The twisted seat belt against your body could cause injuries. R Pregnant women should also always use a lap-shoulder belt. The lap belt portion should be positioned as low as possible on the hips to avoid any possible pressure on the abdomen. R Place the seat backrest in a position that is as upright as possible.
X Without twisting it, place the shoulder section of the seat belt over the center of the shoulder and the lap section across the hips. X Engage belt tongue ; in buckle = . Seat belt adjustment: if necessary, the driver's and front-passenger seat belts automatically adjust to the upper body ( Y page 56).
Belt warning for driver and front passenger Regardless of whether the driver's and front- passenger seat belts have already been fastened, the 7 seat belt warning lamp lights up for six seconds each time the engine is started. It then goes out once the driver and the front passenger have fastened their seat belts.
R the belt tongue is engaged in the buckle on each of the three-point seat belts in the front R the front-passenger seat is occupied and the belt tongue is engaged in the buckle on the front-passenger side. The ETDs on the outside seats in the rear compartment are triggered independently of the lock status of the seat belts.
G Warning! Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the passenger compartment or trunk unless they are firmly secured in place. Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo increases a child's risk of i.
Children can be killed or seriously injured by an inflating air bag. Note the following important information when circumstances require you to place a child in the front- passenger seat: R USA only: .
or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint. Children too big for a toddler restraint must ride in seats using regular seat belts. Position the shoulder belt across the chest and shoulder, not face or neck.
ISOFIX is a standardized securing system for specially-designed child restraint systems on the rear seats. Securing rings for two ISOFIX child restraint systems are installed on the left and right of the rear seats. Install child restraint systems without the ISOFIX securing system using the vehicle's seat belts.
X Move the head restraint upwards. X Install the ISOFIX child restraint system with Top Tether. Comply with the manufacturer's installation instructions when doing so. X Route Top Tether belt ? under the head restraint between the two head restraint bars.
X To activate: press the child-proof lock lever down in the direction of arrow ; . X Make sure that the child-proof locks are working properly. Braking If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a pulsing in the brake pedal. X If ABS intervenes: continue to depress the brake pedal with force until the braking situation is over. X To make a full brake application: depress the brake pedal with full force.
Failure to observe these guidelines could cause the vehicle to skid. The ESP ® cannot prevent accidents resulting from excessive speed. ! Vehicles without 4MATIC: switch the ignition off when: R the .
R traction control is still activated. R ESP ® still provides support when you brake. If ESP ® is deactivated and one or more wheels start to spin, the d warning lamp in the instrument cluster flashes. In such situations, ESP ® will not stabilize the vehicle.

Important information about using KEYLESS-GO R You can use the KEYLESS-GO key as a conventional SmartKey. R You can combine KEYLESS-GO functions with those of a conventional SmartKey, e.g. you can open the vehicle with KEYLESS-GO and close it with the & button.
X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface of the door handle. X To lock the vehicle: press locking button : . If you pull on the handle of the tailgate, only the cargo compartment of the vehicle is unlocked.
G Warning Batteries contain toxic and caustic substances. For this reason, keep batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery has been swallowed, seek medical help immediately. G Warning The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate material, which may require special handling and regard for the environment.
Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle from a distance of approximately 1.
Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 312).
Unlocking and opening doors from the inside You can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked, unless the child- proof locks have been activated ( Y page 63).
Unlocking the driver's door (mechanical key) If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked centrally with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO: X Take the mechanical key out of the SmartKey ( Y page 75). X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.
If children open a door, they could cause severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if they get out of the vehicle, they could injure themselves when doing so or be seriously or even fatally injured by any passing traffic. Do not expose the child restraint system to direct sunlight.
Automatic opening and closing from the outside Important safety guidelines G Warning! Make sure the tailgate is closed when the engine is running and while driving. Among other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gases may enter vehicle interior resulting in unconsciousness and death.
The tailgate is not closed unless a KEYLESS-GO key is detected. Automatic opening and closing from the inside G Warning! Maintain sight of the area around the rear of the vehicle while operating the tailgate with the door-mounted remote tailgate switch.
Activating the tailgate X To open the tailgate: pull the handle on the tailgate. X To stop the opening procedure at the desired position: press the close button ( Y page 82) on the tailgate or pull the handle on the outside of the tailgate again. X To store the position: press and hold the closing button on the tailgate until you hear a short tone.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo increases a child’s risk of injury in the event of R strong braking maneuvers R sudden changes of direction R an accident G Warning! When opening or closing the door windows, make sure there is no danger of anyone being harmed by the opening/closing procedure.
Convenience opening You can ventilate the vehicle before you start driving. To do this, you can use the SmartKey to simultaneously: R open the side windows R open the sliding sunroof R switch on the seat ventilation of the driver's seat (Canada only) i The convenience opening feature can only be operated using the SmartKey.
X Keep locking button : on the door handle pressed until the side windows and the sliding sunroof are fully closed. X Make sure that all the side windows and the sliding sunroof are closed. X To interrupt convenience closing: release locking button : on the door handle.
Sliding sunroof Important safety guidelines G Warning! When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
! Do not forget that the weather can change abruptly. Make certain that the sliding sunroof is closed when you leave the vehicle. The vehicle electronics can be damaged if water enters the vehicle interior. i Resonance noises can occur in addition to the usual airflow noises when the sliding sunroof is open.
G Warning! You could be severely or even fatally injured when closing the sliding sunroof with increased closing force or if the anti- entrapment feature is deactivated.

Seats Important safety guidelines G Warning In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control, all seat, head restraint, steering wheel and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before setting the vehicle in motion.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R do not spill any liquids on the seats.
Adjusting the head restraints Adjusting the head restraints manually Adjusting the head restraint height 9 ! The head restraints may only be removed in a qualified specialist workshop. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you go to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

X To remove: pull the head restraint up to the stop. X Press release catch : and pull the head restraint out of the guides. X To re-install: insert the head restraint so that the notches on the bar are on the left when viewed in the direction of travel.
Driver's and front-passenger seat Rear compartment seats The system automatically switches down from level 3 to level 2 after approximately five minutes. The system automatically switches down from level 2 to level 1 after approximately ten minutes.
X To switch off: press button : repeatedly until all the indicator lamps go out. Problems with the seat ventilation If one or all of the indicator lamps in the seat ventilation button are flashing, the seat ventilation has switched off automatically.
Adjusting the steering wheel electrically : To adjust the steering wheel position (fore-and-aft adjustment) ; To adjust the steering wheel height i Related topics: R EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature ( Y page 100) R storing settings ( Y page 103) Steering wheel heating Switching on/off The steering-wheel heating heats the leather areas of the steering wheel.
i The steering wheel only moves upwards if it has not already reached the upper end stop. The steering wheel is moved to the last selected position when: R the driver's door is closed, and R you insert the key into the ignition lock. or R in vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, you press the Start/Stop button once.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button ; for the right-hand exterior mirror or button = for the left-hand exterior mirror. The indicator lamp in the corresponding button lights up in red. The indicator lamp goes out again after some time.
The interior rear view mirror and the exterior rear view mirror on the driver’s side do not react, for example, when transporting cargo which covers the rear window. Light hitting the mirror(s) at certain angles (incident light) could blind you. As a result, you may not be able to observe traffic conditions and could cause an accident.
G Warning! The memory function can still be used when the key has been removed. For this reason, children should never be left unsupervised in the vehicle. They could otherwise become trapped when adjusting the seat or the steering wheel. G Warning! Only use the memory function on the driver's side when the vehicle is stationary.

X Turn the light switch to $ or à . or X If the rear fog lamp is switched on: press the light switch in to the stop. Low-beam headlamps X To switch on the low-beam headlamps: turn the key in the ignition lock to position 2 or start the engine. X Turn the light switch to L .

With the engine running: depending on the brightness of the ambient light, the daytime running lamps 12 or the low-beam headlamps are switched on or off automatically. When the low-beam headlamps are switched on, the L indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up.
Combination switch Turn signals : High-beam headlamps ; Right turn signal = High beam flasher ? Left turn signal X To indicate briefly: press the combination switch briefly to the pressure point in the direction of arrow ; or ? . The corresponding turn signal flashes three times.

Automatic interior lighting control X To switch on/off: press the | button. When the automatic interior lighting control is activated, the button is flush with the overhead control panel. The interior lighting automatically switches on if you: R unlock the vehicle R open a door R remove the key from the ignition lock .
Other bulbs G Warning! Bulbs and lamps can be very hot. You should therefore allow them to cool down before you change them. Otherwise, you could be burned if you touch them. Keep bulbs out of the reach of children. Otherwise, they could damage the bulbs, for example, and injure themselves.
Tail lamps without LEDs : Brake lamp: P 21 W ; Turn signal lamp: PY 21 W = Side marker lamp: P 21 W ? Tail lamp/standing lamp/parking lamp/ rear fog lamp (driver's side only): P 21 W A Backup lam.
X Turn bulb holder ; counter-clockwise and pull it out. X Take the bulb out of bulb holder ; . X Insert the new bulb into bulb holder ; . X Insert bulb holder ; into the lamp and turn it clockwise. X Align housing cover : and turn it clockwise until it engages.
X Turn release knobs = 90° in the direction of the arrow and remove stowage compartment ? . X To close: insert stowage compartment ? and turn release knobs = in the opposite direction to the arrow until the slots on the release knobs are in a vertical position.

G Warning! Avoid contact with the vehicle walls as they may contain sharp edges. Otherwise, you could injure yourself while releasing the fuel filler flap. The emergency release is located behind the side trim panel in the cargo compartment. X Open the tailgate.

AdBlue ® Important notes on use BlueTEC exhaust gas aftertreatment 25 must be operated with AdBlue ® reducing agent in order to function properly. Adding AdBlue ® is one of the tasks performed during maintenance. Under normal operating conditions, a tank of AdBlue ® lasts until the next service due date.
! AdBlue ® is not a additive and must not be added to the diesel tank. If AdBlue ® is added to the diesel tank this could damage the engine. i If you are adding between maintenance intervals, add approximately 1 gallon (3.8 l) of AdBlue ® to the AdBlue ® tank.
X Insert AdBlue ® cap : as shown and turn it clockwise as far as it will go. X Fold the load compartment floor down. X Close the tailgate. X Drive at a speed above 10 mph (16 km/h). The Check Additive – See Operator's Manual disappears after approximately one minute.

All exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), and inhaling it can cause unconsciousness and possible death. Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated.
Wet roads G Warning After driving in heavy rain for some time without applying the brakes or through water deep enough to wet brake components, the first braking action may be somewhat reduced. You have to depress the brake pedal more firmly. Maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front.
! Vehicles with 4MATIC: as the ESP ® system operates automatically, the engine and the ignition must be switched off (SmartKey in position 0 or 1 in the ignition lock or Start/Stop button in position 0 or 1 ) while the parking brake is being tested on a brake dynamometer (maximum 10 seconds).
For this reason, in the event of heavy rain or in conditions in which hydroplaning can occur you must drive in the following manner: R Lower your speed R Avoid ruts R Brake carefully Driving on flooded roads ! Do not drive through flooded areas. Check the depth of any water before driving through it.
i Vehicles with a diesel engine: do not cover the radiator, e.g. with a protective cover. The measuring function of the Onboard Diagnosis System may otherwise provide inaccurate values. Some of these values are required by law and must therefore always be accurate.

Hilltops When driving up an uphill gradient, slightly reduce pressure on the accelerator immediately before reaching the brow of the hill. Make use of the vehicle's own impetus to travel over the brow.
G Warning When cruise control brakes, the brake pedal is pulled back (i.e. operated automatically). The area around the pedal must not be blocked by obstacles: R Do not place any objects in the footwell. R Ensure that floormats and carpets are fixed securely.
Setting a speed G Warning Keep in mind that it may take a brief moment until the vehicle has made the necessary adjustments. Increase or decrease the set vehicle speed to a value that the prevailing road conditions and legal speed limits permit.
G Warning! The Distronic requires familiarity with its operational characteristics. We strongly recommend that you review the following information carefully before operating the system. G Warning! HYBRID vehicles: It is imperative that you read the HYBRID Supplemental Operating Instructions included in your vehicle literature portfolio.
G Warning! The Distronic cannot take weather conditions into account. Switch off the Distronic or do not switch it on if: R roads are slippery or covered with snow or ice. The wheels could lose traction while braking or accelerating, and the vehicle could skid.
Activating DISTRONIC, storing and maintaining the current speed G Warning! The vehicle can be braked when DISTRONIC is activated. For this reason, deactivate DISTRONIC if the vehicle is to be set in motion by other means (e.g. in a car wash or by towing).
DISTRONIC is deactivated automatically when stopping: R on flat stretches of road or on downhill gradients when the vehicle is stationary R while the vehicle is still moving on uphill gradients, to prevent the vehicle from unexpectedly rolling back when DISTRONIC is deactivated If DISTRONIC is deactivated, you will hear a warning tone.

ADS (Adaptive Damping System) General notes ADS is continuously electronically controlled. It adapts the damping characteristics to the current operating and driving situation. Damping is controlled separately for each wheel. This increases driving safety and tire comfort.

G Warning Blind Spot Assist monitors certain areas in the immediate vicinity of your vehicle. Vehicles that approach and drive past at high speeds are not detected. There is no display and no warning. If the lanes are very wide, it may not be possible to monitor the complete width of the neighboring lane.

Differential lock General notes i Differential locks are available only in vehicles with the Off-Road Pro engineering package. Your vehicle is equipped with the following: R A differential lock for the transfer box: this controls the balance between the front and rear axles.
Automatic mode Use automatic mode ; for all driving situations, including driving off-road or when fording. In automatic mode, the differential locks are engaged and disengaged according to driving requirements. This guarantees sufficient traction for most driving situations with unrestricted vehicle steerability.
Message in the multifunction display Diff. Lock System Overheated - Wait briefly. The differential lock system has overheated and briefly disengaged. X Continue driving.
