Proper Shutter Release. Practice b e f o r e l oading the film. Depress the shutter release button halfway to lock th e focus. The green la mp next to the viewfinder lights. Depress the shutter release button fully to release the shutter and take the picture.
Slide the b ack cover release upward to o p e n t h e ba c k co ver . Do no t touch t he inside o f th e c am era , especially the lens. If there is dust or dirt on the le n s, remove it with a blower brush. Inser t the fi lm cartridge, making sure the film i s lying flat.
Correct. Make sur e the film i s lying flat before cl osing th e back cover. Incorrect. Push t he film cartridge gently as shown in (A) to position the film correctly. I f th e film i s n o t lying flat as shown in ( B ), the film ma y not advance to th e first frame.
Align the f il m leader wit h the mark Then press the right side o f the back cover an d close it secu rely. The f ilm automatically advances to th e first frame. Th e film does no t overlap any of the positioning guides shown on the left. Then close the back cover.
TAKING P I C T U R E S Op en the lens barrier u n t i l you fee l a click. Th e len s extends slightly, the flash pop s up, an d th e LC D panel a ctivates. When th e flash is hel d down, the tw o indicators next t o the viewfinder blink. Th e camera will n ot activate.
Aim the camera at your subject. Use the zoom le ver f or telephoto or wid e- angle photography. How to Use the Zo om Lever Telephoto: P ul l the lever to the "T " sid e to zoom in. Maximum telephoto focal length: 80 m m Wi de angle: Pu s h the lever to t h e " W " side to zoo m out.
Depress th e shutter release button halfway to adjust the focus. Focus has been correctly adjusted and the green la mp lights. Exposure also will be adjusted automatically. Position th e autofocus mark on your subject. Autofocus m a r k D o no t loo k directly at the sun through the viewfinder.
Working Distance T h e focus range o f the camera is 0. 8 m (2. 6 f t ) to (infinity). When the subject is closer tha n 0.8 m ( 2.6 ft) , the shutter w ill not release, (The green lamp blinks.) When the subject i s extremely close to t he camera, the subject will be ou t of focus although the shutter releases.

U SI N G THE FOCUS LO CK To avoid taking out o f focus pictures When the ma in subject is not within the autofocus mark. U se the focus lock. The autofocus mar k must be positioned on the subject i n this case. The camera wil l focus o n t he bac kgro und behind t he subjects and the subjects will b e out o f focus.
Reposition your subjects i n the picture frame wh il e keeping th e shutter release button depressed halfway. Then press the shutter release bu tton fully. In such situations as the above, u se the focus loc k by focusing on a different subject at a similar distance.
AFTER SHOOTING Close the lens barrier slowly a nd carefully. The lens and flash will retract automatically. Close the lens barrier completely. The display goes out. Caution : Do not forcibly close th e lens barrier as it wi ll interfere wi th le ns retraction .
UNLOADING THE FILM The camera automatically rewi nds the film when y ou reach the end of a roll. After t h e motor stops and starts blinking on the LC D panel, o pe n t he back co ve r and remove the film. Notes: The number of exposures remaining decreases during winding.
TAKING PANORAMA PICTU RES Set the switch to PANORAMA to engage the Panorama mode. Se t the switch bac k to the original position to restore the Standard mode. Note: Always set the panorama switch to either end, no t midway between th e two ends. A. Viewfinder i n the Standard mode.
At about 0.8 m (2.6 f t.) the shaded ar e a in the illustration becomes the image area. CLOSE-UP CORRECTION IN THE PANORAMA M OD E 30.
NOTES REGARDING PANORAMA FORMAT PR INTS Availability o f Panorama format film processing facilities varies according t o area. We recommend that y ou consult y our local film processor or camera dealer before taking pictures in the Panorama mode.
HOW TO GET PANORAMA PRINTS IN THE UNITED STATES For Fil m S hot On l y in Panorama Mode Pl ea se affix th e sticker A and b e sure to ask specifically f o r Panorama prints from your processing lab. For Fil m Shot in Both Panorama and Standard Modes These prints may appear slightly overexposed.
USING TH E FLASH MODES This camera has six flash modes. Select t h e flash mode according to your shooting conditions and needs. How t o select the f lash mode: As y ou press the FLASH mo d e button, the mode switches as shown on p. 34 . Th e selected flash mo de is displayed on the LC D panel.

RED-EYE REDUCING FLASH Significantly reduces the phenomenon of "red-eye" (wh en a subject's e ye s appear re d in flash photography). I n the flash mode, the camer a will fire a series of low-power pre-flashes before the regular flash. This ma kes t h e subject's pupils contract, significantly reducing red-eye.
OF F ( Fla sh Override) When you don't want the flash to fire even in the dark or when you w ant to shoot such subjects as fireworks. In t he Fl ash -Off mode, the flash doe s not f ir e eve n in low-light conditions. Use this mode in situations where flash photography is n o t desired or is prohibited or in twilight o r night scenes.
FIL L-IN FLASH (Forced Activation) When yo u want to fir e the flash every shot. I n t he Flash mode, the flash fires r egardless of available light. Fo r example, this mode c an be used to brighten up a subject's shaded f a c e or under artificial lighting such as backlight or fluorescent light.
When taking pictures of people with a night background, this mode produces clear images of both. Notes: Since a sl ow shutter speed (down to 4 seconds) i s automatically selected in low-light situations, use a tripod to prevent blurred pictures caused by camera shake.
RED-EYE REDUCING NIGHT SCENE FLASH MOD E Significantly reduces the "red-eye" phenomenon o ften seen when people a re photographed against a night background. The camera will fi re a serie s of low-power pre-flashes before the f la sh fires. This makes th e subject's pupils contract, significantly reducing th e red-eye.
SPOT MO D E To focus and set the exposure for a selected area. Press the button and button at the same time. is displayed on the LC D panel. Press the and the flash mode buttons at the same time o r close the lens barrier to cancel the S po t mode. Position the aut ofo cus m ark on you r subject, and press the shutter release bu t t o n halfway.
Reposition your subject in the picture frame whil e keeping the shutter re leas e bu tto n depress ed halfway. Then press the shutter release button fu lly. Focus and exposure ca n b e adjusted at different points f ro m the autofocus frame using th e Spo t m ode.
Notes: Th e focus an d exposure wi ll be locked when the shutter release button is depressed halfway. The selftimer is di sengaged when the shutter is re l ea s e d. button again. Ai m at your subject, and press the shutter release button. 10 sec.: Selftimer indicator lights 2 sec.
REMOTE CONTROL (optional) Press the button. is displayed on the LC D panel. A ft e r shooting, press t he but ton again to cancel the Selftimer/Remote Control mode. Remote control operation is canceled automatically when not in use fo r mor e than 20 minutes.
Ai m the remote control at th e camer a, and press the button. Th e shutter will b e released after about 3 seconds. Notes: Us e the remo te control within the range shown at left. T he camera will focus on t he subject directly in front of it. The re mo te control ma y no t work when the subject is backlit.
CORRECTING THE DATA Press the MODE button for two seconds or longer. The y ear indication wi ll s tar t blinking. Press the SET button to correct the year. If y ou press the button once, the numbe r on th e display will advance by 1 . An d i f y o u keep i t pressed, the numbers will ru n i n rapid succession.
Press the MODE button again. Th e month indication wi l l start blinking. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to set the hour and minutes. No te : A s you pr es s the mod e button, th e blinking indi cati on changes in the order of year, month, da y, hour, and minute.
PRINTING THE DATE AND TIME Choose the desired mode w ith the MOD E button. The mod e will switch i n the described order b y pressing the MOD E button. The quartzdate use s the same power source as t he main unit. M ake sure t o correct th e dat a after th e battery is replaced.
QUESTIONS A ND AN SW E RS Q: How long will th e battery last? A: A ne w 3V lithium battery wil l las t fo r roughly 1 5 rolls of 24-exposure fi l m on which th e flash was use d on half of all the shots (determined under O l ympus test conditions). If you do not use the fl ash an d zoom very often, th e battery wi ll last much longer.
CARE A ND STORAGE Do not leave the camera in any place exposed to excessive heat, humidity, o r direct sunlight — f o r example, in a c a r or on the beach. D o not expose the camera to formalin or naphthalene. I f th e camera gets wet, wipe it with a dr y towel as soon as possible.
Do not leave the camera o n o r n e a r a television, refrigerator, or other appliance wi t h a magnetic field. Do no t expose th e camera to du st or sand as this could cause serious damage. Do not shake or shock the camera. Do not apply excessive force to th e zoom lens.
When transporting the camera from a c o l d place to a w ar m place or in th e event o f a sudden temperature change, pu t the camera into a plastic bag. This allows the cam era's temperature to change slowl y. Once the camera ha s adjusted t o t he new t emperature, you can r emove it from the bag and use it.
CARING FOR YOUR W EATHERPROOF CAMERA This camera is weatherproof; however, it is not designed f o r underwater use . Please not e the following warnings and u se th e camera correctly. The camera can wi thsta nd splashing w ater (e.g., seaside, poolside, et c.
Do not submerge the camera or attempt to take pictures underwater. Rubber gaskets are located inside the rea r of the camera. Check the gaskets fo r wear an d carefully remove an y sand an d d ust t o maintain a weatherproof seal. If the cam era has been splashed by water, etc.
BATTERY HANDLING NOTES When the camera is not used fo r an extended period of time, remove the battery. Ke ep a spare battery on han d when going on a lon g trip or to a cold area. Sweat, oil, a nd so on can prevent a battery's terminals fro m making electrical contact.
WARNINGS NEVER TR Y TO DISASSEMBLE, RECHARGE, OR SHORT-CIRCUIT A BATTERY. NEVER EXPOSE A BATTERY TO EXCESSIVE HEAT OR OPEN FLAMES. KE EP THE BATTERY OUT OF THE REACH O F CHILDREN. IF A CHILD SWALLOWS A BATTERY, CONTACT A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. USE ONE 3V LITHIUM BATTERY (DL123A OR CR123A).
REMOTE CONTROL (optional) HANDLING Keep the remote control ou t of the reach of children. I f a child swallows t he remote control, contact a physician immediately. Never try to disassemble th e remote control. Never expose the remote control to excessive h e at or op en flame.
TROUBLESHOOTING OPERATING PROBLEMS The camera does n ot work. The len s barrier is not opened. Open the lens barrier completely. ( p. 20) Th e alignment o f the battery terminals is not c orrec t. Reload the battery correctly. (p . 13) The ba ttery is exhausted.
The LC D display goes of f suddenly. If you don't use the camera, the L CD goes of f after fou r and half minutes. Close th e lens barrier and open it again or operate the zoom lever to turn the LCD back on. I n addition, the power is turned of f automatically after 4.
The green lamp blinks, and the shutter release button will not release. The camera is closer t h a n 0.8 m (2.6 f t) to the subject. Mov e the camera back t o distance more than 0. 8 m (2. 6 ft ) from the subject. (p. 2 3 ) The orange lamp blinks, and the shutter will n ot release.
The viewfinder is out of focus. Diopter dial i s no t adju sted. Adjust th e diopter d ial until image is clear. (p. 9) PROBLEMS WIT H PRINTED PICTURES The picture is ou t of focus. The camera moved when the shutter re leas e button wa s pressed. H ol d the camera correctly an d press the shutter release button gently.
The autofocus window w as blocked, such as by a finger. Ho ld th e cam era correctly, kee ping you r fi ngers clear of th e autofocus windows. (p. 15) Th e subject was closer than the minimum working distance to th e lens (0.8 m/2.6 ft). Shoot f ro m mo re than 0.
The autofocus didn't wor k co rre ct ly . There are som e subjects that are di ff icu lt f or the autofocus to lock on. These include: glo ssy or reflective surfaces, black o b je c t s, subjects behind glass or wire m esh, f lame s an d smoke, excessively bright light w i th in the picture area.
