R Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat. R Improper repair work on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment.
R Only hold the steering wheel by the rim. Placing hands and arms inside the rim can increase the risk and potential severity of hand/arm injury when the driver front air bag inflates. R Adjust the front-passenger seat as far back as possible from the dashboard when the seat is occupied.

PRE-SAFE ® (preventative occupant protection) G WARNING The PRE-SAFE ® system reduces the impact of an accident on vehicle occupants, as long as their seat belts have been fastened correctly. Although your vehicle is equipped with a PRE- SAFE ® system, the possibility of injury in the event of an accident cannot be ruled out.
In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt. The air bags can only protect as intended if the occupants are properly wearing their seat belts. G WARNING Never ride in a moving vehicle with the seat backrest in an excessively reclined position as this can be dangerous.
R Position the lap belt as low as possible on your hips and not across the abdomen. If the lap belt is positioned across your abdomen, it could cause serious injuries in a crash. R Never wear seat belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, keys etc.
X Adjust the seat and move the backrest to an almost vertical position ( Y page 92). X Pull the seat belt smoothly through belt sash guide : . X Without twisting it, guide the shoulder section of the seat belt across the middle of your shoulder and the lap section across your hips.
Emergency Tensioning Device and seat belt force limiters The seat belts are equipped with ETDs and seat belt force limiters. The ETDs tighten the seat belts in an accident, pulling them close against the body. The ETDs do not correct incorrect seat positions or incorrectly fastened seat belts.
child. The infant or child restraint system must be properly secured in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. All infant or child restraint systems must meet U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 213 and 225 and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 213 and 210.
R If you place a child in a forward-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat: - move the seat as far back as possible - use the proper child restraint recommended for the age, size and weigh.

Child-proof locks Important safety notes G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Important safety notes i Observe the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 61). ABS regulates brake pressure in such a way that the wheels do not lock when you brake. This allows you to continue steering the vehicle when braking.
Any unauthorized modification to this device could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. With the help of the radar sensor system, BAS PLUS can detect obstacles that are in the path of your vehicle for an extended period of time.
ESP ® (Electronic Stability Program) Important safety notes i See the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 61). If ESP ® detects that the vehicle is deviating from the direction desired by the driver, one or more wheels are braked to stabilize the vehicle.
Beware of these limits if you deactivate ESP ® . Do not deactivate ESP ® when the emergency or spare wheel is mounted. ESP ® is activated automatically when the engine is started. i Vehicles with ECO start/stop function: the ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically when the vehicle comes to a stop.
X Observe the notes on warning and indicator lamps ( Y page 380) as well as display messages ( Y page 349). ADAPTIVE BRAKE ADAPTIVE BRAKE enhances braking safety and offers increased braking comfort. In addition to the braking function, ADAPTIVE BRAKE also has the HOLD function ( Y page 302) and hill start assist ( Y page 269).
At speeds up to approximately 40 mph (70 km/h), PRE-SAFE ® Brake can also react to stationary obstacles, for example stopped or parked vehicles. If you approach an obstacle and PRE-SAFE ® Brake detects a risk of collision, the system will initially alert you both visually and acoustically.
Theft deterrent locking systems Immobilizer The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from being started without the correct SmartKey. When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. The engine can be started by anyone with a valid SmartKey that is left inside the vehicle.
X To stop the alarm using KEYLESS-GO: grasp the outside door handle. The SmartKey must be outside the vehicle. The alarm is switched off. or X Press the Start/Stop button on the dashboard. The SmartKey must be inside the vehicle. The alarm is switched off.

X Make sure that the surface of the battery is free from lint, grease and all other forms of contamination. X Insert the front tabs of battery tray cover : and then press to close it. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. X Check the function of all SmartKey buttons on the vehicle.
Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of the SmartKey.

G WARNING Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the passenger compartment unless they are firmly secured in place. Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo increases a child's risk of injury in t.
Automatic locking feature The vehicle locks automatically when the ignition is switched on and the wheels of the vehicle are turning at a speed of more than 9 mph (15 km/h). You could therefore be locked out when: R the vehicle is being pushed. R the vehicle is being towed.
Locking the vehicle If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the SmartKey, you can lock it by taking the following steps. If the central locking in the vehicle is malfunctioning, you cannot lock the trunk. X Open the front-passenger door. X Close the driver's door and the trunk lid.
The trunk lid can be: R opened and closed manually from outside R opened and closed automatically from outside R opened and closed automatically from inside R locked separately R unlocked with the mechanical key R opened with the emergency release button Opening and closing manually Opening X Press the % button on the SmartKey.
Closing G WARNING Monitor the closing procedure carefully to make sure no one is in danger of being injured. To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the trunk opening when closing the trunk lid. Be especially careful when small children are around.
X To open: press remote operating switch for trunk lid : until the trunk lid opens. X To close: press remote operating switch for trunk lid : until the trunk lid is closed. Locking the trunk separately You can lock the trunk separately. If you then unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk remains locked and cannot be opened.
X Briefly press emergency release button : . The trunk lid unlocks and opens. The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened with the trunk lid emergency release when the vehicle is stationary or while driving. Trunk lid emergency release light: R emergency release button : flashes for 30 minutes after the trunk lid is opened.
The switches on the driver's door take precedence. i The side windows cannot be operated from the rear when the override feature for the side windows is activated ( Y page 60). X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X To open: press the corresponding switch.
Using KEYLESS-GO The KEYLESS-GO key must be outside the vehicle. All the doors must be closed. X Touch recessed sensor surface : on the door handle until the side windows and the sliding sunroof are fully closed. i Make sure you only touch recessed sensor surface : .
G WARNING Pulling and holding the switch to close the window immediately after it had been blocked two times will cause the window to close without the anti-entrapment feature for as long as you hold the switch.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press or pull the 3 switch in the corresponding direction. i If you press the 3 switch beyond the point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the corresponding direction.

Seats Important safety notes G WARNING In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control, all seat, head restraint, steering wheel and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before setting the vehicle in motion.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R keep liquids from spilling on the seats.
Make sure no one is caught or injured while the seat is being adjusted. Even with the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO removed from the starter switch or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO removed from the vehicle, the power seats can be operated. Therefore, do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
Folding back the rear seat head restraints from the front X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button : . Folding the rear seat head restraints into position pneumatically X Press and hold button : until the head restraints are folded up.
Folding the backrest forwards In order to make it convenient for passengers to get in and out of the rear compartment, the driver's or front-passenger seat: R is automatically moved forwards when.
Problems with the seat heating The seat heating has switched itself off prematurely. The vehicle's electrical system voltage is too low because too many electrical consumers are switched on. X Switch off electrical consumers which you do not need, such as the rear window defroster or interior lighting.

X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock.
Position of the steering wheel and the driver's seat when the EASY-ENTRY/ EXIT feature is active The steering wheel tilts upwards and the driver's seat moves backwards if you: R remove the S.
Folding the exterior mirrors in or out electrically X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Briefly press button : . Both exterior mirrors fold in or out. i Make sure that the exterior mirrors are always folded out fully while the vehicle is in motion, as they may otherwise vibrate.
X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary and that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button = for the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side. X Engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the preset parking position.

COMAND display Display overview The COMAND display shows the function currently selected and its associated menus. The COMAND display is divided into several areas.

For example, the "Navi" function can be used from the driver's side while the "Video" function is used on the front-passenger side.

After this time or after the SmartKey has been removed, the settings on the front- passenger side are saved for approximately 30 minutes longer.
Avoid using alcoholic thinners, gasoline or abrasive cleaning agents. These could damage the display surface. Do not apply pressure to the display surface when cleaning it, as this could cause irreversible damage. Remote control Overview You can use the remote control to operate the COMAND display and SPLITVIEW.

Functions with the E and F button You can use the remote control to execute the same functions as the COMAND control panel. Mode Function Audio mode Selects a station using the station search function.
Calling up the menu of a main function : To call up the audio menu ; Main function bar If one of the main functions navigation, audio, telephone or video is switched on, triangle : appears next to the entry. You can now select an associated menu. The following example illustrates how to call up the audio menu.
Calling up the audio function X Select Audio in the main function bar by sliding ZV and turning cVd the COMAND controller and press W to confirm. The basic display of the current audio operating mode, e.g. audio CD, appears. Switching to radio mode Option 1 X Press the R function button.
You can enter the characters using either the character bar or the number keypad. In the selection list, you select an entry to copy it to the address entry menu. Option 1: city list with character bar X Call up the city list with character bar ( Y page 137).

Obstructions and stationary vehicles DISTRONIC PLUS does not brake for obstacles or stationary vehicles. If, for example, the detected vehicle turns a corner and reveals an obstacle or stationary vehicle, DISTRONIC PLUS will not brake for these. Crossing vehicles DISTRONIC PLUS may mistakenly detect vehicles that are crossing your lane.
Deactivating the HOLD function The HOLD function is deactivated automatically if: R you accelerate and the transmission is in position D or R . R you shift the transmission to position P . R you apply the brakes again with a certain amount of pressure until HOLD disappears from the instrument cluster.

Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic car wash, the compressed-air brakes on a truck or a pneumatic drill could cause PARKTRONIC to malfunction. PARKTRONIC may not function correctly on uneven terrain.

Notes on regularly inspecting wheels and tires G WARNING Regularly check the tires for damage. Damaged tires can cause tire inflation pressure loss. As a result, you could lose control of your vehicle. Worn, old tires can cause accidents. If the tire tread is worn to minimum tread depth, or if the tires have sustained damage, replace them.
