En-11 Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Speaker Configurati on The following table indicates the cha nnels you should use depending o n the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended fo r a really powerful and solid bass.
Connections En-12 Connecting the Speaker Cables/Powere d Subwoofers Please connect a , b , c , d , e and f for 5.1-channel surround. • Pay close attention to speaker wirin g polarity. In other words, connect positive (+) terminals only to positive (+) terminals, and negati ve (–) terminals only to negative (– ) terminals.
Connections En-13 ■ Speaker Connection Prec autions • You can connect speakers with an impedance of between 6 and 16 ohms. If you use speakers with a lower impedance, and use the amplifier at high volume levels for a long period of time, the buil t-in amp protection circuit may be activated.
Connections En-14 If you select the input select or butto n, the signal from the component connected to the assigned ja ck is played. • Before making an y AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Push plugs in all the way to make good conn ections (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
Connections En-15 • If a phono equalizer is not installed on the turntable to connect, it has to be prepared separately. Use a phono equalizer which is compatible with the cartridge of the turntable. • Only the front-panel USB input is compatible with iPod/iPhone and Onkyo wireless LAN adapter UWF-1.
Connections En-16 ■ For p -compatible TV The following linked operations are enabled by connecting the AV receiver to an p -co mpatible TV. • The AV receiver will enter standby mode when the TV is set to standby.
Connections En-17 The video and audio signal flo w Connect the AV receiver between the AV components and the TV. The signal from th e AV components is carried through th e AV receiver.
Connections En-18 ■ Coaxial digital audio Coaxial digital con nections allow you to enj oy digital sound such as PCM *1 , Dolby Digital or DTS. The audio quality is the same as optical. ■ Analog audio (RCA) Analog audio connection s (RCA) carry analog audio.
Connections En-19 With u (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u , while the AV receiver is on standby, the AV receiver will auto matically turn on and select that component as the input source.
En-20 Turning On & Basic Operations Turning On/Off the AV Receiver Note • Before connecting the power cord, con nect all of your speakers and AV components. • Turning on the AV receiver ma y cause a momentary power surge that might interfere with other electrical equipment on the same circuit.
Turning On & Basic Operations En-21 With the supplied calib rated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, opti mum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
Turning On & Basic Operations En-22 1 Turn on the AV receiver and the connected TV. On the TV, select the input to which the AV receiver is connected. 2 Set the speaker setup microphone at the Main Listening Position a , and connect it to the SETUP MIC jack.

Playback En-36 Input Source The following audio formats are su ppo rted by the listening modes. *1 The AV receiver outputs this sour ce in 5.1-channel surround sound. Speaker Layout The illustration shows which sp eakers are activated in each channel.
Playback En-37 ■ Listening Modes T-D (Theater- Dimensi onal) With this mode you can enjoy a virtual surround sound even with only two or three speakers.
Playback En-38 Note *1 (North American and Taiwanese m odels) This listening mode is not available. *2 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 is active. Besides, if you activate Zone 2 while Pure Audio is selected, the listening mode will automatically switch to Direct.
Playback En-39 You can display va rious information about the current input source as follows. The following information can be typically displayed. *1 When AM or FM radio is us ed, the band, preset number, and frequency are displayed. *2 If the input signal is digital, the signal format is displayed.

En-41 Advanced Operations On-screen Setup This section describes the procedure for usin g the remote controller unless otherwise specified. With the AV receiver conne cted to a TV, there are two ways of changing the settings on-screen: using the Quick Setup or the Setup Menu ( HOME ).
Advanced Operations En-42 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 41 ) You can change various audio settings fro m the Quick Setup ( ➔ page 41 ). Note • These settings are not available in either of the following cases: – The “ Audio TV Out ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ page 53 ).

Advanced Operations En-48 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 44 ) Here you can adjust the level of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the volume of each speaker is the same at the listening position. Note • These settings cannot be calibrated in either of the following cases: – A pair of headphones is connected.
Advanced Operations En-49 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 44 ) DTS ■ Neo:6 Music Center Image ` 0 to 2 to 5 With this setting, you can specify by how much the front left and right channel outpu t is attenuated in order to create the center channel.
Advanced Operations En-50 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 44 ) at reference level when the master volume control is set to the 64 position. At that level you can hear the mix as the mixers heard it. Audyssey Dynami c EQ ® is referenced to the standard film mix level.

Advanced Operations En-54 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 44 ) ■ InstaPrevue These settings apply to “ InstaPrevue ” of the Home menu ( ➔ page 40 ) and specify the preview display of HDMI video streams. Sub Window ` Multi : Displays preview thumbnails all at once.
Advanced Operations En-55 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 44 ) ■ Network Standby ` On ` Off This setting enables or disables control over the network. When enabled, the NET indi cator will be dimly-lit while the AV receiver is in standby mode. Note that the indicator may not l ight under certain conditions ( ➔ page 20 ).

En-57 Controlling Other Components Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’ s remote contro ller to control your other AV compon ents, including those made by other manufactu rers. This section explains how to enter the remo te control code for a componen t that you want to cont rol: DVD, TV, C D, etc.
Controlling Other Components En-58 Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the remote controller at the AV receiver, not the component.
Controlling Other Components En-59 Controlling a Blu-ray Disc/DVD Player, HD DVD Player or DVD Recorder BD/DVD is preprogrammed with the remote control code for controlling a componen t that supports the p *1 (limited to some models). The component must be able to receive remote control commands via p and be connected to the AV receiver via HDMI.
Controlling Other Components En-60 ■ DVD player/DVD reco rder operation ■ VCR/PVR operation ■ Cassette tape deck operation ■ Satellite receiver/Cable receiver oper ation ■ CD player/CD recorder/MD recorder operation Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all.
Controlling Other Components En-61 RI Dock With the RI Dock, you can easily play the music of your iPod/iPhone, or watch the slideshows and videos of your iPod/iPhone on a TV.
Controlling Other Components En-62 By pressing the REMOTE MODE button that’s been programmed with the remote control code for your Dock, you can control your iPod/iPhone in the Dock with the buttons described furth er in this section. See “Entering Remote Control Codes” for deta ils on entering a remote control code ( ➔ page 57 ).
En-63 Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this sectio n. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer. If you can’t resolve the iss ue yourself, try resetting the AV receiver before contacti ng your Onkyo dealer.

Although it’s possible to play music on a computer that’s connected to the network wirelessly, playback may be unreliable, so it is recommended to use wired connections.
