PAPER RE COMMENDATIONS > 15 CASS E T TE T R AY If you have identica l paper stock loaded in the multi purpose tr ay, you can have the prin ter automatically switch to the other tra y when the current tray runs out of paper. When printing from Windows applications, this function is enabled in the driver settings.

Fan the paper t o be loaded at the edg es ( 1) and in the middle (2) to ensure th at all sheets are pr operly separated, then tap the edges of the s tack on a fl at surface to m ake it flush ag ain (3).

Adjust the rear stopper (1) and paper guides (2) to the size of paper being used. To prevent p aper jams: l Do not leave spac e be tween the paper an d the guides and rear stopper.

Stac king capac ity is approx imately 250 sheets, depending on paper weight. 6. For face up printing, make sure the face up (rear) stac ker (3) is open and the paper supp ort (4 ) is extended .

COLOUR PRINTING > 28 C OLOUR PRINTING The printer drivers supplied wit h your printer provide several controls for changing the colour output. For general use the automatic settings will suffice, providing reasonable default settings that will produce good results for most documents.
COLOUR PRINTING > 29 Viewin g condition s A print can look very different under different lighting conditions. For example, the colours in a print may look differen t when viewed standing next to a sunlit window , compared to how they look under standard office fluorescent lighting.
COLOUR PRINTING > 30 TIPS F OR PRINTING IN COLOUR The following guidelines may help yo u to achieve good colour output from your printer. PRINTING PHOTOGRAPHIC IM AGES Use the Monitor (6500k) Perceptual setting. If the colours look too dull, try the Monitor (6500k) Vivid or Digit al Camera settings.

COLOUR PRINTING > 33 US ING THE C OLOUR SWATC H FEAT URE To use the Colour Swatch feature, you must install the Colour Swatch Utility. This is supplied on the CD-ROM that was supplied with your printer. The Colour Swatch function prints charts which contain a range of sample colours.

The Status Mo nitor provides a readable indication of the printer st atus as displ ayed on the in dicator LEDs on the Status P anel ( See “The Status Panel” on page 9.

PRINTER STATE TAB This tab is visible by default on op ening the Status Monitor and displays detailed information about the status of the printer.

The User Settings tab has the menu items on the left and allows you to configure a selected setti ng on the right. Click t he Save button to save the new setting or the Undo button to undo the change.

THE STATUS MONITOR > 39 PREFERENCE S TAB Selecting this tab provides the means to choose the information displayed by the Status Monitor and how/when the Status Monitor appears. The default Alert view setting (Pop up on alerts) en sures that the Status Monitor pops up to inform you of a condition that requires your attention e.
THE STATUS MONITOR > 40 PRINT ER FUNCTIONS (USER SETTINGS) The printer settings made from the Status Monitor can be seen collectively on a printed Menu Map (o r Status Page).
THE STATUS MONITOR > 41 MEDIA MENU This menu provides adjustment to suit a wide range of print media. MP TRAY US AGE DO NOT USE WHEN MISMA TCH If a document to be printed demands a paper siz e not insta lled in the selected tr ay, th e printer can automatically feed from th e multi purpose tray instead.

THE STATUS MONITOR > 43 C OLOUR MENU The printer automatically adjust s colour balance and density at appropriate i ntervals, optimising th e printed output for bright white paper viewed in natural daylight cond itions. The items on this menu provide a means of changin g the default settings for special or particularly difficult print jobs.
THE STATUS MONITOR > 44 SY STEM CONFIGUR ATION MENU This menu adjusts general printer settings to suit the way you prefer to work. THE STATUS MONITOR > 46 SY STEM ADJUSTMENT MENU This menu provides fine ad justment of image position on the printed page in steps of 0.25mm. MAINTENANC E MENU This menu provides access to vari ous printer mainten ance functions.
THE STATUS MONITOR > 47 This is particularly useful if you d o not have a full set of replacement consumables to hand a nd you need to know how soon you will need them. PRINTING SETTINGS To print a list o f the printer settings: 1. Start the Status Monitor .

As a guide, the life expectancy of these items is: l T oner — 3,000 A4 pages at 5% co verage, whic h means that 5% of the addressab le print area is printed with this colour .
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 50 C ONSUM ABLE OR DER DETAILS * Aver age life: 20 % pages at continuous print, 50% pages at 3 pages per job and 30% pages at 1 page per job. Only use genuine Oki Original co nsumables to ensu re the best quality and performance from your hardware.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 51 T ONER C ARTRIDGE R EPLAC EMENT The toner used in this printer is a very fine dry powder. It is contained in four cartridges: one each fo r cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Have a sheet of paper ha ndy so that you have some where to place th e used cartridge while you install the new one.

Carry out one of the fol lowing: (a) If you are replacing a toner cartridge that has been supplied with your prin ter (release lever has 3 positions), pull the coloured toner release lever on the cartridge to be replaced towa rds the front of the printer, 1.

(b) If you are repl acing any other toner cartridge (lever has 2 positions), pull the coloured toner release lever (1) on the cartridge to be replaced fully towards the front of the printer.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 55 4. Lift the right-hand end of the cartridge and then draw the cartridge to the right to r elease the left -hand end as shown, and withdr aw the toner cartridg e from the printer .
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 56 7. Gently shak e the new cartridge from end to end sev eral times to loosen and distribut e the toner evenly in side the cartridge. 8. Remov e the wrapping mat erial and peel off the adhes ive tape from the under side of the cartridge.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 57 then lower the right end of the cartridge onto the image drum unit . 11. Pressing g ently down on the cartridge to ensure that it is firmly seated, pu sh the coloured l ever (1) towards the r ear of the printer. This will lock the cartridge into place and release ton er into the imag e drum unit.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 58 IMAG E DRUM REPLAC EMENT Switch off the printer and allow the fuser to cool for about 10 minutes before opening the cover. The printer contains four image drums: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. 1. Press the c over rel ease and open the printer ’s top cover f ully .

REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 60 4. Put the cartridge down gently onto a piece of paper to prevent toner from marking your furni ture and to a void damag ing t he green drum surface. 5. With the co loured toner release l ever (1) to the right, pull the lever to wards you .
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 61 7. T ake the new image drum c artridge out of its pack aging and plac e it on the piec e of paper where the ol d cartridge w as placed. K eep it t he same way round as the old unit. Pack the old cartridge inside the pack aging material for disposal.

Holding the c omplete assemb ly by its top centre, lower it into plac e in the p rinter, locating the pegs at eac h end into their slots in the sides of the printer cavity . 11. Final ly , close the top c over and pr ess down firmly at both sides so that the c over latc hes closed.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 63 REPL ACING THE BELT UNIT The belt unit is located under the fo ur image drums. This unit requires replacement approximat ely every 50,000 pages. Switch off the printer and allow the fuser to cool for about 10 minutes before opening the cover.

REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 65 4. Locate the two fa steners (5) at eac h side of the belt and the lifting bar (6) at the front end. 5. T urn the two fasteners 90° to the lef t.

Switch off the printer and allow the fuser to cool for about 10 minutes before opening the cover. 1. Press the c over rel ease and open the printer ’s top cover f ully .
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 67 2. Identify the fuser handle (1) on the t op of the fuser unit. 3. Pull the tw o fuser retaining levers (2) tow ards the front of the printer so that they are f ully upright. 4. Holding the fuser by its handle (1), lift the fuser stra ight up and out of the printer.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 68 7. Lower the fuser into the printer , locating the two lugs (3) into their slots in the metal partition which separ ates the fuser area from the image drums. 8. Push the two retainin g levers (2) towards the rear of the printer to lock the fuser in place.
REPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS > 69 CLE A N I NG T H E L E D H E AD Clean the LED he ad when print ing does not come out clea rly, has white lines or when text is blurred. 1. Switc h off the printer and open the top cover . 2. Gently wipe the LED he ad surfac e with LED l ens cle aner or soft tissue.
INSTALLING ADDITIONAL MEMORY > 70 INSTALLI NG ADD I TI ONAL M EM OR Y This section explains how to install addit ional RAM memory into your printer as a memory upgrade.
INSTALLING ADDITIONAL MEMORY > 71 MEMOR Y UPGRADE The basic printer model comes equipped with 32MB of main memory. This can be upgrade d with an additional mem ory board contai ning 64MB or 256MB, giving a maximum total memory capacity of 288MB. Installation takes a few minutes, and requires a medium size cross- head (Philips type) screwdriver.
INSTALLING ADDITIONAL MEMORY > 72 4. Remo ve the scr ew securing th e right-h and side c over . 5. Lift the edge of the side cover slightly at the two points shown, and pull the c over away from the printer at the top. Lift the cover slightly to detach it from the printer .
INSTALLING ADDITIONAL MEMORY > 73 9. If the RAM expans ion slot alre ady contai ns a memory upgrade board, that board wil l have to be remove d before you can inst all the new one. T o remove it proceed as f ollows, otherwise skip to step 10. (a) Identify the locking clips (2 ) at each end of the RAM expansion slot (1).
CLEARING PAPER JAMS > 74 C LEARIN G PAPER JAMS Provided that you follow the recommen dations in this guide on use of print media, and you keep the media in g ood condition prior to use, your printer should give years of reliable service. Howev er, paper jams occasionally do occur, and this section explains how to clear them quickly and simply.
CLEARING PAPER JAMS > 75 3. Note the positions of the four cartridges. It will be neces sary to remove the four image drums to gain access to the paper path. 4. Holding it by its top centre, lift the cyan image drum, complete with its toner c artridge, up and out of the printer .

CLEARING PAPER JAMS > 77 l T o remove a sheet from the centr al area of th e belt (2), carefully separate the sheet from the belt surface and withdraw the sheet.
CLEARING PAPER JAMS > 78 8. Start ing with the cyan image drum unit n earest the fuser, replac e the four imag e drums into the drum cav ity, ma king sure to locate t hem in the correc t order.
CLEARING PAPER JAMS > 79 9. Lower the top co ver but do not press down to lat ch it closed yet. This will pr o tect the drums from exc essive exposure to room lighting while you chec k the remaining areas for jammed sheets. 10. Open the rear exit tray (5 ) and check for a sheet of paper in the rear p ath area (6).
