3 1 Quick Star t Congratulations on purchasing your iP od. Read this section to get star ted using iP od quickly . iP od works with the iT unes music software included on the iP od CD.

Quick Start 5 What Y ou Need to G et Star ted T o use iPod with a Macintosh, you must have: • A Macintosh with built-in Fir eWire or built-in high-power USB 2.0 • Mac OS X v1 0. 1 .5 or later Mac OS X v1 0.3.4 or lat er is recommended (and required to use iP od with USB 2.

8 Quick Start Setting Up iPod to Pla y Music T o set up i P od, you charge the batter y , install software from the iP od CD , and import songs from your music CD collection to your computer . Then you transfer the songs to iP od and star t listening to music.
Quick Start 9 Step 2: Install the Software Insert the iPod CD into your comput er and install iT unes and the iP od software. Step 3: Import Music to Y our Computer Complete this step if y ou haven ’t already transf erred music to your computer .
10 Quick Start Step 4: Connect iP od and T ransf er Music Connect iP od to your computer using one of the two included cables . Be sure the connectors on both ends of the cable are oriented correctly .
Quick Start 11 When you connect iPod t o your computer , iT unes opens a utomatically and transfers the songs and playlists in your music library to iPod . Note: If you’ re connecting using USB 2.0, be sure to connect iP od to a high-pow er USB 2.0 port directly on your computer , or to a powered USB 2.
12 Quick Start Step 5: Play Music When the song transfer is complete , a message on the iP od screen says “OK to disconnect.” Squeeze both sides of the Dock connector to disconnect the cable from iP od . Then use the Click Wheel and Select button to browse for a song .

Using iPod 15 iP od Controls Reset iP od (For use during tr oubleshooting) T oggle the Hold switch (set it to Hold , then turn it off again). Then press the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously for about 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. T urn on iP od Press an y button.
16 Using iPod Skip to any point in a song From the No w Playing screen, press the Select button to show the scrubber bar . Then scroll to any point in the song . Skip to the next song Press Next/F ast-forward. Start a song over Press P revious/Rewind.
Using iPod 17 Disabling iP od Buttons Using the Hold S witch If you’ re carr ying iPod in your pocket and you don ’t want to press the buttons or turn it on accidentally , you can make the buttons inactive. n Set the Hold switch to Hold. Slide the switch toward the center (so you can see the orange bar) to disable the controls.
18 Using iPod Making Playlists on iP od Y ou can set i P od to play the songs you wan t in the order you want. When you create a list of songs on your iP od, the songs appear in an On-The-Go playlist. T o create an On-The-Go playlist: 1 Highlight a song and press and hold the Select button until the song title flashes.
Using iPod 19 T o save On-The-Go playlists on your iP od: n Select Music > Playlists > On-The-Go > Save Playlist > Sa ve Playlist. The first playlist is sav ed as “New Playlist 1” in the Playlists menu. The On-The-Go playlist is cleared .
20 Using iPod Connecting and Disconnec ting iPod Y ou connec t iP od to your computer to transfer and manage music , and, in most cases, to charge the battery . • If you have a Mac or if you hav e a Windo ws PC with a 6-pin FireWire port , you can connect iPod using the included iP od Dock Connector to F ireWire cable.
Using iPod 21 Disconnecting iP od Y ou shouldn’t disconnect iP od while music is being transferred . Y ou can easily see if it ’ s OK to disconnect iPod b y looking at the screen. If you set iP od to transfer songs manually (see page 29) or enable iP od for use as a hard disk (see page 36), you must eject iP od before disconnecting it.
22 Using iPod T o ejec t iP od: n Select iPod in the iT unes Source list and click the Eject button. If you’ re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod b y dragging the iPod icon on the de sktop to the T rash.
Using iPod 23 Connecting iP od Using the iP od Dock (Included With Some Models) The iP od Dock holds iPod upright as it char ges or transfers music. C onnect the Dock to your computer using the same cable you use with iP od , or connect it to a power outlet using the FireWir e cable and power adapter .
24 Using iPod Using the iP od Dock, y ou can play music from iP od over external powered s peakers or a home stereo . Y ou need an audio cable with a standard 3.5 millimeter ster eo miniplug (many external speakers have this type of cable attached). T o play music from iP od using the Dock: 1 Place iP od in the Dock.
Using iPod 25 Organizing and T ransferring Y our Music For instructions for getting started playing music on iP od , see “Setting Up iPod to Pla y Music” on page 8.
26 Using iPod About the iT unes Music Store Using iT unes, you can preview , pur chase, and download your fa vorite songs from the iT unes Music Store (a vailable in some countries only). There are hundr eds of thousands of songs available for purchase.
Using iPod 27 If you are using iT unes 4.5 or later on a Windows PC, you can con vert nonprotected WMA files to AAC or MP3 f ormat. This can be useful if you hav e a library of music encoded in WMA format. F or more information, open iT unes and choose Help > iT unes and Music Store Help .
28 Using iPod Creating Pla ylists on Y our Computer T o create a playlist: n In iT unes, click the Add (+) button and t ype a name for the playlist, then drag songs from the library or another playlist to the new playlist. T o create a Smart Playlist: n In iT unes, choose File > New Smart Playlist and choose the criteria for your playlist.
Using iPod 29 3 Select “Only update checked songs.” T o set iPod to update only selected pla ylists: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list and click the Options button.
30 Using iPod Deleting Songs and Playlists F rom iP od Manually If you have set iP od to transf er songs manually (see above), you can delete songs and playlists from iP od individually . Songs deleted fr om iPod manually are not delet ed from the iT unes library .
Using iPod 31 Listening to Spoken W ord Audio Y ou can purchase and download s poken word audiobooks fr om the iT unes Music Store (available in some coun tries only) or from audible.com and listen t o them on your iP od. Y ou can use iTunes to transf er audiobooks to your iP od the same way y ou transfer songs.
32 Using iPod Adjusting iP od Settings Y ou can change settings direc tly on iP od in the Settings menu. Setting iP od to Shuffle Songs Y ou can set i P od to play songs or albums in random order . T o shuffle and begin playing all your songs: n Select Shuffle Songs from the iPod main menu.
Using iPod 33 T o set iPod to repeat songs: n Select Settings from the iPod main menu. • T o repeat all songs in the list , set Repeat to All. • T o repeat one song o ver and over , set Repeat to One.
34 Using iPod T o set iPod to use the iT unes volume settings: n Select Settings > Sound Check. If you have not activated Sound Check in iT unes, setting it on iP od has no effect. Using the iP od Equaliz er Y ou can use equalizer presets to change iP od sound to suit a particular music genre or style.
Using iPod 35 Adding or Removing Items F rom the Main Menu Y ou can add of ten-used items to the iP od main menu. For example, you can add a “Songs” item to the main menu, so you don ’t have to select Music before you select Songs. T o add or remove items from the main menu: n Select Settings > Main M enu.
36 Using iPod Using the Extra Features of Y our i P od Using iP od as an External Hard Disk Y ou can use i P od as a hard disk, to store and transf er data files. T o enable iPod as a hard disk: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list and click the Options button.
Using iPod 37 T o prevent iT unes from opening automatically when you connect iP od to your computer: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list. 2 Click the Options button and deselect “Open iTunes when attached .” Setting the Sleep Timer Y ou can set i P od to turn off automatically after a s pecific period of time.
38 Using iPod Importing Addresses , Phone Numbers, Calendar Events , and T o-Do Lists Y our iP od can store contacts, calendar events , and to-do lists, for viewing on the go. If you are using a Mac and iSync, it ’ s as easy as clicking a button. Synchronizing information using iSync r equires Mac OS X v1 0.
Using iPod 39 T o impor t contact information manually: 1 Connect iP od and open your favorit e email or contacts application. Importing contacts works with P alm Desktop , Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Entourage, and Eudora, among others. 2 Drag contacts from the application ’ s address book to the iPod C ontacts folder .
40 Using iPod T o view notes: n Select Extras > Notes. Recording Voic e Memos Y ou can record voice memos using an optional iPod-compatible micr ophone (available for purchase at www .apple.com/st ore). Y ou can store voice memos on your iP od and transfer them to your comput er .
Using iPod 41 Storing Digital Photos Using an optional iP od-compatible photo card reader (av ailable for purchase at www .apple.com/store) and a standard digital camera and phot o card, you can store photos on iP od, then delete them fr om the photo card and take more pictures.
42 Using iPod T o erase photos from a photo card: 1 Import photos from the card (see above). 2 Select Erase Card. All photos are deleted from the photo car d. T o transfer photos to your computer: n Connect iP od to your computer and open the application you use to transf er photos from your digital camera.
Using iPod 43 Charging the iP od Batter y iP od has an internal, nonremov able battery. I f iP od isn’ t used for a while, the batter y may need to be charged . The iP od battery is 80-percent charged in about two hours, and fully charged in about four hours.
44 Using iPod If you don ’t see the lightning bolt, you must charge the batt ery using the i P od P ower Adapter . T o charge the battery using the iPod P ower A dapter: 1 Connect the AC plug adapter to the power adapter (this may already be assembled).
Using iPod 45 Battery States When iP od is not connected to a power source , a batt ery icon in the top-right corner of the iP od screen shows about how much charge is left. If iPod is connected to a pow er source, the batter y icon animates to show that the battery is charging.
46 Using iPod iP od Accessories iP od comes with some accessories, and many other accessories are available at www .apple.com/store . iP od Remote (A vailable Separately) T o use the iPod Remote , connect it to the iPod Remote port, then connect the Apple Earphones (or another set of headphones) to the remote .
Using iPod 47 Use the remote ’ s Hold switch to disable the remote ’ s butt ons. The iP od Hold swit ch and the iP od Remote Hold switch do not affect one another .

49 1 Tips and T roubleshooting Most problems with iP od can be solved quickly by follo wing the advice in this chapter . Resetting iP od Most problems with iP od can be solved by resetting it. T o reset iPod: 1 Connect iPod to a power outlet using the iPod P ower Adapt er .
50 Tips and Troubleshooting If Y ou W ant to Disconnect iP od , but the Screen Say s “Do Not Disconnect” • If iPod is transf erring music, wait for the transf er to complete. • Select iPod in the iT unes Source list and click the Eject button.
Tips and Troubleshooting 51 If Y ou Connect iP od to Y our Computer and Nothing Happens • Make sure you have installed the software from the iP od CD . • Make sure you have the required computer and software. See “ What Y ou Need to Get Started” on page 5.
52 Tips and Troubleshooting If Y ou Connect iP od to a USB P ort and It Doesn’ t W ork Corr ectly • Y ou must use a FireWire port or a USB 2.0 por t to connect iPod . USB 1 . 1 is not supported and is significantly slower than Fir eWire and USB 2.
Tips and Troubleshooting 53 4 Select the second menu item (Reset) and select a language. Other iPod settings, such as song repeat, ar e also reset. Note: If you hav e added or remov ed items from the iP od main menu (see page 35), the Settings menu may be in a different place .
54 Tips and Troubleshooting Y ou can choose either to update or to restore the iP od software. • If you choose to update, the software is updated , but your settings and songs are not affected. • If you choose to restore, all data is erased from your iPod , including songs, files , contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data.
