12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie theater or concert hall. W ith Blu-ra y Discs or DVDs, you can enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need 7 speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
14 En Connecting the Speaker Cab les Screw-type speak er terminals Using Banana Plugs (North American models) • If you are using b anana plugs, tighten the sp eaker terminal before inserting the b anana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En Bi-amping the Fr ont Speaker s The FRO NT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respec- ti vely , or bi-amped to pro vide separate tweeter and w oofer feeds for a pair of front speakers th at support bi-amping, pro viding improv ed bass and treble performance.
17 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checked all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connecti ons (loose connecti ons can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
18 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 43 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 91 ) and “Using an RIHD-comp atible TV , Player, or Record er” ( ➔ 92 ).

20 En Note *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned off . If your turntabl e (MM) doesn’t h ave a p hono preamp, connect to PHONO IN .
21 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radi o signals without any antenn a connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner .
22 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
23 En A udio Connection Formats Audio component can be connected b y using any of the follo wing audio connection form ats: analog, optical, coax- ial, analog multichannel, or HDMI. When choosing a connection form at, bear in mind that the A V receiv er does not con vert digital input signals for ana- log line outputs and vice versa.
24 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Receiver T urning On Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by ON on the r emote controller . The A V rece iv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indicator goes of f.
25 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the language used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Lang uage” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 54 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remo te controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows.
26 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute functi on is cancelled when the A V rece i ver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
27 En Note *1 If Pure Audio or Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected. *2 Only when you have selected “ Custom ” in the “ Picture Mo.
28 En Using the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components with sim- ple commands by simply pre ssing one b utton. The default actions are described belo w . Press A CTIVITIES to start the Easy macro command.
29 En W ith the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ automa tically determines the number of speakers connected, the ir si ze for purposes of bass man- agement, optimum crossover frequencies to the subw oofer (if present), and distances fro m the primary li stening posi- tion.
30 En Note • When Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 47 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 9 ). • Y ou can cancel Au dyssey MultEQ Room Co rrection and Speaker Setup at an y point in this procedure simply by discon- necting the setup microphone.
31 En Error Me ssages While Audyssey MultEQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages belo w may appear . The options are: ` Retry : T ry again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup. • Ambient noise is too high.
32 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
33 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 51 ).
34 En Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by ty pe. Listening to T raffic Ne ws (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press R T/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
35 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be turned on for recording.

THX Modes carefully optim ize the tonal and spatial character- istics of the soundtrack for repro ductio n in the home-theater environment.
41 En Onkyo-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 Based on the audio channels contained in the sour ce, the corresponding speak ers will output the sound. *2 If there are no surroun d back speakers, or Powered Zone 2 is being used, Dolby Pro Logic II is used.
42 En Advanced Oper ations Adv a nced Setup The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a con venient w ay to change the A V recei ver’ s vario us settings. Settings ar e organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings b y using the on-screen display .
43 En Explanatory Notes Main Menu Input /Output Assign Monitor Out Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI OUT and COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT and ha ve the A V receiv er upcon vert t he picture resolution as nece s- sary to match the resolution supported b y your TV .
44 En Note • If no video component is connected to HDMI OUT (even if the HDMI input is assigned), the A V receive r selects the video source based on the setting of “ Component V ideo I nput ”.
45 En Main menu Speaker Setup Here you can check the settings made by Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function, or set them manually , which is useful if you change one of the connect ed speakers after using Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function.
46 En ■ Surr Back Ch ` 1ch : Select if only one surround back speaker is con- nected. ` 2ch : Select if tw o (left and right) surround back speakers are connected. Note •I f t h e “ Surr Back ” setting is set to “ None ” ( ➔ 45 ), this setting cannot be selected.
47 En Equalizer Settings W ith the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers indi vidually with a 7-band equalizer . The volume of each speaker can be set ( ➔ 46 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : Y ou can adjust the equaliz er for each speaker ma nu- ally .
48 En ■ Preserve THX Settings ` Ye s : Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® / Audyssey Dynamic V olume ® will not be acti ve in THX listening mode. ` No : Audyssey Dynamic EQ/ Audyssey Dynamic V olume will be acti ve in THX listening mode depending on the setting.
49 En ■ PLIIz Height Gain The Height Gain Control in Dolb y Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are thre e settings, “ Low ”, “ Mi d ” and “ High ”, and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order .
50 En W ith Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® , you can enjoy great sound ev en when listening at low v olume levels. Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deterio- rating sound quality as v olume is decreased by takin g into account h uman percepti on and room acoustics.
51 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually . This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
52 En Note • T o name a radio preset, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ 33 ). • (North American models) Y ou cannot enter a custom name for SIRIUS radio presets. •“ Name Edit ” is not operable when the input selector is set to “ NET/USB ”.
53 En ■ Edge Enhancement *2 ` 0 to +10 W ith this setting you can adjust the sharpness of edges in the picture. “ 0 ” is the softest. “ +10 ” is the sharpest. ■ Noise Reduction *2 ` Off : Noise reduction of f. ` Low : Low noise reduction. ` Mid : Medium noise reduction.
54 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD W ith this setting, you can spec ify the listen ing mode to be used when a DTS or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio format digital audio signal is played (D VD, LD, CD, etc.). Specifies the default listening mode for DTS- HD Master Audio sources, such as Blu-ray or HD D VD (input via HDMI).
55 En T uner For FM/AM tuning to w ork properly , you must specify the FM/AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is change d, all radio presets will be deleted. ■ FM/AM Frequency Step (Nor th American and T aiwan models) ` 200kHz/10kHz : Select if 200 kHz/10 kHz st eps are used in your area.
56 En Note • When set to “ On ” and close the menu, the name of connect ed p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are dis- played on the A V receiver.
57 En A uto P owe r Down ■ A uto Po wer Down ` Off : Auto Power Do wn disabled. ` On : Auto Power Do wn enabled. The A V receiv er will auto matically perform ST ANDBY operation when “ A uto Power Down ” is set to “ On ” , with no audio or video signal input, and if there is no operation for 30 minutes.
58 En Y ou can change various audio settings from the Home menu ( ➔ 26 ). Note • These settings are disabled when: – a pair of headphones is connected , or –t h e “ A udio TV Out ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 55 ) and an input selector other than HDMI is selected.
59 En Re-EQ W ith the Re-EQ function, you can compensate a soundtrack whose high-frequenc y content is too harsh, making it more suitable for home theater viewing.
60 En NET/USB The A V receiv er is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home netw ork with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music f iles stored on your computer or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
61 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V recei ver to a netw ork with Internet access ( ➔ 60 ). Y ou can select Internet radio stations by co nnecting to the A V recei ver from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
62 En Registering Pre sets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio sc reen, and then pr ess ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pr eset the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
63 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , during playback (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current folder will be played in random order .

67 En ■ Gatewa y If you set the “ DHCP ” se tting to “ Disable ”, you must specify a gate way address. Enter the gatewa y address provided by your ISP . ■ DNS Server If you set the “ DHCP ” se tting to “ Disable ”, you must specify a DNS server .
68 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
69 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listeni ng room, you can also enjoy playback in the ot her room, or as we ca ll Multi Zone. And, you can select a dif ferent source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V recei ver.
70 En If you’ v e connected your Zone 2 speake rs to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V receiver” ( ➔ 69 ), you must set the “ Powe red Zo ne 2 ” setting to “ Act ” (Activated).
71 En Contr olling Zone 2 with the Remote Contr oller Note • T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE2 first . • ZONE2 turns red while Zone 2 is on. Note • Only analog input sources are output b y the ZONE 2 LINE OUT and FRONT WID E/ZONE 2 L/R terminals.
72 En T o control the A V rec eiv er with the remote controller while you’ re in Zone 2, you’ll need a commercially a vail- able multiroom remot e c ontrol kit for each zone.
73 En Controlling iP od & Other Components Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music f iles stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V recei ver’ s USB port. Playing Music Files on the iP od/iPhone This section explains ho w to play music files on the iPod/ iPhone.
74 En *2 The following iPod mode ls ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can on ly be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/iP hone, the A V receiver stores the mode. This means that if you disconnect when in Extended Mode, the A V receive r will start in Extended Mode when you next conn ect the iPod/iPhone.
75 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
76 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .

78 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-768M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
79 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remo te control code s provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled b y pointing the remote c ontroller at the A V recei ver, not the component.
80 En If you want to control an Onkyo co mponent by pointing the remote controller directly at it, us e the following remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D VD .

82 En The A V recei ver’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD player’ s remote controller , the remote controller can learn it, and then transmit the exact same command when it s 1 is pressed in t he CD remote mode.
83 En Making Macr os Each ACTIVITIES can store one macro, and each macro can contain up to 32 co mmands. Note • Once you hav e taught a new m acro commands, the original macro will no longer work. If you retrie ve it, you will hav e to taught again.
