14 Catalyt ic Converter Your Merced es-Benz is equipped with monolithic type catal ytic converters, an important element in conj unction with the O2 sensor to achieve substantial control of the pollutants in t he exhaust emissions.
15 Starting a nd Turning Off t he Engine Before Sta rting Engage parking brake and ens ure selector lever is in position " P" or " N". Turn key in steeri ng lock to position 2. The charge indicator la mp should come on. Cold Engine Do not d epress acce lerator.
16 Driving Instructions Power Assistance Warning! When the engine is not running , the brake and steering sy stems are without pow er assistance. Under these circumstances, a much great er effort is necessary to stop or steer the vehicle.
17 If the parking brake is released and the brake w a rning la mp in the inst rument cluster stays on, the b rake fluid level in the reservoir is too low. Brake pad wear or a leak in the syste m may be the reason for lo w brake fluid in the reservoir.
18 Aquaplaning Depending on t he depth o f the water layer on the roa d, aquaplani ng may occur, even a t lo w speeds and with ne w tires. Reduce vehicle speed , avoid track grooves in the r oad and a pply brakes cautiously in t he rain. Tire Traction The safe speed on a wet, snow co vered or icy road is always lo wer than on a dry road .
19 Winter Driving Instruct ions The most important r ule for slippery or icy roads is to d rive sensibly and to avoid abrupt acceleration, b raking and steering maneuvers. D o not use the cruise control system under such conditions. When the vehicle is in danger of skidding, move selector lever to position "N".

24 The temperature selected with the temperature selector is r eache d as quickly as possible. The temperature selector sho uld be left at the desired temperature setti ng. With the center air outlets ope n and the system in heating mode, switch the outlets to non-heated/ cooled air by pressing the bl ue button (indic ator la mp lights up).
25 6 Residual Engine Hea t Utilization With the engine switched o ff, it is possible to continue heatin g the interior for a short while. The rear passenger compartment air o utlet must be closed. Air volume and d istribution ar e controlled automaticall y.
26 8 Air Volu me Selector The air volume is automatically regulated in AUTO = Normal setting and all intermediate po sitions, except when selectin g MIN = minimum air flo w, MAX = maximum air flo w. 9 Economy The function of t his setti ng correspo nds to the automatic mode.

28 Car Keys Included with your vehicle are : • 2 Master ke ys with infrared remote control, • 1 Master key, • 1 Valet key, • 1 Flat key. Infrared Re mote Control w ith Foldering Ma ster Key The master ke y fits all locks on the car.

32 Central Loc king System The entire vehicle may be locked o r unlocked by eith er usi ng the master key in the door or trunk locks, or central locking switch locate d in d river's door . The central locking system al so lo cks or unlocks the fuel filler flap.
33 The door s can only be loc ked with the central lockin g switch, i f the fro nt doors ar e closed. The doors cannot be unlocked with the central lockin g switch, i f car was previously locked from o utside. When opening a front doo r, the entire car is unlocked, if it was previ ously locked w ith the ce ntral locking s witch.

45 Seat Belt s and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Your vehicle is equipp ed with seat belts for all seats, e mergency tensioning retracto rs for the front seats, as well as airbags a nd knee bolsters for driver and front passen ger. Seat Belts Important! Laws in most states a nd all Canadian provinces require seat b elt use.
46 Seat Belt Extender When the respective door is closed and the key is in steeri ng lock p osition 1 or 2, the seat belt extender brings the belt forward withi n easy reach o f the occupant. The seat belt extender also brings the belt forward, if the seat i s not occupied.
47 1 Latch plate 2 Buckle 3 Release button Fastening of Seat B elts Push latch plate (1) into b uckle (2) until it clicks. The lap belt should be positioned as low as possible on your hips and n ot across the abdomen. Tighten the lap portion to a snug fit by pulling shoulder portio n up.

50 Airbags The most effective occ upant restraint system yet develop ed for use in production vehicles is t he seat b elt. In some cases, however, the pr otective effect of a seat belt can be furt her enhanced by an airb ag. The dr iver airbag (1) is located in the steering wheel hub.
51 The follo wing system co mponents are monitored or undergo a self-check: crash-sensor, air bag ignition cir cuits, driver and passenger seat belt buckles.
52 Important! The "SRS" is designed to r educe the potential of injury in certa in frontal and front-a ngled impacts which may cause injuries, howeve r, no system available to day can totally eliminate injuries and fata lities. The activatio n of the "SRS" temporarily relea ses a sm a ll amount of dust from the air-bags.
53 Safety Guidelines for t he Seat Belt, Emergency Tensioning Ret ractor and Airbag Warning! • Damaged belts or belts that w ere highly stressed in an a ccident m ust be replaced and their a nchoring points must also be chec ked. Use only belts installed or supplied by an authorized M ercedes-B enz dealer.
54 Infant and Child Re straint Sy stems We reco mmend that all infants and children be restrained at all ti mes while the vehicle is in motion. Important! The use of infant or child restra ints is required by law in all 50 states and all Canadian pro vinces.
55 Steering Lock 0 The key can be withdra wn in this position only. T he steering is locked with the key re moved fro m the steering lock. T he key can b e removed only with the selector lever in position "P" . After re moving the key or with the key in steering lock position 0, the selector lever is locked in po sition "P".

72 Drinking and Driv ing Warning! Drinking and driving can be a very dangerous co mbination. Eve n a small amount of alcohol or drugs can aff ect your reflexes, perc eptions and judgement. The possibility of a serious or even fatal accident is sharply increa sed when you drink an d drive.
73 Automatic Trans mission The automatic transmissio n selects individual gears auto matically, dependent upon • Selector lever position • Accelerator position • Vehicle speed Important! When pa.
74 Selector Lever Po sitions The auto matic gear shifting p r o c es s c an b e a d a p t e d t o specific operatin g conditions using the selector lever. P Parking lock. The pa rking lock is an additio nal safeguard to the parking brake when parking the veh icle.

76 Rear Fender Indicators When the reverse gear is selec ted, the rear fender indicators will extend upward from the rear corners of the fenders. The rear fender indicators retra ct delayed when shifting out o f reverse. They retract i mmediately whe n turning key in steerin g lock to po sition 0.

78 Charge Indicator La mp Should the charge indicator la mp fail to come on prio r to star ting when the ke y is in steering lo ck position 2 or should it fail to go out after startin g or come while the engine is running, th is indicates a fault which must b e repaired at an authorized Mercedes-Benz d ealer immediately.
79 Low Engine Oil Level Wa rning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the oil level warning la mp comes on and should go out when the engine is running. If the warning la mp co mes on with the engine running a nd at op erating temperature, the en gine oil level has dropped to approximately the minimum mark on the dip stick.
80 Fuel Reserve Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the fuel r eserve warning la mps co me on and should go out when the engine is running. If the warning lamps do not go out after starting the engine or if they come on while driving, it i ndicates that the fuel level is do wn to the reserve quantity of approx.
81 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out when the engine is running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting t he engine, o r if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
82 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination o f this lamp i ndicates an exterior lamp failure.
83 Brake Warning Lamp The brake warning lamp will co me on with the key i n steering loc k position 2 and should go out when the engine is running. The brake warning lamp will co me on: • when there is i nsufficient br ake fluid in the re servoir (engine running and p arking brake released) • when the parki ng brake is set (engine running).
84 Antilock B rake Syste m (AB S) The ABS prevent s the wheels fro m locking up above a vehicle speed of approximately 2 mph (3 km/h) independent o f road surface conditions. It is necessar y, however, that the vehicle speed r eaches at least 5 mph (8 km/h) be fore commencing t o bra ke.
85 Acceleration Slip Co ntrol (ASR) The accelera tion slip control will engage at all vehicle speeds, if o ne or both dr ive wheels begin to lo se tractio n and spin.
86 Snow chain s witch Driving w ith Snow Chains When driving with sno w chains, press the upper half of t he snow chain switch, located on the instrum ent panel (the i ndicator la mp in the switch co mes on). This mode is effecti ve at speed s up to 25 mph (40 km/h).
87 Adaptive Damping Syste m (ADS) Depending upon r oad surface conditions, load, driving style, ADS will automatically a djust the o ptimal ride firmness. The indicator lamp comes on with the key in steerin g lock position 2 and goes out when the engine is running.
88 Emission Control Certain systems of the engine serve to keep the toxic components of the exhaust gases within per missible limits required by law. These s ystems, of course, will functio n proper ly only whe n m ai ntained strictly according to factory sp ecificatio ns.

92 Hood To op en: To unlock the hoo d, pull r elease lever (1) under the driver's side of the instrument panel. At the same time handle (2) will extend out of the radiator grill (it may be neces sary to lift the hood up slightly).
93 Coolant reservoir of S 600 shown Checking Coolant Level To check the coo lant level, t he vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped . Check coolant le vel only when coolant is cold. The co olant should reach t he marking inside the filler neck.

99 On new vehicles r etightening i s carried out during the 1st inspec tion. Retightening is also necessar y whenever wheels are fitted, e.g. when t he spare wheel is used for the first ti me or when a set of wheels with M + S tires is installed. Tightening torq ue: 110 ft.
100 W ar ni ng ! The jack is designed exclusi vely for jacking up the vehicle at the jack tubes built in to eith er side of th e vehicle. Us e the jack only to lif t the vehicle du ring a wheel change. Never get beneath th e v ehicle whil e it is supported by the j ack.

102 11 Clean contact surfaces of wheel and wheel hub. I nstall spare wheel on wheel h ub. Insert wheel bo lts and tighten them slightly. To avoid paint damage, place wheel flat against hub and hold it there while in stalling first wheel bolt. Unscrew the alignme nt bolt to install the last wheel bo lt.
103 Tire Inflation Press ure A table (see fuel filler flap) lists the tire inflation pressures specified for summer and winter tires as well a s for the varying ope rating conditio ns. Important! Tire pressure changes by appr ox. 1 .5 psi (0.1 bar) per 18°F (10°C) of air temperature change.
104 Battery The maintenance-free ba ttery is located in the trunk under the right-hand wheel well cover panel. The service life of the battery is dependent on its c ondition of charge. The battery should a lways be kept sufficiently c harged, in order to last an optimum length o f time.
