Print Job A command or commands sent from the host to the pr inter that results in on e or more labe ls being pri nted. Sleep Mode Operat ion mode in w hich the pr inter cons erves en ergy whil e retaining the print job. Supplies The medi a (paper or synthetic) t he printer prints on.

Chapter 1. Gett ing Start ed The 94 50 RASCAL ® printer is a portable, thermal-direct printer . This chapter tell s you how F to use the buttons on top of th e printer . F to cha rge and use th e battery . F sleep mo de works. F to attach the b elt.
Using the Buttons –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– On the top of the printer , there are two button s and an LED indic ator , as show n. [F eed] Use to F feed or ad vance the s upply for pri nting.
[On /Off ] Use to F turn the pri nter on and off . F wake the pr inter from sleep m o de. See "About S leep Mode," later in th is chapter . F reset the pri n ter to norm al operation mode after p rinting a test label. Se e Chapter 6, "T roubleshoo ting," for information.
If the battery l o ses powe r in the middle of a printing session , replace or re charge the ba ttery . The printe r remembers the prin t job. When you use or store yo ur charger , do no t : F wrap the cord aroun d the charger . F pull or p ut unusua l stress on t he cord.
4. When chargi ng is complete, unplug the ch arger from the battery . 5. Load the battery , as di scribed in "Loadin g the B attery ." 6. Press [On/Off] to resume printing.
2. Squeeze the side tabs on the battery and p ull the battery away from th e printer . Lo adin g the Battery T o load the ba ttery: 1. Insert the bottom tabs on the battery i nto the slots at the bottom of th e battery well. 2. Push the to p of the battery onto the prongs until the battery snaps in to place.
A ttaching the Belt ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Y our printer co mes with a belt for po rtable printing. T o attach the belt: 1. Lift one o f the clips and slip th e belt under it.

Chapter 2. Loading Supplies The pri nter accepts l abels, tag s, and th ermal paper . Labels can be i ndexed or non-indexe d. They also ca n have a co re or be coreless.
L oading for P e el Mode––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– In P eel mode, use die-cut labels onl y . Use supplies up to a maxim um of 2.05 inches. Conta ct Monarc h at the numb er at the bac k of this manua l if you have sp ecial labe l requirements .
3. Squeez e the tabs on both sides of the support fr ame and pull it o pen. 4. Insert the lead ing edge of the suppl y into the supply gui d e while d ropping the sup ply roll into the supply well . Push the supply against the back of the well. Use your finger to push t he supply thro ugh the su pply chute .
5. Place t he supply h older against th e supply ro ll in t he supply well . Make sure the supply turns fre e ly in the well. 6. F eed the supp ly through the printer , as follows. F Push the printhead l ever down to close the printhead. If the printer is off , turn the knob clockw ise to manually feed the supply t hrough th e supply ch ute.
9. Snap the support frame back i n to pl ace. Gently pu ll on the backing paper to ma ke sure it is tight. Support F rame Supply Chut e Label Backing Pa pe r Chapter 2.
L oad ing for Non-P eel Mod e –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– In non-peel mode, supplies can be either die-cu t or butt cut with a maximum size o f 2.2 inche s. n If you hav e special la bel requirem ents, contact M onarch at the number l isted in t he back o f the ha ndbook.
4. Drop the new supply roll into the supply well un til it rests on the ba ck wall. 5. With thum b and forefinger , insert the lea d ing edge of the supply in to the supply guide un til the printer begi ns to feed the supply . Make sure the supp ly roll is flush agai nst the back wall when y ou begin to in sert the lea d ing edge.
R emoving Supplies ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– T o re move suppli es: 1. Remov e the supply holder as s hown. 2. Cut or tear the su pplies as clos e to the supply guid e as poss ible, and re move the su pply roll.
Chapter 3. Printe r Communications System Ad ministrators Only . Before the printer can re ceive a print jo b from the host, you must: 1. Set the com munications pa rameters.
3. Press [Feed] once. The LED indica tor blinks once. Press [F eed] ... T o set the baud rat e to ... 7. Remove the b a ttery . Press [On/Off] while yo u re-conne ct the battery to retu rn to normal print op erations. Connec ting the Communication s Cable –––––––––––––––––––––––– T o attach the c ommunic ations ca ble: 1.
R emoving the Commun ications Cable ––––––––––––––––––––––––– T o re move th e cable: 1. Hold the printer stea dy with on e hand. 2. Grasp th e cable h o lde r with your o ther hand an d push it in to unlock the latch.
Chapter 4. Print ing This chapter d e scribes ho w to F print in On-d emand mode. F remo ve backi ng paper . F print in Continuous mo de. F clear a print job from the printe r’s memory . F pause t he printer wh ile it pri nts. n See yo ur System Adminis trator for a pri nt job.
R emoving Backing P aper –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– T o re move excess backing paper: 1. T ear the back ing paper a few inches away from the support frame. n Do Not tear it agai nst the supp ort frame .
Chapter 5. Care an d Maintenan ce This c hapter expl ains how to: F clear jams. F clea n the printhe a d. F clean t he peel blade and plate n roller . Clearing Jams –––––––––––.
2. If your pr inter has a re movable supply guid e, grab the printer firm ly with one hand. W ith the other hand, slide out t he supply g uide as sh own. n Do Not pu ll the supply guide completel y out of the prin ter . 3. Use your fi ngers (no sh arp object s) to remove a ny jammed labels from the su pply guide an d supply c hute.
Inserting t he Supply Guide If the supply guide does com e out of the printer: 1. Tilt t he suppl y guide in a downwa rd slant , and inse rt the catch into the to p of the track. 2. Tilt the su pply guide so it li nes up with the track, an d then gent ly slide it along th e track, and into the print er .
Cleaning the Printhead –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Clean th e printhead daily when using the pri nter in exce ssively dirty , hot, or h umid envir onments. Al so clean i t after ever y five rolls of supplies, or when you see voi ds in the p rint as sh own.
Cleaning the Platen R oller and P eel Blade –––––––––––––––––––––– T o clean the platen ro ller and pe el blad e: 1. T urn the printer off . 2. Remov e the supplies , if you haven ’t already . See "Removing Supplies" in Chapter 2 fo r more information.
5. Rub the cotton sw ab back and f orth across th e platen roller a nd peel bl ade to remove any buildu p. 6. Let the pri n ter dry br iefly . Then, reload your supplies.
Chapter 6. Trou bleshoot ing This c hapter expl ains how to F print a te st label. F read the LE D indicator . F clear errors. F solve any pr oblems that may occur .
If the LED i n dica tor does not come on whe n you p rint a test label, p ress [On/O ff] and [Feed] at the same time and reattach the ba ttery . Release [On/O ff] and wait for th e LED indicato r to turn amber before releasi ng [Fee d] . The test label prints automatica lly .
Pr oblems and Solutions –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Some common printer pro blems and thei r solutions are listed below . Problem Solut ion Battery won’t charge. Make sure the battery is connected correc tly .
Problem Solu tion Print has voids or is too light. Make sure the supplies are loaded correctly . Check the supplies for damage or defects. Reload supplies if nec essary . Check the peel roller for jammed supplies. Check the supply ty pe (i.e., indexed or non-indexed).
Problem Solu tion Printer does not print. Charge the battery . Make sure the print job was correct. Make sure the supplies are loaded correctly . Make sure the printhead is closed. Printer does not start. Mak e sure the battery is charged and plugged into the printer .
