Intr oduction The EtherF ast 10/100 Auto-Sensing series of hubs from Linksys is the fastest, most economical wa y to build or expand an enterprise 100Mbps netw ork! Ready to r un right out of the box,.
About Fast Ethernet As the demand for desktop video, multimedia dev elopment, imaging, and other speed-intensiv e applications continues to rise, the need for high per- formance, f ault tolerant LAN technology will become more critical.
Planning Y our Network The rules that go vern ho w nodes and hubs are distributed across a netw ork are important to ensure the integ rity of your data. Cab ling specif ications, distance limits, and other topology rules must be follo wed in order to a void collisions or data loss.
Installing the Hub Carefully remo ve the hub from its packaging. Mak e sure that you receiv ed all of the items listed belo w . If an y items are missing or damaged , contact your Linksys dealer for replacement part(s).
LED Indicators P ower Indicates that the hub is recei ving po wer . 100/10 Col Indicates if collisions are being encountered at 100Mbps and/or 10Mbps. Some collisions are normal. If your netw ork seems to be experienc- ing high collision lev els, verify that your cabling is good , and that there are no cabling coils, cross-o vers, or breaks.
Optional Fiber Optic Expansion Module The Auto-Sensing 16 and 24-P or t rack mountable hubs each come with a f iber optic expansion slot w hich accepts an optional 100BaseFX f iber optic module for connecting to high-speed f iber cabling.
Connecting the A uto-Sensing Hubs to Other Hubs, Switches, or Routers Like most hubs, the Auto-Sensing Hubs can be uplinked to 10Mbps or 100Mbps hubs, stackable hubs, s witches, or routers.
Uplinking the 5-P or t Hub The EtherF ast 5-P or t Auto-Sensing Hub has a special switched uplink port with it’ s own distance e xtension capabilities. If you are mixing 10Mbps and 100Mbps hardware on y our 5-Port hub, the hub can be uplinked to other 100Mbps hubs at a distance of 5 meters (16.
P owering On the Hub Desktop Model The hub comes with both a po wer adapter and in some instances, an A C electrical cord. Plug the po wer adapter’ s plug into the hub’ s po wer jack. Plug the pro vided AC electrical cord into the po w er adapter .
Appendix T wisted P air Cabling There are different grades, or categories, of twisted-pair cab ling. Categor y 5 is the most reliable and widel y compatible, and is required for F ast Ethernet. Y ou can buy Category 5 cabling that is pre-made, or y ou can cut and crimp your o wn.
12 How T o Install An Add-On Module F ollo w the follo wing steps to install the add-on modules in the EtherF ast 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hub ( EF AH16 or EF AH24 ).
Fiber Optic Modules Six different F iber Optic modules are av ailable for the rack mountable Auto-Sensing hubs (EF AH16 and EF AH24): FFOSC1 : 100BaseFX 1-P or t Transcei ver Module (SC) FFOSC2 : 100B.
A maximum of 2 T ransceivers can be connected to gether in one segment. When tw o hubs are connected via T ransceivers to gether, the same rule of cascading tw o 100Mb hubs applies to them. T o cascade another hub to these tw o hubs (using RJ-45), a switch or repeater must be used.
The follo wing illustration is an example of ho w to connect four Rack Mountable EtherF ast 10/100 Auto-Sensing hubs together using f iber optic cabling. Notice that the hubs at the top and the bottom are equipped with 100BaseFX 1-P or t Distance Extender modules, while the tw o hubs in the middle ha ve 100BaseFX 2- P or t Trancei ver Modules.
16 100BaseTX Distance Extender Module This module has a special distance extending port that sends data at 100Mbps o ver regular 100BaseTX Cate gory 5 cabling. The distance exten- der module sends your data up to 100 meter s (328 feet). This module is ideal for connecting to f ile ser vers or uplinking to remote hubs.
The follo wing illustration is an example of ho w to connect four EtherF ast 10/100 Auto-Sensing hubs together using the Single-P ort 100BaseTX Distance Extender Module. Note that, without the distance extender mod- ule, the maximum distance betw een two uplinked hubs is 5 meters (16.
Specifications Models EF AH05W EF AH08W EF AH16W EF AH16 EF AH24 Standards IEEE 802.3 IEEE 802.3u Po r t s 5, 8, 16, or 24, depending on model; 16 and 24-P or t models each also include tw o 100BaseFX.
