Getting Started > 11 R EAR VIEW When the rear paper stacker is folded do wn pa per exits the printer through the rear of the printer and is stacked here face up. This is mainly used for heavy pr int media. When used in conjunction with the multi purpose feed tray, the paper path th rough the printer is essentially straight.
Getting Started > 12 Power Save button on the control panel. The Power Save button illuminates while in Power Save Mode. S LEEP MODE Your machine transitions from power saving mode to sleep mode after a set peri od of time. In sleep mode the power consumption of the devi ce is minimal.
Paper recommendations > 13 P APER RECOMMENDATIONS Your printer wi ll handle a variety of print media, including a range of pa per weights and sizes, labels and envel opes. This section prov ides general advice on choice of media, and explains how to use each type.
Paper recommendations > 14 M ULTI PURPOSE TRAY The multi purpose tray can handle the same si zes as the cassette trays but in weights up to 220 g/m² . For very heavy paper stock use the face up (rear) paper stacker. This ensures that the paper path through th e printer is almost strai ght.
Loading paper > 15 L OADING PAPER C ASSETTE TRAYS 1. Re move the paper tray from the printer . 2. F an the paper to be loaded at the edges (1) and in the middle (2) to ensure that all sheets are properly separated, then tap th e edges of the stack on a flat surface to make it flush again (3).
Loading paper > 16 3. Load paper (letter headed paper face down and top edge towards the front of the printer), as shown. 4. Adjust the rear stopper (a) and paper guides (b) to the size of paper being used. 5. Close the paper tra y gently . To prevent paper jams: > Do not leave space b etween the paper and the guides and rear stopper .
Loading paper > 17 > Do not pull the paper tr ay out during prin ting (except as described below for the 2nd tra y). NOTE > If you have two trays and you are printing from the 1st (upper) tray, you can pull out the 2nd (lo wer) tray during printing to reload it.
Loading paper > 18 M ULTI PURPOSE TRAY 1. Open the multi purpose tr ay (a). 2. Fold out the paper supports (b). 3. Press gently down on the paper platform (c) to ensure it is latched down. 4. Load the paper and adjust the paper guides (d) to the size of paper being used.

If you hav e changed some printing preferen ces before and saved them as a set, you can recall them to a void having to set th em individually each time y ou need them.

Printing settings in Windows ( C301 and C511 only) > 23 S ETTING FROM WINDOWS CONTROL PANEL When you open the driver properties window direct ly from Windows, rather than from within an application program, a somewhat more extensive range of settings is provided.

Selecting this option would prevent that sit uation, but printing will be compl eted a little later , as the start is delayed.

Select File > Print . 5. T o save the current printer d river settings as a pres et, select Save As fro m the Preset menu.
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 27 Scale You can scale documents up or down to fit onto different paper sizes. To fit your document on a specific paper size, select Options in the Paper Handling drop-down m enu in the Print Options dialog box (see “Print options” on page 27 ).
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 28 Scheduler This option lets you choose whether to pri nt yo ur document immediately, or defer printing until later. You can also assig n a priority to a print job. These features are useful if you are printing la rge documents that take a long time to print.
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 29 Quartz Filter Choose a Quartz filter if you wish to apply a sp ecial effect to your print job, such as Sepia or Blue Tone. C OVER PAGE Choosing a cover page may help you to i dentify your printed document in a large pile of paper.
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 30 P RINT QUALITY Print quality Use this option to sele cts the print resolu tion. The ProQ2400 setti ng produces the best graphic images, but these imag es can take longer to print. Photo Enhance Use Photo Enhance to significantly improve qual ity when printing images.
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 31 Color matching Black Finish Use this option to control the way black is printed in colour documents. Select Composite Black (CMYK) to use all 4 toner colours to represen t black. This option i s recommended for color photos.
Printing settings in Mac OS X (C301 and C511 only) > 32 Paper size check Select Paper Size check if you want the printe r to warn you when the document paper size is different from the paper in the printer. A warning message is di splayed and printing co ntinues when you load the correct paper in the paper tray and press ONLINE .
Colour printing (C301 and C511 only) > 33 C OLOUR PRINTING (C301 AND C511 ONLY ) The printer drivers supplied wi th your machin e provide several contr ols for changing the colour output. For general use the automatic se ttings will suffice, providing reasonable default settings that will produce good results for most documents.
Colour printing (C301 and C511 only) > 34 How your software application disp lays colour Some graphics applications such as Corel Draw or Adobe Photoshop may display colour differently from “Office” applic ations such as Microsoft Word. Please see your application’s on-line help or user manual for more information.
Colour printing (C301 and C511 only) > 35 A CCESSING THE COLOUR MATCHING OPTIONS The colour matching options in the printer driver can be used to help match your print ed colours to the ones displayed on your monitor or from some other source, su ch as a digital camera.
Colour printing (C301 and C511 only) > 36 U SING THE COLOUR SWATCH FEATURE To use t he Colo ur Swatch feature, you mu st insta ll the C olour Sw atch Ut ility. Th is is supplied on the DVD-ROM that yo u received with your printe r. The Colour Swatch function prints charts which contain a range of sample col ours.

Menu functions > 43 RESOLUTION 600DPI 600x1200DPI 600DPI M-LEVEL Sets the default resolution fo r printing (dots per inch). 600x1200DPI uses more memory and requires more time to process, but pri n ts at a higher quality . TON E R S AVE LE V EL OFF LOW MIDDLE HIGH Set the toner s ave level.
Menu functions > 44 M EDIA MENU This menu provides adjustment to suit a wide range of print media. Y DIMENSION 127MILLIMETER ~ 297MILLIMETER ~ 1321MILLIMETER Specifies paper length of Custom paper as a default val ue . Sets a paper size in the same direction as the paper run direction.

Menu functions > 46 C OLOR MENU The printer automatically adjusts colour bala nce and density at appropriate intervals, optimising the printed output for bright white paper viewed in natural daylight condit ions. The items on this me nu provid e a means of changing the default settings for specia l or particularly difficul t print jobs.
Menu functions > 47 S YS CONFIG MENU This menu adjusts general printer setting s to suit the way you prefer to work. CMYK CONVERSION ON OFF Setting to “OFF” wi ll simplify the con version process of CMYK data, which will redu ce the proc essing time.
Menu functions > 48 PCL EMULATION This menu controls sett ings effective when th e printer is operati ng in PCL emul ation mode . WAIT TIMEOUT 5~ 40 SEC ~300, OFF Specifies how many seco nds the printer will wait when received data pauses before forcing a page eject.
Menu functions > 49 PPR EMULATION This menu controls setting s ef fective when the printer is op erating in PPR emulation mode. PEN WIDTH ADJUST ON /OFF When minimum width is specified in PCL, sometime s a 1-dot line, looks broken.
Menu functions > 50 FX EMULATION This menu controls settings ef fective when the printer is op erating in FX emulation mode. FIT TO LET TER DISABLE ENABLE Sets the printi ng mode that can fit prin t data, equivalent to 11 inches (66 lines), in the LETTER -size printable area.
Menu functions > 51 USB MENU This menu controls the operation of t he printer’s USB data interface. N ETWORK MENU This menu controls the operat ion of the pr inter’s 10Base-T/100Base- TX network interface. ITEM SETTINGS EXPLANATION SOFT RESET ENABLE / DISABLE Enables or disables the SOF T RESET command.
Menu functions > 52 FRAME TYPE AUTO / 802.2 / 802.3 / ETHERNET II / SNAP Applies to C331 and C531/ ES5431 only . Selects th e Ethernet MAC layer fr ame type. Display Condition: Ne tware should be enabled. IP ADDRESS SET AUTO / MANUAL Specifies whether IP addres s allocation is automatic (DHCP) or manually assigned.
Menu functions > 53 M EMORY MENU Not displayed as default . This menu is displayed onl y when set to EN ABLE in OP MENU of Administrator menu. This menu sets the conditions of memory allocated to the buffer and res ource. ITEM SETTINGS EXPLANATION RECEIVE BUF SIZE AUTO 0.

Menu functions > 55 U SAGE MENU This menu is for information onl y, and provides an indication of total usage of the printer and the expected life lef t in its consumable item s. This is particularly useful if you do not have a full set of replacement consumables to hand and you need to know ho w soon you will need them.

Menu functions > 58 OP MENU (cont.) FX EMULA TION ENABLE DISABLE Set up ENABLE/DISABLE condition for FX EMULA TION category . If DISABLE is selected, FX EMU LA TION category of USERS MENU will not appear . USB MENU ENABLE DISABLE Set up ENABLE/DISABLE condition for USB MENU category .
Menu functions > 59 HIGH HUM. MODE ON OFF If moistened paper (*) is curled significantly after printing, change th e setting to ON. After ON is selected, the warm-up time before printing may take a little longer . (*) Moistened paper means paper that has been left in a high humidity environment.
Menu functions > 60 SECURIT Y MENU (cont.) RESET CIPHER KEY EXECUTE Resets a cipher key to be used on an encrypted SD card. When this processing is done, all data stor ed on the SD card cannot be restored. After executi on, the following confirmation messages will appear .
Menu functions > 61 FILE SYS MAINTE2 CHK FILE SYS EXECUTE Executing th is function will resolve any mismatch between the actual and the displayed free space of the fi le system and recov er the management data (F A T informat ion). Note 1: It take s several seconds to complet e this funct ion.
Menu functions > 62 LANGUAGE MENU LANG INITIALIZE EXECUTE Initi alise the message file loaded in FLASH MEMORY . If NO is sele cted, the mac hine will go back to the source menu. The procedur e for clearing the disk will st art immediately after the menu and machi ne reboot.
Menu functions > 63 P RINT STATISTICS This menu should only be ch anged by the System Administrators. In order to gain access to this menu, follow the instructions in “How to change the setti ngs - administ rator” on page 39 , but hold down the Menu button instead of the OK button.
Maintenance > 64 M AINTENANCE R EPLACING CONSUMABLE ITEMS Only use genuine original consumables to ensure the best quality and performance from your hardware. Non origina l products may adversely affect your printer's performance an d invalidate your warranty.
Maintenance > 65 2. Note the positions of the four cartridges. It is essential that they go back in the same order . (a) Slide the coloured release collar on th e cartridge to be replaced fully towards the right hand side of the printer.
Maintenance > 66 5. Remo ve the new cartridge from its box but leave its wr apping material in place for the moment. 6. Gently shake the new cart ridge from end to end sever al times to loosen and distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. 7.
Maintenance > 67 11. Gently wipe the LED head surface with a clean, lint free cloth. 12. Finally , close the top cover and press down fi rmly at both sides so that the cover latches closed.
Maintenance > 68 R EPLACING THE TRANS FER BELT UNIT The belt unit is located und er the image drum assembly. Switch off the printer and allow the fuser to cool for about 10 minutes before opening the cover. 1. Press the cov er release and open the printer’ s top cover fully .
Maintenance > 69 4. Pull the locking leve rs at each side of the tr ansfer belt up and towards the front of the machine. 5. Using the locking lev ers (a), lift the belt (b) upw ards and withdraw from the machine. 6. Lower the new belt unit into place, with the drive gear tow ards the rear of the printer .
Maintenance > 70 F USER REPLACEMENT The fuser is located inside the printer just behind the toner cartri dges. 1. Press the cov er release and open the printer’ s top cover fully . 2. Identify the fuser handle (a) on the top of the fuser unit. 3.
Maintenance > 71 8. Push the two retaining levers (b) tow ards the rear of the printer t o lock th e fuser in place. 9. Finally , close the top cover and press down fi rmly at both sides so that the cover latches closed.
Maintenance > 72 C LEANING ... THE UNIT CASING 1. Switch the printer off . 2. Wipe the unit surface with a soft cloth moistened sparingly with water or neutr al detergent. 3. Use a soft dry cloth to dry t he unit surface. 4. Switch the printer on. .

Installing upgrades > 74 3. T urn locking screw (a) anti-clockwise and re move the inner access co ver (b). Place it safely to one side. 4. Carefully remove the new memory board from its wrappi ng. T ry to handle the board only by its short edges, avoiding contact wi th any metal parts as far as possi ble.

Installing upgrades > 76 SD CARD (C531/ES54 31 ONLY ) The optional SD card enables collating of prin ted pages and can be us ed to store over lays and macros, fonts, and secure or pr oof documents waiting to be printed. 1. Switch the printer off and di sconnect the AC power cable.
Installing upgrades > 77 5. Gently push the SD card into the slot as shown. 6. Replace t he inner access cover (b) and turn locking screw (a) clockwise to secure it shut. 7. Replace the access co ver and latch it closed. 8. Reconnect t he AC power cable and switch the printer on.
Installing upgrades > 78 A DDITIONAL PAPER TRAY 1. Switch the printer off and di sconnect the AC power cable. 2. Place additi onal paper tray on desired location. 3. Observing safety rules for li fting and, usin g locating guides, place printer on top of the additional paper tr ay .
Installing upgrades > 79 S ETTING THE DRIVER DEVI CE OPTIONS Once your new upgrade has been installed, yo u may need to update the printer driver so that the additional features are available to your applications. Accessor ies such as ad ditional paper trays will only be usable if the printer driver on your computer knows they are there.

This will protect the drum from exces sive exposure to room li ghting while you check t he remaining areas for jammed sheets. 9. Open the rear exit tray (h) and check for a sheet of paper in the rear path area (i).
Troubleshooting > 88 D EALING WITH UNSATISFACTORY PRINTING SYMPTOMS POSSIBLE CAUSES STEPS TO TAKE V ertical white li nes can be seen on the printed page. The LED head is dirty . Wipe the LED head with a soft, lint-free clo th. The toner is low. Open th e top cover and tap the cartridge a few times to evenly distribute any remaining toner .
Troubleshooting > 89 Horizont al Lines and spots appear periodically . When the inte rval is about 94mm (4in), the im age drum (the green tube) is damaged or dirty . Wipe it lightly wi th a soft cloth. Replac e the image drum cartridge when it is damaged.
