Status Icons The icons in the status bar at the t op of the screen give information about iP ad: Status icon What it means Airplane mode Shows that airplane mode (av ailable on iP ad Wi-F i + 3G) is on—you can’ t access the Internet, or use Bluetooth® devices.
Applications The follo wing applications are included with iP ad: Safari Browse w ebsites on the Internet. Rotate iPad sidewa ys for widescreen viewing. Double- tap to zoom in or out—Safari automatically ts the w ebpage column to the screen for easy reading.
App Store Search the App Store f or applications you can purchase or download . Read reviews or write your own reviews f or your favorite apps . D ownload and install the applications on your Home screen. Settings Adjust all iP ad settings in one convenient place—network, mail, web , music, video, photos, and more.
Customizing the Home Scr een Y ou can customize the layout of application icons on the Home scr een—including the icons in the Dock along the bottom of the screen. If you want, arrange them over multiple Home screens. Rearrange application icons: 1 T ouch and hold any application icon until the icons wiggle.
Multi-T ouch Screen The contr ols on the Multi-T ouch screen change dynamically , depending on the task you ’ re per forming. Opening Applications Open an application: T ap its icon on the Home screen. Close an application and return to the Home scr een: Pre ss the Home button.
Flick to scr oll quickly . Y ou can wait for the scrolling to come to a st op, or touch anywhere on the screen to stop it immediately . T ouching the screen to stop scrolling doesn ’t choose or activate anything on the screen. T o quick ly scroll to the top of a list, webpage , or email message, tap the status bar at the top of the screen.
Depending on the list, tapping an item can do di erent things—for example , it may open a new list, play a song , open an email message, or show someone’ s contact information. Return to a previous list: T ap the back button in the upper-left corner .
If you touch the wrong key , y ou can slide your nger to the correct key . The letter isn ’t entered un til you release your nger fr om the key . Backspace to delet e the previous character: T ap . T ype uppercase T ap the Shift key before tapping a letter .
Dictionar y F or many languages , i P ad has dic tionaries to help you type. The appropriate dictionar y is activated aut omatically when you select a suppor ted keyboard. T o see a list of suppor ted languages, from Settings, choose General > International > Keyboards.
Editing—C ut, Copy , and Past e The Multi-T ouch screen makes it easy to make changes to text you’ ve entered . An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the insertion point precisely where you need it. Grab points on selected text let you quickly select more or less text.
Switch keyboar ds, if more than one keyboard is turned on T ouch and hold the Next Keyboard key , then slide your nger to choose a new keyboard. The name of the newly activated keyboard appears briey .
Searching Y ou can search iPad‘ s built-in applications, including Mail, Calendar , iPod , Video, Notes, and Contacts. Search an individual application, or search all the applications at once using Spotlight. Go to Spotlight: On the main page of the Home screen, ick right or pr ess the Home button.
Spotlight also searches the names of built-in and installed applications on iP ad. If you have a lot of applica tions, you can use Spotlight to locate and open them. Open an application from Spotlight: Enter the application name , then tap to open the application.
Unpairing a Bluetooth Device from iP ad If you pair iP ad with one B luetooth device and then wan t to use a di erent device of the same type instead, you must unpair the rst device. Unpair a Bluetooth device: 1 In Settings, choose General > Bluetooth, then turn Bluetooth on.
Important: If iP ad is ver y low on power , it ma y display one of the following images , indicating that iP ad needs to charge for up to ten minut es before y ou can use it. I f iP ad is extremely low on power , the display ma y be blank for up to two minute s before one of the low-battery images appears.
T o enable this feature, turn on Find My iP ad in your MobileMe account settings. See “Setting Up Accoun ts” on page 35 . Find y our i P ad: On your computer , log in to MobileMe at www.
Using and Cleaning iP ad Using iP ad Comfortably It ’ s impor tant to nd a comfortable posture when using iPad and t o take frequent breaks. Let your lap , a table, case, or dock accessor y suppor t iP ad during use. Cleaning iP ad Handle your iP ad with care to maintain its appearance.

Set up iPad: 1 Download and install the latest version of iT unes from www .itunes.com/download. 2 Connect iP ad to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC using the cable that came with i P ad.
Photos (in your comput er ’ s photo application or folder)  Videos (in your computer’ s movie application or folder)  Contacts—names , phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, and more  .
3 Congure the sync settings in each of the settings panes . See the following section for a description of each pane. 4 Click Apply in the low er-right corner of the screen. By default, “Open iT unes when this iP ad is connec ted” is selected .
Info P ane The Info pane lets y ou congure the sync settings for y our contacts, calendars, email accounts , and web browser . MobileMe  Y ou can use MobileM e to sync your email, calendars, contacts, and bookmar ks wirelessly with iP ad. Click Learn More to creat e a MobileMe account, or get a free trial.
Apps P ane Use the Apps pane to sync A pp Store applications , ar range applications on the iP ad Home screen, or copy documents between iP ad and your computer . When you sync iP ad, iT unes automatically adds applications you downloaded on iP ad to the iT unes Librar y .
Pre ven ting Automatic S yncing Y ou can prevent iP ad from syncing automatically when you connect iP ad to a di erent computer . Prev ent automatic syncing for all iP ads: In iT unes choose iT une.
3G, EDGE, and GPRS allow Internet connectivity over the cellular network av ailable through your iP ad carrier ’ s wireless service. Check the carr ier ’ s network coverage in your area f or availability .
Setting Up Accoun ts MobileMe and Microsof t Exchange pro vide not only email, but contact and calendar information that you can sync t o iP ad automatically , over the air . MobileMe can also sync your bookmarks on iPad with Safari on a Mac. Y ou set up MobileMe, Exchange, and other email accounts directly on iP ad.
When you disable con tacts or calendars in an MobileM e or Exchange accoun t, or if you delete an account , i P ad asks if you want to keep information or delete it. Push A ccounts MobileMe, Microsof t Exchange , and Y ahoo! Mail are “push ” accounts .
Safari 3 About Safari Use Safari on iP ad to sur f the web . A dd web clips to the Home screen for quick access to your fa vorite sites . Create bookmar ks on iP ad and sync them with your computer . T o use S afari, iPad must hav e an Internet connection.
Opening W ebpages Open a webpage: T ap the address eld (in the title bar) to bring up the onscreen keyboard, type the web address, then tap G o . I f the address eld isn ’t visible, tap the status bar at the top of the screen t o quickly scroll up to the address eld.
See a link’ s destination address T ouch and hold the link. The address appears in a window next to your nger . Y ou can open the link in the active page, open it in a new page, or copy the address. Stop a webpage from loading T ap . Reload a webpage T ap .
Bring up the keyboard T ap inside a text eld. Move to another t ext eld T ap another text eld, or tap the Next or Previous buttons above the onscreen keyboard . Submit a form After lling out a form, tap Go or Search. Most pages also have a link y ou can tap to submit the form.
Sync bookmarks with your computer: 1 Connect iP ad to your computer . 2 In iT unes, select i P ad in the sidebar . 3 Click the Info tab , selec t “Sync Safari bookmarks” under Other , then click Apply . F or more information, see “Syncing ” on page 28 .
Mail 4 About Mail Use Mail to read your email me ssages, and compose new messages using the onscreen keyboard. Mail works with MobileMe, Microsof t Exchange , and man y of the most popular email ser vices—including Y ahoo! Mail, Google email, and AOL—as well as other industry- standard POP3 and IMAP email services.
Note: If you’ re composing a message from your Microsoft Exchange account and have acc ess to your ent erprise Global Address List (GAL), matching addresse s from the contacts on iP ad appear rst, followed by mat ching GAL addresses.
Checking and Reading Email The Mail icon shows the total number of unread me ssages in all your inbox es. Y ou may have other unr ead messages in other mailbox es. Number of unread messages in your inboxes Check for new message s: Choose a mailbox, tap Inbox, or at any time .
Load additional message s: Scroll to the bottom of the list of message s and tap Load More Messages. Read a message: T ap a mailbox, then tap a message. Within a message, tap or to see the next or previous message. Zoom in on part of a message Double-tap the area to z oom in.
Save an a ttached photo to your Sav ed Photos album: T ap the photo , then tap Save Image . See all the recipients of a message T ap Details at the top of the screen. T ap a name or email address to see the recipient’ s contact information. T ap the email address to contact the person.
Searching Email Y ou can search the T o , From, and Subject elds of email messages. Mail searches the downloaded messages in the curren tly open mailbox. For MobileMe , Exchange, and some IMAP mail accounts , you can also search messages on the server .
Photos 5 About Photos iP ad lets you carry photos with you, so you can enjoy them on the crisp , vibran t display wherever you ar e, and share them with family and friends. Y ou can sync photos from your computer , imp ort them from a digital camera or iPhone, or save them from email or the web .
Impor ting Photos from iPhone or a Digital C amera With the iP ad Camera Connection Kit (sold separately), you can import photos directly from a digital camera or iPhone, or from an SD memor y card that contains digital photos.
Viewing Photos Photos lets you view photos sync ed from your computer’ s photo application, impor ted from a digital camera or iPhone , or saved from an email message or web page . Photos organiz es collections by Albums, Even ts, F aces, and Places.
Show or hide the con trols: T ap the photo to show the controls. T ap again to hide the controls . View a photo in landscape orientation: Rotate iPad sidew ays. The photo or video resize s automatically to t the scr een. Zoom in on part of a photo: Double-tap where you want t o zoom in.
Sharing Photos Y ou can share your photos as slideshows , complete with music and transitions. If you connect iPad t o a television or projector , y ou can share your slideshows with a lar ge audience . Y ou can send photos and videos in email messages , and add phot os to your MobileMe Galler y .
Adding a Phot o to a MobileMe Galler y If you have a MobileMe account , you can add photos directly from iP ad to your MobileMe Galler y . Y ou can also add photos to someone else ’ s M obileMe Galler y if they allow email contributions.
Assigning a Photo t o a Con tact Y ou can assign a photo to a contact. Assign a photo to a con tac t: 1 Choose a photo on iP ad, then tap . 2 T ap “ Assign to Contact,” then choose a contact. 3 Drag the photo to pan, and pinch to zoom in or out, until the photo looks the way you want.
Using Picture F rame When iP ad is lock ed, you can display an album of photos. T his is a great way to enjo y iP ad while charging it in an iP ad D ock. T o change Pic ture F rame settings, go to Settings > Pic ture F rame, then set any of the following options: The transition you select is play ed between photos.
Videos 6 About Videos Y ou can use iPad to view movie s, music videos, video podcasts, and, if they ’ re available in your area, T V shows. iP ad also suppor ts special f eatures such as chapters , subtitles, alternate audio , and closed captioning.
Display pla yback controls: While a video is playing, tap the screen to show the controls . T ap again to hide them. Con trolling Video Playback Rotate iP ad to play videos play in widescreen orienta tion and take full advantage of the display . Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar to skip to any poin t in the video.
Skip to any point in a video Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Slide your nger down to adjust the scrub ra te from fast to slow . Stop watching a video bef ore it nishes playing T ap Done, or press the Home button.
W atching Rented Mo vies Y ou can rent movies in standard or high denition f ormat from the iT unes Store and watch them on iP ad. Y ou can download rented movie s on iP ad, or transfer them from iT unes on your computer to iP ad. (Rented movies aren ’t av ailable in all regions.
Y ouT ube 7 F inding and Viewing Videos Y ouT ube features short videos submitted by people from around the w orld. Y ou can watch the latest, most popular videos, search for videos about topics of intere st, ag your favorites , and quickly access videos that you upload t o Y ouT ube from your comput er .
 Playlists: V ideos you add to pla ylists. Y ou must be signed in to a Y ouT ube account to use this feature .  My Videos: Videos that you’v e upload to Y ouTube . Y ou must be signed in to a Y ouT ube account to use this fea ture. Search for a video: 1 T ap the Y ouT ube search eld.
Rewind or fast-forward T ouch and hold or . Skip to any point in a video Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Stop watching a video T ap Done, or press the Home button. T oggle between full-screen and standard mode Double-tap the video . Y ou can also tap to make the video ll the screen, or to make it t the screen.
Add a video to F avorite s or a playlist T ap Add, then select F avorites or a pla ylist. Email a link to a video T ap Share. Flag a video T ap the movie to display the t oolbar , then tap . W atching Y ouT ube on a T V Y ou can connec t iP ad to your T V or a projector , and watch Y ouT ube on the large screen.
Calendar 8 About Calendar iP ad makes it easy to stay on schedule. Y ou can vie w calendars individually , or sev eral calendars at once. Y ou can view your even ts by day , week, or month, or in a list. Y ou can also search events b y title, invitee , or loca tion.
Adding C alendar Even ts to iPad Y ou can create and edit calendar events directly on iP ad. Add an ev ent: T ap and enter event inf ormation, then tap D one.
 List view: All y our appointments and even ts appear in a scrollable list, next to the selected day . T o view a di erent day , tap or or select a day from the timeline below the calendar . T o see a list of events along with the day ’ s calendar , rotate iP ad to landscape orientation.
Searching Calendars Y ou can search the titles, invitees , and locations of the ev ents in your calendars. Calendar searches the calendar or calendars y ou’ re currently viewing . Search for ev ents: Enter text in the search eld. Search results appear as you type.
Responding to Meeting In vitations If you have a Microsoft Exchange acc ount on iP ad with Calendars enabled , you can receive and r espond to meeting in vitations from people in your or ganization. When you receiv e an invitation, the meeting appears in your calendar with a dotted line around it.
C ontacts 9 About Con tac ts iP ad lets you easily access and edit y our contact lists from personal, business, and organizational accoun ts. Y ou can search across all of your groups , and the information in Contacts is automa tically accessed to make addressing emails quick and easy .
Syncing and A dding Con tacts Y ou can add contacts to iPad in the se ways: Enter con tacts on iPad  In iT unes, sync contacts from Google or Y ahoo!, or sync with applica tions on your  computer .
Managing Contacts on iP ad Add a con tact on iPad: T ap Contacts, then tap . Delete a contact In Contacts, choose a contact, then tap Edit. Scroll down, then tap Delete Contact. Edit contact information In Contacts, choose a contact, then tap Edit. T o add an item, tap .
Note s 10 Writing and Reading Note s With its large displa y and onscreen keyboard, i P ad mak es jotting notes easy . Y ou can view notes in landscape or por trait orientation.
Searching Notes Y ou can search the text of notes to nd a particular note. Search for notes: Enter text in the search eld that appears at the t op of the notes list. (In por trait orientation, tap Notes to dis play the notes list.) Search results appear aut omatically as you type.
Maps 11 About Maps Maps provides classic , satellite, hybrid , and terrain views of locations in many countries. Search for a location, then get detailed driving, public transit, or walking direc tions, as well as trac inf ormation.
Searching for L ocations Y ou can search for locations in many wa ys—by address , int ersection, ar ea, landmark, bookmark, con tact, or zip code. Find a loca tion and see a map: 1 T ap the search eld to bring up the keyboard . 2 T ype an address or other search information.
F inding Y our Curr ent Loca tion A quick tap nds your current location. T he onscreen digital compass shows which direction you ’ re facing. Find y our cur rent loca tion: T ap in the status bar at the top of the screen. A blue marker shows your current location.
Marking a Location with a Drop Pin A drop pin lets you mark a location by hand . Use a dropped pin: T ouch and hold any location on the map to drop a pin. Or , you can drag or tap the bottom-right corner of the screen, then tap Drop Pin. A pin drops on the map .
Map V iews Y ou can choose classic, satellite, hybrid , or terrain view. Y ou can also see a location in street view , when available . Change the view: T ap or drag the bottom-right corner of the screen, then tap Classic, Satellite , Hybrid, or T errain.
Getting Direc tions Y ou can get step-by-step driving, public transit, or walking direc tions. Get directions: 1 T ap Directions. 2 T ap the elds at the top of the screen to en ter your star ting and ending locations. Normally , i P ad star ts with your current location (if av ailable).
Showing T rac Conditions When av ailable, you can show trac conditions f or major streets and highways on the map. Show or hide trac conditions: T ap or drag the bottom-right corner of the screen, then turn Tr ac on or o .
Con tact a business or get directions: T ap the pin that marks a business, then tap next to the name. F rom there, you can do the following: T ap Directions T o Here or Directions From Here to nd dir ections. Â T ap Home P age to visit the website, or Email to send an email.
i Po d 12 Playing Music and Other Audio Browse y our music collection by song, artist, album, genre, or composer . List en to your songs, audiobooks, and podcasts. Create and manage playlists , or use Genius to creat e playlists for y ou. Listen to audio using the built-in s peaker .
Con trolling Song Playback When you play a song , the Now Playing screen appears . P ause a song T ap . Resume playback T ap . Raise or lower the volume Drag the onscreen volume slider or use the buttons on the side of iP ad. Restart a song or a chapter in an audiobook or podcast T ap .
Y ou can display playback con trols at any time when you ’ re listening to music and using another application—or even when iP ad is locked—by double-click ing the Home button. If you’ re using an application, the playback controls appear in fr ont of the application.
Set iPad to r epeat songs T ap . T ap again to set iPad t o repeat only the current song. = iP ad is set to repeat all songs in the current album or list. = iP ad is set to repeat the current song ov er and over . = iP ad isn’ t set to repeat songs.
 = Play at normal speed  = Play at double s peed  = Play at half s peed T rack list 30-second repeat The 30-sec ond repeat contr ol and track list control appear at the bottom of the scr een. Play back the last 30 sec onds: T ap . See other podcasts in a series or chapters in an audiobook: T ap .
Using Pla ylists A playlist is a custom compila tion of songs. Y ou might want to create a pla ylist for a specic mood or occasion, to share with others on your local network, or organize your music library . Y ou can use three k inds of playlists on iP ad—standard playlists, Genius playlists , and Genius Mixes.
Making G enius Playlists Genius nds songs in your iT unes librar y that go great together . A Genius playlist is a collection of songs that are picked for you to go with a song y ou choose from your library . Y ou can create Genius playlists in iT unes and sync them to iPad .
Create a Genius playlist fr om a new song: In the playlist, tap New , then pick a new song. Delete a sav ed Genius playlist: T ap the G enius playlist, then tap Delete. Once a Genius playlist is synced back to iT unes, you won ’t be able to delete it directly from iP ad.
iT unes Stor e 13 About the iT unes Store Use the iT unes Store to add con tent to y our iPad . Y ou can browse and purchase music and T V shows , buy and rent movies, or download and play podcasts or iT unes U collections. Many movies and T V shows are av ailable in b oth standard and high denition.
F inding Music, V ideos, and More Browse c onten t: At the top of the screen, browse by Genres , F eatured , T op Char ts, or Genius. At the bottom of the screen, tap Music, M ovies , T V Shows, P odcasts, Audiobooks, iTune s U, or D ownloads.
Pur chasing Music or Audiobooks When you nd a song , album, or audiobook you like in the iT unes Store , you can purchase and download it to iP ad. Y ou can also preview it to make sure it’ s what you want. T o mak e purchases or write reviews , y ou need an iT unes Store account.
Pur chasing or Renting Videos When you nd a movie , T V show , or music video you like in the iT unes Store, you can purchase and download it to iP ad. Y ou can purchase movies and T V shows in standard (480p) or high denition (72 0p) format. If you purchase a high denition version, you also receive the standar d denition version.
Listening to or W atching P odcasts Y ou can listen to audio podcasts or watch video podcasts on iP ad. Y ou can also download podcasts to iP ad, and sync them to the iT unes librar y on your computer when you connect. T ap P odcasts at the bottom of the iT unes Store screen.
Syncing C onten t iT unes automatically syncs everything you download or purchase on iP ad to your iT unes librar y when you connect iP ad to your computer . T his lets you access the downloads on your comput er and provides a backup if you delete pur chased conten t from iP ad.
App S tore 14 About the App Stor e Use the App Stor e to add applications to iP ad. Browse , purchase, and download applications specically designed f or iP ad, or for iPhone and iPod touch. Applications you do wnload from the App Store and install on iP ad are backed up to your iT unes library the nex t time you sync.
Search for applications: T ap the search eld at the top of the screen and en ter one or more words . Choose from the list of suggestions, or tap Search on the keyboard. Getting More Information T ap any application in a list to see the Inf o screen, which sho ws the application ’ s price, screenshots, and ratings.
Purchase s are charged to your iT unes Store account. If you make additional purchases within fteen minutes, you don’ t have to en ter your passwor d again. Y ou can use iTune s Store gift cards, gif t certicates, or other promotional codes to make purchases.
Updating Applications The App Stor e checks for updates t o applications you install. The App Store icon shows the total number of application updates a vailable. If an update is av ailable when you access the App S tore, the Updates screen appears immediately .
Deleting Applications Y ou can delete iPad applications tha t you’ ve installed from the App St ore. Y ou can ’t delete built-in iP ad applications. iT unes automatically backs up any applica tions you download to iP ad when you sync. If you delete an application on iP ad, you can reinstall it if it was previously synced .
iBooks 15 About iBooks The iBooks application is a great wa y to read and buy books. Download the free application from the App St ore, and then get everything from classics to best sellers from the built-in iBookstore. Once you download a book, it ’ s display ed on your bookshelf .
T o download the iBooks application and use the iBookstore, iPad must ha ve an Internet connection. Y ou also need an iT unes Store accoun t. iPad normally gets your iT unes Store account settings whe.
Books that you purchase are a utomatically synced to y our iT unes librar y the next time you sync iP ad with your computer . T his provides a backup in case you delet e the book from iP ad. T o view a deleted book, you must sync it back to iP ad. Reading Books Reading a book is easy .
Changing the T ype Size and F ont Y ou can change the appearance of books. T o make changes, access the controls b y tapping near the center of a page . Change the typeface or type size: T ap , then in the list that appears, tap or to reduce or enlarge the type size.
Acc essibility 16 In addition to the many f eatures that make iP ad easy to use for everyone, iPad include s universal access f eatures. Universal A ccess F eatures Universal access f eatures make iPad easy to use f or people who have a vision impairment, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have a physical or learning disability .
The featur es you select are av ailable immediately on iP ad when you click OK. V oiceOver V oiceO ver describes aloud what appears onscr een, so that you can use iPad without seeing it. V oiceO ver tells you about each elemen t on the screen as you select it.
