It has two slots that can accept SDRAM Small Outline Dual Inline Memor y Modules (SO-DIMMs).
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Memory 22 Removal Pr ocedure T ouch a metal sur face inside the battery bay to discharge any static electricity . Put on an ESD wrist strap . In one swift motion, use one nger to move the lever to the left and release it.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Memory 23 Holding the memor y cards b y the corners, slide them out from the battery bay . Important: Do not touch the gold connectors. Handle the card only by its edges. Note: A memory card might show a white residue when you r emove it.

Carefully lift up the hard drive connector from the bottom case . This action automatically disconnects the hard drive board from the sleep LED/IR rec eiver ex cable.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Hard Drive C onnec tor 67 Replacement C aution: Note the tiny connector at the end of the hard driv e board. It connects to the sleep LED/ IR receiver board a t the front right corner of the computer via a tiny ex cable.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Hard Drive C onnec tor 68 Pull up the hard driv e connec tor cable that runs along the bott om edge of the optical drive. Note the three cable routing guide s when reinstalling the cable. Use the two pull tabs to disconnect the optical drive ex cable and the L VDS cable.

MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — F an 72 Pr ocedure P eel up the strip of tape that overlaps the fan near the optical drive. Remove the screws fr om the fan: • 6-mm long screw from the upper left • 3-mm long screw from the upper right (normally hidden underneath the cable bundles) 1.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — F an 73 Tilt up the fan and disconnect the fan cable from the logic board. Holding the fan tilted up from the bottom case , peel away the adhesive f oam that overlaps the fan and the heatsink.

MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 76 Starting at the lower bracket of the heatsink, star t to tilt it up to loosen it from the logic board. Holding the heatsink by its edges , tilt it up and disc onnec t the two thermistor connectors from the logic board .
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 77 Replacement C aution: When installing the heatsink, make sure its two thermistor cables are routed as shown to pr event cable damage. Replacement Note: Make sure you install the thermal sponge over the two thermistor connectors.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 78 Checking the Thermal Gr ease W arning: Whenever the hea tsink is separated from the logic board (e ven if you ar e installing the same heatsink or board), the thermal grease must be checked and possibly replaced .

MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 8 1 Using the syringe, put a 0. 1 to 0. 1 2 cc dab of thermal grease, in the center , on the mating sur faces of both chips , as shown below . Apply the grease only up to the line that you marked on the syringe.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 82 While centering the heatsink pads o ver the two chips, lower the hea tsink onto the logic board and press on the areas wher e the screw brackets on the heatsink meet the standos on the board. Mak e sure the heatsink is lev el on the board before installing the screws.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 83 Replacement Note: If you replaced the heatsink from a kit that includes the thermal sponge , install the thermal sponge over the tw o thermistor connec tors .
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Heatsink 84 Comparing Heatsinks The heatsink ref erred to as a 1 .2 mm heatsink can be identied by the number 607-0 1 42 on its label and its thin rectangular thermistor connectors. Order Apple part number 076-1 242 (which includes the heatsink, thermal tape, and sponge) t o replace a 1 .
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Bluetooth Holder 85 Bluetooth Holder Important: The Bluetooth holder is included with a replacement optical drive and should not be removed unle ss it is damaged or no longer sticks to the optical drive housing.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Bluetooth Holder 86 Pr ocedure Insert a CD or D VD disc half way in to the slot drive to help support the dr ive and pr event damage.

MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 9 1 Tilt up the Bluetooth board from the upper right corner of the optical drive. Disconnect the optical drive ex cable from the logic board .
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 92 P eel up the tape from the optical drive. Carefully lift up or move aside the cable s to remove the single 5 .5-mm long screw at the mounting bracket. Y ou might rst need to disconnect the ground screw by the speaker to loosen the cables and access the mounting br ack et screw .
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 93 Use a black stick to slide the mounting br ack et forward (awa y from the body of the drive and toward the fan) t o disengage it.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 94 Access the tw o identical 3-mm long screws along the bottom edge of the drive at the hard drive snubber . (If the snubber is blocking one of the screws, carefully peel up the snubber .) Lift up the cable that runs between the drive and the snubber at the lower edge of the optical drive.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 95 W arning: Handle the optical drive at the side edge s only . Do not touch or pr ess anywhere else on the drive . Refer to the next section, “Handling Slot-Load Optical Drives .” Grasp the optical drive ex cable and use it as a pull tab as y ou tilt up the optical drive.
MacBook (1 3-inch) T ake Apar t — Optical Drive 96 Replacement Note: If y ou are installing a replacement drive , check tha t the sliding bracket that is secured with two screws slide s easily and is not too tight. If it is too tight, loosen the screws just enough so the bracket slides with ease.
