12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie theater or concert hall. W ith Blu-ra y Discs or DVDs, you can enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 9.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need 9 speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
14 En • Don’t connect mo re than one cable to each speak e r terminal. Doing so may damage the A V receiver. • Don’t connect one speaker to se veral terminals.
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En Connecting a P o wer Amplifier If you want to use a more powerful po wer amplif ier and use the A V recei ver as a preamp, connect it to the PRE O UT jacks, and conne ct all speakers to the po wer amplifier .
17 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checked all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to mak e good connecti ons (loose connecti ons can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
18 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 45 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 99 ) and “Using an RIHD-comp atible TV , Player, or Record er” ( ➔ 100 ).

20 En Note *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned off . If your turntabl e (MM) doesn’t h ave a p hono preamp, connect to PHONO IN .
21 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radi o signals without any antenn a connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner .
22 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
23 En ■ “Monitor Out” setti ng set to “Anal og” V ideo input signals flo w through the A V receiver as show n, with composite video, S-V ideo and PC IN (Analog RGB) sources being upcon verted for the component video output. Use this setting if y ou connect the A V receiv er’ s COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT to your TV .
24 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Receiver (Europ ean and Asian models) T o comple tely shut down the A V receiver, set PO WER to the OFF position ( ). T urning On 1 (European and Asian models) Set PO WER to the ON position ( ) on the fr ont panel.
25 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the language used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Lang uage” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 57 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remo te controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows.
26 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute functi on is cancelled when the A V rece i ver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
27 En The Home menu pro vides you quick access to frequently used menus without ha ving to go through the long stan- dard menu. This menu enables you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 If Pure Audio or Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynami c EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected.
28 En Note • Always turn do wn the volume before connecting your head- phones. • While the headphones plug is inserted in the PHONES jack, the Headphone indicator , speaker/channel indicator FL and FR lights. (The Powered Zo ne 2/3 speakers are n ot turned off.
29 En W ith the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ automa tically determines the number of speakers connected, the ir si ze for purposes of bass man- agement, optimum crossover frequencies to the subw oofer (if present), and distances fro m the primary li stening posi- tion.
30 En Note • When Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 49 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 9 ). • Y ou can cancel Au dyssey MultEQ Room Co rrection and Speaker Setup at an y point in this procedure simply by discon- necting the setup microphone.

32 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. Y ou can cha nge the frequency steps ( ➔ 58 ). Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A uto tuning mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator lights.
33 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 53 ).
34 En Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by ty pe. Listening to T raffic Ne ws (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press R T/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
35 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be turned on for recording.

42 En Advanced Oper ations Adv a nced Setup The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a con venient w ay to change the A V recei ver’ s vario us settings. Settings ar e organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings b y using the on-screen display .
43 En Explanatory Notes Main Menu Input /Output Assign Monitor Out On the “ Monitor Out ” settings, you can select whether or not to ha ve the video source s’ images output through the HDMI output, as well as whet her to ha ve the onscreen setup menu output through the HDMI output or through an analog output.
44 En Changing “Moni tor Out” setting manuall y ■ Resolution Y ou can specify the output r esolution for the HDMI output and COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT and have the A V receiv er upconv ert th e picture resolution as neces- sary to match the resolution suppo rted by your TV .
45 En HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . F or example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI 2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
46 En ■ BD/D VD , VCR/DVR , CBL/SA T , GAME , PC , AU X , TV/CD , PHONO , PORT ` IN 1 , IN 2 : Select a corresponding comp onent video input that the video component has been connected.
47 En Main menu Speaker Setup Here you can check the settings made by Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function, or set them manually , which is useful if you change one of the connect ed speakers after using Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function.
48 En ■ Surr Back Ch ` 1ch : Select if only one surround back speaker is con- nected. ` 2ch : Select if tw o (left and right) surround back speakers are connected. Note •I f t h e “ Surr Back ” setting is set to “ None ” ( ➔ 47 ), this setting cannot be selected.
49 En Equalizer Settings W ith the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers indi vidually with a 7-band equalizer . The volume of each speaker can be set ( ➔ 48 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : Y ou can adjust the equaliz er for each speaker ma nu- ally .
50 En ■ Preserve THX Settings ` Ye s : Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® / Audyssey Dynamic V olume ® will not be acti ve in THX listening mode. ` No : Audyssey Dynamic EQ / Audyssey Dynamic V olume will be acti ve in THX listening mode depending on the setting.
51 En ■ PLIIz Height Gain The Height Gain Control in Dolb y Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are thre e settings, “ Low ”, “ Mi d ” and “ High ”, and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order .
52 En Items can be set individuall y for each input selector . Main menu Sour ce Setup A udysse y When Audyssey MultEQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equa lizer ” ( ➔ 49 ) will be set to “ A udyssey ” and the “ Dynamic EQ ” will be set to “ On ”.
53 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input level for each input selector indi vidually . Th is is useful if one of your source components is louder o r quieter than the others.
54 En T o correct a character: Note • T o name a radio preset, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ 33 ). • (North American models) Y ou cannot enter a custom name for SIRIUS radio presets. •“ Name Edit ” is not operable when the input selector is set to “ NET/USB ”.
55 En ■ Picture Mode *1 ` Custom : All settings c an be performed manually . ` ISF Day : Setting when a r oom is bright. ` ISF Night : Setting when a room is dark. ` Cinema : Selected wh en the picture source is movie f ilm, etc. ` Game : Selected when the picture source is game console.
56 En ■ Gamma *2*4 ` –3 to 0 to +3 Adjust the balance of in coming picture R (red), G (green), and B (blu e) color data signal to the output color data signal. ■ Red Brightness *2*4 ` –50 to 0 to +50 W ith this setting you can adjust the pictu re red brightness.
57 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD W ith this setting, you can specify the listening mode to be used when a DTS or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio format digital audio signal is played (D VD, LD, CD, etc.). Speci fies the def ault listening mode for DTS- HD Master Audio sources, su ch as Blu-ray or HD D VD (input via HDMI).
58 En Tu n e r For FM/AM tuning to wo rk properly , you must specify the FM/AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting i s changed, all radio presets w ill be deleted. ■ FM/AM Frequency Step (North American and T aiwan mo dels) ` 200kHz/10kHz : Select if 200 kHz/10 kHz steps are used in your area.
59 En ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off : Select “ Off ” if you don’t want to use audio return channel (ARC) function. ` Au t o : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the A V receiv er.
60 En ■ Universal P ort ` via NET : Y ou can update the firmware via In ternet. Check the network connection before update. ` via USB : Y ou can update the firmware from a USB mass stor- age device. Y ou can update the Onk yo dock’ s firmw are. Do not shut- down the po wer of the A V receiv er while update.
61 En A udyssey Settings ■ Dynamic E Q See “Dynamic EQ” of “Source Setup” ( ➔ 52 ). ■ Dynamic V olume See “Dynamic V olume” of “Source Setup” ( ➔ 52 ).
62 En A udio Selector Y ou can set priorities of audio output when there are both digital and analog inputs. ■ A udio Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the A V recei ver. *1 W ith this selection the TV’ s audio can be automati- cally selected as a priori ty among other assignments.
63 En NET/USB The A V recei ver is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music files stored on your computer or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
64 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V receiv er to a network with Internet access ( ➔ 63 ). Y ou can select Internet rad io stations by connecting to the A V recei ver from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
65 En Registering Pre sets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio screen, and then press ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pres et the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
66 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , during playback (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current folder will be played in random order .
67 En Supported Audio File Fo rmats For serv er playback, the A V receiver supports the follo w- ing music file formats: MP 3, WMA, W A V , FLA C, Ogg V orbis, AA C and LPCM. Not all servers support all for- mats. ■ MP3 • MP3 files must be MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3 for- mat with a sampling rate of 8 kHz, 11.
68 En Server Requirements The A V receiv er can play digital music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the followin g tech- nologies: • W indows Media Player 11 • W indows Media Connect 2.
69 En Using Remote Playbac k W indows and the Windo ws logo are trademarks of the Microsoft group of companies. Note • When modifying network settings, after modifying it is neces- sary to execute “ Sa ve ”. This section explains ho w to conf igure the A V recei ver’ s network settings manually .
70 En Note • This procedure can also be perfor med on the A V receiver by using SETUP , arrows, and ENTER . ■ Mac Address This is the A V receiv er’ s MA C (Media Access Control) address.
71 En USB can be used to play mu sic f iles stored on USB mass storage de vices (e.g., USB flash dri ves and MP3 players), which can be plugged into the A V receiver’ s USB po rt. Supported Audio File Fo rmats For USB mass storage de vice pl ayback, the A V rece iv er supports music file formats.
72 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
73 En Multi Zone In addition to your main listeni ng room, you can also enjoy playback in the ot her room, or as we ca ll Multi Zone. And, you can select a dif ferent source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V recei ver.
74 En There are two w ays you can connect Zone 3 speak ers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er. 2. Connect them to an amp in Zone 3. Connecting Y our Zone 3 Speakers Dire ctly to the A V receiver This setup allows 7.1-channel playback in your main room and 2-channel stereo playback in Zone 3, with a different source in each room.
75 En If you’ ve connected your Zone 2/3 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V re ceiv er” ( ➔ 73 ) or “Connecting Y our Zon.
76 En T o use the same vo lume lev el as when the A V receiv er was last turned of f, select “ Last ”. The “ Zone2 Power On V olume ” and “ Zone3 Po wer On Vo l u m e ” cannot be set higher than the “ Zone2 Maximum Vo l u m e ” and “ Zone3 Maximum V olume ” setting.
77 En Adjusting the V olume for Zones Muting Zones Adjusting the T one and Balance of Zone 2 Note • Zones can also be unmuted by adjusting the volume. • The Zone 2 volume, tone, and balance function ha ve no ef fect on ZONE 2 PRE O UT when the “ Zone2 Out ” setting is set to “ Fixed ” ( ➔ 75 ).
78 En Using a Multir oom Kit with a Cabinet In this setup, the IR receiv er picks up the infrared signals from the remote controller a nd feeds them to the A V receiv er located in the cabi net via the connecting block.
79 En Controlling iP od & Other Components Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music f iles stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V recei ver’ s USB port. Playing Music Files on the iP od/iPhone This section explains ho w to play music files on the iPod/ iPhone *1 .
80 En *2 The following iPod mode ls ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can on ly be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/iP hone, the A V receiver stores the mode. This means that if you disconnect when in Extended Mode, the A V receive r will start in Extended Mode when you next conn ect the iPod/iPhone.
81 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
82 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .
83 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons • With some iPod models, generations and RI Docks, certain buttons may not work as expected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, please r e fer to the instruction ma nual of RI Dock. *1 This button do es not turn the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or of f.
84 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-771M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
85 En Tip • If you cannot access the data base, a message “ C annot connect to database. ” will appear. Press ENTER to return to the previous step. • If the brand na me is not found, use r to select “ Not Listed ”, and then press EN TER . The following screen appears.
86 En Y ou’ ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote control codes provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are su bject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remo te controll er at the A V receiv er, not the component.
87 En Y ou can reset a REMO TE MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can reset the remot e controller to its default setting s. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been programm ed with the remote control code for your component, you can control your component as below .
88 En Note • With some components, certai n button s may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p func tion is not supported. The p sup- ported by the A V receiv er is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
89 En V ia onscreen menu, you can spec ify what actions will be taken b y the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode ( ➔ 28 ). Here ar e the default settings. Activities Setup 1 Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by SETUP . The main menu appears onscreen.
90 En The A V recei ver’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmit ting, for example, the Play command from you r CD player’ s remote controller , the remote control ler can learn it, and then transmit the exact same c ommand when its 1 is pressed in the CD remote mode.
91 En Note • The following b uttons cannot learn new comman ds: REMO TE MODE , ALL OFF , MY MO VIE , MY TV , MY MUSIC and MODE . • The remote controller can lear n approximately 70 to 90 com- mands, although this will be less if commands that use a lot of memory are learned.
