14 Catalyt ic Converter Your Merced es-Benz is equipped with monolithic type catal ytic converters, an important element in conj unction with the O2~sensor to achieve sub stantial control of the pollutants in t he exhaust emissions.
15 Starting a nd Turning Off t he Engine Before Sta rting Engage parking brake and move the selector lever to position "P" . Turn key in steeri ng lock to position 2. The charge indicator la mp should come on. Cold Engine Turn key in steeri ng lock clo ckwise to the stop.
16 Driving Instructions Power Assistance When the engine is not runnin g, the brake and steer ing systems are without power assistance. Under these circumstances, a much greater effort is necessary to stop or steer the vehicle.
17 If the parking brake is released and the brake w a rning la mp in the inst rument cluster stays on, the b rake fluid level in the reservoir is too low. Brake pad wear or a leak in the syste m may be the reason for lo w brake fluid in the reservoir.
18 Aquaplaning Depending on t he depth o f the water layer on the roa d, aquaplani ng may occur, even a t lo w speeds and with ne w tires. Reduce vehicle speed , avoid track grooves in the r oad and a pply brakes cautiously in t he rain. Tire Traction The safe speed on a wet, snow co vered or icy road is always lo wer than on a d ry road.
19 Winter Driving Instruct ions The most important r ule for slippery or icy roads is to d rive sensibly and to avoid abrupt ac celeration, braking and steering maneuvers. D o not use the cruise control system under such conditions. When the vehicle is in danger of skidding, move selector lever to position "N".

24 The temperature selected with the temperature selector is r eache d as quickly as possible. The temperature selector sho uld be left at the desired temperature setti ng. With the center air outlets open and the system in heating mode, switch the outlets to non-heated/ cooled air by pressing the bl ue button (indic ator la mp lights up).
25 6 Residual Engine Heat Utilization With the engine switched o ff, it is possible to continue heatin g the interior for a short while. The rear passenger compartment air o utlet must be closed. Air volume and d istribution ar e controlled automaticall y.
26 8 Air Volume Selector The air volume is automatically regulated in AUTO = Normal setting and all intermediate po sitions, except when selectin g MIN = minimum air flow, MAX = maximum air flow. 9 Economy The function of t his setting c orresponds to the automatic mode.

28 Car Keys Included with your vehicle are : • 2 Master ke ys with infrared remote control, • 1 Master key, • 1 Valet key, • 1 Flat key. • Master K ey with Infra red Remote Control The master ke y fits all locks on the car.

35 Anti-Theft A larm Syste m The anti-theft alarm can be armed o r disarmed with any of your vehicles keys or infrared r emote contro l by locking or unlo cking either front door or the trunk.

40 Heated Seat s The front seat heater s witches are located to the left and right side of th e center console ashtra y. The rear seat heater switches are located in eac h rear do or. The front seat heaters can b e switched on with the ke y in steering loc k positions 1 or 2, the rear seat heaters only in steering loc k position 2.

46 Seat Belt s and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Your vehicle is equipp ed with seat belts for all seats, e mergency tensioning retracto rs for the front seats, as well as airbags a nd knee bolsters for driver and front passen ger. Seat Belts Important! Laws in most states a nd all Canadian provinces require seat b elt use.
47 1 Latch plate 2 Buckle 3 Release button Fastening of Seat B elts Push latch plate (1) into b uckle (2) until it clicks. The lap belt should be positioned as low as possible on your hips a nd not across the abdo men. Three-point seat belt: Tighten the lap portion to a snug fit by pulling s houlder p ortion up.
48 Warning! USE SEAT B ELTS PROPERLY. • Each occupant should w ear their seat belt at all times. Together with the "SRS" (a irbags, ETR's and knee bolsters for driver and front seat passenger) , the seat belt offer s the best conditions fo r protection o f the body in c ase of major fronta l impact.
49 Supplemental Restra int Syste m (SRS) The SRS uses t wo cras h severit y levels (thresholds) to activate either t he ETR or airb ag or both. Activation d epends on exceeding t he thresholds a nd fastening of the seat belt.
50 Airbags The most effective occ upant restraint system yet develop ed for use in production vehicles is t he seat b elt. In some cases, however, the pr otective effect of a seat belt can be furt her enhanced by an airb ag. The dr iver airbag (1) is located in the steering wheel hub.
51 The follo wing system co mponents are monitored or undergo a self-check: crash-sensor, air bag ignition cir cuits, driver and passenger seat belt buckles.
52 Important! The "SRS" is designed to r educe the potential of injury in certa in frontal and front-a ngled impacts which may cause injuries, howeve r, no system available t oday can totally eliminate injuries and fata lities. The activatio n of the "SRS" temporarily relea ses a sm a ll amount of dust from the air-bags.
53 Safety Guidelines for t he Seat Belt, Emergency Tensioning Ret ractor and Airbag Warning! • Da maged belts or belts that we re highly stressed in an a ccident m ust be replaced and their a nchoring points must also be chec ked. Use only belts installed or supplied by an authorized M ercedes-B enz dealer.
54 Infant and Child Re straint Systems We reco mmend that all infants and children be restrained at all ti mes while the vehicle is in motion. Important! The use of infant or child restra ints is required by law in all 50 states and all Canadian pro vinces.
55 Steering Lock 0 The ke y can be withdra wn in this position only. T he steering is locked with the key re moved fro m the steering lock. T he key can b e removed only with the selector lever in position "P" . After re moving the key or with the key in steering lock position 0, the selector lever is locked in po sition "P".

58 Exterior Lamp Swit ch Canada only: When the engine is running, the lo w beam (incl udes p arking la mps, side marker lamps, tail lamps, license plate lamps and instrument p anel lamps) are automatically s witched on.
59 Inside and Exterior Rear V iew Mirrors Inside Rear View M irror The mirror is e lectrically ad justable. Antiglare night position: T ilt the mirror to the antiglare night position usin g the lever at its lower edge. Use your inside mirror to determine the size and dista nce of obj ects seen in the passenger side convex mirro r.
60 Note: The exterior mirrors have elec trically heated glass. T he heater switches on automatically, de pending on o utside temperature. If an exterio r mirror housing is forcibl y pivoted from its normal positio n, it must be repositioned by appl ying fir m pressure until it snap s into pla ce.
61 Sun Visors Swing sun viso rs do wn to protect against sun glare. If sunlight en ters through a side window, disen gage visor from inner mounting and pivot to the side.
62 Interior Lighting 1 Interior La m ps (Doo r contact) A B A Interior la mps are switched on, and off delayed, when unlocking or locking the ve hicle, or when opening either front door. However, there will be no delay when the ke y is in steering lo ck position 2.

67 The power windo ws can also be closed with the key o r infrared remote control while locking the vehicle doo rs (see Central Locking S ystem in Index). Warning! When leaving the v ehicle, alw ays remove the key fro m the steering lock. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle.
68 Setting Clock 1 Knob for setting cloc k Adjusting clock o ne minute a head o r back: Pull out adjustment knob, briefly turn to the right respective ly left and release knob. Adjusting clock more than o ne mi nute ahead or ba ck: Pull out adjustment knob, tur n to the right respectively le ft and hold until the desired time is set.
69 Driving.
70 Drinking and Driv ing Warning! Drinking and driving can be a very dangerous co mbination. Eve n a small amount of alcohol or drugs can aff ect your reflexes, perc eptions and judgement. The possibility of a serious or even fatal accident is sharply increa sed when you drink an d drive.
71 Automatic Trans mission The automatic transmissio n selects individual gears auto matically, dependent upon • Selector lever po sition • Accelerator po sition • Vehicle speed Important! When .
72 Selector Lever Po sitions The automatic gear shiftin g process can b e adapte d to specific operating condition s using the selector lever. P Parking lock. The par king lock is an additio nal safeguard to the parking brake when parking the veh icle.
73 negatively a ffected by this mode o f operation. The delayed up shift is effective with vehicle sp eeds b elow 3 1 mph (50 km/h) at partial throttle a nd engine temperatures belo w 95°F (35°C). Do not exceed the vehicle speed limits for individual gear selections, which are indicated by marks (I, II, III etc.
74 Rear Fender Indicators When the reverse gear is selec ted, the rear fender indicators will extend upward from the rear corners of the fenders. The rear fender indicators retra ct delayed when shifting out o f reverse. They retract i mmediately whe n turning key in steerin g lock to po sition 0.
75 3 Canceling To cancel the cruise control, br iefly push lever to position 3. When you step on the brake or the vehicle sp eed drops b elow appr ox. 25 mph (40 km/h), for example when driving upgrade, the cru ise control will be canceled .
76 Charge Indicator La mp Should the charge indicator la mp fail to come on prio r to star ting when the ke y is in steering lo ck position 2 or should it fail to go out after startin g or come while the engine is running, th is indicates a fault which must b e repaired at an authorized Mercedes-Benz d ealer immediately.
77 Low Engine Oil Level Wa rning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the oil level warning la mp comes on and should go out when the engine is running. If the war ning lamp co mes on with t he engine running a nd at op erating temperature, the en gine oil level has dropped to approximately the minimum mark on the dip stick.
78 Fuel Reserve Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the fuel r eserve warning la mps co me on and should go out when the engine is running. If the warning lamps do not go out after starting the engine or if the y come on while driving, it i ndicates that the fuel level is do wn to the reserve quantity of approx.
79 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out when the engine is running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting t he engine, o r if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
80 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination o f this lamp i ndicates an exterior lamp failure.
81 Brake Warning Lamp The brake warning lamp will co me on with the key i n steering loc k position 2 and should go out when the engine is running. The brake warning lamp will co me on: • when there is i nsufficient br ake fluid in the re servoir (engine running and p arking brake released) • when the parki ng brake is set (engine running).
82 Antilock B rake Syste m (AB S) The ABS prevent s the wheels fro m locking up above a vehicle speed of approximately 2 mph (3 km/h) independent o f road surface conditions. It is necessar y, however, that the vehicle speed r eaches at least 5 mph (8 km/h) be fore commencing t o bra ke.
83 Acceleration Slip Co ntrol (ASR) The accelera tion slip control will engage at all vehicle speeds, if o ne or both dr ive wheels begin to lo se tractio n and spin.
84 Driving the vehicle with dif ferent size tires will cause the wheel s to rotate at different speeds, there fore the acceleration slip c ontrol will activate (yellow AS R function i ndicato r lamp in instrument cluster comes on). Fo r this reason, all wheels, including the spare wheel, must have the same tir e size.
85 Emission Control Certain systems of the engine serve to keep the toxic components of the exhaust gases within per missible limits required by law. These s ystems, of course, will functio n proper ly only whe n m ai ntained strictly according to factory sp ecificatio ns.
86 Traveling Abroad Abroad, there is a widely-spre ad Mercedes-Benz ser vice network at your disposal. If you plan to tr avel into area s which are not listed in the i ndex of your dealer director y, y ou should request pertinent infor mation fro m your authorized Mercede s-Benz dealer.
87 Practical Hints.
88 Hood To op en: To unlock the hoo d, pull r elease lever (1) under the driver's side of the instrument panel. At the same time handle (2) will extend out of the radiator grill (it may be neces sary to lift the hood up slightly).
89 Checking Coolant Level To check the coo lant level, t he vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped . Check coolant le vel only when coolant is cold.
90 The best time to check the engine oil level is when the o il is warm, such as during a fuel stop . With the vehicle on level grou nd, stop the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to d rain back to the oil pan. Wipe the d ipstick clean be fore checking.
91 Checking Automatic Tran smission Fluid Level Dipstick locki ng lever 1 Release 2 Engage When noticing fluid loss or gear shifting malfunctions, we reco mmend to have your authorized Merc edes-Benz dealer check the transmission fluid level.
92 Trunk Lamp 1 Switching off Switch off (1 ) trunk lamp with car key (at the same time the trunk lid handle will retract). T his prevents the vehicle battery fro m being discharged if the trunk is to re main open for along period of time. To close the trunk lid b y its handle, first switch tru nk lamp on.
93 Vehicle Jack See illustration for pro per storage of jack. Before stor ing the jack on the felt in the spare wheel well, the jack ar m (1 ) must be lowered almost to the base (2 ) of the jack. Warning! The jac k is de signed e xclusively for jacking up the vehicle at t he jack tubes built into either side of the vehicle.

98 Tire Inflation Press ure A table (see fuel filler flap) lists the tire inflation pressures specified for summer and winter tires as well a s for the varying ope rating conditio ns. Important! Tire pressure changes by appr ox. 1 .5 psi (0.1 bar) per 18°F (10°C) of air temperature change.
99 Battery The maintenance-free ba ttery is located in the trunk under the right-hand wheel well cover panel. The service life of the battery is dependent on its c ondition of charge. The battery should a lways b e sufficiently charged to last an optimum length of ti me.

101 When replacing ha logen bulbs do not touch glass p ortion of b ulb with b are hands. Use plain paper o r a clean cloth. Warning! Halogen lamps contain pressurize d gas. A bulb can exp lode if you: • touch or move it when hot, • drop the bulb, • scratch the bulb.

103 High Mounte d Stop Lamp (H2 [ 20W] bulb) To rep lace the bulb, press tabs on b oth sides (arro ws) to release cover . Turn bulb so cket with bulb c ounter- clockwise and pull out.
