18 Connecting the A V receiver About Speaker s A and Speakers B Speakers A and Speakers B allo ws you to hav e two speaker c onf igurations of up to 7.2 spea k ers. Each configuration has its own pair of stereo front speakers and can use the same subwoofer , center, sur round, and surround back speakers, as required.
19 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued Speaker Config uration For 9.2-channel surround-sound playback, you need nine speak ers and two powered subwoo fers. The following table indicates the ch annels you should use de pending on the number of speakers that you have .
20 Connecting the A V receiver —Contin ued Using Dipole Speak ers Y ou can use dipole speak ers for the surround left and right, surround back left and right speake rs. Dipole speakers output the same sound in two directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate ho w they shoul d be positioned.

The A V receiv er won’ t pick up any radio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
28 Connecting the A V receiver —Contin ued Connecting an Outdoo r FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a co mmercially a vailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obta i ned when installed in an attic or loft.

30 Connecting the A V receiver —Contin ued About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mu ltimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, D VD/BD players, set-top boxes, and other video components.
31 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued Making HDMI Connections ■ Video Signals Digital video signals recei ved b y th e HDMI IN jacks are norma lly output by the HDMI MAIN OUT and SUB OUT for display on your TV . Composite vi deo, S-V ideo, and component video sou rces can be upcon verted for the HDMI output.

50 First Time Setup —Contin ued In this Instruction Manual, illustratio ns from the onscreen menu or e xplanations referring to the menu will be in the same language as the Instruction Manua l. The default Language setting for th e onscreen menu is English.

63 First Time Setup —Continued • Make the room as quiet as possible. Background noise can disrupt the room measurement s. Close windows, silence cell phones, televisions, radios , air conditioners, fluorescent lights, home appliances, light dimmers, or other devices.

68 Basic Oper ations —Continued Y ou can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers, except when the Direct, Pu re Audio or THX listening mode is selected. ■ Bass Y ou can boost or cut lo w-frequency sounds output by the front speakers from –10 dB to +10 dB in 2 dB steps.

73 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can st ore your fav orite stations as presets for quick selectio n. Listening to the Radio T uning into Rad io Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.
74 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fa vorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note: Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identif ication (see page 105). Its name is di splayed instead of the band and frequency .

Here you can specify the distance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speak er arri ves at the listener’ s ears as the sound designer intended.
