5 PREP ARA TION CONNECTING T O P O WE R You can power yo ur cassette recorder fro m: • Inte r nal bat ter ie s • A C pow er (using an A C adap ter) • Y our v ehicle’ s cigare tte-lighte r soc ket (using a DC adapter) Using Battery P o wer To po wer th e cass ette reco rd er f rom inte rn al b atte r- ies, you need two AA batterie s.
6 Follow these s teps to in stall bat teries. 1. Open the batter y compartment cov er by press- ing do wn and sli ding it in the dire ction of the arrow o n the co ver , then li fting open the co v er . Caution: The c ov er is hinged . Do not tr y to remo ve i t.
7 When the red BATT ERY indica tor lights duri ng oper- ation , r epl ace b oth ba tt eri es. Warn in g: Dispos e of old bat teries pr omptly and properly . Never burn or b ury them. Important: T his produ ct is c apable o f usi ng re- chargea ble nick el-cadm ium batte ries.
8 U s i n g AC Po w e r You can pow er the c assette rec order us ing a 3V, 20 0 mA AC ada pter and a size H Ada ptaplug ® (neither suppli ed). Both are avai lable at yo ur loca l Ra- dioS hack stor e. Cautions: Y ou must use a Class 2 power s ource that sup plies 3 V DC and deli vers at least 200 mA.
9 Follow these steps to c onnect th e cass ette recorder to AC power. 1. Set the ad apter’ s v olta ge s witch to 3V . 2. Insert the size H Ada ptaplug into the adapter’ s cord, with the tip s et to negat ive . 3. Insert the plug into the cassette recorder’ s DC3V jack.

11 CONNECTING HEADPHONE S OR SPEAKERS To listen in st ereo, you need a pair of headphon es or ampl ifie d sp eake rs wi th a 1 / 8 -inch plug. Yo ur local Radio Shack s tore carrie s a ful l line o f headph ones and spea kers. Insert the headphon es’ or speak ers’ plug in to the cas sette rec order’s jack.

13 OPERA TION PLA YING THE RADIO 1. T o hear monaura l sound th rough the b uilt-in speak er , set E-B ASS to SP ON . Note: When y ou use th e bui lt-in speak er , you cannot emphasi ze lo w frequencies with E-B ASS . T o hear stereo sound through h eadphones or ampl i fie d spe akers, set E-BASS to OFF .

16 1. T ake up an y slac k in the tape b y turning the cas- sette’ s hub with a penci l. Do not touch the e xposed tape. 2. Slide OPEN in the direction of the arro w and pull up on th e compartment door to open it.
17 3. Insert a cassette into the door’ s tape guides wi th the cas sette’ s open edge f acing up a nd the full reel to th e right. 4. Close the casset te compa r tment do or .
18 2. Slide TA P E / O S C (oscilla tor) to NORMAL f or nor- mal bi as ca sse tte t ape s or t o ME T AL/ HIGH (PB) f or ch rome or me tal cass ette tapes . 3. Slide DIRECTION to FWD to pla y the s ide f acing out, or to REV to pla y the re verse side .
19 4. Set the re ve rse mode s witch to cho ose the auto- matic reverse op tio n: One-Time Playback ( ): The cass ette recorder pla ys one side of the t ape, a utomati- cally re ve rses the t ape’ s pla yback directio n, pla ys the re ve rse side of the tape , then aut omat- ically stops .

21 USING F AST FOR W ARD AND REWIND When th e tape is stopped , press or to re- wind or fast-forward it. To stop t he tape before it re aches the end, pres s ST OP . Note: To prot ect the tap e after the ta pe has ful ly wound to eithe r end, press ST OP to rele ase fast- forward an d rewind.
22 RECORDING You can record fro m the cass ette reco rder’s rad io, or you can use the su pplied micropho ne to make live recordin gs. Use an y normal bias (Ty pe I) tape up to 90 min utes long . We do no t recommend 120-minute tapes b ecause th ey are thi n and can easily tangle.

30 CLEANING THE T AP E-HANDLING PA R T S Dirt, dus t, or particles of the tape’s coati ng can accu- mulate on the tap e heads a nd other pa rts the tap e touches .
