Chapter 1. Getting Started This printer i s a portable, online-onl y unit used to print la bels. The host m ust downl oad data to the prin ter before the p rinter can prin t. When you first re ceive th e printer: ✦ Charge and loa d the battery or l oad the AC power pack.

Charge the b attery: ✦ before using i t for the first tim e ✦ before l engthy printi ng ses sion s ✦ as soon as th e L ED indi cates a "low bat tery" condit ion (slow flash ing green for a l o w battery , fast alte rnating green/am ber flas hing for a "too low to operate" b attery , or no LED for a dead battery).
T o charge the batte ry: 1. T urn the prin ter off. (|) i ndicates o n and (O) indica tes off. 2. The battery can be charge d on or off th e printer . Plug the connector on the ch arger cord into the socket on the battery as shown . 3. Plug the charger in to a groun ded ele ctrical o utlet of the correct voltag e.

Chapter 2. Loading Supplies The prin ter can print on labels. W e recom mend you use synthetic sup plies to p rint serial or high-dens ity bar codes. Op e n in g t h e P rin t e r ––––––.

4. Slide the l atches on the b ack of the pri nter toward the center . 5. Continue to push the p rinthead asse mbly towa rd the rear of the prin ter until i t opens complete ly . Latche s Printhead Assembly Cha pt er 2 . L o a di ng Suppl i es 2- 3 T C9490OH Rev .
6. T o close the pri n ter , push the printhead a ssembly toward the printer , close the supply gu ide and latch th e facepla te into place. L oa d in g Rib b on ––––––––––––.
R e loa d in g a Rib b on C a sse t t e ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– T o reload you r ribbon cassette , remove the ribbon cassette from the pri n ter and fo llow the se steps: 1. Locate the en d of the casse tte with the two latche s.
4. Remove the u sed rib bon and take -up reel a nd discard . Open a p ackage of n ew ribbo n. n Do Not wri nkle or crush the ribbon. 5. With the ri dged en d of the take-up reel facin g down, pla ce the ribbon ro ll on the spool with the fo am wa sher (on the half of the casse tte with the latches).
L oa d in g S u p p lie s –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– We recommend synth etic supplie s when pri nting serial or high-de nsity bar cod es. Use onl y paper labels for pe el mode .

3. Insert the rol l of labels b etween the su pply hol ders and press until the supply holders lock i n to the la bel roll . The label ro ll s hould u nwind a s sho wn. n Make sure the l a bels turn freely in th e supply w ell. Supply Holder Cha pt er 2 .
4. F eed the labels over the pe el bar and through the lowe r openin g in the s upp ly gui de. 5. Close the printer an d turn the p rinter on. 6. W ait unti l the LED flashes on e time (ab out five seco nds) and then pre ss the trigge r . The pri nter adv ances the fi rst label to the correct pos ition for pr inting.

4. F eed the supp lies th rough the upper openin g in the supply guide. 5. Close the printer an d turn the p rinter on. 6. W ait unti l the LED flashes on e time (ab out five seco nds) and then press the trigge r . The pri nter ad vances the supply to th e correct posi tion for pri nting.

Chapter 3. Printing The host sends online pa ckets containin g print jo bs to the printer . Thi s chapter describ es how to co mmunicate w ith the host and prin t the jobs the h ost sends.
2. Insert the con nector into the printer po rt until the connector locks in to place. Y ou may hear a click as the cable’ s latch snap s into pla ce. 3. Gently pu ll on the cable ho lder to mak e sure it is se cure. 4. Plug the other end of th e cabl e into the port on you r host.
C o mmuni c a t i o n V a l ues In order for your p rinter to com municate with your h ost, you must make su re the comm unication va lues are set to th e same values.
P rin t in g in C on t in u ou s M od e –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– In Continuo us mod e, the printer p rints a strip o f labels. The LED shou ld be sol id ambe r . If the LED is so lid green, th e printer is i n On-dem and m ode.
Chapter 4. Care and Maintenance c Do Not use sharp obj ects to clean the printer . T his may damage the pri nter and vo id your warran ty . This chapter te lls you ho w to: ✦ clea r labe l jam s ✦ clean th e printhe ad, peel blade, p inch roll ers, peel bar , and pla ten rol ler ✦ clean the b attery contacts.

3. Moisten a cotton swab with alcoho l. Rub it back and forth across the pri nthead, pla ten rolle r , pinch roll ers, peel bar , and peel b lade to re move b uild-up . Make sure th e printhead, p laten rol ler , pinch rollers, pee l bar , and peel blade a re clean.

Chapter 5. Troubleshooting The prin ter uses a combina tion of LED lights to displ ay a variety of pri nter states. See th e "Problems a nd Solutio ns" section for those requirin g further acti ons. When an erro r occurs that you cannot clear , print a test label before cal ling Se rvice or send ing the pr inter in for rep air .

Prob lem So lut ion Printer does not feed. Check battery . Reload supplies. V erify that the ribbon is not out and that a label is not jammed in the label path. Slow or sluggish feeding. Make sure supplies are loaded correc tly . Check for adhesive build-up in the feed path and on the peel blade.
Chapter 6. Using the Boot The Monarch ® Renegade® 4 printer’ s boot protects it i f you accidenta lly drop i t, hit it against someth ing, or jar it i n some other manne r .
4 . With S hould er Strap Onl y . Fo r both side s of the prin ter , put together th e knob assemb ly and screw it into the threaded in sert. Do n ot over -tighten the assembly . 5 . Industrial V ersion Only . Put together screw assemb lies using the lo nger screws.

Chapter 7. Using the Cable Cover Y ou use the cab le cover wi th the industri al version of the Monarch® R enegad e® 4 printe r . The cove r holds the cable in place.
3. Fit the cab le into th e groove o n the insi de of the ca ble cover . 4. Insert the cable connector i nto printer’s se rial port and place the cover agai nst the side of the prin ter . 5. Insert the screws. n Use the long screws wi th the boot or the sh orter screws withou t the bo ot.
