aligned with the blac k mark or aper ture on t he tag.
Die cut supply r equires no sensor adjustment. 1. Do one of t he f ollo wing: F or blac k mark supply , tur n t he sensor adjustment knob counterc lockwise until it stops. Do not f orce the knob . F or f eed aper tur es, tur n the sensor adjustment knob counterc lockwise until it stops.
Adjusting the On Demand Sensor The On Demand s ensor stops the printer between tags or labels when you print in the On Demand mode. The sensor detects the presence of supply in the e xit chute of the printer . When y ou remo v e the tag or label, another tag or label pr ints.
3. Load ing a Rib bo n There are two types of supplies: Thermal Direct specially treated thermal supplies that don’t use a ribbon for printing. Thermal T ransfer standard supplies that r equire a ribbon for p rinti ng. NOTE: DO NO T load a ribbon when pr inting on ther mal direct supplies.
Loading a Ribbon Roll T o load a r ibbon roll: 1. Open the front panel. 2. T ur n the pr inthead lev er to the left t o release the printhead. (Also see the supply loading figure inside the front panel.
4. Pull the r ibbon spool holders off. Remov e the old r ibbon (if there is one). 5. Be sure the ther mal supply indicator is pointing upw ar d. NOTE: Turn the t hermal supply indicator to the r ight only if you are going to use thermal dir ect supplies (no ribbon).
7. Guide the new ribbon around the rollers on the ribbon roll adapter . Slide the upper spool onto the upper spool shaft. 8. Slide the r ibbon spool holders against the spools. 9. T ur n the upper ribbon spool cl o ck w i s e to add slight tension to the ribbon.
11. T ur n the upper ribbon spool clo ck w i s e until the black par t of the r ibbon is past the feed mark. 12. If the printer has supplies loaded f or continuous printing, slide the supply up to t he f eed m ark. Make sure the ribbon is correctly positioned .
Loading a Ribbon Cassette T o load a r ibbon cassette: 1. Open the front panel. 2. T ur n the pr inthead lev er to the left t o open the printhead. (Also see the supply loading figure inside the front panel.
4. Remov e the new ribbon cassette from the package . Then loosen ribbon fr om cassette as sho wn belo w . Loading a Rib bon Roll 3. Load in g a Ribbon 3-7.
5. Guide the edge of the ribbon around the ribbon guide post. 6. Place the cassette on the r ibbon spools and push it against the back w all. The spool lock will drop out. 7. T ur n the upper ribbon spool cl o ck w i s e until the r ibbon is tight. Make sure the ribbon is not wrinkled or b unched .
4. Adjusting the Display The intensity adjustment wheel is on the r ight side of t he ke yboard. Rotate the wheel t o lighten or dar ken the displa y .

5. Cl eaning the Prin thead a nd Platen Roller 1. Open the front panel. 2. T ur n the pr inthead lev er t o the left to open the pr inthead. 3. Wind the supplies back onto the supply roll. 4. Remov e the r ibbon cassette if one is loaded. WARNING Turn the power of f and unplug the power cord bef ore cleaning.
5. Lightly moisten a cotton sw ab with alcohol and r ub it back and f or th across the pr int h ead. Clean the platen roller the same wa y . 6. Reload the supply and ribbon cassette, if necessary , and close the printhead. 7. T ur n the power on. 8. Press f twice to r ealign the supply .

Append ix B. Trou bles hooting If y ou cannot fix a prob lem, call Monarch service. "Head Test Failure" Message The 9445 performs a pr inthead test when you tur n on the print er . If t he print head test fails f or any reason (bad connection, bad dot), the printer displa ys "Head test f a ilur e.
Start-Up and Printing Pr oblem Action Error message appears during star t-up . T ur n power off, then on and try again. If an error message appears again, call Monarch Ser v ice. "Check ribbon" message appears. Load a new ribbon roll or cassette.
Start-Up and Printing (continued) Pr oblem Action Printed data becomes misaligned. Recalibrate the printer . Selec t Printer Options from the main menu, then select Define Supply T ype. Select A)lign to recalibrate the printer . Printed data wraps around.
Cutting Pr oblem Explanation Cut length is more than 0.03 inches from tag length. Call Monarch Ser vic e. "Knife jam" message appears. P aper is jammed in knif e. Clear paper and clean aw ay an y gum residue. Knife out of position. Press S , then press c twice to adjus t the knif e.
