Buttons A few simple buttons make it easy to turn iP od touch on or o , and adjust the volume. On/O Sleep/W ake Button When you ’ re not actively using iP od touch, you can lock it to turn o the display and save the batt er y . When iP od touch is locked, nothing happens if you touch the screen.
Home Button Pre ss the Home button at an y time to go to the Home screen, which contains y our iP od touch apps. T ap any app icon t o get star ted. T o see apps you’ve r ecently used , double-click the Home button (iP od touch 3rd generation or lat er).
iP od touch Apps The follo wing apps are included with iP od touch: Note: App functionalit y and av ailability may var y , depending on the country or region where you purchase and use iP od touch. Music Listen to your songs , audiobooks, and podcasts.
Safari Browse w ebsites over Wi-F i. Rotate iPod t ouch sideways for widescreen viewing . Double-tap to zoom in or out—Safari automatically ts the webpage c olumn to the iP od touch screen for easy reading . Open multiple pages. Sync bookmarks with Safari or Microsoft Internet Explorer on your computer .
Calculator In the Utilities folder . A dd, subtract, multiply , and divide. Rotate iPod touch sidewa ys to use expanded scientic functions. See Chapter 19 , “ Calcula tor ,” on page 13 3 .
Status Icons The icons in the status bar at the t op of the screen give information about iP od touch: Status icon What it means Wi-Fi* Sho ws that iP od touch is connected to the Internet over a Wi-Fi network. The more bars, the stronger the connection.

Setting Up iP od touch Before you can use iP od touch, y ou must set it up in iT unes. During setup, you can create a new Apple acc ount or specify an existing Apple accoun t to enable purchases with iP od touch. ( The iT unes Store may not be a vailable in all countries or r egions.
Connecting to the Int ernet iP od touch connects to the Internet via Wi-F i networks. i P od touch can join AirP ort and other Wi-Fi networks at home , at work, or at Wi-F i hotspots around the w orld.
Setting Up MobileMe Accounts T o use MobileMe on i P od touch, you need t o add an account with your MobileMe account settings. W hen setting up the account, you can choose which MobileM e ser vices y.
When setting up the account, you can choose which Exchange services you want to use with iP od touch: Mail  Contacts  Calendars  Ser vices you turn on are sync ed automatically ov er the air without having to connect iP od touch to your comput er .
Setting Up Other Accounts Choose Other Accounts to set up other accoun ts for mail (such as POP), contacts (such as LDAP or CardDA V ), or calendars (such as CalDA V ). Contact your service provider or system administrator t o get the account settings you need .
Basics 3 Using Apps The high-resolution Multi-T ouch screen and simple nger gesture s make it easy to use iP od touch apps. Opening and Switching A pps Y ou open an app on iPod t ouch by tapping its icon on the Home screen. Return to the Home screen: Press the Home button below the display .
View the most recently used apps (iP od touch 3rd generation or later): Double-click the Home button. The four most rec ently used app are shown at the bottom of the scr een. Flick left to see more apps. Note: On iP od touch 2nd generation, double-clicking the Home button per forms the action specied by the Home Button setting .
Flick to scr oll quickly . Y ou can wait for the scrolling to c ome to a stop , or touch anywhere on the screen to stop it immediately . T ouching the screen to stop scrolling w on’ t choose or activate anything . T o quick ly scroll to the top of a list , webpage, or email, just tap the sta tus bar .
Zooming In or Out When viewing photos, webpages, email, or maps , you can zoom in and out. Pinch your ngers together or apart. F or photos and webpages, you can double-tap (tap twice quickly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. For maps, double-tap to zoom in and tap once with two ngers to zoom out.
Contacts  Stocks  Photos  Calculator  Movies viewed in V ideos and Y ouT ube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps also appear only in landscape orientation.
Move an ic on to another screen: While arranging icons, drag an icon t o the side of the screen. Create addition al Home screens: While arranging icons, ick to the right-most Home screen and drag an icon to the right edge of the scr een until a new screen appears.
iP od touch creates a new f older that includes the two icons , and shows the folder’ s name. Y ou can tap the name eld and enter a di eren t name. Y ou can also create folders within iT unes. Create a f older using iT unes: With iP od touch connected to your comput er , select iP od touch in the Devices list in iT unes .
Adding Wallpaper Y ou can set an image or phot o as w allpape r for the L ock sc reen. On iP od touch 3rd generation or later , you can also set wallpaper f or your Home screen. Y ou can choose an image that came with iP od touch, or a photo synced to iP od touch from your computer .
As you type, each letter appears above your thumb or nger . If you touch the wrong key , you can slide your nger to the correct key . The letter isn ’t entered until y ou release your nger from the key . Delete the previous character T ap .
Dictionar y F or many languages , iP od touch has dictionaries to help you type. The appropriate dictionar y is activated when you select a supported k eyboard . F or a list of suppor ted languages , see www .apple.com/ipodtouch/s pecs.html. iP od touch uses the active dictionar y to suggest corrections or complete the wor d you ’ re typing.
Editing—C ut, C opy , and P aste The touchscreen makes it easy to make changes t o text you’v e entered . An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the insertion point precisely where you need it. Grab points on selected text let you quickly select more or less text.
Intern ational Keyboar ds Int ernatio nal keybo ards a llow y ou t o ent er te xt in man y di eren t lan guages , in cluding langu ages th at ar e writt en fro m right to le ft. If y ou wan t to ente r text i n other languages, you can use Settings to make additional keyboards available when you type.
Enter facemarks Using the Japanese Kana keyboard, tap the “^_^” key . Using the Japanese Romaji keyboard (QWERT Y-Japanese layout), tap the Number key , then tap the “^_^” key . Using the Chinese (Simplied or T raditional) Pin yin or ( T raditional) Zhuyin keyb oards, tap the Symbols key , then tap the “^_^” key.
Enter handwritten Simplied or T raditional Chinese Write Chinese characters directly on the screen with y our nger . As you write character strokes , iPod t ouch recognizes them and shows matching char acters in a list, with the closest match at the top .
Keyboar d Layouts Y ou can use Settings to set the keyboard layouts for software and hardw are keyboards. The av ailable layouts depend on the keyboard language. Select a keyboard layout: In Settings, choose G eneral > Keyboard > International Keyboards, then selec t a keyboard.
Searching Y ou can search many apps on iP od touch, including M ail, Calendar , Music, Videos, Notes, and Contacts. Y ou can search an individual app, or search all apps at once using Search. Go to Search: On the main Home screen, ick left to right or press the Home button.
V oice Contr ol V oice Con trol (iP od touch 3rd generation or later) lets y ou control iP od music playback using voice commands . Note: V oice Contr ol may not be available in all language s. T o use V oice Con trol with iP od touch 3rd generation, you need Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic, or a compatible accessory with a microphone.
V oice Con trol normally expects you to speak voice commands in the language tha t ’ s set for iP od touch (the setting in General > International > Language). V oice Control settings let you change the language for s peaking voice commands. Some languages are av ailable in di eren t dialects or accents.
Bluetooth Status The Bluetooth icon appears in the iP od touch status bar at the t op of the screen: Â or : Bluetooth is on and a device is connected to iP od touch. ( The color depends on the current color of the status bar .) Â : Bluetooth is on but no device is connected.
Important: The iP od touch batt er y may drain instead of char ge if iPod t ouch is connected to a computer that’ s turned o or is in sleep or standby mode . If you charge the battery while syncing or using iP od touch, it may take longer to charge .
Setting a passcode turns on data protection (iP od touch 3rd generation or later). Data protection uses your passcode as the key for encrypting mail messages and their attachments stored on iP od touch. (Data protection may also be used by some apps available in the A pp Store.
Cleaning iP od touch Clean iP od touch immediately if it comes in c ontact with any contaminants tha t may cause stains , such as ink, dyes , makeup, dir t, food , oils, and lotions. T o clean i P od touch, disconnect all cables and turn o i P od touch (press and hold the On/O Sleep/W ake button, then slide the onscreen slider).
Syncing and F ile Sharing 4 About Syncing Syncing copies inf ormation from your computer or online accoun t to iP od touch, then keeps the information “in sync” by copying change s made in one location to the other .
Syncing with iT unes Y ou can set iT unes to sync any or all of the f ollowing: Music  Movies  T V Shows  Games and apps downloaded from the App St ore  Music videos  P odcasts  Books and .
Y ou can set iPod t ouch to sync with only a por tion of what’ s on your computer . F or example, you might want to sync only certain music playlists, or only unwatched video podcasts. Important: Y ou should be logged in to your own user acc ount on your computer before connecting iP od touch.
Select “Con vert higher bit rate songs to 1 28 kbps AAC ” if you want iT unes to conv er t larger audio le s to the standard iT unes audio f ormat during syncing. Select “Manually manage music and videos” to turn o automatic syncing in the Music and Video settings panes.
Photos P ane On a Mac, you can sync phot os with Aper ture or iPhoto 4.0.3 or lat er , and videos with iPhoto 5 or later . On a PC, you can sync photos with Adobe P hotoshop Elements 8.0 or later . Y ou can also sync photos and videos from any f older on your Mac or PC that contains images .
Automa tic iT unes Syncing By default, i P od touch syncs whenever y ou connect it to iT unes. Y ou can prevent iP od touch from syncing when you connect iP od touch to a comput er other than the one you usually sync with. T urn o automatic syncing for iP od touch: 1 Connect iP od touch to your comput er .
Manually Managing Cont ent The manually managing featur e lets you choose just the music, videos, and podcasts you want t o have on iP od touch. Set up iP od touch for manually managing c ontent: 1 Connect iP od touch to your comput er . 2 In iT unes , select iPod touch in the sidebar .
F ile Sharing File Sharing lets y ou transfer les between iP od touch and your computer . Y ou can share les creat ed with a compatible app and saved in a supported format. Apps that support le sharing appear in the File Sharing Apps list in iT unes.
Music and Videos 5 Use the Music and Videos apps to enjoy your fav orite music, widescreen videos, and more. Browse your con tent on iP od touch by playlist , ar tists, songs, videos, or other categories , or browse your album artwork using Cover F low .
Playing Songs and Other Audio Y ou can browse conten t on iP od touch by playlists , ar tists, songs, videos, and other categories , or browse your album artwork using Cover F low . Playlist folders, which you can sync from iT unes , let you organiz e playlists into groups .
P ause a song T ap . Resume playback T ap . Raise or lower the volume Drag the volume slider or use the buttons on the side of iP od touch. Restart a song or a chapter in an audiobook or podcast T ap . Skip to the next song or chapter in an audiobook or podcast T ap .
Additional A udio Con trols T o display additional contr ols, tap the album artwork on the Now Playing screen. The repeat, Genius, and shue controls appear along with the scrubber bar . Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time, and the song number .
P odcast and Audiobook C ontrols Additional con trols and information appear on the Now Pla ying screen when you begin playback. The email, 3 0-second repeat, and playback speed controls appear along with the scrubber bar . Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time , and the episode or chapter number .
Contr ol music playback Say “play ” or “play music.” T o pause , say “pause” or “pause music.” Y ou can also say “next song” or “previous song .” Play an album, artist, or playlist Say “play ,” then say “ album,” “artist,” or “playlist” and the name.
Viewing All T racks on an Album See all the tracks on the album that contains the curr ent song: On the Now Playing screen, tap . T ap a track to play it. T ap the album ar twork thumbnail to return to the Now Playing scr een. Rating bar Back to Now Playing screen Album tracks In track list view , you can assign ratings to songs.
Genius Mixes are created a utomatically for you b y iT unes. iTune s creates di erent mixes depending on the v ariety of music you have in your iT unes librar y . For example , you may ha ve Genius Mixes that highlight R&B songs, or Alternative Rock songs.
Refreshing a playlist crea tes a playlist of di erent songs that go great with the song you picked. Y ou can refresh any Genius playlist , whether it was created in iT unes and synced to iP od touch, or created directly on iPod touch. Make a Genius playlist using a di erent song: T ap G enius Playlist, then tap New and pick a song.
Videos With iP od touch, you can view video cont ent such as movies , music videos, and video podcasts. If a video contains chapt ers, you can skip to the next or previous chapter , or bring up a list and star t playing at an y chapter that you choose.
Start playing at a specic chapter (if available) T ap , then choose a chapter fr om the list. Rewind or fast-forward T ouch and hold or . Skip to any point in a video Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Slide your nger down to adjust the scrub rate .
W atching Ren ted Movies and T V Shows Y ou can rent movies fr om the iT unes Store and wa tch them on iP od touch. Y ou can download rent ed movies and T V shows directly to iP od touch, or transfer mo vies from iT unes on your c omputer to iP od touch.
Con verting Videos for iP od touch Y ou can add videos other than those purchased from the iT unes St ore to iP od touch, such as videos you creat e in i Movie on a Mac, or videos you download from the Internet and then add to iT unes.
Changing the Bro wse Buttons Y ou can replace the browse buttons a t the bottom of the screen with buttons you use more frequently . F or example, if you often listen to podcasts, you can r eplace the Songs button with P odcasts.
F ace Time 6 About F ace Time F ace Time lets you make video calls over Wi-Fi. Use the front camera to talk face-t o-face, or the main camera to share what y ou see around you. T o use F ace T ime, you need an iP od touch 4th generation and a Wi-Fi In ternet connection.
Signing In T o sign in to F ace Time, you need an Apple ID . If you alr eady have an iT unes Store account, MobileM e account, or other Apple account, you can use that Apple ID with F ace Time. If you don ’t hav e an Apple account, you can create a new one when you open F ace Time.
Mak ing a Call T o make a F ace Time call, choose someone from your c ontacts, favorit es, or list of recen t calls. B uttons at the bottom of the F ace Time screen give y ou quick access to all three . Connect with a contact: T ap Contacts, choose a name, then tap F ace T ime.
Mute your microphone: T ap . Y our friend can still see you, and you can still see and hear your friend. Move y our picture-in-pic ture displa y : Drag the small window to any corner . Use another application during a call: Pre ss the Home button, then tap an application icon.
Camer a 7 About Camera With iP od touch 4th generation, you can captur e photos and video wherever you go . iP od touch 4th generation has a main camera that takes photos and high-denition video , and a front camera that lets y ou make F ace Time video calls and take photos and videos of yourself .

Uploading Photos and Videos to Y our Computer Y ou can upload the photos and videos you take with Camera to photo applica tions on your computer , such as iPhoto on a Mac. Upload photos and videos to y our computer: Connect i P od touch to your c omputer .
Photos 8 About Photos iP od touch lets you carry photos and videos with you, so you can share them with your family , friends , and associates. Y ou can sync photos and videos from your computer , view photos and videos taken with iP od touch, and use photos as wallpaper .
Viewing Photos and Videos Photos and videos you take with iP od touch 4th generation, sync from your computer , or save fr om an email can be viewed in Photos. If you sync photos with iPhoto 8.0 (par t of iLife ‘09) or later , y ou can view your photos and videos by the ev ents and faces you ’ve identied .
Zoom in on part of a photo: Double-tap where you want to zoom in. Double-tap again to zoom out. Y ou can also pinch to zoom in or out. View video in full screen, or t video to screen: Double tap the screen to scale the video to ll the screen. D ouble-tap again to t the video to the screen.
Slideshows Y ou can view a photo album as a slideshow , complet e with background music. View a photo album as a slideshow: T ap an album, then tap . Videos play automatically when they appear during the slideshow .
Cop ying and P asting Photos and Videos Y ou can copy a photo or video from Photos and past e it in an email message. S ome third-part y apps may also support copying and pasting photos and videos. Copy a phot o or video: Hold your nger on the screen until the Copy button appears , then tap Copy .
Publishing V ideos to Y ouT ube If you have a Y ouT ube account, you can publish videos directly from iPod touch 4th generation to Y ouTube . Some videos may not be transfer able, depending on the length of the movie or other factors. Publish a video to Y ouT ube: 1 While viewing a video , tap , then tap “Send to Y ouT ube.
W allpaper Y ou can set a photo as wallpaper for the L ock screen. On iP od touch 4th generation or later , you can also set wallpaper for y our Home screen. Set a photo as wallpaper (iP od touch 3rd genera tion or later): 1 Choose any photo and tap , then tap U se As W allpaper .
Game Cen ter 9 About Game Cent er Y ou can discover new games and shar e your game experiences with friends around the world in Game Center . Invit e your friends to play , or use auto-match t o nd other worthy opponents. Check leaderboards to see who the best players are .
T urn notications on or o : In Settings, choose Notications. T urning o Notications disables all notications for all apps . Specify which notications you wan t for Game Cent er: In Settings, choose Notications > Game Center , then congure the Sounds , Alerts, and Badges settings.
Games Purchasing and Downloading Games Games for the Game Cent er are available fr om the App Store . If you haven ’t entered credit card information f or your Apple accoun t, you ’ll be prompted to ent er that information befor e you can purchase and download games .
Invite a friend t o a multiplayer game from the F riends screen: 1 T ap Friends at the bottom of the screen. 2 Choose a friend. 3 Choose a game and tap Play . If the game allows or requires additional pla yers, you can choose players to in vite, then tap Next.
Leaderboar ds Some games provide one or more leaderboar ds to show the ranking of the game’ s players , with their scores , times, or other measures of the players ’ success. See a game’ s leaderboard: T ap Games, then choose the game and tap Leaderboard.
Achiev ements Some games reward y ou with bonus points for specic achiev ements. See the possible achievements f or a game: T ap Games, choose a game, then tap Achievemen ts. F or each achievement, Game Center shows how man y bonus points are awarded , and whether you ’ve completed the achiev ement.
F riends Game Center puts y ou in contact with players around the w orld. Y ou add friends to Game Center by making a request , or by accepting a request from another pla yer . Add a friend to Game Cen ter: 1 T ap Friends or Requests. 2 T ap +, then en ter a friend’ s email address or Game Center nickname.
Get information about a friend: T ap the friend’ s name. Search for a friend: T ap the status bar to scroll to the top of the screen, then tap the search eld and start t yping.
Y our Status and Acc ount Information The Me screen summarizes inf ormation about your friends, your games, and your achievemen ts. The text eld in the center of the scr een lets you enter your curren t status message. Y our status appears along with your nickname in other players’ F riends screens.
Mail 10 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange , and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo!, Google, and AOL—as well as other industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos , videos, and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
Checking and Reading Email The Mail icon on the Home screen shows the number of unread me ssages in your inboxe s. Y ou may ha ve other unread messages in other mailbo xes . Number of unread emails in your inboxes In Mail, the Mailboxes scr een gives you quick acce ss to all your inbox es and other mailbox es.
T urn “Organize By Thread” on or o : In Settings, choose “Mail, C ontacts, Calendars ,” and tap the switch to turn Organize By Thread on or o . S ee “ Mail” on page 1 70. If you have mor e than one account set up and turned on, the Accoun ts section of the Mailboxe s screen provides acce ss to your accounts .
Y ou can get contact information for the or ganizer and other invitee s, set an alert, add notes to the ev ent, and add comments tha t are included in your res ponse emailed to the organizer . Y ou can accept, tentatively accept, or decline the invitation.
Viewing Attachments iP od touch displays image a ttachments in many commonly used f ormats ( JPEG, GIF , and TIFF) inline with the text in email messages.
Open an attached le with another app: T ouch and hold the attachment, then choose an app. If no apps are available , you can choose to open the attachment in Quick Look. Save an a ttached photo to your Sav ed Photos album: T ap the photo, then tap Sav e Image.
Send a photo in an email message In Photos, choose a photo, tap , then tap Email Photo . Y ou can also copy and paste photos. T o send multiple photos at the same time, tap when viewing thumbnails in an album, then tap to select the photos, tap Share , and tap Email.
Organizing Email Y ou can organize messages in an y mailbox, folder , or search re sults window . Y ou can delete messages one at a time , or select a group to delete all at once . Y ou can also move message s from one mailbox or folder t o another in the same account or between di erent accounts.
Searching Email Y ou can search the T o, From, and Subjec t elds of email messages. Mail searches the downloaded messages in the curren tly open mailbox. F or MobileMe, Ex change, and some IMAP mail accounts , you can also search messages on the server .
Safari 11 Safari lets y ou surf the w eb an d view w ebpag es on iP od to uch as if you wer e on y our computer . Y ou can create bookmarks on iPod t ouch and sync them with your computer . Add web clips t o quick ly access y our favorite sites dir ectly from the Home screen.
Zooming and Scrolling Zoom in or out: Double-tap a column on a webpage to expand the column. Double- tap again to zoom out. Y ou can also pinch to zoom in or out manually . Scroll around a webpage Drag up, down, or sideways . W hen scrolling, you can touch and drag anywhere on the page without activating an y links.
Opening Multiple P ages Y ou can have up to eight page s open at a time. Some links automa tically open a new page instead of replacing the current one . The number inside the pages icon at the bottom of the screen shows how man y pages are open. I f there ’ s no number inside, just one page is open.
Enable AutoF ill to help y ou ll out web forms: In Settings, choose Safari > AutoF ill, then do one of the following: Â T o use information from contacts, turn Use C ontact Info on, then choose My Info and select the contact you want to use . Safari uses information from C ontacts to ll in contact elds on web forms.
Sync bookmarks with MobileMe: In Settings on iP od touch, select Bookmar ks in your MobileMe account. See “Setting Up MobileMe Accounts” on page 20 . Open a bookmarked webpage: T ap , then choose a bookmark or tap a folder to see the bookmarks inside.
Calendar 12 About Calendar Calendar gives y ou ready access to y our calendars and events. Y ou can view individual calendars, or several calendars at once. Y ou can view your events by da y , by mon th, or in a list. Y ou can search the titles , invit ees, locations , and notes of even ts.
In Settings on iP od touch, turn on Calendars in your MobileMe, M icrosoft Exchange , Â Google, or Y ahoo! accounts to sync your calendar information ov er the air , or set up a CalDA V account if your c ompany or organization supports it. See “ Adding Mail, Contacts, and Calendar Accounts ” on page 19 .
Searching Calendars Y ou can search the titles, invitees , locations, and notes elds of the events in your calendars. Calendar searches only the events for the calendars y ou’ re currently viewing. Search for ev ents: In list view , enter text in the search eld .
Important: If you ’ re trav eling, iPod touch ma y not aler t you at the correct local time. T o manually set the correct time, see “Date and Time ” on page 16 3 . Calendar  Y ou can change the default calendar using the Default Calendar setting .
Respond to an in vitation in Calendar: 1 T ap a meeting invitation in the calendar , or tap to display the Even t screen and tap an invitation. T ap “In vitation from ” to get contact information for the meeting or ganizer . T ap the  email address to send a message t o the organizer .
Subscribing to Calendars Y ou ca n subs cribe t o cal endars that use t he iC alenda r (.ic s) f ormat. Many calen dar-ba sed service s supp ort calenda r subs cripti ons, inclu ding Y ahoo!, Google , and the Mac OS X iCal application. Subscribed calendars are read-only .
Y ouT ube 13 F inding and Viewing Videos Y ouT ube feature s shor t videos submitted by people from around the w orld. T o use some feature s on iPod t ouch, you need to sign in to a Y ouTube acc ount when asked. F or information about requirements and ho w to get a Y ouT ube account , go to www .
Search for a video: 1 T ap Search (tap More rst, if Search isn ’t visible), then tap the Y ouT ube search eld. 2 T ype a word or phrase tha t describes what you ’ re looking for , then tap Search. Y ouT ube shows results based on video titles , descriptions, tags, and user names.
Managing Videos T ap next to a video to see related videos and more con trols for managing videos. Add the video to F avorites T ap “ Add to F av orites.” Add the video to a pla ylist T ap “ Add t o Playlist,” then selec t an existing playlist or tap to create a new playlist.
Rate the video or add a comment On the More Info screen, tap “Rate, Comment, or Flag ,” then choose “R ate or Commen t.” Y ou must be signed in to a Y ouT ube account to use this feature . See more videos from this account On the More Info screen, tap More Videos.
Changing the Bro wse Buttons Y ou can replace the F eatured , Most Viewed, B ookmarks, and Search buttons at the bottom of the screen with ones y ou use more frequently . For example , if you wa tch top-rated videos often but don ’t w atch many f eatured videos, you could replace the F eatured button with T op Rated.
Stocks 14 Viewing Stock Quotes Stocks lets you see the lat est available quot es for your selected stocks , funds, and indexes . T o use Stocks, i P od touch must join a Wi-F i network that’ s connected to the Internet. S ee “Connecting to the Internet” on page 19 .
When you view a chart in landscape orientation, you can touch the chart to displa y the value f or a specic point in time. Use two ngers to see the change in v alue over a specic period of time. Delete a stock: T ap and tap next to a stock, then tap Delete.

F inding Y our Curren t Location A quick tap nds your current (appro ximate) location. Find y our current location: T ap . Y our current location is indicated by a blue marker . If your location can ’t be determined precisely , a blue circle also appears around the marker .
Marking a Location with the Drop Pin The drop pin lets you mark a location b y hand. Mark a location: T ouch and hold the location on the map . The drop pin appears where y ou’ re touching the map.
See the Google Street View of a location: T ap . Flick left or right to pan through the 360° panoramic view . ( The inset sho ws your current view .) T ap an arrow to mov e down the street. T o return to map view , tap the map inset in the lo wer-right corner .
 T o view all the directions in a list, tap , then tap List. T ap any item in the list to see a map showing that leg of the trip . T ap Route Over view to return to the overview screen.  T o view directions one step at a time, tap Start, then tap to see the next leg of the trip.
Showing T rac Conditions When av ailable, you can show trac conditions for major streets and highwa ys on the map. Show or hide trac conditions: T ap , then tap Show T rac or Hide T rac.
T o add the business to your contacts list, tap “ Add to Contacts” at the bottom of the  screen, then tap “Create New C ontact ” or “ Add to Existing C ontact.” Share the location of the business by email.  See a list of the businesses found in the sear ch: F rom the Map screen, tap List.
W eather 16 Viewing W eather Summaries T ap W eather on the Home screen to get the current temperature and six-da y forecast for one or more cities ar ound the world. T o use W eather , iP od touch must join a Wi-Fi network that’ s connec ted to the Int ernet.
Reorder cities: T ap , then drag next to a cit y to a new place in the list. Delete a city : T ap and tap nex t to a city , then tap D elete. Display the t emperature in F ahrenheit or Celsius: T ap , then tap °F or °C.
Note s 17 About Notes Y ou can create notes on iP od touch and sync notes with suppor ted applications on your computer and online acc ounts. Y ou can search f or text in a list of notes.
Writing and Reading Note s When you sync Note s with an application on your computer or with online accoun ts, the Accounts scr een shows each those accounts , plus a button to displa y all notes in a single list. Searching Notes Y ou can search the text of notes. Search for notes: 1 T ap the status bar to scroll to the search eld at the top of the not e list. 2 Enter text in the search eld . Search results appear as you type. T ap Search to dismiss the keyboard and see more of the results.
Clock 18 W orld Clocks Y ou can add clocks to show the time in other major cities and time zones ar ound the world. View clocks: T ap W orld Clock. If the clock face is white, it ’ s daytime in that city . If the clock face is black, it’ s nighttime.
 T o set whether the alarm gives you the option to hit snooz e, turn Snooze on or o . If Snooze is on and y ou tap Snooze when the alarm sounds, the alarm stops and then sounds again in ten minutes .  T o give the alarm a description, tap Label.
Calcula tor 19 Using the Calcula tor T ap numbers and func tions in Calculator just as y ou would with a standard calculator . When you tap the add , subtract, multiply , or divide button, a white ring appears around the button to let y ou k now the operation to be carried out.

V oice Memos 20 Recording V oice Memos V oice Memos lets you use iP od touch as a portable recording device. V oice Memos uses the internal microphone in iP od touch 4th generation.
Record a voic e memo: 1 T ap to star t recording . Y ou can also press the c enter button on a compatible three-button headset with mic. 2 T ap to pause or to stop recording . Y ou can also press the center button on a compatible three-button headset with mic t o stop recording .

Pur chasing Music or Audiobooks When you nd a song , album, or audiobook you like in the iT unes Store, you can purchase and download it to iP od touch. Y ou can preview an item bef ore you purchase it to make sure it’ s what you want. Previe w a song or audiobook: T ap the item.
Pur chasing or Renting Videos The iT unes St ore lets you purchase and download mo vies, T V shows, and music videos (may not be av ailable in all countries or regions).
Streaming or Downloading P odcasts Y ou can listen to audio podcasts or wat ch video podcasts streamed over your Wi-Fi Internet connection from the iT unes Store. Y ou can also download audio and video podcasts to iP od touch. P odcasts you do wnload to iP od touch are synced to your iT unes library when you connect iPod t ouch to your computer .
Syncing P urchased Con tent iT unes aut omatically syncs everything you’ve do wnloaded or purchased on iP od touch to your iT unes librar y when you connect iP od touch to your comput er . This lets you access the do wnloads on your computer and provide s a backup if you delete purchased cont ent from iP od touch.
Viewing Account Inf ormation T o view your Apple account inf ormation on iPod t ouch, tap your account (at the bottom of most iT unes St ore screens). Or go to Settings > Store and tap V iew Account. Y ou must be signed in to view your account inf ormation.
App S tore 22 About the App Stor e Y ou can search for , browse , review , purchase, and download apps from the App S tore directly to iP od touch. Apps that y ou download and install from the App Stor e on iP od touch are backed up to your iT unes librar y the next time you sync iP od touch with your computer .
Bro wsing and Searching Browse the f eatured selections to see new , notable , or recommended apps, or browse T op 25 to see the most popular apps. I f you ’ re looking for a specic app , use Search. Browse ap ps: T ap F eatured , Categories , or T op 25 .
Info Scr een T ap any app in a list to see more information, such as the app’ s pr ice , screenshots, and ratings. If you already installed the app , “Installed” appears instead of the price on the Info screen. View screenshots: Scroll to near the bottom of the Info page.
Downloading Apps When you nd an app you w ant in the App Store , you can purchase and do wnload it to iP od touch. If the app is free , you can download it without charge after pro viding your Apple accoun t information. Once you download an app , it ’ s immediately installed on iPod t ouch.
Deleting Apps Y ou can delete apps you install from the App St ore. I f you delete an app , data associated with the app is no longer av ailable to iP od touch, unless you r einstall the app and restore its da ta from a backup. Y ou can reinstall an app and restore its da ta as long as you backed up iPod t ouch with iT unes on your c omputer .
Updating Apps Whenever you acc ess the App Store , it checks for updat es to apps you ’ve installed . The App Store also a utomatically checks for updat es every week. The App St ore icon shows the total number of app updates a vailable. If an update is av ailable and you access the App St ore, the Updates screen appears immediately .
Settings 23 Settings allows you to customiz e iP od touch apps, set the date and time , congure your network connection, and enter other pr eferences f or iP od touch. Airplane Mode Airplane mode disables the wireless f eatures of iP od touch to r educe potential interference with aircraft operation and other electrical equipment.

When iP od touch is joined to a Wi-F i network, the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar at the top of the screen shows signal str ength. The more bars y ou see, the stronger the signal. Set iP od touch to ask if you wan t to join a new network: Choose Wi-Fi and turn “ Ask to Join Networks” on or o .
Y ou can turn notications o if you don ’t want to be notied , or if you want t o conserve batter y life . T urn all notications on or o : T ap Notications, then turn notications on or o .
General General settings include network, sharing, securit y , and other iOS settings. Y ou can also nd information about your iP od touch, and r eset various iP od touch settings.
Bluetooth iP od touch can connect wirelessly to Bluetooth headphone device s for music listening . See “Bluetooth Devices” on page 40. Y ou can also connect the Apple Wireless Keyboard via Bluetooth. S ee “ Using an Apple Wireless Keyboard ” on page 37 .
Set whether double-clicking the Home button shows iP od controls when pla ying music: Choose General > Home Button, then tap the swit ch to turn iP od controls on or o . This feature o verrides the action for double-clicking the Home button, and works even if the displa y is turned o or iP od touch is locked.
If you forget y our passcode, you must restore the iP od touch software . See “Updating and Restoring iP od touch Software” on page 207 . Set how long before y our passcode is required: Choose General > Passc ode Lock and enter your passc ode.
Safari is disabled and its icon is removed from the Home scr een. Y ou cannot use Safari to browse the web or acce ss web clips. Other third-par ty apps may allow web browsing even if Safari is disabled . Y ouTube is disabled and its icon is r emoved from the Home screen.
Date and Time These settings apply to the time sho wn in the status bar at the top of the screen, and in world clocks and calendars. Set whether iP od touch shows 24-hour time or 1 2-hour time: Choose General > Date & T ime, then turn 24-Hour Time on or o .
Change a keyboard’ s layout: In Settings, choose General > Keyboard > International Keyboards and select a keyboard. Y ou can mak e separate selections for both the on- screen software and external hardware keyboards for each language .
Acce ssibility T o turn on accessibility features (iP od touch 3rd generation or lat er), choose Accessibility and choose the featur es you want. See Chapter 27 , “ Accessibility ,” on page 18 9 . Prole s This setting appears if you install one or more pr oles on iP od touch.
Location warnings are r equests made by apps (such as Maps) to use location services. iP od touch presents a location w arning for an app the rst time the app makes a request to use location services. If you tap Cancel in response to the r equest, the request isn ’t pr esented again.
T V Out Use these settings to con trol how iP od touch plays videos on y our T V . T urn widescreen on or o : Choose Video and turn Wide screen on or o . Set T V signal to NTSC or P AL: Choose Video > T V Signal and selec t NTSC or P AL. NTSC and P AL are T V broadcast standards.

Changes you make to an accoun t ’ s settings on iP od touch are not synced to your computer , so you can congure y our accounts to work with iP od touch without a ec ting the account settings on your c omputer .
T urn Push on: Choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” > F etch New Data, then tap to turn Push on. Set the interval to fet ch data: Choose “Mail, Contacts , Calendars” > Fetch New Data, then choose how often you want t o fetch data f or all accounts.
Add a signatur e to your messages: Choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” > Signature , then type a signature. Y ou can set iPod t ouch to add a signature—your fa vorite quote , or your name, title, and phone number , f or example—to the bottom of every message you send .
Notes The Default Acc ount setting appears when you set up more than one accoun t that syncs notes. Set which account a new note is assigned t o: Choose “M ail, Contacts , Calendars,” and under Notes , tap Default Account and choose an acc ount.
 T o set whether S afari accepts c ookies, tap Accept C ook ies and choose Never , “Fr om visited ,” or Always. A cookie is a piece of information that a website puts on iP od touch so the website can remember you when you visit again. That way , webpages can be cust omized for you based on information y ou may have pr ovided.
C ontacts 24 About Con tacts Contacts makes it easy to keep track of your friends and associate s. Y ou can add contacts directly on iP od touch, or sync contacts from applications on your comput er .
Set up an LDAP or CardDA V account: 1 In Settings, tap “Mail Contacts, Calendars,” then tap Add Accoun t. 2 T ap O ther , then tap A dd LDAP Account or A dd CardDA V Accoun t. 3 Enter your acc ount information and tap Next to verify the accoun t. 4 T ap Save.
Managing Contacts on iP od touch Add a con tact on iPod touch: T ap Contacts and tap . Delete a contact In Contacts, choose a contact, than tap Edit. Scroll down and tap Delete Contact. Enter a pause in a number T ap , then tap P ause. P auses appear as commas when the number is saved .
Use a con tact ’ s info screen: T ap Contacts and choose a contact. Then tap an item. Visit the website Send an email See a map and get directions Call in FaceTime appears on the F ace Time button if you’ ve previously had a F ace Time call with the contact.
The source accoun ts of a unied contact appear at the bottom of the screen, under Linked Cards. View contact information for a sour ce account: T ap one of the source accounts. Unlink a contact: T ap Edit, tap , then tap Unlink. Link a contact: T ap Edit , then tap and choose a contact.
Nike + iP od 25 Activa ting Nike + i P od When turned on in Settings, the Nike + iP od app appears on the Home screen (iP od touch 2nd generation or later). With a Nike + iP od Sensor (sold separately), the Nike + iPod app pr ovides audible f eedback on your speed , distance , time elapsed, and calories burned during a run or walk.
Linking a S ensor The rst time you start a workout, you ’ re prompted to activ ate your sensor , which automatically links the sensor with iP od touch. Y ou can also use Nike + i P od settings to link a sensor with iP od touch. Nike + iPod can link t o only one sensor at a time.
Sending W orkouts to Nikeplus.com The rst time you connect iP od touch to iT unes after a workout, you ’ re asked if you want to a utomatically send your workouts to Nike+ when you sync iP od touch. Click Send to send your current w orkout to nikeplus.
Nike + iP od Settings In Settings, choose Nike + iP od to activate and adjust settings f or the Nike + iPod app . Choose a P owerSong: Choose P owerSong and select a song from your music library .
iBooks 26 About iBooks iBooks is a great way t o read and buy books. Download the free iBooks app from the App Store , and then get everything from classics to best sellers from the built-in iBookstore. Once you download a book, it’ s displayed on your bookshelf .
Syncing Books and PDFs Use iT unes to sync y our books and PDFs between iP od touch and your computer . When iP od touch is connected to your comput er , the Books pane lets you select which items to sync. Y ou can sync books that you download or purchase from the iBookstor e.
Reading Books Reading a book is easy . G o to your bookshelf and tap Books. Find the book you wan t to read , then tap to open it. T urn pages: T ap near the right or lef t margin of a page , or ick left or right. T o change the direction the page turns when you tap the left margin, go to Settings > iBooks.
Enlarge an image: Double-tap an image to enlarge it. T ap Done to return to close the zoomed image and continue r eading. If bookmar k syncing is on, when you close a book, your book marks, highlights , notes, and current page information ar e saved in your A pple account.
Searching Books Y ou can search for the title or author of a book to quickly locate it on the bookshelf . Y ou can also search the conten ts of a book to nd all the reference s to a word or phrase you ’ re inter ested in. Y ou can also send a search to Wik ipedia or Google to nd other related re sources.
If you ’ve synced iP od touch to your c omputer , delet ed items remain in your iT unes library . If you delete a book you purchased , you can also download it again fr om Purchase s in iBookstore.
Acc essibility 27 Universal A ccess F eatures In addition to the many f eatures that make iP od touch easy to use for e ver yone , accessibility features (iP od touch 3rd generation or later) are designed t o make it easier for users with visual, auditor y , or other ph ysical disabilities to use iP od touch.
4 Select the accessibility features that you wan t to use and click OK. The Large T ext feature can only be turned on or o using iP od touch settings. See “Large T ext ” on page 203 . Y ou can turn closed captioning on or o in Video settings.
Setting Up V oiceO ver Important: V oiceOver changes the gestur es used to control iP od touch. Once V oiceOver is turned on, you hav e to use V oiceOver gestures to opera te iP od touch— even to turn V oiceOver o again to resume standard operation.
By default, V oiceOver uses the language that’ s set for iP od touch. Y ou can set a di erent language for V oiceOver . Set the language for iP od touch: In Settings, choose General > International > Language, then selec t a language and tap OK.
Practice gestur es: In S ettings, choose G eneral > Acce ssibility > V oiceOver , then tap V oiceOver Practice . When you nish practicing, tap Done. Rotor Con trol The rotor con trol is a virtual dial that you can use to change the results of up and down ick gestures when Voic eOver is turned on. Operate the rot or: Rotate two ngers on the iP od touch screen to “tur n ” the dial to choose between options.

Large T ext Large T ext lets you make the text larger in aler ts, Contacts, Mail, Messages , and Notes. Y ou can choose 20-point, 24-point, 32-point , 40-point, 48-point , or 56-point text. Set the text size: In Settings, choose General > Accessibility , tap Lar ge T ex t, then tap the text size you want.
Closed Captioning and Other Helpful F eatures Many iP od touch featur es help make iPod t ouch accessible to all users, including those with visual or auditory impairments. Closed Captioning Y ou can turn on closed captioning for videos in iP od settings.

Backups include settings , downloaded apps and data, and other information on iP o d touch.

4 Click Restore . F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the rest ore process. When restoring , it is recommended that y ou back up iPod t ouch when prompted.
