Lock iPhone Pre ss the On/O Sleep/W ake button. Unlock iPhone Pre ss the Home button or the On/O Sleep/W ake button, then drag the slider . T urn iPhone completely o Pre ss and hold the On/O Sleep/W ake button for a few seconds until the r ed slider appears, then drag the slider .
Ring/Silent Swit ch Flip the Ring/Silent switch t o put iPhone in ring mode or silent mode. Ring Silent In ring mode, iPhone pla ys all sounds. In silent mode , iPhone doesn ’t ring or play alerts and other sound e ects.
iPhone Apps The apps in the follo wing table are included with iPhone. Note: App functionalit y and availability may v ar y , depending on the coun tr y or region where you purchase and use iPhone . Phone Make calls, with quick access to recen t callers, favorite s, and all your contacts.
Camera T ake photos and rec ord videos. View them on i Phone, email them, text them, or upload them to your computer . T ap to focus on an object or area. T rim and save video clips. Upload videos straight to Y ouT ube. T ake a friend’ s picture and set iPhone to dis play it when that person calls you.
V oice Memos In the Utilities folder . Recor d voice memos with iPhone. Pla y them back on iPhone, or sync them with iT unes to listen on y our computer . Attach voic e memos to email or MMS messages. See Chapter 21 , “ V oice Memos ,” on page 1 60.
Status Icons The icons in the status bar at the t op of the screen give information about iPhone: Status icon What it means Cell signal* Shows whether you ’ re in range of the cellular network and can make and receive calls. The mor e bars, the stronger the signal.
Status icon What it means TTY Shows that iPhone is set to work with a TT Y machine. See “Using iPhone with a T eletype ( T T Y ) Machine ” on page 206. Play Show s that a song, audiobook, or podcast is playing . See “Playing Songs and Other Audio ” on page 92 .

Activa ting iPhone Y ou must ac tivate iPhone b y signing up for a ser vice plan with an iPhone ser vice carrier in your area and registering iPhone with the network. Y our iPhone may have been activat ed at the time of purchase. If it isn ’t activa ted, contact your iPhone retailer or cellular service provider .
Disconnecting iPhone from Y our Computer Y ou can disconnect i Phone from your comput er at any time. However , if y ou disconnect it while a sync is in progress , some data may not get synced until the next time you connect iPhone to your comput er .
Joining a Wi-F i Network The Wi-F i settings let you turn on Wi-Fi and join Wi-F i networks. T urn on Wi-F i: Choose S ettings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-F i on. Join a Wi-F i network: Choose Settings > Wi-F i, wait a moment as iPhone detects networks in range , then select a net work (fees ma y apply to join some Wi-Fi netw orks).
Impor tant: Roaming charges may apply . T o avoid data roaming charge s, make sure data roaming is turned o . Internet A ccess on an Air plane Airplane mode turns o the iPhone c ellular , Wi-F i, Bluetooth, and GPS transmitters and receivers t o avoid int er fering with aircraft operation.
Share an In ternet connection: 1 In Settings, choose P ersonal Hotspot (or choose General > Network > P ersonal Hotspot, if P ersonal Hots pot settings aren ’t av ailable at the top level of Settings).
Y ou can add a CalDA V calendar account. See “Syncing Calendars” on page 111 . Y ou can subscribe to iCal (.ics) calendars or impor t them from Mail. See “Subscr ibing to Calendars ” and “Impor ting Calendar File s from Mail” on page 11 6 .
Setting Up Microsof t Exchange A ccounts T o use M icrosoft Exchange on iPhone, you need to add an account with your Microsoft Exchange account settings.
Setting Up Google, Y ahoo!, and A OL Accoun ts F or many popular accounts (Google , Y ahoo!, AOL), iPhone ent ers most of the settings for you . When setting up the account , you can choose which account services you want to use with iPhone .
Basics 3 Using Apps The high-resolution Multi-T ouch screen and simple nger gestures make it easy to use iPhone apps. Opening and Switching A pps Y ou open an app on iPhone by tapping its icon on the Home screen. Return to the Home screen: Press the Home button below the dis play .
Y our most recently used apps appear at the bottom of the screen, in order star ting from the left. Flick t o see more apps. Switch t o another app: T ap an app in the recents list. Remove an ap p from the recents list: T ouch and hold the app icon until it begins to jiggle, then tap .
Flick t o scroll quick ly . Y ou can wait for the scrolling to come t o a stop , or touch anywhere on the screen to stop it immediately . T ouching the screen to stop scrolling won ’ t choose or activate an ything. T o quick ly scroll to the top of a list, w ebpage, or email, just tap the status bar .
Zooming In or Out When viewing photos , webpages, email, or maps , you can zoom in and out. Pinch your ngers together or apart. F or photos and w ebpages, y ou can double-tap (tap twice quickly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. F or maps , double-tap to zoom in and tap once with two ngers to z oom out.
The follo wing apps suppor t both por trait and landscape orientation: Mail  Safari  Messages  Notes  Contacts  Stocks  i Po d  Photos  Camera  Calculator  Movies viewed in iP od and Y ouT ube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps also appear only in landscape orientation.
Move an ic on to another screen: While arranging icons, drag an icon to the side of the screen. Create addition al Home screens: While arranging ic ons, ick to the rightmost Home screen, then drag an icon t o the right edge of the screen until a new screen appears.
iPhone creates a new f older that includes the two icons , and shows the folder’ s name . Y ou can tap the name eld and enter a di er ent name. Y ou can also create folders within iT une s. Create a f older using iT unes: With iPhone connected to your computer , select iPhone in the Devices list in iT unes .
Adding W allpaper Y ou can set an image or photo as wallpaper for the L ock screen. Y ou can also set wallpaper for y our Home screen. Y ou can choose an image that came with iPhone, a photo from your C amera Roll, or a photo synced to iPhone from y our computer .
T yping The onscreen keyboard appears anytime y ou need to type. Entering T ext Use the keyboard to enter t ext, such as contact information, email, text messages , and web addresse s. The keyboard corrects misspellings , predicts what you're typing, and learns as you use it.
T urn caps lock on Double-tap the Shift key . The Shift key turns blue, and all letters you type are uppercase. T ap the Shift k ey again to turn caps lock o . ( Y ou can turn this feature on or o in Settings > General > Keyboard.) Show numbers, punctuation, or symbols T ap the Number key .
Use spell checking to replac e a misspelled word: T ap the underlined wor d, then tap one of the suggested corrections. If none of the suggestions is correct, you can correct the spelling of the selected wor d by retyping it. T o leave the wor d unchanged, tap somewhere else in the me ssage area.
Drag the grab points to select more or less t ext. Cut or cop y text: Select text, then tap Cut or C opy . P aste text: T ap the inser tion point and tap P aste . The last text that you cut or copied is inser ted . Or select tex t and tap P aste to replace the t ext.
iPhone disconnects the keyboard when it ’ s out of range. Unpair a wireless keyboa rd from iPhone: In Settings, choose General > Bluetooth, tap next to the device name , then tap “Forget this Device .” Y ou can apply di erent la youts to a wireless keyboard .
4 T ap Print. See the status of a print job: Double-click the Home button, then tap P rint Center . The P rint Center app appears as the most r ecent app when a document is printing . A badge on the app icon shows how man y documents are queued for prin ting.
Searching Y ou can search many apps on iPhone , including Mail, Calendar , iP od , Notes , Messages, and Contacts. Y ou can sear ch an individual app, or sear ch all apps at once using Search. Go to Search: On the main Home screen, ick left to right or press the Home button.
Open apps from Search: Enter the app name , then tap to open the app directly from the search results . Use the Spotlight Search setting to s pecify which contents are sear ched and the order the results are pr esented in. See “Spotlight Search ” on page 1 95 .
F or best results: Speak into the iPhone microphone as if y ou were making a phone call. Y ou can also  use the microphone on your Bluetooth headset or c ompatible Bluetooth car kit. Speak clearly and naturally .  Say only iPhone commands and names , and numbers.
Apple Earphones with Remot e and M ic The Apple Earphone s with Remote and Mic included with i Phone featur e a microphone, vol ume but tons , and an int egra ted bu tton t hat al lows y ou t o answ er and end cal ls easily , and control audio and video playback.
Bluetooth Devices Y ou can use iPhone with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and other Bluetooth device s, such as Bluetooth headsets, car kits, and stereo headphones. T hird-par t y Bluetooth headphones may support volume and playback contr ols. See the documentation that came with your Bluetooth devic e.
Bluetooth Status The Bluetooth icon appears in the iPhone status bar at the t op of the screen: Â or : Bluetooth is on and a device is connected to iPhone. ( The color depends on the current color of the status bar .) Â : Bluetooth is on but no device is connected.
Charge the batt er y and sync iPhone: C onnect i Phone to your comput er using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable . Or connect iPhone to your computer using the included cable and the Dock, available separ ately . Unless your keyboard has a high-pow ered USB 2.
Securit y F eature s Securit y feature s help protect the information on iPhone from being accessed by others . P asscodes and Da ta Protection Y ou can set a passcode that you must enter each time y ou turn on or wake up i Phone.
Note: Find My iPhone require s a MobileMe account. MobileMe is Apple’ s online ser vice, which provides Find My iPhone f or free to iPhone 4 customers, and additional feature s with a paid subscription. MobileMe may not be available in all coun tries or regions.
Syncing and F ile Sharing 4 About Syncing Syncing copies inf ormation from your computer or online acc ount to iPhone, then keeps the information in sync by copying change s made in one location to the other .
Syncing with iT unes Y ou can set iT unes to sync any or all of the f ollowing: Contacts—names , phone numbers, addresses , email addresses , and more  Calendars—appointments and ev ents  Emai.
Y ou can set iPhone to sync with only a por tion of what ’ s on your computer . For example, you might want to sync only a group of con tacts from your address book, or only unwatched video podcasts. Impor tant: Y ou should be logged in to your own user account on y our computer before connecting iPhone.
Select “Pr efer standard denition videos ” if you want iT unes to sync standard denition instead of high denition videos (iPhone 4). Select “Con vert higher bit rate songs to 1 28 kbps AAC ” if you want iT unes to con ver t larger audio le s to the standard iT unes audio format during syncing .
W eb Browser  Y ou can sync book marks on iPhone with Safar i on a Mac, or with Safari or M icrosoft Internet Explorer on a PC. Notes  Sync notes in the Not es app on iPhone with notes in Mail on a Mac or with Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007 , or 20 1 0 on a PC.
Impor tant: If you delete an item from iT unes, it will also be deleted from iPhone the next time you sync. Photos P ane On a Mac, you can sync photos with Aperture or iPhoto 4.0.3 or later , and videos with iPhoto 6.0.6 or later . On a PC, you can sync photos with Adobe Phot oshop Elements 8.
Manually Managing Cont ent The manually managing fea ture lets you choose just the music, videos, and podcasts you want t o have on iPhone. Set up iPhone for manually managing con tent: 1 Connect iPhone to your comput er . 2 In iT unes, selec t iPhone in the sidebar .
F ile Sharing File S haring lets you transfer les between iPhone and y our computer . Y ou can share les created with a c ompatible app and saved in a supported format. Apps that support le sharing appear in the File Sharing Apps list in iT unes.
Phone 5 Phone Calls Mak ing a call on iPhone is as simple as tapping a name and number in your contacts , tapping one of your fav orites, or tapping a recent call to r eturn it.
Dialing Manually Y ou can use the keypad to manually dial a phone number . Dial a number: T ap Keypad, enter the number , then tap Call. If you copy a phone number to the clipboard , you can paste it to the numeric keypad. P aste a number to the keypad: T ap the screen above the keyboard , then tap Past e.
When voice dialing a number , speak each digit separately—f or example, say “f our one ve , ve ve ve , one tw o one two.” Note: F or the “800” area code in the U.S., you can say “ eight hundred .” Pre vent v oice dialing when iPhone is locked: In Settings, choose G eneral > P asscode Lock and turn V oice Dial o .
While On a Call When you ’ re on a call, the screen shows call options. The call options may v ar y , depending on which iPhone you’ re using. Mute your line T ap Mute. Y ou can still hear the caller , but the caller can’ t hear you. Use the numeric keypad to enter inf ormation T ap Keypad.
Second Calls During a call, you can make or receive another call. I f you receiv e a second call, iPhone beeps and shows the caller ’ s information and a list of options. Note: Mak ing and receiving a second call may be an optional service in some countries or regions .
If your ser vice includes conf erence calling , iPhone always has a second line a vailable in addition to the conf erence call. Note: Y ou can’ t make a F ace Time video call when you’ re on a conferenc e call. F ace Time F ace Time video calls (i Phone 4) let you see as well as hear the person y ou’ re talking to.
When the voice call is e stablished, you see the image from the other person ’ s iPhone. A picture-in-picture window shows the image from your iPhone that the other person sees. Y ou can drag the window to an y corner . Y ou can use F ace T ime in por trait or landscape orientation.
Using a Bluetooth Devic e for Calls Y ou can make and receive calls using a Bluetooth device paired with iPhone . See “P airing a Bluetooth Device with iPhone” on page 47 . F or information about using a Bluetooth device to make and rec eive calls, see the documentation that came with the device .
Visual V oicemail On iPhone, visual voicemail lets y ou see a list of your messages and choose which one s to listen to or delet e, without having to listen to instructions or prior messages. Note: Visual voicemail may not be av ailable in all countries or regions , or may be an optional ser vice.
T ap V oicemail to see a list of your message s. Skip to any point in a message: Drag the playhead. Unheard messages Play/Pause Contact info Scrubber bar Speakerphone (Audio, when a Bluetooth device is connected. T ap to choose audio output.) Return the call Listen to a message: T ap the message.
Con tac ts F rom a contact’ s Info screen, a quick tap lets you make a phone call, create a new email message , nd the location of their address, and more. S ee “ Searching Contacts” on page 214 . F avorite s F avorites giv es you quick access to y our most-used phone numbers.
When Call F or war ding is on, the call for warding ( ) icon appears in the status bar (GSM models). Y ou must be in range of the cellular network when you set iPhone to forward calls, or calls won ’t be forwarded. On a CDMA model, you turn call for warding on or o by dialing special codes.
Ringtones and the Ring/Silent Swit ch iPhone comes with ringtones y ou can use for incoming calls , Clock alarms, and the Clock timer . Y ou can also purchase ringtones from songs in iT unes. Ring/Silent Swit ch and Vibrate Modes A switch on the side of iPhone makes it easy to turn the ringer on or o .
International C alls Making International C alls from Y our Home Area F or information about making international calls from your home area, including rates and other charges that ma y apply , contact your carrier or go to your carrier ’ s website.
Y ou can also turn o cellular data to prevent an y cellular data usage. T urn o Cellular Data: In Settings, choose G eneral > Network, then tap the Cellular Data switch to turn it o . Set iPhone to add the correct prex when dialing from another coun tr y : In Settings, tap Phone , then turn International Assist on.
Mail 6 Mail works with MobileMe, M icrosoft Exchange , and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo!, Google , and AOL—as well as other industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive phot os, videos, and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
Checking and R eading Email The Mail icon on the Home screen shows the number of unr ead messages in your inbox es. Y ou may have other unread me ssages in other mailboxe s. Numberofunread emailsinyourinboxes In Mail, the Mailboxes scr een gives you quick acce ss to all your inbox es and other mailbox es.
T urn “Organiz e By Thread” on or o: In Settings, choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars,” and tap the switch to turn Organiz e By Thread on or o . See “ Mail” on page 204. If you set up more than one account , the Accounts section of the Mailbox es screen lets you access y our accounts.
Y ou can get contact information for the organiz er and other invitees , set an aler t, add notes to the ev ent, and add comments that are included in your r esponse emailed to the organiz er . Y ou can accept, tentatively accept , or decline the invitation.
Viewing Attachments iPhone displays image a ttachments in many commonly used f ormats ( JPEG, GIF , and TIFF) inline with the text in email messages. iPhone can play many types of audio attachments , such as MP3, AAC, W A V , and AIFF .
Open an attached le with another app: T ouch and hold the attachment, then choose an app. I f no apps are av ailable, you can open the attachment in Quick L ook. Save an a ttached photo to your Camer a Roll album: T ap the photo , then tap Save Image.
Sending Email Y ou can send an email message to anyone who has an email addr ess. Compose and send a message: 1 T ap . 2 T ype a name or email address in the T o eld, or tap to add a name from your contacts. As you type an email address , matching email addresses fr om your contacts list appear below .
F or ward a message Open a me ssage and tap , then tap F or ward. Add one or more email addresses , type your message, then tap Send. When you forward a message , you can include the les or images attached to the original message .
Delete multiple messages: When viewing a list of messages, tap Edit, select the messages you w ant to delete , then tap Delete. Move a me ssage to another mailbox or folder: When viewing a message, tap , then choose a mailbox or folder . T ap Accounts to choose a mailbox or f older for another account.
Searching Email Y ou can search the T o, From, and Subject elds of email messages. Mail searches the downloaded messages in the curren tly open mailbox. For MobileMe , Exchange , and some IMAP mail accounts , you can also search messages on the server .
Safari 7 Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpages on iPhone as if y ou were on your computer . Create bookmarks on i Phone and sync them with your comput er . Add web clips to quickly access your fa vorite sites directly from the Home screen. Print webpages , PDFs, and other documents that open in Quick Look.
Opening W ebpages Open a webpage: T ap the address eld (on the left side of the title bar), then typ e the web address and tap Go . If the address eld isn ’t visible, tap the status bar at the top of the screen to quickly scroll to the address eld a t the top of the webpage.
Return to the previous or next page T ap or at the bottom of the screen. Return to a recen tly viewed page T ap and tap History . T o clear the histor y list, tap Clear . Create a preaddr essed Mail message T ouch and hold an email web link, then tap New Message.
Entering T ext and Filling Out F or ms Some webpages hav e text elds and forms to ll out. Y ou can set Safar i to remember names and passwords of w ebsites you visit and ll out te x t elds automatically with information from C ontacts. S ee “Safari ” on page 208.
P rinting W ebpages , PDFs, and O ther D ocuments Y ou can print webpages, PDFs, and other documents that open in Quick Look from Safari. Prin t a webpage, PDF , or Quick L ook document: T ap , then tap Print.
Edit a bookmark or bookmark folder: T ap , choose the folder that has the bookmar k or folder you w ant to edit, then tap Edit. T hen do one of the following: Â T o make a new folder , tap New Folder . Â T o delete a bookmark or folder , tap , then tap Delete .
i Po d 8 Use the iP o d app to enjoy y our favorite music , widescreen videos, and more. Browse your cont ent on iPhone by playlists , ar tists, songs, videos, or other categories, or browse your album artwork using Cov er Flow . Play your music on AirPlay s peakers or sound systems , or watch your videos on a T V using AirPla y and Apple T V .
Playing Songs and Other Audio Y ou can browse conten t on iPhone by playlists, ar tists, songs, videos, and other categories , or browse your album artwork using Cover F low . Playlist folders , which y ou can sync from iT unes, let you organize pla ylists into groups.
P ause a song T ap , or press the center button on the iPhone earphones . Resume playback T ap , or pre ss the center button on the iPhone earphones . Raise or lower the volume Drag the v olume slider or use the buttons on the side of iPhone. Y ou can also use the volume buttons on the iPhone earphones.
Additional A udio Con trols T o display additional controls , tap the album ar t work on the Now Pla ying screen. The repeat , Genius, and shue controls appear along with the scrubber bar . Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time , and the song number .
P odcast and Audiobook Con trols Additional con trols and information appear on the Now Pla ying screen when you begin playback. The email, 30-second repeat , and playback speed con trols appear along with the scrubber bar . Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time, and the episo de or chapter number .
Con trol music playback Say “play ” or “pla y music.” T o pause, say “pause” or “pause music.” Y ou can also say “next song” or “previous song .” Play an album, ar tist, or playlist Say “play ,” then say “album,” “artist,” or “playlist” and the name.
Play an y track T ap the track. Drag up or down to scroll through the tracks . Return to the artwork T ap the title bar . Or tap again. Play or pa use the current song T ap or .
Using Genius on iPhone Genius nds songs in your iT unes librar y that go great together . A Genius playlist is a collection of songs that are picked for you to go with a song y ou choose from your library . A Genius M ix is a selection of songs of the same k ind of music.
Y ou can also make a G enius playlist of songs that go great with the song y ou’ re playing . T ap the album ar t work on the Now Pla ying screen to displa y additional controls , then tap . Save a Genius pla ylist: In the playlist, tap Save. The playlist is saved in P laylists with the title of the song you picked.
When you edit a pla ylist and then sync iPhone to your computer , the playlist is synced to your iT unes library . Delete a playlist: In Playlists , tap the playlist you want t o delete, then tap Delete (scroll to the top of the list to r eveal the Delete button).
P ause a video T ap , or press the cent er button on the iPhone earphones. Resume playback T ap , or pr ess the center button on the iPhone earphones . Raise or lower the volume Drag the volume slider . Y ou can also use the volume buttons on the iPhone earphones.
W atching Rented Mo vies and T V Shows Y ou can rent movies from the iT unes Store and watch them on iPhone . Y ou can download rent ed movies and T V shows directly to iPhone , or transfer movies fr om iT unes on your computer to iPhone . (Rented movies and T V shows may not be av ailable in all countries or regions.
