Loading the Paper Tray 19 GETTING STARTED L OADING THE P APER T RAY Paper T ray 1 can hold up to 250 sheets of medium weight paper—U.S. letter size, executive, UK quarto, folio, or A4. It also holds envelopes, transparencies, and sheets of labels. See Appendix B, “Media Specifications,” for a complete list of media that can be used.

27 CHAPTER 3 PRINTER OPTIONS O VERVIEW The SuperScript 4600N has several easily installed options available. Y ou can add an extra paper tray and feeder unit or a handy legal size paper tray . Y ou can also increase the printer ’s random-access memory (RAM).

Installation of the optional Legal Paper T ray is simple. 1. Remove the standard paper tray fr om the main feeder or the optional Paper T ray 2 unit (A) .
Adding Memory (SIMM) 31 PRINTER OPTIONS A DDING M EMORY (SIMM) The SuperScript 4600N have four Single Inline Memory Module (SIMM) slots. The 4600N comes with 96MB RAM. However , you can upgrade your printer to a maximum of 128MB of RAM through the installation of additional SIMMs.
32 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide Installing SIMM 1. T urn the printer off and disconnect it. 2. Using a small phillips-head screw driver r emove the two screws fr om the expansion slot on the rear of the printer (A) , and pull out the Controller Boar d part way (B) .
33 CHAPTER 4 PRINTER DRIVERS O VERVIEW A printer driver is software that translates your computer data into a format that the printer can read and print out. Y ou can access the printer driver software to change printer and document settings and manage fonts.

51 CHAPTER 5 OPERATOR PANEL O VERVIEW The printer ’s Operator Panel allows you to read printer messages and change printer settings directly at the printer . The Operator Panel on the SuperScript 4600N consists of eight buttons and six indicator lights.
52 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide The Message Displa y The Operator Panel status display is an LCD panel that shows status messages, alert messages, media types, and menu selections. When the printer is performing a job, the display indicates a printer status message, such as PROCESSING , PRINTING , etc.
Operator Panel Features 53 OPERATOR PANEL Operat or P anel But tons Operator Panel buttons have differ ent functions depending on whether the printer is online, offline, or in menu mode. The table below summarizes Operator Panel buttons. The Operator Panel menu tree and pr ocedures for changing printer settings are discussed beginning on page 54.

(However , in most cases, you will use your printer drivers to change printer settings.
Using the Menu Tree 55 OPERATOR PANEL An Example of Using the Menu T ree The Operator Panel menu tree has eight top-level menu categories. Each category contains items you can select, and some of these items contain even more options.
56 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide Operat or P anel Menus The Operator Panel has the eight main menus, described below . Default selections for each setting are marked with an asterisk (*). Control Menu Use this menu to cancel the current print job or r eset the printer when the printer is in an error state.
Using the Menu Tree 57 OPERATOR PANEL default font selected by the ID number . Communications Menu This menu has settings that enable the printer to receive print jobs from the Parallel port or NIC, and to configur e emulations and networking protocols.

61 CHAPTER 6 ADVANCED FEATURES O VERVIEW This chapter provides information on the new advanced features of the SuperScript 4600N. If your printer has an IP address and you ar e connected to the Internet, you can access most of these features fr om the printer ’s home page.
62 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide S POOLING O PTIONS On printer networks, multiple users can send documents to the same printer . These documents are sent to a spooler in the printer where they wait in a queue (line). Special spooler features found in the SuperScript 4600N gr eatly improve print performance and usability .
Spooling Options 63 ADVANCED FEATURES Banner P ages Banner pages are used to identify and separate print jobs. These are especially useful with a shar ed printer . Items found on the Banner page include job number , job name, owner , job creator , job size, number of copies, job hold, and job reprint information.
64 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide Job Hold The Job Hold feature gives you the ability to send a document to the printer and hold it there until you “r elease” it at the Operator Panel.
Spooling Options 65 ADVANCED FEATURES Job Pr eview The Job Preview featur e allows you to pr eview a first copy of a long document before printing out multiple copies. This gives you the opportunity to proofr ead the document first, then print the requir ed number of copies later .
66 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide E XTERNAL Z IP D RIVE F EATURE An SCSI Iomega Zip ® 100MB or Zip ® 250MB drive can be connected to the SCSI port of the SuperScript 4600N. The drive must be connected and the Zip cartridge must contain files when the printer is turned on.

Be sure to r eview the maintenance and service schedules on page 72, which show when parts should be cleaned or replaced. Y our Operator Panel will also remind you when replacement of parts or consumables is due.

Replacing the Toner Modules 73 MAINTAINING YOUR PRINTER R EPLACING THE T ONER M ODULES Replace each T oner Module when you start seeing print quality problems such as light images or white str eaks acr oss the page. The Operator Panel will display the TONER EMPTY message when the toner level is getting low .

76 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide C LEANING THE B ELT C ARTRIDGE The Belt Cartridge is sensitive to bright light and touch. Always wrap it in a soft dark cloth until you are r eady to clean or install it. Use a clean soft cloth to clean the parts.

Flip up the Lock Levers to release the Belt Cartridge (C) . 4. Pull the old Belt Cartridge straight up and discard it (D) .

Replacing the Ozone Filter 81 MAINTAINING YOUR PRINTER R EPLACING THE O ZONE F ILTER Order Number 1261 64 The Ozone Filter needs to be replaced about every 12 months. 1. Slide open the Filter Cover located in back of the printer . 2. T ake the used Ozone Filter from inside the Filter Cover and discard it.
82 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide C LEANING THE O UTSIDE OF THE P RINTER Use a clean cotton cloth and mild cleaner to clean the outside of the printer . note: Do not use strong solvents or abrasive cleansers on plastic parts of the printer . Preventing Paper Jams 85 TROUBLESHOOTING P REVENTING P APER J AMS This section explains how to prevent and r emove paper jams. There ar e several things you can do to prevent paper jams. • Make sure the paper in not folded, wrinkled, or curled. • Do not overfill the paper trays.
86 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide R EMOVING P APER J AMS • T o avoid damage to rollers, always r emove jammed paper gently . • T ry to remove jammed paper without tearing it. Any pieces of media left in the printer , whether large or small, can obstruct the paper path and cause further jams.
Removing Paper Jams 87 TROUBLESHOOTING Inner Jams Inner jams happen in the transfer Drum/T ransfer Unit area. This type of jam means that the media did not make it to the paper exit area. 1. Open the Back Cover . 2. If most of the page is showing, gently pull it toward you.
88 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide Outer J ams Outer jams occur in the fuser area. Jams of this type usually means that paper is stuck in the Fuser Roller/Output Area. Follow these steps to clear these kinds of jams. 1. T urn off the printer and open the T op Cover .
Print Quality 89 TROUBLESHOOTING P RINT Q UALITY This section discusses potential print quality problems, what causes them, and how to resolve them. Back gr ound is Smear ed T oner can spread wher e it does not belong when there is too little toner or when the Belt Cartridge is worn out.
90 SuperScript 4600N — User ’ s Guide Black Line A fine black line appearing in the printed image may indicate that the Belt Cartridge surface is damaged or that there is debris stuck in the Belt Cartridge area. Solutions • Clean or replace the Belt Cartridge if it is damaged or has reached the end of its expected life.
