1. Introduction Thank you f or buying the Klimax Twin, the second member of the Klimax amplifier family and the best amplifiers we make. Lik e the Klimax Solo the K limax Twin uses the latest t echnology and exemplifies our constant endeav our to make ever better sounding pr oducts.
2. Wha t is it? The Klimax Twin is a tw o channel power amplifier designed f or use in multi amplifier and multi channel audio and audio/video systems.
3. How does the Klimax w ork? In most power amplifiers the pow er supply comprises a large tr ansformer , a rectifier and reser voir capacitors, of ten as large as the transformer .
What is switch mode? In a switch mode power supply the inc oming mains is filtered then rectified to generat e a very high voltage dc (direct current) supply . This is usually about 300 to 350 Volts dc , which is far too high to operate audio circuitry direc tly , and is still connec ted directly to the incoming mains supply .
So what’ s the problem? The first problem is that this is a lot more c omplicated than a mains transformer (a f ew k ilos of copper and iron), a rectifier and some large capacitors.
Some assor ted facts The transf ormer in the Klimax is less than 40mm (1.5 inches) cube. At 50/60 Hz it could deliver about 5 W atts. In the K limax it can deliver 1000 Watts . The reservoir capacitors in the Klimax are about the size of a thimble but give bett er filtering than ones the size of a beer can used in other very powerful amplifiers.

The audio cir cuitry At Linn because we striv e for continuous impr ovement in ev er ything we do we use appropriat e technologies to achieve our goals . There have been man y fine amplifier designs over the history of audio. Some use valv es (tubes), some use bipolar transistors, some MOSFET s.
T o achieve the performance and power output w e use three chips per channel, and like the Klimax Solo the Klimax T win is direct coupled with no capacitors in the signal path. Combined with a slightly modified Klimax Solo power supply we ha ve achiev ed , as we know you will hear , true audiophile per formance.
Output current and pr otection A commonly asked question about a power amplifier conc erns its maximum output current. There is some good reason behind this question. There is always some trade off betw een output power , 'specmanship', protection and cost in a power amplifier .
The Klimax Twin, lik e all Linn amplifiers, is specified into a 4 Ohm load. We don't do this t o claim a bigger output power , but to show that our amplifiers are int ended and fully specified for operation into 4 Ohm loudspeakers. Most Linn loudspeakers have nominally 4 Ohms input impedance.
4. Installation The compactness of the Klimax T win makes it ver y easy to install and makes possible high power multi- amplifier systems which would be impractical with con ventionally designed amplifiers of similar pow er , because of their size and weight.
When operating , the fan draws cool air in through the back of the amplifier , and blows it along the heat exchanger until it exits through the fr ont, top and bottom. The amplifier is fully protected against ov er heating , but this is only for protection and should never operate in normal use, whatever your 'normal use' is.
Mains supply The Klimax Twin has an aut omatic internal mains voltage swit ch. This allows it to operate from 90 V ac to 260 V ac. With a mains supply below 140 V ac two seconds after switching on the amplifier the power supply switches to low range , with a just audible click, and remains there as long as power is applied .
F itting in separate mains wiring spurs for the sour ces and pow er amplifiers is not to isolate them from the mains distortion present in the rest of the house; it's to reduce ho w much of the m.
Signal sensing In the absence of a music input signal the Klimax Twin r everts to a low power standb y mode after 10 minutes. The signal detector is very sensitive and waits about one second before po wering up the amplifier to be certain the signal is real, not just noise.
Inputs and outputs The Klimax Twin has both unbalanc ed and balanced inputs, selec ted by a switch on the back panel. Use the appropriate one to suit y our choice of preamplifier and cabling . The LED will indicate when the unbalanced inputs are selected.
5. Opera tion This is the easiest bit. The blue light will be dim when power is first applied , then remain dimmed with the Klimax T win in standby mode. When a signal is detected the light brightens up as the amplifier is enabled. If the amplifier needs to protect itself it will shut down entirely f or a few seconds and dim the light.
