Occupant safety 47 R if the system determines that air bag deployment can offer additional protection to that provided by the seat belt R depending on whether the seat belt is in use R independently of the side impact air bags and/or the window curtain air bags The front air bags in this vehicle have been designed to inflate in two stages.
Occupant safety 48 R independently of the front air bags R independently of the ETDs The side impact air bags are not deployed in side impacts which do not exceed the sys- tem’s deployment threshold.
Occupant safety 49 i If your seat, including the trim cover and cushion, needs to be serviced in any way, take the vehicle to an authorized Mer- cedes-Benz Center.
Occupant safety 50 If the front passenger front air bag is deployed, the rate of inflation will be influ- enced by: R the rate of relevant vehicle deceleration as assessed by the air bag control unit R the front passenger’s weight category as identified by the OCS.
Occupant safety 51 R While seated, an occupant should not position him/herself in such a way as to cause the occupant’s weight to be lifted from the seat bottom as this may result in the OCS being unable to correctly approximate the occupant’s weight cat- egory.
Occupant safety 52 likely to hit the interior of the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt. The air bags can only protect as intended if the occupants are properly wearing their seat belts.
Occupant safety 53 too much force to the ribs or abdomen, which could severely injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen. Adjust the seat belt so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder (it should not touch the neck).
Occupant safety 54 your seat belt properly buckled. Without your seat belt buckled, you are much more likely to hit the interior of the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt.
Occupant safety 55 X If necessary, adjust the seat belt to the cor- rect height. X If necessary, tighten the lap portion to a snug fit by pulling shoulder portion up. Seat belt outlet height adjustment 1 Seat belt height adjuster 2 Release button X Raising: Slide seat belt height adjuster 1 upward.

The child restraint system’s metal parts, for example, could become very hot, and the child could be burned on these parts. G Warning! Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the passenger compartment unless they are firmly secured in place.
Occupant safety 61 A child’s risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and/or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint. Children too big for a toddler restraint must ride in seats using regular seat belts.
Occupant safety 62 Once top tether anchorage hook 3 is attached, the child restraint itself can be secured. Driving safety systems 65 The driving safety systems described in this section cannot reduce these risks or pre- vent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. They cannot increase brak- ing or steering efficiency beyond that afforded by the condition of the vehicle brakes and tires or the traction afforded.
Driving safety systems 66 For more information, see “What to do if …?” ( Y page 291). BAS G Observe Safety notes, see page 64. The Brake Assist System (BAS) operates in emergency situations. If you apply the brakes very quickly, the BAS automatically provides full brake boost, thereby potentially reducing the braking distance.

Tires and wheels 226 Uniform Tire Quality Grading Stand- ards The Uniform Tire Quality Grading is a U.S. Government requirement designed to give drivers consistent and reliable information regarding tire performance. Tire manufactur- ers are required to grade tires based on three performance factors: treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance.
Tires and wheels 227 for the winter season to ensure normal bal- anced handling characteristics. On packed snow, they can reduce your stopping distance compared to summer tires. Stopping dis- tance, however, is still considerably greater than when the road is not covered with snow or ice.
Tires and wheels 228 Bar Another metric unit for air pressure. There are 14.5038 pounds per square inch (psi) to 1 bar; there are 100 kilopascals (kPa) to 1 bar. Bead The tire bead contains steel wires wrapped by steel cords that hold the tire onto the rim.
Tires and wheels 229 Production options weight The combined weight of those installed reg- ular production options weighing over 5 lbs (2.3 kilograms) in excess of those standard items which they repl.
Tires and wheels 230 Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards A tire information system that provides con- sumers with ratings for a tire’s traction, tem- perature and treadwear. Ratings are deter- mined by tire manufacturers using U.S. government testing procedures.

Driving instructions 234 or accelerate. This could lead to accidents and injury. Power assistance G Warning! There is no power assistance for the steer- ing and the service brake when the engine is not running. Steering and braking requires significantly more effort and you could lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident as a result.
Driving instructions 235 Salt-covered roads G Warning! A layer of salt on the brake discs and the brake linings may cause a delay in the brak- ing effect, resulting in a significantly increased braking distance, which could lead to an accident.
Driving instructions 236 take several hundred miles of driving until they provide optimum braking efficiency. Until that time, you may need to use increased brake pedal pressure while brak- ing. Please be aware of this and adjust your driving and braking accordingly during this break-in period.
Driving instructions 237 Driving abroad If you plan to drive the vehicle outside the U.S. or Canada, you should request dealer net- work information for your destination from any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
