15 Starting and Turning off the Engine Before Sta rting Important! The engine can only be started , if the vehicle was unlocked from the outside. Before Starting Engage parking brake and ens ure selector lever is in position " P" or " N".

18 Tire Traction The safe speed on a wet, snow co vered or icy road is always lo wer than on a dry road . You sho uld pa y particular attention to the condition of the ro ad as soon as the prevailing tempera tures fall cl ose to the freezing point. Warning! If ice has for med on the road, tire traction w ill be substantially reduced.

22 Automatic Cli mate Control The system is alwa ys at oper ational readiness, except when manually switched off. The automatic climate control only operates with the engine running The temperature selector sho uld be left at the desired temperature setti ng.

24 Basic Setting - Aut omatic Mode Press left and right for automatic mode. Simultaneously p ress both and for temperature setting of 72° F. Air volume and d istribution ar e controlled automaticall y. This setting ca n be used all year around. Economy The function of t his setting c orresponds to the automatic mode.
25 Air Distribution Press button repeated ly until the requested sy mbol is displa yed. Air Volume Press - or + side o f rocker s witch until the requested blo wer speed is attained. A choice of 7 blower speeds is available. To switch the automatic clima te control off, press - side of rocker switch until symbol OFF is displa yed.
26 Activated Cha rcoal Filte r To select, p ress button. To cancel, p ress button again. An activated c harcoal filter markedly reduces bad odors and remove s pollutants fro m the air enter ing the passenger compart ment. The blo wer speed is slightl y increased to supply a constant volume o f air.
27 Rear Passenger Co mpartment Adjustable Air Outlet Vehicles without rear passenger compartment climate co ntrol. Slide switch (1 ) up to open outlet for fresh/cooled air onl y.
28 Car Keys Included with your vehicle are • Master keys with infrared remote control • 1 Master key • 1 Valet key • 1 Flat key Infrared Re mote Control w ith Folding Master K ey The master ke y fits all locks on the car. To release the key, press b utton (1).
29 Infrared Remote Control Starter Lock-Out Importa nt! Locking the vehicle activates t he starter lock-out. The engine can only be started , if the vehicle was unlocked from the outside. Note: If transmit b utton of the r emote co ntrol is inadvertently pressed again prio r to starting the engine, the s tart lock-out is activated.
30 Locking and Unloc king Aim transmitter e ye at re ceiver o n inside rear view mirror a nd press transmit button. Distance to receiver max. 20 ft (6 m). The red o r green indicator lamp on the receiver should b link. It stops b linking when the vehicle is properly l ocked or unlocked.

32 When you lock t he car, a ll door lock buttons sho uld m ove down. If any o ne stays up, the respective doo r is not proper ly closed. You should the n unlock the ca r, o pen and reclose this door, and lo ck the car again.
33 Important! Separatel y locking the trunk with a key will activate the starter lock out, even if a front door is left aj ar. To be able to start the engine, first close t he doo r.

35 1 Indicat o r lam p in swit ch locat ed in ce nte r co nso le Anti-Theft A larm Syste m The anti- theft alarm is automatically armed or disarmed with any o f your vehicle's keys or infrared remo te control by loc king or unlock ing either front door or the trunk.
36 P o w e r S e a t s , F r o nt Warning! Do not adjust the driver's seat while driving. Adjusting the seat w hile driving could cause the driv er to lose control o f the vehicle. Never ride in a moving vehic le with the seat back reclined. Sitting in an excessively reclined po sition can be dangerous.

38 Important! Bring seat backrest to upr ight position before recalling a stored seat/ head restraint/steering wheel/e xterior and inside rear view mirror p osition, otherwise the front seats could get forced against a rear seat and be damaged.

46 Seat Belt s and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Your vehicle is equipp ed with seat belts for all seats, e mergency tensioning retracto rs for the front seats, as well as airbags a nd knee bolsters for driver and front passen ger. Seat Belts Important! Laws in most states a nd all Canadian provinces require seat b elt use.
47 1 Latch plate 2 Buckle 3 Release button Fastening of Seat B elts Push latch plate (1) into b uckle (2) until it clicks. The lap belt should be positioned as low as possible on your hips a nd not across the abdo men. Three-point seat belt: Tighten the lap portion to a snug fit by pulling s houlder p ortion up.
48 Warning! USE SEAT B ELTS PROPERLY. • Each occupant should w ear their seat belt at all times, because seat belts help reduce the likeliho od of and potential sev erity of injuries in accidents, includi ng rollovers.

50 Emergency Tensioning Retracto r (ETR) The seat belts for the front seats are equipped with emergency tens ioning retractors. T hese tensioning re tractor s are located in each belt's inerti a reel and become ope rationally read y with the key in steeri ng lock p osition 1 or 2.

The "SRS" is designed to r educe the potential of injury in certa in frontal and front-a ngled impacts which may cause injuries; howev er, no syste m available t oday can totally eliminate injuries and fata lities. The activatio n of the "SRS" temporarily relea ses a sm a ll amount of dust from the air-bags.

62 Interior Lighting 1 Interior La mps (Door contact) A B A Interior la mps are switched on, and off delayed, when unlocking or locking the ve hicle, or when opening or closi ng either fro nt door. Ho wever, there will be no delay when the key is in steeri ng lock position 2.

67 Warning! When closing the w indows, be sure that there is no danger o f anyone being harmed by the closing procedure. In case of obstruction, t he automatic reversal w ill not operate if a window is being closed by pressing the switch to its resistance point and holding it there, or when using a key or the remote control.

Display Illumination Press adjusting knob to briefly illuminate the displa y (with key removed or in steering lock po sition 0 or 1). 70 Antenna The antenna extends when s witching on the telepho ne. Note: To retract the antenna (e.g. when entering a car wash) the telepho ne must be switched of f. Cellular Telephone The vehicle is prepared for the installation o f a cellular telep hone.

77 engine temperature. This allows the catalytic converter to heat up more quickly to op erating temperat ures. During the brief warm-up period this delayed upshift and increased engine noise might be pe rceived as a malfunction. Ho wever, neither the engine nor transmission are ne gatively affected by this m o de of operatio n.
78 Program Mo de Selector S witch The trans mission is provided with a selector switch for Standard "S" and Winter (snow and ice) "W" progra m modes. Warning! Always be cert ain of the program mode selected since the vehi cle driving chara cteristics chang e with the selection of the pro gram mode.
79 Cruise Control Any given spee d above approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) can be maintained with the cruise control b y operating th e lever. 1 Accelerate an d set: Lift lever briefly t o set speed. Hold lever up to accelerate. 2 Dec elerat e and set: Depress leve r briefly to set sp ee d.
80 Note: If the engine does not brake the vehicle sufficiently while driving on a downgrade, the sp eed you set on the cruise control may be exceed ed and you may have to step on the bra ke pedal to slow down.
81 Engine Oil Pressure Gauge The oil pressure at idle speed may drop if the engine is at operating temperature. T his will not jeopard ize the engine's oper ational reliabi lity.
82 Outside Temperature In dicato r The temperature sensor is loca ted in the front bumper ar ea. Due to its l ocation, the sensor can be affected b y road or engine heat duri ng idling o r slow driving.
83 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out with the engine running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting t he engine, o r if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
84 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination o f this lamp i ndicates an exterior lamp failure.

86 Anti lock Bra ke Syste m ( AB S) The ABS i mproves steering c ontrol of the vehicle during braking ma neuvers. For maximum benefit, do not pump the brake pedal, r ather use firm, steady brake pedal p ressure.
87 Electronic Tractio n System (ETS) The ETS improves vehicle tra ction, especially under slipper y road conditions. It enga ges at vehicle spe eds up to approximately 24 mph (40 km/h), and applies the brakes to the sp inning drive wheel. At approximatel y 50 mph (80 km/h), the ET S switches o ff.
88 Acceleration Slip Co ntrol (ASR) The accele ration slip contro l will engage at all vehicle speeds, if o ne or both drive wheels begin to los e traction and spin.
89 ASR c o ntr o l switc h lo ca te d in c e n t e r c o n so l e ASR Control Sw itch To improve the vehicle's tracti on when driving with sno w chains, or s tarting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, press the upper hal f of the ASR switch. T he ASR warning la mp, located in the speedometer dial, is co ntinuousl y illuminated.
90 Electronic Stability Pr ogram (ESP) The ESP enhances directional co ntrol and improves tractio n of t he vehicle under any drivi ng condition. Over/understeeri ng of the vehicle is counteracted by appl ying brakes to the left or right side wheels. T he ESP warning lamp, located in the speedometer dial, start s to flash.
91 ESP control sw itch located in cent er co ns ol e ESP Control Sw itch To improve the vehicle's tracti on when driving with sno w chains, or s tarting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, press the upper hal f of the E SP switch. The ESP warning lamp, located in the speedometer dial, is co ntinuousl y illuminated.
92 Adaptive Da mping System (ADS) D e p e nd i n g up o n r o a d s u r f a c e conditions, load, driving style, ADS will a ut o mati ca ll y ad j ust t he op ti mal r id e fir mnes s.
93 Emission Control Certain systems of the engine serve to keep certain co mponents o f the exhaust gases within per missible li mits required by la w. These s ystems, of course, will functio n proper ly only whe n m ai ntained strictly according to factory sp ecificatio ns.
94 Traveling Abroad Abroad, there is a widely-spre ad Mercedes-Benz ser vice network at your disposal. If you plan to tr avel into area s which are not listed in the i ndex of your dealer director y, y ou should request pertinent infor mation fro m your authorized Mercede s-Benz dealer.

96 Hood To unlock the hoo d, pull r elease lever (1) under the driver's side of the instrument panel. At the same time handle (2) will extend out of the radiator grill (it may be neces sary to lift the hood up slightly). Caution! To avoid damage to the windshield wipers or hood , ope n the hood onl y with wipers in the parked position.
97 Checking Coolant Level To check the coo lant level, t he vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped . Check coolant le vel only when coolant is cold.
98 S 320 Checking Engine Oil Leve l 1 Oil dipstick 2 Oil filler cap To check the e ngine oil le vel, par k vehicle on level ground, with engine at normal operational te mperature. S 420, S 500 Check engine oil level app roximately 5 minutes after sto pping the e ngine, allowing for the o il to retur n to the oil pan.
99 Checking Automatic Tran smission Fluid Level When noticing fluid loss or gear shifting malfunctions, have your autho rized Mercedes-Benz d ealer check the transmission fluid level. Models S 420 , S 500: The transmission has a per manent fill of automatic tra nsmission fluid.
100 Spare Wheel, Lug Wrench 1 Trunk floor 2 Strap 3 Luggage bo wl 4 Lug wrench Roll back the floor mat. Lift the trunk floor (1) and engage strap (2) in the eyelet on the edge of the trunk lid . To remove the spare tire, turn luggage bowl (3) to the left and re move.
