Installing the SIM Card in iPhone 4S Micro SIM card Micro SIM card tray Paper clip or SIM eject tool Install the SIM card: Insert the end of a small pap er clip or SIM eject tool into the hole on the SIM card tray . Pull out the SIM card tray and place the SIM car d in the tray as shown.
Setting up mail and other accounts iPhone works with iCloud , Microsoft Exchange, and many of the most popular Internet-based mail, contacts, and calendar ser vice providers . If you don ’t already ha ve a mail account, you can set up a free iCloud accoun t when you rst set up iPhone, or later in Settings > iCloud.
 Mail, Contacts, Calendars —Keep your mail contacts, calendars, notes, and reminders up to date across all your device s.  Backup —Back up iPhone to iCloud automa tically when connected to power and W i-F i. See “Backing up i Phone ” on page 17 3 .
Syncing with iT unes Syncing with iT unes copies information from y our computer to iPhone , and vice versa. Y ou can sync by connecting iPhone to your comput er using the Dock Connector to USB Cable, or you can set up iT unes to sync wirelessly using Wi-Fi.
Basics 3 Using apps The high-resolution Multi-T ouch screen and simple nger gestures make it easy to use iPhone apps. Opening and switching apps Pr ess the Home button to go to the Home screen and see y our apps. Open an app: T ap it. T o return to the Home screen, press the Home button again.
Scrolling Drag up or down to scroll. On some screens such as webpages , you can also scroll side to side . Dragging your nger to scroll w on ’t choose or activate an ything on the screen. Flick to scr oll quick ly . Y ou can wait for the scr olling to come to a stop , or touch the screen to st op it immediately .
Zooming in or out When viewing photos , webpages, email, or maps, you can zoom in and out. Pinch your ngers together or apart. F or photos and webpages, you can double-tap (tap twice quickly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. For maps , double-tap to zoom in and tap once with tw o ngers to zoom out.
Cust omizing the Home screen Rearranging apps Y ou can customize the la yout of app icons on the Home screen—including the apps in the Dock along the bottom of the screen. If you want, arrange them over multiple Home screens. Y ou can also organize apps b y collecting them in folders.
Create a f older: T ouch an app until the Home screen apps begin to jiggle , then drag the app onto another app. iPhone creates a new f older that includes the two apps , and shows the folder’ s name. Y ou can tap the name eld and enter a di erent name .
T yping The onscreen keyboard appears anytime y ou need to type. Entering t ext Use the keyboard to enter t ext. The keyboard corrects misspellings, predicts what you ’ re typing, and learns as you use it. D epending on the app you ’ re using, the intelligent keyboard may suggest corrections as you type, to help prevent mistyped words.
Auto-c orrection and spell checking F or many languages , iPhone automatically corrects misspellings or makes suggestions as y ou typ e. When iPhone suggests a wor d, you can accept the suggestion without interrupting y our t yping . Note: F or a list of suppor ted languages , see www .
Editing text The touchscreen makes it easy to change t ext you’v e entered . An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the insertion point right where you need it. Grab points let you quickly selec t more or less text. Y ou can also cut, copy , and paste text and photos within apps , or across apps.
F or each language, you can make separate selections for both the onscreen software and any external hardware keyboards . The software keyboard layout det ermines the layout of the keyboard on the iPhone screen. T he hardware keyboard lay out determines the layout of an Apple Wireless Keyboard connected to iPhone.
Prin ting AirPrin t AirPrin t lets you print wirelessly to AirP rint-enabled printers . Y ou can pr int fr om: Mail—email messages and attachments that can be view ed in Quick Look  Photos and Cam.
Searching Y ou can search many apps on iPhone , including Con tacts, Mail, Calendar , Music, M essages , Notes, and Reminders. Y ou can search an individual app , or all apps at once. Search iPhone: Go to the Search screen. (From the rst Home screen, ick right or press the Home button .
V oice Con trol V oice Con trol lets you make phone calls and control music pla yback using voice commands. On iPhone 4S, you can also use Siri to con trol iPhone by voice . See Chapter 4 , “ Siri,” on page 39 . Note: V oice Contr ol may not be available in all language s.

Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic The Apple Earphone s with Remote and Mic included with i Phone f eature a microphone , volume buttons, and an integrated butt on that allows you to answ er and end calls easily , and c ontrol audio and video playback.
AirPla y Y ou can stream music, photos, and video wirelessly to your HDT V using AirPla y and Apple T V . Y ou can also use AirPlay to str eam audio to an Airport Express base station. O ther AirPlay-enabled receivers ar e available from thir d-par ties.
P air an Apple Wireless K eyboard with iPhone: 1 Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on. 2 Pr ess the power button on the Apple Wireless Keyboard to turn it on. 3 On iPhone, select the k eyboard listed under Device s. 4 T ype the passkey on the keyboard as instructed, then press Return.
Note: Connecting iPhone to a power outlet can start an iCloud backup or wireless iT unes syncing. See “Backing up i Phone ” on page 17 3 and “Syncing with iT unes” on page 18 . Charge the batt er y and sync iPhone: Connect iPhone to your comput er using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable .
Securit y f eatures Securit y fea tures help protect the information on iPhone from being acce ssed by others. P asscodes and data pr otection Y ou can set a passcode that you must en ter each time you turn on or wake up iPhone.
Cleaning iPhone Clean iPhone immediately if it comes in c ontact with any contaminants tha t may cause stains , such as ink, dyes , makeup, dir t, food, oils, or lotions. T o clean iPhone, disconnect all cables and turn o iPhone (press and hold the On/O button, then slide the onscreen slider).
Siri 4 What is Siri? Siri i s the i ntell igent persona l assis tant that he lps y ou get things d one jus t by t alking . Siri understands natural speech, so you don ’t hav e to learn specic commands or remember keywords. Y ou can ask things in di erent ways .
Using Siri Starting Siri Siri comes to lif e with the press of a button. Start Siri: Press the Home button until Siri appears. Y ou ’ll hear two quick beeps and see “ What can I help you with?” on the screen. Just begin speaking. The microphone icon lights up to let y ou k now that Siri hears y ou talk ing .
If Siri doesn ’t res pond when you bring iPhone to your ear , start with the screen facing you, so your hand rotates on the w ay up. Cancel a request Say “ cancel,” tap , or press the Home button . Stop a phone call you started with Siri Before Phone opens , press the Home button .
Onscreen guide Siri gives you example s of things you can say , r ight on screen. Ask Siri “what can you do ” or tap when Siri rst appears. Handsfree Siri Y ou can use Siri with the Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic that came with your iPhone , or with other suppor ted headphones and Bluet ooth headsets.
Location Services Because Siri knows locations like “ current,” “home ,” and “work,” it can remind y ou to do a cer tain task when you leav e a location or arrive at a location. T ell Siri “Remind me to call my wife when I leave the oc e,” and Siri does just that.
Noisy envir onments In a noisy environmen t, hold iPhone close to your mouth, but don ’t talk directly into the bottom edge. Continue to s peak clearly and naturally . T ap when you nish speaking . Y ou can also tr y holding iPhone to y our ear to speak to Siri.
So that Siri knows who you’ re referring to when you ask t o make a call, make sure t o introduce yourself to Siri. See “ T elling Sir i about yourself ” on page 41 . Stop a phone call you started with Siri Before Phone opens , press the Home button .

Including location info lets Siri remind y ou about the item when you approach or leav e a location. A location can be your current location (“her e”), or an address in Contacts. T o let Siri k now about your home and work locations , see “ T elling Siri about yourself ” on page 41 .

Phone 5 Phone calls Making a call Making a call on i Phone is as simple as tapping a name or number in your c ontacts, using Siri to say “ call bob ” (iPhone 4S), tapping one of your favorites , or tapping a recent call to r eturn it.
Dialing manually Y ou can use the keypad to dial a phone number manually . Dial a number: T ap Keypad , enter the number , then tap Call. P aste a number to the keypad T ap the screen above the keyboard, then tap Past e. Enter a soft (2-second) pause T ouch the “*” key until a comma appears.
While on a call When you ’ re on a call, the screen shows call options. Mute your line. iPhone 4 or later: Touch and hold to put your call on hold. Dial a number or enter numbers. Use the speakerphone or a Bluetooth device. Get contact info. iPhone 4 or later: Make a FaceTime call.
Conf erence calls With GSM, you can set up a conf erence call to talk with up to ve people a t a time, depending on your carrier . Note: Confer ence calling may be an optional service in some areas. Contact your carrier for information. Create a c onference call: 1 Make a call.
Important: Y ou should not rely on wireless devices f or essential communications , such as medical emergencies. Use of iPhone to call emergency ser vices ma y not work in all areas or all operating conditions.
Make a F ace Time c all using Siri or V oice Contr ol Pre ss and hold the Home button until you hear the tone. With Siri (iPhone 4S), you can also just hold iPhone to your ear while the screen is on. Say “F ace T ime ,” followed by the name of the person to call.
Checking voicemail When you tap Phone , iPhone shows the number of missed calls and unheard v oicemail messages. T ap V oicemail to see a list of your message s. Drag the playhead to skip to any point in a message. Unheard messages Play/Pause Contact info Scrubber bar Speakerphone (Audio, when a Bluetooth device is connected.
F av orites F avorites give s you quick access to your fr equently used phone numbers. Add a con tact ’ s phone number to your fav orites list: T ap Contacts, then choose a contact. T ap “ Add to F avorites.” Choose a phone number or email address (for F ace T ime calls).
Caller ID Caller ID displa ys your name or phone number to the person you call—if the recipien t ’ s equipment has that capability and you hav en’ t turned o or block ed the fea ture. Note: F or F ace Time calls, your phone number is displa yed even if caller ID is turned o or blocked.
T urn o V oice Roaming on a CDMA network Go to Settings > General > Network. T urning Voic e Roaming o disables phones calls when you ’ re outside of your carrier ’ s network. T urn o Data Roaming Go to Settings > General > Network.
Mail 6 Mail works with iCloud , Microsof t Ex change, and many of the most popular mail systems— including Y ahoo!, Google , Hotmail, and AOL—as well as other industry-standard POP3 and IMAP mail systems. Y ou can send and receiv e photos, videos, and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
Add an email recipien t to your contacts list T ap the message and, if necessar y , tap Details to see the r ecipients. Then tap a name or email address and tap Crea te New Contact or “ Add to Existing Contact.” Flag or mark a message as unr ead Open the message and , if necessary , tap Details.
Using links and detected data iPhone detects web links, phone numbers, email addresses, dates, and other t ypes of inf ormation that you can use to open a w ebpage, create a preaddressed email me ssage, create or add information to a con tact, or per form some other useful action.
Organizing mail Y ou can or ganiz e mess ages i n an y mailbo x, fold er , or s earch resul ts wind ow . Y ou can de lete o r mark messages as read . Y ou can also move messages fr om one mailbox or folder to another in the same account or between di erent acc ounts.
Settings may vary , based on the type of account y ou’ re setting up. Y our service provider or system administrator can pro vide the information you need to en ter . Change an account’ s settings: G o to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, choose an account, then make the changes you want.
F etch New Data This setting lets you turn P ush on or o for iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Y ahoo!, and any other push accounts on iPhone. Push accoun ts deliver new information to iPhone whenev er new information appea rs on th e server ( some de lays may o ccur) an d ther e’ s an I ntern et con nection.
Safari 7 Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpage s. Create book marks on iPhone and sync them with your computer . Add web clips to the Home screen f or quick access to your fa vorite sites. Print w ebpages, PDFs, and other documents. Use Reading List to collect sites to r ead later .
Stop a webpage from loading T ap . Reload a webpage T ap in the address eld. Close a page T ap , then tap by the page . Protect priva te information and block some websites from tr acking your behavior Go to Settings > Safari and turn on Private Br owsing.
Searching The search eld in the upper-right corner lets you sear ch the web , and the current page or PDF . Search the web , and the curr ent page or searchable PDF : Enter text in the search eld. Â T o search the web: T ap one of the suggestions that appear , or tap Search.
Music 8 Adding music and audio T o get music and other audio cont ent onto iPhone: Purchase and do wnload content fr om the iT unes Store on iPhone . See Chapter  21 , “ iT unes Store ,” on page 11 5 . ( Y ou can also go to the iT unes Store from Music by tapping the S tore button when browsing .
View the Now Playing scr een: T ap Now Playing. Next/Fast-forward Play/Pause T rack list Back V olume Previous/ Rewind AirPlay Customize the br owse buttons T ap More, tap Edit, then drag an icon over the button you wan t to replace.
Additional audio c ontrols T o display additional con trols, tap the album ar twork on the Now Playing scr een. Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time, and the song number . The song ’ s lyrics also appear , if y ou’v e added them to the song in iT unes.

Searching audio cont ent Y ou can search the titles , ar tists, albums, and composers of songs, po dcasts , and other audio conten t on iPhone. Search music: Enter text in the search eld at the top of a song list , playlist, ar tist list, or other view of your Music cont ent.
Save a Genius playlist In the playlist, tap Save . The playlist is saved in Pla ylists with the title of the song you picked. Refresh a Genius playlist In the playlist, tap Refresh. Make a Genius playlist using a di erent song T ap Genius Playlist, then tap New and pick a song.
Home Sharing Home Sharing lets you play music , movies , and T V shows on iPhone from the iT unes librar y on your Mac or PC. iPhone and your computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. On your computer , iTune s must be open, with Home Sharing turned on and logged in using the same Apple ID as Home Sharing on iPhone.
Messages 9 Sending and receiving message s W ARNING: F or imp ortant information about driving safely , see the Impor tant Product Information Guide at www .apple.com/support/manuals/iphone. Messages supports tex t messages with other SMS and MMS devic es, and with other iOS devices using iMessage.
Use emoji characters Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, then tap Emoji to make that keyboard available. T o enter Emoji characters when typing a message, tap to bring up the Emoji keyboard. See “Switching keyboards” on page 16 9 .
Copy a phot o or video T ouch and hold the attachment, then tap Copy . Save con tact information you receiv e T ap the contact bubble, then tap Create New C ontact or “ Add to Existing Contact.” Editing con versa tions If you want to keep just part of a conversation, you can delete the parts you don ’t want.
Calenda r 10 About Calendar Calendar makes it easy to stay on schedule . Y ou can view individual calendars, or several calendars at once. Y ou can view your events by day , by month, or in a list. Y ou can search the titles , invitee s, locations, and notes of events .
Edit or delete a calendar T ap Calendars, then tap Edit. Select calendars to view T ap Calendars, then tap to selec t the calendars you wan t to view . The events f or all selected calendars appear in a single calendar on iPhone. Adding ev ents Y ou can create and updat e calendar events directly on iPhone.
Subscribing to calendars Y ou can subscribe to calendars that use the iCalendar (.ics) f ormat. Many calendar-based ser vices suppor t calendar subscriptions, including iCloud, Y ahoo!, Google , and the iCal application in OS X. Subscribed calendars are read-only .
Photos 11 Viewing photos and videos Photos lets you view phot os and videos on iPhone, in your : Camera Roll album—photos and videos you t ook with either of the built-in cameras, or saved  from a.

Camer a 12 About Camera Built-in cameras let you take both still photos and videos. iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S include a front camera f or F ace Time and self-por traits (in addition to the camera on the back), and an LED ash. T ap a person or object to focus and set exposure.
T ak ing photos and videos T o quickly open Camera when iPhone is locked, press the Home button or the On/O button, then drag up. T ake a photo: Make sure the Camera/Video switch is set to , then aim iPhone and tap . Y ou can also take a photo by pressing the v olume up button.
Viewing, sharing , and printing The photos and videos you take with Camer a are saved in your C amera Roll album. View your Camera Roll album: Flick left-to-right, or tap the thumbnail image in the lower-left corner of the screen. Y ou can also view your Camera Roll album in the Photos app .
Uploading photos and videos to y our computer Y ou can upload the photos and videos you take with Camera t o photo applications on your computer , such as i Photo on a Mac. Upload photos and videos to y our computer: Connect iPhone to your computer using the Dock Connector to USB Cable .
