The SRS components are in operational readiness if the 6 SRS warning lamp is not lit while the engine is running. G WARNING The SRS self-check has detected a malfunction if the 6 SRS indicator lamp: R.
the vehicle and cause head and other injuries when the window curtain air bag is deployed. R Air bag system components will be hot after an air bag has inflated. Do not touch them. R Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat.
As the air bag inflates with considerable speed and force, a proper seating position and correct positioning of the hands on the steering wheel will help to keep you at a safe distance from the air bag.
It is important for your safety and that of your passenger to have deployed air bags replaced and to have any malfunctioning air bags repaired. This will help to make sure the air bags continue to perform their protective function for the vehicle occupants in the event of a crash.
Knee bags provide increased protection for the driver and front passenger against the risk of: R knee injuries R thigh injuries R lower leg injuries Driver's knee bag : deploys underneath the steering column and front-passenger knee bag ; underneath the glove box.
The side impact air bag on the front- passenger side will not deploy under the following conditions: R the OCS detects that the front-passenger seat is not occupied.
Window curtain air bags : are deployed: R on the side on which an impact occurs R at the start of an accident with a high rate of lateral vehicle deceleration or acceleration, e.
When the OCS senses that the front- passenger seat is classified as being empty, the 45 indicator lamp will illuminate when the engine is started and remain illuminated, indicating that the front- passenger front air bag is deactivated.

PRE-SAFE ® (preventative occupant protection) G WARNING The PRE-SAFE ® system reduces the impact of an accident on vehicle occupants, as long as their seat belts have been fastened correctly. Although your vehicle is equipped with a PRE- SAFE ® system, the possibility of injury in the event of an accident cannot be ruled out.
G WARNING Seat or head restraint covers can cause a malfunction when the NECK-PRO head restraints/NECK PRO luxury head restraints are activated or when the side impact air bags or pelvis air bags are deployed, or they can prevent this completely.
X Remove resetting tool : from the vehicle document wallet. X Slide resetting tool : into guide ; between the NECK-PRO luxury head restraint and the rear cover of the head restraint. X Push resetting tool : downwards until you hear the head restraint deployment mechanism engage.
be replaced and their anchoring points must also be checked. Only use seat belts which have been approved by Mercedes-Benz. Do not make any modifications to the seat belts. This can lead to unintended activation of the ETDs or to their failure to activate when necessary.
R Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat. R When using a seat belt to secure infant restraints, toddler restraints, or children in booster seats, always follow the child seat manufacturer's instructions.
Seat belt adjustment The seat-belt adjustment function adjusts the driver's and front-passenger seat belt to the upper body of the occupants. The belt strap is tightened slightly when: R you engage the belt tongue in the belt buckle and you then turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the ignition lock.
If after six seconds the driver's or front- passenger seat belt is not fastened and the doors are closed, the 7 seat belt warning lamp will remain lit: R until the driver's or front passenge.
G WARNING Pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Devices that have been deployed must be renewed. For your safety, when disposing of Emergency Tensioning Devices, always observe the safety instructions. These are available from any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Child restraint systems or child seat securing rings that are malfunctioning or damaged as the result of a collision must be replaced. ISOFIX is a standardized securing system for specially designed child restraint systems on the rear seats.
X Slide down head restraint : until it engages ( Y page 97). Make sure that you do not interfere with the correct routing of Top Tether belt A . X Install the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system with Top Tether. Comply with the manufacturer's installation instructions when doing so.
X To activate/deactivate: press button ; . If indicator lamp : is lit, operation of the rear side windows is deactivated. Operation is only possible using the switches in the driver's door. If indicator lamp : is off, operation is possible using the switches in the rear compartment.
Important safety notes G WARNING The following factors increase the risk of accidents: R Excessive speed, especially in turns R Wet and slippery road surfaces R Following another vehicle too closely The driving safety systems described in this section cannot reduce these risks or prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle.
and significantly reduces braking effectiveness. BAS (Brake Assist System) i Observe the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 63). BAS operates in emergency braking situations. If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS automatically boosts the braking force, thus shortening the stopping distance.
G WARNING BAS PLUS cannot always clearly identify objects and complex traffic situations. BAS PLUS cannot intervene in these cases. There is a risk of an accident.
Application of the brakes by ESP ® may otherwise destroy the brake system. i Only use wheels with the recommended tire sizes. Only then will ESP ® function properly. ETS/4ETS (Electronic Traction System) i Observe the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 62).
Deactivating/activating ESP ® (AMG vehicles) Activating/deactivating SPORT handling mode G WARNING The SPORT handling mode should not be switched on during normal driving.
Deactivating/activating ESP ® G WARNING The ESP ® should not be switched off during normal driving. Disabling of the system will result in the following: R no restriction to engine torque R loss of .
When ESP ® is deactivated or not operational, vehicle stability in standard driving maneuvers is reduced. Adapt your speed and driving to the prevailing road conditions and to the non-operating status of the ESP ® . ! Avoid spinning the driven wheels for an extended period with ESP ® deactivated.
The braking action of PRE-SAFE ® Brake is ended automatically if: R you maneuver to avoid the obstacle. R there is no longer any danger of a rear-end collision. R there is no longer an obstacle detected in front of your vehicle. i USA only: This device has been approved by the FCC as a "Vehicular Radar System".
R a narrow vehicle traveling in front, e.g. a motorbike R a vehicle traveling in front on a different line G WARNING PRE-SAFE ® Brake does not react: R to people or animals R to oncoming vehicles R to crossing traffic R in curves As a result, PRE-SAFE ® Brake cannot intervene in critical situations.
X To arm: lock the vehicle with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO. Indicator lamp : flashes. The alarm system is armed after approximately 15 seconds. X To disarm: unlock the vehicle with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO. X To stop the alarm using the SmartKey: insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.

: & Locks the vehicle ; F Unlocks the trunk lid = % Unlocks the vehicle When unlocking, the turn signals flash once. When locking, they flash three times. When it is dark, the surround lighting also comes on if it is activated in the on-board computer ( Y page 214).
X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface of the door handle. X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface : . X Convenience closing feature: touch recessed sensor surface ; for an extended period ( Y page 88). If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid, only the trunk of the vehicle is unlocked.
Removing the mechanical key X Push release catch : in the direction of the arrow and at the same time, remove mechanical key ; from the SmartKey. SmartKey battery Important safety notes Have the batteries changed at a qualified specialist workshop. G WARNING Batteries contain toxic substances.

Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of the SmartKey.
Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 308).
Unlocking and opening doors from the inside You can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked. You can only open the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they are not secured by the child-proof locks ( Y page 61). Only open the door when the traffic situation permits.
X To deactivate: press and hold button : for about five seconds until a tone sounds. X To activate: press and hold button ; for about five seconds until a tone sounds. i If you press one of the two buttons and do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has already been selected.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above, the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti- theft alarm system is not armed. Trunk Important safety notes Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk. You could otherwise lock yourself out. G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
Opening and closing manually Opening X Press the % button on the SmartKey. X Pull handle : . X Raise the trunk lid. Closing G WARNING To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the trunk opening when closing the trunk lid.
R Press the KEYLESS-GO locking/closing switch. R Pull the trunk lid handle. Even with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch or the SmartKey with KEYLESS- GO removed from the vehicle, the remote trunk opening/closing switch can be operated. Therefore, do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
Locking the trunk separately You can lock the trunk separately. If you then unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk remains locked and cannot be opened. X Close the trunk lid. X Take the mechanical key out of the SmartKey ( Y page 76). X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid lock as far as the stop.
Trunk lid emergency release light: R emergency release button : flashes for 30 minutes after the trunk lid is opened R emergency release button : flashes for 60 minutes after the trunk lid is closed. The trunk lid emergency release does not open the trunk lid if the battery is disconnected or discharged.
automatic operation by operating the switch again. i You can continue to operate the side windows after you switch off the engine or remove the SmartKey. This function is available for up to five minutes or until the driver's or front-passenger door is opened.
X Touch recessed sensor surface : on the door handle until the side windows and the sliding sunroof are fully closed. i Make sure you only touch recessed sensor surface : . X Make sure that all the side windows and the sliding sunroof are closed. X To interrupt convenience closing: release recessed sensor surface : on the door handle.
being harmed by the opening/closing procedure. The sliding sunroof is equipped with automatic operation and the anti-entrapment feature. If the movement of the sliding sunroof is blocked during the closing procedure, the sliding sunroof will stop and open slightly.
Resetting Reset the sliding sunroof if it does not move smoothly. X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the ignition lock. X Raise the sliding sunroof fully at the rear ( Y page 90). X Keep the 3 switch pressed for another second. X Make sure that the sliding sunroof can be fully opened and closed again ( Y page 90).

Seats Important safety notes G WARNING In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control, all seat, head restraint, steering wheel and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before setting the vehicle in motion.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R do not spill any liquids on the seats.

X To adjust the side bolsters of the head restraint: push or pull right and/or left- hand side bolster : into the desired position. X To adjust the angle of the head restraint: push or pull the head restraint in the direction of arrow ; .
X To remove: pull the head restraint up to the stop. X Press release catch : and pull the head restraint out of the guides. X To re-install: insert the head restraint so that the notches on the bar are on the left when viewed in the direction of travel.
X To switch on: press button ; once or twice until the desired level is set. One or two indicator lamps in button ; light up. X To switch off: press button ; repeatedly until all indicator lamps in button ; go out. Massage function (PULSE) The massage function helps you to prevent muscle tension on long journeys.
Rear seat: the system automatically switches down from level 3 to level 2 after approximately five minutes. The system automatically switches down from level 2 to level 1 after approximately ten minutes. The system automatically switches off approximately 20 minutes after it is set to level 1 .
Therefore, do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
Children could open the driver's door and unintentionally activate the easy-entry/exit feature, which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury. G WARNING Let the system complete the adjustment procedure before setting the vehicle in motion.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button : for the left-hand exterior mirror or button ; for the right-hand exterior mirror. The indicator lamp in the corresponding button lights up in red. The indicator lamp goes out again after some time.
( Y page 103) repeatedly until you hear the mirror engage in position. The mirror housing is engaged again and you can adjust the exterior mirrors as usual ( Y page 102).
Calling up a stored parking position setting X With the SmartKey in position 2 in the ignition lock and the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side activated, engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the stored parking position.

4 c Automatic headlamp mode/daytime running lamps 5 L Low-beam/high-beam headlamps The turn signals, high-beam headlamps and the high-beam flasher are operated using the combination switch ( Y page 110). ! Switch off the parking lamps and standing lamps when you leave the vehicle.
running lamps 8 or the low-beam headlamps are switched on or off automatically. When the low-beam headlamps are switched on, the L indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. G WARNING If the light switch is set to c or à , the low-beam headlamps will not come on automatically if it is foggy.
The K indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up when the high-beam headlamps are switched on. X To switch off the high-beam headlamps: move the combination switch back to its normal position. The K indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist You can use this function to set the headlamps to change between low beam and high beam automatically. The system recognizes vehicles with their lights on, either approaching from the opposite direction or traveling in front of your vehicle, and consequently switches the headlamps from high beam to low beam.
The system cannot recognize the following road users: R Road users without a lighting system of their own, e.g. pedestrians R Road users with dim lighting of their own, e.
Interior lighting control Important notes In order to prevent the vehicle's battery from discharging, the interior lighting functions are automatically deactivated after some time except for when the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock.
Never use a bulb which has been dropped. Such a bulb may explode and injure you. Halogen bulbs are pressurized and could explode when you change them, especially if they are very hot. You should therefore wear eye protection and gloves when you are changing them.
Windshield wipers Switching the windshield wipers on/ off G WARNING Wiper blades are components that are subject to wear and tear. Replace the wiper blades twice a year, preferably in the spring and fall. Otherwise the windshield will not be wiped properly.
Hold the windshield wiper arm firmly when you change the wiper blade. If you release the windshield wiper arm without a wiper blade and it falls onto the windshield, the windshield may be damaged by the force of the impact. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the wiper blades replaced by a qualified specialist workshop, e.
Problems with the windshield wipers The windshield wipers are obstructed Leaves or snow, for example, may be obstructing the windshield wiper movement. The wiper motor has been deactivated. X For safety reasons, you should remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock.

For this reason, vehicles in the next lane may not be detected, especially if they are driving in a staggered formation.
