1. In trodu ction The 9401 ® (5- key key pad) and 9402 ® (2 1-key keyp ad) pr inters are a vail able wi th a number of options : • format s 54-69 (94 02 only) • format s 70-85 (94 02 only) • m.

2. In sta lling t he Printer 1. Pl ace the prin ter on a l evel surface . CAUTION The power s witch must be Off while you co nnect any cable s to the pri nt er . 2. If yo u ar e goi ng to u se the printer on- line, c onn ect the RS -232 (o n-line) cable a s s hown.
NOTE: The key boa rd cable is mark ed with the word "TOP " t o he lp you conn ect it to th e pri nter . 4. Con nect the p ower cord to t he so c ket as s hown. Plu g the other en d of the cord int o a grounded 1 10V AC elec tr ica l ou tlet.

On th e Compute r Keybo ard Y ou can att ach an optio nal co m put er keyb oard to the 9401 or 9402 pri nt ers. The comput er keyboard looks somethi ng lik e thi s: Som e of the func t ion keys on a comp ute r key bo ard corr espond to t he fu nction keys on t he print er k eypad.

14. Loop the backing paper back thro ugh th e plate n u nit as shown . 15. Remo ve the wire cli p from the ba ck i ng paper take -up reel . 16. 5. Lo adi ng the Ribbo n 1. Open th e cover by lifting the handle and pu lling it com pl e tely arou nd the top of th e p rint er. 2. Mov e th e print head lever as show n to ope n the prin the ad. 3. Rewi nd t he s upplie s back onto the roll. If backi ng pa per is rew ound on the take- up reel, tear it as des cribed in "Loadi ng S uppli es.
4. Remove the o ld ribbon by pulling the wire clips a s shown. 5. Remo ve t he ribbo n cor es f rom the wire cli ps a nd dis c ard them . 6. Pl ac e the w ire cli ps ba ck on the ribbon ta ke -up reel and del ivery re el. 7. Remo ve the new ribbo n from th e p ac kage.
9. Gui de th e ri bbon do wn b etween the pri nthead and t he front of the pr inte r and around the rollers as shown. 10. Pl ac e the ta ke-up c ore (empty cor e) on the rib bon ta ke-up reel. 11. Gent ly slide the ribbon cores onto the ree l s while guid ing the ribbo n aroun d the prin thead.

6. Cleaning the Printhead and Platen Roller WARNING Turn the power Off and unplug the cord before cleaning. 1. Open th e cover by lifting the handle and pu lling it com pl e tely arou nd the top of th e p rint er. 2. Mov e th e print head lever as show n to ope n the prin the ad.

Problem Corrective Action The display is blank after you turn On the printer. Turn the printer Off and make sure the power cord is properly plugged into the printer and a grounded 110VAC r eceptacle.
Problem Corrective Action Printing is compressed or distorted. Clean the printhead and platen roller. Printing has shadows or smears. Clean the printhead. Lower the print contrast. Change supplies to thermal direct or thermal transfer. Reload the ribbon correctly.
Problem Corrective Action "Check Ribbon" message appears. Check to see if there is no ribbon or the printer is at the end of the ribbon. In either c ase, replace the ribbon. The ribbon i s jammed. Check the ribbon path and reload the ribbon, if necessary.
