- 5 - Before Use Before Use Care of the camera ∫ Handling of th e camera (to prevent water leakag e and malfuncti on) • Foreign objec ts may adhere to the inner sid e of the side do or (around the rubber seal or c onnecting terminals) when the si de door is opened or closed in places with sand or dust, etc.
Before Use - 6 - ∫ When i nner side of the lens i s fogged ( condensation) It is not a malfu nction or failure of the camera. It may be caused by the environment in which the camera is used.
- 7 - Before Use Y our Panasonic Lum ix digital still camera is GPS-equipped which can automatically record the precise location c oordinates of where the ph oto was taken. The spe cific physical address of this location can easily b e derived from this information.
Before Use - 8 - (Importa nt) About the W ate rproof/Dustproof and Anti-shock Performanc e of the Camera This does not guarantee no dest r uc t ion, no malfuncti on, or waterpro of ing in all condi t ions.
- 9 - Before Use ∫ Handling of th e camera • Wat erproofing is not gu aranteed if the unit is subject to an imp ac t as a result of being hi t or dropped , et c. If an impact to the came ra occurs, it should be i nspected (subjec t t o a fee) by a Panasonic’ s Service Center to verify th at the waterproofin g is still ef fective.
Before Use - 10 - 1 Check that there are no forei gn object s on the inne r side of t he side door . • If there i s an y foreign obje ct, such as lint, hair , sand, etc., on th e s urroundin g area, water will leak within a few sec onds caus ing malfunc tion.
- 11 - Before Use • Use the c amera underwater to 12 m (40 feet) with the water temperat ure betwe en 0 o C and 40 o C (32 o F and 104 °F). • Do not use for scuba div ing (Aqualung). • Do not use the came ra at a dept h of over 12 m (40 feet). • Do not use it in ho t wat er over 40 o C (104 °F) (in the bat h or hot spring).
Before Use - 12 - 2 Drain water by holding the camera up side down and sh aking it lightly a few tim es. • Aft er using the came ra at the seaside or und er water , or after washin g it, wate r wi ll remain at the speake r s ite of the camera for a while an d it may cause lo wer sound or s ound dis tortion.

Preparation - 16 - Preparation Att ach ing the Strap Run the strap throug h the strap eyele t on the came ra. • If the stra p c ord is loos e, it may sn ag when the side door is opene d or closed. Since damage or leaks may re su lt , b e s u re to at ta ch th e cor d fi rm ly, ch ec k ing th a t i t is not snagge d in the side door .
- 17 - Preparation Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d charger an d battery . • The battery is not c harged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery be fore use. • Charge th e bat tery with the charger ind oors.
Preparation - 18 - ∫ About the [CHARGE] indicator • When the [CHARGE] indica tor flashes – The batt ery t empe rature is too hi gh or too lo w . It is re co mmended to char ge the ba tter y again in an ambient te mperature between 10 o C and 30 o C (50 °F and 86 °F).
- 19 - Preparation ∫ Recording still pictures Recording conditions by C IP A stan dard • CIP A i s an abbrevia tion of [ Camera & Imaging Produ c ts Associ ation]. • T emperature: 23 o C (73.4 °F)/Humidity: 50%RH when LCD monitor is on. • Using a Panasoni c SD Memory Card (32 MB).
Preparation - 20 - ∫ Recor ding motion pictu res • These times are for an ambi ent temperature of 23 o C (73.4 °F) and a humid ity of 50%RH. Please be awar e that thes e t imes are approximate. • T ime of recording without us ing the GPS function.
- 21 - Preparation Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l)/the Battery • Check that t his unit is turned off. • Confirm that there is no foreign object. (P10) • We rec ommend using a Panasonic ca rd. 1 :Slide the [LOCK] switch A , and rel eas e the lock.
Preparation - 22 - Note • Remove the b attery a fter us e. (The bat tery will be ex hauste d if lef t for a lon g period of time af ter being charg ed.) • T urn the came ra off and wait for the “LUMI X” di splay on the LCD monitor to cle ar before removing the car d o r b atter y .
- 23 - Preparation About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recorded pic tures to a card. ( P154) • Memory size: Approx. 20 MB • The access time f or the built-in memory may be l onge r than the access t i me fo r a card.
Preparation - 24 - The following cards which conform to t he SD video s tandard can be used with this unit. (These cards are indicated as card in the te x t.) ¢ SD S peed Class is the speed st andard regarding cont inuous writing. Check via the label on the card, et c .

(P61) • The number of r ec o rdable pictures and the av ailab le recording time are an appr oximation.

- 27 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the c amera is shipped. Press cam e ra [ON/OFF] button. • If the lan guag e select screen is no t dis played, proceed t o [Re quirements fo r Unde rwater use] below . Press [MENU/SET] .
Preparation - 28 - Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displayed. Press [MENU/SET ] . Select [Y es] to automatically correct the clock , and then press [MENU/SET]. • Message scr ee n is displayed. Press [ME NU/SET]. Press 2 / 1 to sele ct the home area , and then pres s [M E NU/ SET].
- 29 - Preparation Tip s for t aking good pictures Hold the camera gently with both hands, kee p your arms still at your side and st and with your fee t slightly ap art. • T o prevent dropping, be sure to a ttach the supplied strap a nd fit it to y our wrist.
Basic - 30 - Basic Selecting the Recordin g Mode Press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the Reco r ding Mode. Press [MENU/SET] ..
- 31 - Basic ∫ List of Recording M odes Note • When the mode has been s witched f rom Playback Mode to Recor ding Mode, t he previously set Recording Mod e will be set.
Basic - 32 - Recording Mode: T aking Pictures with Y our Favo rite Settings (Program AE Mo de) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu.
- 33 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area a t the subject, and then press the shutter b utton halfway . • The AF area may be d isplayed larger for c e rtain zoo m magnifications and in dark places. ∫ About f ocus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom.
Basic - 34 - ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the center of t he composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the subject, and press the shutter button halfway to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button halfway while moving the camera as you compose the picture.
- 35 - Basic Recording Mode: T aking Pictures Using the Automatic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the sub ject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode f or beginners or those who want t o leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
Basic - 36 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 s econds , after whi c h its color c hanges to the usual red. Basic - 40 - Playing Back Picture s ([Normal P lay]) Note • This camera complies with the DCF standar d “D esign rule for Camera File syst em” esta blished by JEIT A “Japan Elec t ronics and Informa tion T echnology Indus t ries Associ ation” and with Exif “Exchangea ble Image File Format”.

Basic - 42 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This unit was designed to play motion pictures using the A VCHD, M P4 and Qu ickTime Motion JP EG formats. Press 2 / 1 to sel ec t a pi cture with a moti on picture ico n (such as [ ]/[ ]), and then press 3 to p lay back.
- 43 - Basic Y ou can create a single s till picture from a rec orded motion pict ure. Press 3 to p ause motion picture playback. Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displayed. It is execut ed when [Y es] is sele c ted. Exit th e menu af ter it is execut ed.
Basic - 44 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the built-in memor y or the card that are being pla yed back will be deleted. • Picture s t hat are not in th e DCF standard or th ose that are protec ted cannot be delet ed .
- 45 - Basic Note • The picture group t aken in [Time Lap se Shot] (pictu res with t he [ ] icon) will be treat ed as a single pic tu re. Deleti ng t he picture group will delete all pic tures in the group. ( P107) • Do not turn th e c amera of f while deleting.
Basic - 46 - Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back just as you like an d menus that enable you to have more fun wit h the camera and use it more easil y .
- 47 - Basic ∫ Close the menu Press [ ] several times o r press the sh utter butt on ha lfw ay . Note • There are f unction s that cann ot be set or used depen ding on t he modes or menu setting s being used on the came ra due to the specificatio ns.
Basic - 48 - By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings can be easily found. • The feature s that can be adjusted usi ng Quick Menu are determi ned by the mode or a disp lay style the camera is in . Using the Q uick Menu Press [Q.M ENU] when recor ding.
- 49 - Basic About the Setup Menu [Clock Set], [Econom y] and [Auto Review] are im portant items. Check t heir settings before using them. For details on how to select the [ Setup] menu settings, refer to P46 . • Refer to P9 for details. • Refer to P27 for details.
Basic - 50 - • Press 3 if you are using Summer T ime [ ]. (The time will move fo rward by 1 hour .) Pres s 3 once more to retu rn to the normal time. • If you canno t find the trav el des tination in the areas dis pl ayed on the screen , set by the time diff erence from t he home area.
- 51 - Basic • The numb er of days t hat have p assed since the de parture d ate can be printed o ut using th e “PHOTOf unSTUDIO” bundl ed software o n the CD-ROM ( s upplied). • The tra ve l date is calculat ed using the da te in the cloc k se tting and th e departure dat e you set.
Basic - 52 - • When you co nnec t the came ra to a TV , the volume of the TV speakers does not chan ge. Also, when connect ed, no sound is output f rom the camera speakers . • Some subjec t s may appear diff erently from actu ality on the LCD monitor .
- 53 - Basic • The bright ness of the pictures displ ayed on the LCD monitor is increa sed so some subjects may appear dif ferent from rea l life on the LCD monito r.
Basic - 54 - • When the recorded picture and the hi stogram do not match each other under the following condition s, the histogram is displayed in orange.
- 55 - Basic • Maximum illuminating range of t he LED lig ht is 50 cm (1.6 feet). • The life of batter y will de c rease when the LED light is turn ed on const antly . • In l ocations where t he use of light is prohi bited, set to [ ]. • It is fixed to [ ] in the following cases.
Basic - 56 - • [Auto Po wer Off] is set to [5 MIN. ] in the In tel lig e nt Au to Mode . • [Auto Powe r Of f] does not work in the foll owing cases.
- 57 - Basic • [Auto Review] is ac tivate d regardless of its sett ing in the f ollowing cases. – When us ing Auto B racket – When using [Burst] • In Intell igent Auto Mode or [Pano rama Shot] in Scene Mode, the Auto Review func tion is fixed to [ 2SEC .
Basic - 58 - x [USB Mode] Select the USB comm unication system after or before connecting the camera to your PC or your printer with the USB connection cable (supplied). [ y ] ([Select on connection]) : Select either [ PC] or [PictBridge(PTP)] if you connected th e camera to a PC or a printer supporting PictBridge.
- 59 - Basic • This will work when th e HD MI micro cable (o ptional) is connected. • Refer to P157 for details. • This will work when the HDMI micro cable (optional) is connected. • Refer to P159 for t he met hod to play back 3D pictures in 3D.
Basic - 60 - • Use a battery with suffi cient bat tery power or the AC ad aptor (opti onal) when f ormatting. Do not turn the c amera off during formatti ng. • If a card has been ins erted, only the card is format ted. T o format the built-in memory , remove the ca rd.

- 63 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Zoom Y ou can zoom in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. Setting the number of pixels to 8 M or less will operate the Extended Optical Zoom to t ake zoomed pictures wit hout affecting quality .
Recording - 64 - ∫ Screen display • When using the Z oom function, an estimate of the focu s range will appea r in conjunction with th e zoom display bar . [Example: 0.3 m (0.98 ft. ) – ¶ ] Note • The indic ate d zoom magnificatio n i s an approxi mation.

Recording - 66 - ∫ A vailabl e flash settings b y Recording Mo de The available flash settings depend on the Recording Mode. ( ± : Available, —: Not available, ¥ : S cene Mode initial s etting) ¢ [ ] is displayed. • The flash se tting may change if the Recor ding Mode is changed.
- 67 - Recording Note • If you brin g th e fla s h too clos e t o an object, the objec t may be di s t orte d or discolored by the heat or light ing from the flash. • Recording a subject fr om too close, or without suf ficient flash will not provi de th e appropriate level of expos ur e, and may result in a pic tur e that is too white or dark .
Recording - 68 - Applicable modes: T aking Close-up Pictur es ([AF Macro]/[Ma cro Zoom]) This mode allows you to take c lose-up pictu res of a subject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. Press 4 [ # ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/SET].
- 69 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures with th e Self-timer Press 2 [ ë ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/SET]. Note • When you pres s the shutt er button once full y , the subject is automatically focus ed just before recording.
Recording - 70 - Applicable modes: Using Exposu re Compensation Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the su bject and the backgr ound. Note • EV is an abbrevia tion of [Exposu re V alue], a unit indic ating the amount of exposure.
- 71 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures Using Auto Bracket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatic ally recorded in the selected expos ure compensation range each time the s hutter button is pressed. With Auto Bracket d 1E V Note • When set ting Auto Bracket, [ ] appears o n the scre en.
Recording - 72 - Recording Mode: T aking picture by setti ng the exposure manually (Manual Exposure M ode) Determine the exposu re by manually setting the aper ture value and the shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of t he sc reen to indicate the exposure.
- 73 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking Out d oor Pictures Using Specific Recording Modes By setting the Recording Mode to [ ], [ ], [ ], or [ ], pictures can be taken more effectively , matching conditions such as sports, snow , beach & snorkeling .
Recording - 74 - This is optimal for taking pictures underwater and at the beach. Dept h meter will automatically operate. It can be a rough in dication of how deep yo u have gone underwater . Press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select [Beach & Snorke ling], and then pres s [MENU/SET].
- 75 - Recording Note • Measured dep th may not be accurate when pressur e is ap plied to front or rear of this unit by pressin g wi th your hands, etc. In such a case, it is recommend ed to perform [Depth indicator] again when you get back to t he sur face.
Recording - 76 - This is optimal for taking pictures underwate r deeper than 12 m (40 feet) by the use of the marine case (DMW-MCFT3: optional). ¢ This camera has a waterp roof/dustproof f unction equivalent to “IP68” . It is poss i ble t o take picture s in 12 m (40 feet) depth for 60 mi nut es.
- 77 - Recording Recording Mode: Record pictures that lo ok like dioramas (Miniature Effect Mode) By creating areas that are blurred and areas that are not, the picture will look like that of a miniature model. Motion pict ures can also be recorded with dioram a effect s that appear to be played back in fast forward.
Recording - 78 - Recording Mode: T aking Pictures that M atch the Scene Being Recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode to match the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtai n the desired picture.
- 79 - Recording When taking pictures of people outdoors during t he day , this mode allows you t o improve the appearance of the persons and mak e their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Port rait Mode T o make this mode more effective: 1 Press and hold down the zoo m button as far a s possible to T ele.
Recording - 80 - Pictures are recorded continuous ly while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to make a single panorama picture. 1 Press 3 / 4 to select the recording direction and th en press [MENU/SET]. 2 Af ter confirming the recording direction, press [MENU/SET ].
- 81 - Recording Note • The zoom posit ion is fixe d to Wide. • The focus , whi te ba lanc e, an d ex posur e ar e fix ed at the op timu m va lues for th e fir st pic ture . As a result, if t he focus or brightnes s change s subs tantially du ring recording, the ent ire panorama picture may not be recorded at the suit able focus or brightn ess.
Recording - 82 - This allows you to take pictures of a person and the back ground with near real-life brightness. ∫ T echnique fo r Night Port rait M ode • Use the flash. (Y ou can set to [ ‹ ].) • Ask the sub j ect not to move while ta king a picture.
- 83 - Recording This mode allows y ou to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc. This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you us e the flash, the light from it is weaker t han usual.
Recording - 84 - Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [Age] or [Name], refer to [ B aby1] /[Baby 2] on P83 . Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of sunset view .
- 85 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking 3D pictures (3D Photo M ode) Pictures are recorded continuously while m ovi ng the camera horizontally , two pictures selected automatically are combined to make a single 3D picture. T o view 3D pict ures, a television that supports 3D is required.
Recording - 86 - Applicable modes: Recording T aking a Picture with Face Recognition Function Face Recognition is a function which finds a face rese mbling a registered face and prioritizes focus and exposure automatically .
- 87 - Recording Y ou can register information such as names and birthdays for face images of up to 6 people. Registration can be facilitated by taking multiple face images of each p erson. (up to 3 pictures/registration) Select [Fac e Recog. ] on the [Re c] menu and then press [MENU/SET].
Recording - 88 - Select item to edit with 3 / 4 , and then press [MENU/SET]. • Y ou can register up to 3 fac e images. • Exit th e menu af ter it is set. Item Description of s ettings [Name] It is possible t o register names. 1 Press 4 to select [SET] an d then press [ME NU/SET].
- 89 - Recording Y ou can modify the pictures or information of an already registered person. Y ou can also delete the information of t he registered person. 1 Select [Face Recog.] from the [Rec] menu, and then press [MENU/SET ]. (P46) 2 Press 4 to select [MEMORY] and press [MENU/SET ].
Recording - 90 - Entering T ext It is possible to enter babies ’ and pets’ names and the locations when recording. (Only alphabetical characters and symbols can be entered.) Displa y the entry scr een. • Y ou can display the ent ry scree n v ia the following op erations.
- 91 - Recording Using the [Rec] Menu For details on [Rec] m enu settings, refer to P46 . Applicable modes: This allows you to select the aspect ratio of the pictures to suit printing or the playback method. Note • The ends of th e recorded pictures may be c ut at prin tin g so check before print ing.
Recording - 92 - Applicable modes: Set the number of pixels. The higher the nu mbers of pixels, the finer the det ail of the pictures will appear even when they are printed ont o large sheets. ¢ This item cannot be set in the Intellig ent Auto Mode. Note • If y ou change th e aspect ratio , set the picture siz e ag ain.
- 93 - Recording Applicable modes: Set the compression rate at which the pictures are to be stored. Note • The setting is fixed to [ › ] in [Hand held Night Sh ot ] or [High Sens.] in Scene Mode. • The following ic ons are displayed during the 3D rec or ding.
Recording - 94 - Applicable modes: This allows the sens itivity to light (ISO sens itivity) to be set. Setting t o a higher number enables pictures to be taken even in dark plac es without the re sulting pictures coming out dark.
- 95 - Recording Applicable modes: In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in ot her such conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, this i tem adjusts to the color of white, which is closest to what is seen by the eye i n ac cordance with the light source.
Recording - 96 - ∫ Auto White Balance Depending on the c onditions when pictures are taken, the pic tures may take on a reddish or bluish tinge. Furthermore, when a multiple number of light sour ces are being used or there is nothing with a color close to white, Auto White Balance may not fun ction properly .
