The ESC recognizes that the vehicle deviates from the direction of travel as intended by the driver.
Switching the ESC off or on (except E 63 AMG) G Warning! The ESC should not be switched off during normal driving other than in the circumstances described below. Disabling the system will reduce vehicle stability in driving maneuvers. Do not switch off the ESC when a spare wheel is mounted.
E 63 AMG Switching ESC SPORT on or off G Warning! ESC SPORT should not be switched on during normal driving. Switching ESC SPORT on will result in the following: R no restriction to engine torque R sy.
ESC SPORT switches off automatically when you turn off the engine. When starting the engine, the ESC is activated automatically. Switching the ESC off or on G Warning! The ESC should not be switched off during normal driving.
G Warning! When the ESC OFF warning lamp å is on, the ESC is switched off. When the ESC warning lamp ä and the ESC OFF warning lamp å are on continuously, the ESC is not operational due to a malfunction. If no damage on major assemblies, fuel system, and engine mount can be determined: X Start the engine in the usual manner. Parking G Warning! Do not park this vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as grass, hay or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system.
X Shift the automatic transmission into park position P ( Y page 116). X Engage the parking brake. i Always engage the parking brake in addition to shifting the automatic transmission into park position P .
! Allow the engine to warm up under low load use. Do not place full load on the engine until the operating temperature has been reached. Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an extended period when driving off on slippery road surfaces.
i Shifting the automatic transmission out of park position P is only possible with the brake pedal depressed. Without the brake pedal depressed, the gear selector lever can be moved up or down, but the parking pawl remains engaged, not allowing shifting to occur.
G Warning! Keep in mind that turning off the engine alone only will shift the automatic transmission into neutral position N automatically. Always shift the automatic transmission into park position P before turning off the engine. Otherwise the vehicle could roll away which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
Shifting procedure The automatic transmission selects individual gears automatically, depending on R the selected gear range ( Y page 120) R the selected program mode: C / S ( Y page 120) or M (E 63 A.
Effect B Park position Shift the automatic transmission into park position P only when the vehicle is stopped. The park position is not intended to serve as a brake when the vehicle is parked. Rather, the driver should always engage the parking brake in addition to shifting the automatic transmission into park position P to secure the vehicle.
Rocking the vehicle Rocking the vehicle by shifting the automatic transmission directly between drive position D and reverse gear R can help free a vehicle stuck in mud or snow.

MOExtended system The MOExtended system allows you to continue driving your vehicle even if there is a total loss of pressure in one or more tires. You may only use the MOExtended system in conjunction with the tire pressure loss warning system ( Y page 232) or the Advanced TPMS ( Y page 233).
Do not allow your tires to wear down too far. Adhesion properties on wet roads are sharply reduced at tread depths of less than 1 / 8 in (3 mm). Treadwear indicators (TWI) are required by law. These indicators are located in six places on the tread circumference and become visible at a tread depth of approximately 1 / 16 in (1.
tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1 1 / 2 ) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, h.
G Warning! Have the tightening torque checked after changing a wheel. Wheels could become loose if not tightened with a torque of 96 lb-ft (130 Nm). Only use genuine Mercedes-Benz wheel bolts specified for your vehicle’s rims. Tire rotation can be performed on vehicles with tires of the same dimension all around.

Depressing the brake pedal periodically when traveling at length on salt-strewn roads can bring road-salt-impaired braking efficiency back to normal. If the vehicle is parked after being driven on salt-treated roads, the braking efficiency should be tested as soon as possible after driving is resumed.
When using the engine’s braking power, a drive wheel may not spin for an extended period of time, e.g. on slippery road surfaces. This may cause serious damage to the drivetrain which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.
