7 Multir oom Capability Y ou can use two speake r systems with this A V receiver —a surround-sound speak er system (up to 7.1 channels) in your main listening room, a stereo speaker system in a seco nd room, or Zone 2, as we call it. An d, you can select a differ ent audio source for each room.

11 Fr ont & Rear P anels —Continued a DIGIT AL IN CO AXIAL 1 and 2 These coaxial digital audio inputs are for connecting components with a coaxial digital audio output, such as a CD player or D VD/BD player . They’ re assignable, wh ich means you can assign each one to an input selector to suit your setup.
12 Front & Rear P anels —Continued e HDMI IN 1–4 and OUT HDMI (High Definit ion Multimedia Interface ) connections carry digi tal audio and digital video. The HDMI inputs are for connecting components with an HDMI output, such as a DVD/BD player, DV D / B D r e c o r d e r, o r DV R ( d igital video recorder).

16 Connecting the A V receiver Speaker Configurat ion For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need sev en speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table sho ws which channels y ou should use based on the number of speakers you hav e. *1 If you’ re using onl y one surroun d back speaker, connect it to the SURR BA CK L terminals.
17 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued Speaker Connectio n Precautions Read the following before connecting your speak ers: • North American and T aiwan models: Y ou can connect speake rs with an impedance of between 6 and 16 ohms.
18 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued ■ TX-SR5 07 The follo wing illustration sho ws which speaker should be connect ed to each pair of terminal s for 7.1-channel playback . If you’ re using only one surround back speaker , connect it to the SURR B A CK L terminals.
19 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued The FR ONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surro und back speakers respe ctiv ely , or bi-amped to provid e separate tweeter and woofer feeds fo r front speakers, prov iding improv ed bass and treble performance.
20 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop an tenna, and ho w to connect commercially av ailable ou tdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won’t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner .
21 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoor FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good re ception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially a vailable outdoor FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can someti mes be obtained when in stalled in an attic or l oft.
22 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked a ll A V connections.
23 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD pl ayer and other A V components to the A V receiv er, you can switch the audio and vide o signals simultaneously simply b y changing the input source on the A V receiver.
24 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mu ltimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, D VD players, set-top boxes, and other video com ponents.

35 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued Wi t h u (Remote Interactiv e), you can use the following special functions: ■ Auto Po wer On/Standby When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the A V re ceiv er is on Standby , it will automatica lly turn on and select that component as the input source.

38 First Time Setup —Continued Using A udyss ey 2EQ™ Notes: • Before starting Audyssey 2EQ ™ Automatic Sp eaker Setup, arrange the room a nd connect the speakers as you would for enjoying movies . Changes to the room after auto setup requires you run th e auto setup again, as room EQ characterist ics may ha ve changed.
39 First Time Setup —Continued Notes: • When the room correcti on and speaker setup is complete, the Equaliz er Settings (page 70) will be set to “Audyssey” and the “D ynamic E Q” (page 72) will be set to “On”.
40 First Time Setup —Continued If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more b ut less than 6, set the Speaker Impedance to 4 ohms. North American and T aiwan models d o not support speakers with an impedance of less than 6 ohms. T o use bi-amping, you must change the Speak er T ype setting.
41 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a video component to an HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD play er to HDMI IN1, you mu st assign HDMI IN1 to the D VD/BD input selector . Notes: • Each HDMI IN cannot be as signed to more than one input selector .
42 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a video component to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2, you must assign COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 to the D VD/BD input selector .
43 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to OPTICAL IN 1, you must assign OPTICAL IN 1 to the CD input select or .
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an u -capable Onkyo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or RI Dock to the TV/T APE IN/OUT jacks, or connect an RI Dock to the CBL/SA T IN or VCR/D VR IN jacks, for u to work properly , you must change this se tting.
45 Basic Operations Basic A V receiver Operation 1 Use the A V r eceiver’ s inpu t selector buttons to select an input source. T o select an input so urce with the remote contr oller , press its [RECEIVER] bu tton, and then use its INPUT SELECTOR b uttons.
46 Basic Oper ations —Continued This section explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. T o unmute the A V recei ver, press the remote controller’ s [MUTING] b utton again, or adjust the volume.
47 Basic Operations —Continued 7 For pri v ate listening, you can connect a pair of stereo headphones (1/4-inch phone plug) to th e A V receiv er’ s PHONES jack. Notes: • Always turn down the v olume before connecting your headphones. • W hile the headphones plug is inserted in the PHONES jack, the speakers are tur ned off.
48 Basic Oper ations —Continued The Music Optimizer func tion enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. Use it with music f iles that use “lossy” compression, such as MP3. Note: The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sa mpling rate below 48 kHz and analog audio input signals.
49 Listening to the Radio For AM/FM tuning to work properly , you must specify the AM/FM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is cha nged, all radi o presets are deleted. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V recei ver by using its [SETUP] bu tton, arrow b uttons, and [ENTER] button.
50 Listening to the Radio —Continued W ith the built-in tuner , you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations and store your f av orite stations as presets for easy selection. T uning int o AM/FM Radio Stations ■ Auto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the T UNED indicator appears.

53 Listening to the Radio —Continued RDS only works in ar eas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned to an RDS station, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radi o signals.
54 Listening to the Radio —Continued Display ing Radio T ext (RT) When tuned to an RDS station that’ s broadcasting te xt information, the tex t can be displayed. Notes: • The message “W aiting” may appear while the A V receiv er waits for the R T information .
55 UP-A1 series Doc k f or iP od W ith the UP-A1 series Dock (sold separately), you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound. Y ou can use the A V re ceiv er’ s remote controller to operate your iPod.

65 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES Matrix This mode is for use with DTS-ES Matrix soundtracks, which use a matrix-encoded back-channel for 6.1/7.1- channel playback. Use it with D V Ds that bear the DTS- ES logo, especial ly those with a DTS-ES Matrix soundtrack.

72 Adv anced Setup —Continued 3-3. DTS Neo:6 Music Center Image 0 to 5 (default: 2) The DTS Neo:6 Music listening mode creates 6-channe l surround sound from 2-channel stereo sources. W ith this setting, you can specify by how much the front left and right channel output is attenua ted in order to create the center channel .
73 Adv anced Setup —Continued This section explains items on the “Source Setup” menu. Items can be set individuall y for each input selector . IntelliV olume W ith IntelliV olume, you can se t the input lev el for each input selector indivi d ually .
74 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can assign a default list ening mode to each input source that will be selected aut omatically when you select each input source. For example, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.

77 Adv anced Setup —Continued ■ LipSync The A V recei ver can be set to automatically corre ct any delay between the video and th e audio, based on the data from the connected monitor . Notes: • This function works only if your HDMI-compatible TV supports HDMI Lip Sync.

79 Adv anced Setup —Continued CinemaFIL TER W ith the CinemaFIL TER, you can soften overly brigh t movie soundtracks, which are typically mixed for reproduction in a movie theater .
80 Zone 2 In addition to your main listen ing room, you can also enjoy playback in the other room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
81 Zone 2 —Continued If you’ ve connected your Zon e 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as e xplained in “Connecting Y our Zo ne 2 Speakers Directly to the A V recei ver” on page 80, you must set the “Po wered Zone 2” setting to “Act” (Activ ated).
82 Zone 2 —Continued This section explains ho w to turn Zone 2 on and off, ho w to select an input source for Zone 2, and how to adjust the vo lume for Zone 2. Contro lling Zone 2 fr om the A V rec eiver Notes: • T o select AM or FM, press the [TUNER] input selector button repeatedly .
83 Zone 2 —Continued Adjusting the V olume of Zones Muting Zones On the remote contr oller , press the [ZONE 2] button, and then use the V OL [ q ]/[ w ] button. A V rec eiver On the A V receiver, press the [ZONE 2] button (the ZONE 2 indicator and Zone 2 selector on the display flashes) and then use the [–]/[+] bu ttons within 8 seconds.
84 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can control your D VD player , CD player , and other components with the A V rece iver’ s remote controller . T o control another component , you must f irst enter that component’ s remote control code to a REMO TE MODE button.
85 Contr olling Other Components —Continued Remote Contr ol Codes for Onky o Components Conn ected via u Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component. This allows you to control components that are out of vie w , in a rack, for e xample.
86 Controlling Other Components —Continued By pressing the [TV] or [TV/ T APE] buttons that’ s been programmed with the remote contr ol code for your TV (TV/D VD combination or TV/VCR combination ), you can control your TV with the followin g buttons.
87 Contr olling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your D VD player (Blu-ray , HD D VD, or TV/D VD combination), you can control your player with the follo wing b uttons.

Notes: • If you enter the remote control code for a HD D VD or Blu-ray player that has A, B, C, and D or colored buttons, the [SEARCH], [REPEA T], [RANDOM], and [PLA Y MODE] buttons will work as colored or A, B, C, D buttons.
89 Contr olling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your satellite re ceiv er , cable recei ver , or D VD recorder (DBS/PVR combination or ca ble/PVR combination), you can control your player with the follo wing b uttons.
90 Controlling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote contr ol code for your CD player , CD recorder , or MD player , you can con trol your player with the follo wing buttons. The [CD] b utton is preprogrammed with the remote control code for controlling an Onkyo CD player .
91 Contr olling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your Dock, you can control your iPod in the Dock with the following b uttons. For some RI docks, th e “ON/ST ANDBY” button may not work with a remote control code 82990 (without RI).
92 Controlling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote contr ol code for your cassette recorder , you can cont rol your cassette recor der with the following b uttons.
93 T roub leshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’ t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the A V receiver • Make sure that the po wer cord is plugged into the wa ll outlet properly .
94 T r oubleshooting —Continued • Check the “2-2. Sp Config (Speaker Conf iguration)” (page 66 or 68). • On the TX-SR507, while Po wered Zone 2 is being used, nothing is output by these speake rs (page 81).
95 T r oubleshooting —Continued • The A V receive r does not con vert b etween formats, so if a video source compon ent is connected to a component video input, your TV must be connected to the component video output (page 23). • If the video source is connected to an HDMI input, your TV must be connected to the HDMI OUT (page 23).
