The vehicle may be deformed significantly, e.g. the hood or the fender ,w ithout an air bag being deployed. This is the case if only parts which are relatively easily deformed are affected and the rate of deceleration is not high.
R Improper repai rw ork on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the SRS must therefor eo nly be performed by qualified technicians.

It lights up regardless of whether the driver's and front-passenger seat belts have already been fastened.
Tensionin gD evice could be triggered in the event of an accident. The fron ts eat belts and the outer seat belts in the rear are equipped with Emergency Tensioning Devices and seat belt force limiters. The ETD st ighten the seat belts in an accident, pulling them close against the body.

G WARNING Child restraint systems or their securing systems which have been damaged or subjected to al oa di na na ccident can no longer protect as intended. The child cannot then be restrained in the event of an accident, heavy braking or sudden changes of direction.
If an infant or child is traveling in the vehicle: R Secure the child with ac hild or infant seat restraint system appropriate to the age and weight of the child. R Make sure that the infant or child is properl ys ecured at all times whil et he vehicle is in motion.

Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of the SmartKey.
Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 299).

When you lock the vehicle, you can simultaneously: R close the side windows R close the panorama roof with power tilt/ sliding panel On vehicles with ap anorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel, you can then close the roller sunblinds. i The SmartKey must be close to the driver's door handle.
If as ide window is obstructed again during closing and reopens again slightly: X Immediately after the window blocks, pull the corresponding switch again until the side window has closed. The side window is closed withou tt he anti- entrapment feature.
Operating the sliding sunroof Overhead control panel : To raise ; To open = To close/lower X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Make sure that the roller sunblinds are open. X Press or pull the 3 switch in the correspondin gd irection.
Opening and closing Overhead control panel : To open ; To open = To close X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press or pull the 3 switch in the correspondin gd irection. i If you press the 3 switch beyond the point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the correspondin gd irection.

The seat belt should: R fit snugly across your body R be routed across the middle of your shoulder R be routed in your pelvic area across the hip joints X Before starting off, adjust the rear-view mirror and the exterior mirrors ( Y page 99) in such aw ay that you have ag ood view of road and traffic conditions.

Ac hild's risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and/ or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint.

With this function you can adjust the distance between the head restraint and the back of the seat occupant's head. X To adjust forwards: pull the head restraint forwards in the direction of the arrow until it engages. There are several notches. X To move backwards: press and hold release button : and push the head restraint backwards.

To harden the backrest contour Switching the seat heating on/off Activating/deactivating G WARNING Repeatedly switchin go nt he seat heating can cause the seat cushion and backrest pads to become very hot.
Problems with the seat heating Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The seat heating has switched off prematurely or cannot be switched on.
Mirrors Rear-view mirror X Anti-glare mode: flick anti-glare lever : forwards or back. Exterior mirrors Adjusting the exteri or mirrors G WARNING The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side reduces the size of the image. Visible objects are actually closer than they appear.
i Make sure that the exterior mirrors are always folded out fully while driving. They could otherwise vibrate. i If you are driving faster than 30 mph (47 km/h), you can no longer fold in the exterior mirrors. Setting the exterior mirrors If the battery has been disconnected or completely discharged, the exterior mirrors must be reset.
X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary. X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the ignition lock ( Y page 137). X Press button ; for the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side. X Engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the preset parking position.
While the memory function is making adjustments, make sure that no one has any body parts in the sweep of the seat. If somebody becomes trapped, immediately release the memory function position button. The adjustmen tp rocess is stopped. G WARNING Children could become trappe di ft hey activate the memory function, particularl y when unattended .

Automatic headlamp mode G WARNING When th el igh ts witc hi ss et to à ,t he low- beam headlamp sm ay not be switche do n automatically if there is fog, snow or other causes of poor visibility due to th ew eather conditions such as spray. Ther ei sar isk of an accident.
Rear fog lamp The rea rf og lamp improves visibility of your vehicle for the traffic behind in the event of thick fog. Please take not eo ft he country- specific regulations for the use of rear fog lamps. X To switch on the rear fog lamps: turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to position 2 or start the engine.
The blue K indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up when the high- beam headlamps are switched on. X To switch off the high-beam headlamps: move the combination switch back to its normal position. The blue K indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
Extende dr an ge fog lamps The extended range fog lamps reduc et he glare experienced by th ed river and improve th ei lluminatio no ft he edge of the road. Active: if you are driving at speeds below 40 mph (70 km/h) and you switch on the rear fog lamp.
Switching Adaptive Highbeam Assist on/off X To activate: activate the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function using the on- board computer ( Y page 203). X Turn the light switch to à . X Press the combination switch beyond the pressure point in the direction of arrow : ( Y page 106).

Turn signals (haloge nh ea dlamps) X Switch off the lights. X Open the hood. X Turn bulb holder : counter-clockwis ea nd pull it out. X Take the bulb ou to fb ulb holder : . X Inser tt he new bulb into bulb holder : . X Insert bulb holder : and turn it clockwise until it engages.
Tail lamp Turn signal lamp/tail lamp and brake lamp X Switch off the lights. X Open the cargo compartment. X Open the side trim panel ( Y page 114). X Press retaining lugs : simultaneously in the direction of the arrow and pull the bulb holde ro ut.
X Pull out connector C of the surround lighting by releasing the latches. X Place trim B to one side. X On the side where the bulb is to be changed, unclip the remaining part of trim D from the assembly using as udden, sharp movements, until bulb holder E is accessible.
X Position trim B and engage it in place by tapping it with your hand, starting from the outside. X Clip in the lower section of handle : again. X Inser ta nd engag et he uppe rs ection of handle = int ol ower section : . License plat el amp X Switc ho ff the lights.
