Chapter 2 Basics 23 Adjusting the V olume When you ’ re on the phone or listening to songs , movies, or other media, the butt ons on the side of iPhone adjust the audio volume . Other wise, the buttons control the volume for the ringer , aler ts, and other sound effects.

3 3 Phone 29 T ap P hone to make calls, view and add con tacts, and check voicemail. Making a call on i Phone is as simple as tapping a name or number in your c ontacts list or tapping a contact in your fav orites list. Or tap the name of a recent caller to return the call.

Chapter 3 Phone 32 Decline a call m Do one of the following:  Pre ss the Sleep/W ake button twice quickly . Sleep/Wake button  Pre ss and hold the mic button on the headset for about tw o seconds, then let go. When you let go , two low beeps confirm that the call was declined.
Chapter 3 Phone 33 Â T o end the first call and answer the new one , tap End Call + Answer . T o Do this Switch back to the first call and put the second call on hold T ap the first call at the top of the screen, or tap Swap . Merge the two calls, so all three of you can talk T ap Merge Calls.
Chapter 3 Phone 34 Visual V oicemail When you decline or don ’t answer a call, the caller hears a recorded gr eeting and can leave a v oicemail message. On iPhone, visual voicemail lets you see a list of your messages and choose which ones to list en to or delete , without having to list en to prior messages or voic e instructions.
Chapter 3 Phone 35 Checking V oicemail On iPhones with visual voicemail, the V oicemail screen shows y our voicemail messages . Unheard messages ha ve a blue dot nex t to them. Listen to a new v oicemail message If you receive visual v oicemail, tap V oicemail, then tap the new message.
Chapter 3 Phone 36 Returning a Call It ’ s simple to return a call from visual v oicemail. m T ap a message, then tap Call Back. Deleting Messages Deleted visual voicemail message s are saved on iPhone f or a time, then they are automatically and permanently erased .
, Chapter 3 Phone 37 Recording Y our V oicemail Greeting The voicemail gr eeting, or outgoing message, is what a caller hears when you decline or don ’t answer a call, and the call is sent to voicemail. A default greeting may be provided by y our carrier .

F or example, with a single tap , create a new email message addr essed to your con tact, visit their website , or locate their home or business in Maps.
Chapter 3 Phone 40 Ringtones iPhone comes with a number of ringtones that y ou can use for incoming calls , Clock alarms, and the Clock timer . Chapter 5 Safari 55 Opening Multiple Webpage s at Once Y ou can have mor e than one webpage open at a time. Some links automatically open a new page instead of replacing the curren t one. The number inside the pages icon at the bottom of the screen shows how many pages are open.

If a video contains chapters , you can sk ip to the next or previous chapter , or bring up a list and start playing at any chapter that you choose.

Scale a video to fill the screen or fit to the screen T ap to make the video fill the screen. 7 7 Applica tions 68 Te x t Sending and Receiving T ext Messages Y ou can send and receive t ext messages anytime you ’ re in range of the cell network. If you can make a call, you can send a text message. Depending on your phone plan, you may be char ged for text messages you send or r eceive.

Chapter 7 Applications 81 Maps Maps provides street maps , satellite photos, and hybrid views of locations in many of the world’ s countries . Y ou can get detailed driving dir ections and, in some areas, traffic information.

Chapter 8 Settings 92 Wi-F i Wi-Fi settings det ermine when iPhone uses local Wi-F i networks to connect to the Internet. If no Wi-F i networks are available , or you’ve turned Wi-Fi off , then iPhone connects to the Internet via your c ellular network, when available.
