Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified load limit as indicated on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver’s door B-pillar. Overloading the tires can overheat them, possibly causing a blowout. Overloading the tires can also result in handling or steering problems, or brake failure.
i The recommended tire inflation pressures for your vehicle can be found on R the Tire and Loading Information placard located on the driver’s door B-pillar ( Y page 227) R the tire inflation pressure label on the inside of the fuel filler flap The tire inflation pressures are not listed in the Operator’s Manual.

position N . Try to keep the vehicle under control by corrective steering action. i For information on driving with snow chains, see “Snow chains” ( Y page 243). Road salts and chemicals can adversely affect braking efficiency. Increased pedal force may become necessary to produce the normal brake effect.
Brakes Downhill grades ! When driving down long and steep grades, relieve the load on the brakes by shifting into a lower gear to use the engine’s braking power. This helps prevent overheating of the brakes and reduces wear. When using the engine’s braking power, a drive wheel may not spin for an extended period of time, e.
Only install brake pads and use brake fluid recommended by Mercedes-Benz. G Warning! If other than recommended brake pads are installed, or other than recommended brake fluid is used, the braking properties of the vehicle can be degraded to an extent that safe braking is substantially impaired.
The brakes may produce a squeaking-type noise depending on the R vehicle speed R brake force applied R ambient conditions, e.g. temperature and humidity As with any brake system, the wear of individual brake system components such as brake pads or disks strongly depends on your driving style and the conditions under which you operate the vehicle.
For more information, see “Driving through water” ( Y page 251). Off-road driving G Warning! Do not load items on the basic carrier bars. It may cause instability during some maneuvers which could result in an accident. Drive slowly in unknown terrain.
! Observe the following during off-road driving: R Keep doors, tailgate, windows, and tilt/ sliding sunroof closed whenever driving off-road. R Adjust vehicle speed to condition of terrain. The more uneven, rutty and steeper the terrain, the lower the speed should be.
Driving in steep terrain Slope angle : Overhang angle, front ; Overhang angle, rear Vehicles with steel suspension : : 21 ; 27° 22° 26° Vehicles with air suspension program : : 21 ; Raised level 31.
The 4-ETS recognizes the situation and limits the torque for the front wheels by braking them. Simultaneously the torque for the rear wheels is increased. Driving across a hilltop Decelerate just ahead of a hilltop (do not shift automatic transmission into neutral position N ), to prevent the vehicle from speeding up too much after climbing a hill.
! Never accelerate before driving into the water. The bow wave could force water into the engine and auxiliary equipment, thus damaging them. R Drive through the water slowly and at a constant speed. R Do not stop vehicle while immersed in water, and do not shut off the engine.
When driving on sand, observe the following rules: R Vehicles with air suspension program: Set the raised level ( Y page 156). R Avoid high engine speeds. R Shift automatic transmission into a gear range that is appropriate for the terrain. R In sandy soil, drive at a steady speed as conditions permit.
R Check for brush or branches caught in the underbody. ! Brush or branches could increase the possibility of a fire, as well as cut fuel and/ or brake lines, puncture rubber bellows of the axles or drive shafts.
The lowest value listed must be selected when determining how the vehicle and trailer are loaded. R The tongue weight at the hitch ball must be added to the rear axle weight to prevent exceeding the rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). The GAWR is indicated on the certification label located on the driver’s door B-pillar ( Y page 227).
X Close all doors and the tailgate. X Attach the trailer. X Plug in all electrical connectors. i Vehicles with vehicle level control: When you are towing a trailer, the vehicle level always remains in the highway setting.
Avoid riding the brakes, thus overheating the vehicle and trailer brakes (if so equipped). R If the engine coolant rises to an extremely high temperature when the air conditioning is on, turn off the air conditioning system.
