NOTE l In extr emely cold weather or after the vehicle has not been driven in several days, let the engine warm up without operating the accelerator . l Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should be started without use of the accelerator .
Black plate (129,1) Brake System q Foot Brake Y our Mazda has power-assisted brakes that adjus t automati cally through normal use. Should powe r-assist fail, you can stop by applying greater force than normal to the brake pedal. But the dist ance required to stop will be greater than usual.
Black plate (130,1) CAUTION Ø Do not drive with your foot held on the clutch pedal or brak e pedal, or hold the clutch pedal depre ssed halfway unnec essarily. Doing so could result in the following: Ø The clutc h and brake parts will wear out more quickly.
Black plate (131,1) Setting the parking brake Depress the brake pedal and then firmly pull the parking brake lever fully upwards with sufficient force to hold the vehicle in a stationar y position. Releasing the park ing brake Depress the brake pedal and pull the parking brake lever upwards, then press the release button.
Black plate (132,1) CAUTION In addition, the effectiven ess of the braking m ay dimini sh so you may need to depress the brake ped al mor e strongly than normal to stop the vehicle. q Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) The ABS control unit continuously monitors the speed of each wheel.
Black plate (133,1) q Electronic Brake Force Distribution System W arning If the electronic brake force distrib ution control unit determin es that some components are operat ing incorrectl y , the control unit may illuminate the brake system war ning light and the ABS warning ligh t on simultaneously .
Black plate (134,1) Manual T ransaxle Operation q Manual T ransaxle Shift Pattern Neutral position The shift pattern of the transaxle is conventional, as show n. Depress the clutch pedal all the way down while shiftin g; then release it slowly . Y our vehicle is equipped with a device to prevent shifting to R (rever se) by mistake.
Black plate (135,1) q Recommendations for Shifting Upshifting For normal acceleration, we recommend these shift points. Gear V ehicle speed 1 to 2 25 km/h (15 mph) 2 to 3 42 km/h (26 mph) 3 to 4 60 km.
Black plate (136,1) Automatic T ransaxle Controls Indicates that you must depress the brake pedal to shift (The ignition must be switched to ACC or ON).
Black plate (137,1) q T ransaxle Ranges The shift lever must be in P or N to operate the starter . P (Park) P locks the transaxle and prevents the front whee ls from rotating.
Black plate (138,1) q Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) Active Adap tive Shift (AAS) automatically controls the trans axle shift points to best suit the road conditions and driver input .
Black plate (139,1) T o return to autom atic shif t mode, shift the lever from M to D. NOTE l If you change to manual shift mode when the vehicle is stopped, the gear will shift to M1. l If you change to manual shift mode without depr essing the accelerator pedal when driving in D range, 5th gear , the gear will shift to M4.
Black plate (140,1) Shifting Manually Shifting up (M1 → M2 → M3 → M4 → M5) T o shift up to a higher gear, move the shift lever back ( ) once. NOTE l When driving slowly , the gears may not shift up. l In manual shift mode, gears do not shift up automatically .
Black plate (141,1) Second gear fixed mode When the selector lever is moved back ( ) while the vehicle speed is about 10 km/h (6 mph) or less, the transaxle is set in the second gear fixed mode. The gear is fixed in second while in this mode for easier acc eleration from a stop and driving on slippery roads such as snow-cover ed roads.
Black plate (142,1) Shift gear (shifting) speed limit For each gear position while in the manual mode, the speed limit is set as follo ws: When the selector lever is operated within the range of the speed limit, the gear is shifted. Shift up The gear does not shift up while the vehicle speed is low er than the speed limit.
Black plate (143,1) Recommendations for shifting Upshifting For norm al acceleration and cruising, we recommend these shift points. Gear V ehicle speed M1 to M2 25 km/h (15 mph) M2 to M3 41 km/h (25 m.
Black plate (144,1) Power Steering Power steering is only operable when the engine is running. If the engine is o ff or if the power steering system is inoper able, you can still steer, but it requires more physical effort. If the steering feels stiffer than usual during normal driving, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
Black plate (145,1) Cruise Control í W ith cruise control, you can set and automatically maintain any speed of more than about 30 km/h (19 mph). WARNING Do not use the cruise control under the following conditions: Using the cruise control under the following conditions is dangerou s and could result in loss of vehicle control.
Black plate (146,1) 3. Set the cruise contr ol by pressing the cruise con trol SET /SET - switch up or down at the desired speed. The cruise con trol is set at the moment the cruise con trol SET /SET - switch is pressed up or down. Release the accelerator pedal simult aneously .

Black plate (150,1) CAUTION Ø The DSC may not ope rate correctly unless the following are obser ved: Ø Use tire s of the cor rect size specified for your Mazda on all four wheels . Ø Use tire s of the sa me manufacturer, brand and tre ad pattern on all four wheels .
Black plate (151,1) NOTE l When DSC is on and you attempt to fr ee the vehicle when it is stuck, or drive it out of fr eshly fallen snow , the TCS (part of the DSC system) will activate. Depressing the accelerator will not increase engine power and fr eeing the vehicle may be difficult.
Black plate (152,1) Tir e Pressure Monitoring System í The tir e pressure monitoring system (TPMS) monitors the pressure for each tire. If tire pressure is too low in one or more tires, the system will infor m the driver via the warning ligh t in the instrument panel and by the warning beep sound.
Black plate (153,1) CAUTION Each tire, including the spare (if provid ed), shou ld be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufactu rer on the vehicle placard or tire infla tion pressu re label.

Black plate (207,1) Signals from an FM transmitter are similar to beams of light because they do not bend around corners, but they do reflect. Unlike AM signals, FM signals cannot travel beyond the horizon. Therefore, FM stations cannot be received at the great distances possible wi th AM reception.
Black plate (208,1) Strong signal noise This occurs very close to a transmitter tower . The broadcast signals are extremely strong, so the result is noise and sound breakup at the radio receive r .
