Chapter 1 iPod Basics 5 iP od at a Glance Get to know the controls on iP od: Using iP od Con trols The contr ols on iP od are easy to find and use. Pr ess any button t o turn on iP od. T he main menu appears. Use the Click Wheel and Center button to na vigate through onscreen menus , play songs, change settings, and view information.

Chapter 1 iPod Basics 7 Scrolling Quickly Through Long Lists If you have mor e than 1 00 songs, videos, or other items, you can scroll quickly through a long list by moving your thumb quickly on the Click Wheel.
8 Chapter 1 iPod Basics T urning off the Click Wheel Sound When you scroll through menu it ems, you can hear a clicking sound through the iPod internal speaker to let y ou know the Click Wheel is w orking. If you like, you can turn the Click Wheel sound off.
Chapter 1 iPod Basics 9 Using iP od Menus When you turn on iP od, y ou see the main menu. Choose menu items to perform functions and go to other menus. Icons along the top of the screen show iP od status. Adding or Remo ving Items Fr om the Main Menu Y ou might want to add often-used items to the iP od main menu.
10 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Setting the Back light Timer Y ou can set the back light to turn on and illuminate the screen for a c er tain amount of time when you press a butt on or use the Click Wheel. T he default is 1 0 seconds. m Choose Settings > Backlight Timer , and then choose the time you want.
Chapter 1 iPod Basics 11 Note: The USB por t on your keyboard doesn ’t provide enough pow er . Y ou must connect iP od to a USB port on your computer . By default, iT unes syncs songs on iPod a utomatically when you connect it to your computer . When iT unes is finished, you can disconnect iP od.
12 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Disconnecting iP od It ’ s important not to disconnect iPod fr om your computer while music is being loaded . Y ou can easily see if it ’ s OK to disconnect iP od by looking at the iPod scr een. Important: Don ’t disconnect iPod if y ou see the “Do not disconnect ” message.
Chapter 1 iPod Basics 13 T o ejec t iP od: m Click the Eject button ( C ) next to iPod in the list of devic es in the iT unes Source pane. If you’ re using a Mac, you can eject iPod b y dragging the iP od icon on the desktop to the T rash.
14 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Charging the iP od Battery Y ou can charge the iPod battery in two ways: Â Connect iP od to your computer . Â Use the iP od USB Pow er Adapter , available separately. T o charge the battery using your computer: m Connect iP od to a high-power USB por t on your comput er .

Note: If you have an optional iP od Dock Connector to F ireWire cable , you can also connect iP od to a Fir eWire port on your computer or to an iP od Pow er Adapter (with a Fir eWire port) that ’ s plugged into an electrical outlet.
2 16 2 Music F eatur es With iP od, you can take your music and audio collection with you wherev er you go . Read this section to learn about loading music and listening to iP od. Y ou use i P od by impor ting songs, audiobooks, videos, and podcasts (radio-style audio shows) into y our computer and then loading them onto iP od.
Chapter 2 Music Features 17 Impor ting Music into Y our C omputer T o listen to music on iP od, you first need to get that music int o iT unes on your computer . There are thr ee ways of getting music and other a udio into iT unes: Â Purchase music , a udiobooks, and videos, or download podcasts online from the iT unes Store.
18 Chapter 2 Music Features T o find songs, audiobooks, videos, and podcasts: Y ou can browse or search the iT unes Store to find the album, song, or ar tist you ’re looking for .
Chapter 2 Music Features 19 Impor ting Music F rom Y our Audio CDs Int o iT unes F ollow these instructions to get music from your CDs in to iT unes. T o impor t music from an audio CD into i T unes: 1 Insert a CD into your computer and open iT unes.

Adding Songs Already on Y our Computer t o the iT unes Librar y If you have songs on y our computer encoded in file f ormats that iT unes suppor ts, you can easily add the songs to iT unes.
Chapter 2 Music Features 21 Loading Music and P odcasts onto iP od After your music is imported and organized in iT unes, you can easily load it ont o iP od. T o set how music is loaded from y our computer onto iP od, you connect i P od to your computer , and then use iT unes preferences t o choose iP od settings.
22 Chapter 2 Music Features While music is being loaded from your comput er onto iP od, the iT unes status window shows progress , and the iP od icon in the Source pane flashes r ed. When the update is done, a message in iT unes says “iPod updat e is complete.
Chapter 2 Music Features 23 Note: When you manage songs and video yourself , y ou must always eject iP od from iT unes before you disc onnect it. T o add a song, video, or other item to iP od: 1 In the iT unes Source pane, click Music or another Library item.
24 Chapter 2 Music Features T o manually manage podcasts: 1 In iT unes, select i P od in the Source pane and click the Summar y tab . 2 Select “Manually manage music and videos” and click Apply . 3 In the Source pane , selec t the P odcasts librar y and drag the podcasts you want to iP od.
Chapter 2 Music Features 25 When you see the Now Pla ying screen, you can use the Click Wheel to change the volume. Y ou can press the C enter button multiple times fr om the Now Playing screen to get to other information and options , such as the rating scr een for songs and audiobooks , album art, podcast inf ormation, reading s peed, and more.
26 Chapter 2 Music Features T o play songs in the On-The-Go playlist: m Choose Music > Playlists > On-The-Go and choose a song . T o remove a song from the On-The-Go pla ylist: m Select a song in the playlist, and hold down the Center button un til the song title flashes.
Chapter 2 Music Features 27 Y ou can press Play to hear the curren tly selected song play while you select the maximum volume limit. 3 Pr ess the Cent er button to set the maximum volume limit. A triangle on the volume bar indicates the maximum v olume limit.
28 Chapter 2 Music Features 4 Use the Click Wheel to move the volume limit to the maximum lev el on the volume bar . This remov es any re striction on volume. 5 Pr ess the Cent er button to accept the change. Note: If you forget the c ombination, you can restore iP od.

If you don ’t see artwork, either that song doesn ’t have album artwork, or you need to set iT unes to allow iP od to display album artwork (see above).

3 31 3 Video F eatures Y ou can purchase videos and download video podcasts at the iT unes Store , and then load them onto your iP od. Y ou can watch videos on iP od or on a T V connected to iP od. Read this section to learn about downloading and viewing videos.

36 Chapter 3 Video Features W atching Videos on a T V Connected to iP od If you have an iP od A V Cable , you can watch videos on a T V connected to your iP od. First y ou set iP od to displa y videos on a T V , then connect i P od to your T V , and then pla y a video.
Chapter 3 Video Features 37 Y our T V must hav e RCA video and audio ports. T o view a video on your T V: 1 Connect iP od to your T V (see above). 2 T urn on your T V and set it to display fr om the input por ts connected to iP od. See the documentation that came with your T V for more information.
4 38 4 Photo F eatures Y ou can impor t digital photos to your computer and load them onto iP od. Y ou can view your photos on iP od or as a slideshow on y our T V .

If you ’ re using Mac OS X v1 0.4 or later , you can use iT unes to sync the contacts and calendar information on iP od with Address Book and iCal.
Chapter 5 Extra Features and Accessories 51 The next time you want to sync iP od, you can simply open iSync and click Sync Now . Y ou can also choose to have iP od sync automatically when you connect it. Note: iSync loads information from y our computer onto iP od.

First, mak e sure iP od is charged. T o reset iP od: 1 T oggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
