DRAFT 9 VLAN Management This chapter describes the IntraSwitc h 6216M and 6224’ VLAN options and e xplains how to configure the unit using those options.
VLAN Management Page 9-2 ❏ Setting the Port VLAN ID ❏ T oggle VLAN T agging ❏ Map a Port to Multiple VLAN Groups ❏ Adding VLANs to a T agged Port ❏ Removing VLANs from a T agged Port ❏ Ret.
Overview Page 9-3 VLAN Management Overview Y our IntraSwitch supports use of a Virtual LAN on all por ts. A Virtual LAN , or VLAN , is a logically separated segment of y our LAN . A VLAN segment is dif f erent from a standard ethernet seg- ment; it contains a limited number of devices, whose traffic is isolated from that of the rest of the LAN .
VLAN Management Page 9-4 The subsections follo wing the Abbr eviations list below describe these featur es and how each is configured. Abbreviations The follo wing abbreviations are used throughout this c hapter . MGMT: Management. PVID: A tagged port’ s VLAN ID .
Overview Page 9-5 normal por t can belong to only one VLAN at a time. When a normal por t belongs to a particular VLAN, all frames received at the port are classified to the VLAN of the por t.
VLAN Management Page 9-6 Management VLANs The IntraSwitch system supports access security for s witch management. By default, switc h management is not affected by its VLAN configuration, meaning the switc h can be accessed in any of the VLANs.
VLAN Configuration Page 9-7 VLAN Management Interface Options The IntraSwitc h VLAN configuration can be achiev ed through either Console/T elnet operation or SNMP operation. W eb based management will be available soon. The follo wing section describes VLAN configuration by means of Console/T elnet interface.
VLAN Management Page 9-8 Accessing Configuration Menus The console/telnet interface pro vides user fr iendl y VLAN configuration menus. T o access these menus from the Main Menu of Local Management Interf ace, type c and enter your passw ord at the prompt.
VLAN Configuration Page 9-9 Figure 9-1 VLAN Configuration Screen Current Settings At the top of the Configuration Screen, the cur r ent settings are display ed.
VLAN Management Page 9-10 T able 9-2 VLAN Group Current Settings Using the Configuration Menu Options The follo wing subsections descr ibe how to use the options of the configuration menu to navigate to the desired g roup, set the VID , set VLAN Name, add VLAN members, configure the management VLAN , and display VLAN information.
VLAN Configuration Page 9-11 Setting VLAN ID T o assign a VLAN ID number for a VLAN Group, press i in the VLAN configuration Menu. Selecting i for the Def ault VLAN Group, displays a warning message: Cannot change VID of default VLAN, press any key to continue.
VLAN Management Page 9-12 When the port in volv ed is a T agged port, the port's original VLAN Group membership is not re voked. Configuring Man- agement VLAN T ake the following steps to configure a manag ement VLAN. 1 T ype g on the VLAN configuration Menu.
VLAN Port Attribute Configuration Page 9-13 ∆ Note: The Port VID field on the "system Port VLAN Map" screen represents the port's VID when untagged. When tagged, the port’ s VID has no significance and is displayed as "----".
VLAN Management Page 9-14 Current Settings At the top of the Configuration Screen, the cur r ent settings are display ed. Descriptions of these settings are shown in T able 9-3.
VLAN Port Attribute Configuration Page 9-15 Setting the Port VLAN ID Y ou can assign a por t VID of any value in the rang e of 1 - 4094. When the port VID is equal to the VID of one of the VLAN Groups in the system, the por t becomes a member of that VLAN Group.
VLAN Management Page 9-16 1 Make the correct cable connection between the two s witches. 2 Create matching VLANs on the two switc hes. Use the a option, the i option, and the m option in the VLAN Configuration Menu to assign names, ID numbers, and member por ts to the VLANs.
VLAN Port Attribute Configuration Page 9-17 Enter Port VID (1 - 4095) > Enter the VID of the VLAN to which this port is associated and press return .
VLAN Management Page 9-18 If tagging for the port is disabled, then the f ollowing warning message appears on the screen: Normal port can't belong to more than one VLAN. Enable Tagging first, press any key to continue… See the "T oggle VLAN T a gging" section abov e for details on enabling tagging for a port.
VLAN Port Attribute Configuration Page 9-19 ∆ Note: The option r is allowed only for tagged ports since, for a normal port, the VLAN cannot be remov ed. The port has to be a member of at least one VLAN in the system. Similarly , when a tagged port is a member of only one VLAN, the VLAN cannot be remov ed.
VLAN Management Page 9-20 Example of System With T agging The two-s witch system shown in F igure 9-3 demonstrates the use of tagging to create some VLAN groups that can communicate with one another , and other groups that cannot communicate.
