Section 1: Installation Thank you for buying a Lowranc e ® sonar! Your unit is a high quality sonar designed for both professi onal and novice fishermen. All Lowrance sonars have an autom atic mode that finds and disp lays the bottom, fish, underwater structure and more – right out of the box.
installation m ethods is right for your boat. Us e extreme care i f mounting the transducer inside the hull, b ecause once it is ep oxied into position, the transduc er usually cannot be rem oved.
NOTE: Some aluminum boats with strak es or ribs on the outsid e of the hull create l arge amounts of tur bulence at high s peed. These b oats typically hav e large outboard m otors capable of propel ling the boat at speeds faster than 35 mph. Typically, a good transom loc ation on aluminum boats is between the ribs closest to the engine.
How low should you go? For most situations, yo u should install your Skimm er transducer so that its centerline is level with the bott om of the boat hull. This wil l usually give you the best c ombination of smooth water flow an d protection fr om bangs and bumps.
However, the shoot-thru -hull installation does have its drawbacks. First, some loss of s ensitivity does occ ur, even on the best hulls. This varies from hull to hull, even from different i nstallations on t he same hull. This is caused by differenc es in hull lay-up and construction.
If the transducer's face isn't parallel with th e ground, remove th e transducer and ratc hets from the bracket. P lace the ratchets into t he holes in the bracket with the let ter "B" aligned with the dot stam ped in the bracket.
Mark the center of each slot f or the mounting screw pilot ho les. You will drill one hol e in the center of each slot. Drill the holes using the #29 bit (for the #10 screws). Position transducer mount on tr ansom and mark mounting holes. Side view shown at left and seen from above at right.
Align transducer centerline with hull bottom and attach to t ransom. 6. Route the transducer cab le through or over the transom t o the sonar unit. Mak e sure to leave some slack in the cable at the tra nsd ucer . If possible, route the transducer cable away from other wiring on the boat.
Attach motor mounting bracket to transducer. 2. Slide the adjustable strap sup pli ed with the T MB-S through the slot in the transducer brack et and wrap it ar ound the trolling motor. Position the transduc er to aim straight down when the m otor is in the water.
Transducer Orientation and Fish Arches If you do not get good fish arches on your display, it could be beca use the transducer is n ot parallel with the ground when the boat is at r est in the water or at slow trolling spee ds. If the arch slopes up – but not ba ck down – then the front of the transducer is to o high and needs to be lowered.
hours, fill the rem aining space wit h polyester res in. When the j ob is finished, the hull is watertigh t and structurally sound. Remember, the sonar signal must pass through solid fiberglass. Any air bub bles in the fiberglass or the epo xy will reduce or eliminat e the sonar signals.
If you can't get a n acceptable bo ttom signal, try turn ing up the sensitivity by three or five keystr okes and then move the transducer aro und o nce m ore.
100 grit sandpaper. The sanded hull area should b e about 1-1/2 times the diameter of the transducer. The s urface of the hull must b e flat so the entire transducer face is in c ontact with the hull prior to bonding. After sanding, c lean the hull and transducer with rub bing alcohol to remove any sandin g debris.
the transducer should b e parallel with the hu ll, with a minim um amount of epox y between the hull an d transducer. 4. Apply a weight, such as a brick, to hold the transducer in place while the epoxy cures. Be carefu l not to bump the transducer while the epoxy is wet.
Power and transducer connections for the X51 Pro sonar unit (direct battery connection shown). CAUTION: Do not use this pr oduct without a 3 -amp fuse wired into the power cable! Failure to use a 3 -amp fuse will void your warranty. This unit has reverse polarity protec tion.
Bracket Installation Mount the unit in any conve nient location, provid ed there is clearance when it’s tilted for th e best viewing angle. You should also ma ke sure there is eno ugh room behind the unit to attac h the power/tra nsducer cable. (See t he following draw ings, which show the dimensions of a mounted X5 1 Pr o.
slack for tilting and turning the unit and attach ing the connector. (The snug fit of the push-on waterpr oof connector requires some force to attach.) Align the bracket over the cable hol e with the cable sl ots facing away from you and fit the cable through th e slots.
Installing the Batterie s Release the latch on the front of the case. Open the case a nd install eight AA batteries in the battery compartment. Aft er installing the batteries, plug the sonar unit's power cable into the battery compartment socket.
