Contact the Customer Support Center or the product manufacturer for instructions on how to inspect the product and have it repaired, if necessary .

Chapter 1. Arranging your workspace To get the most from your computer , arrange both the equipment you use and your work area to suit your needs and the kind of work you do. Y our comfort is of foremost importance, but light sour ces, air circulation, and the location of electrical outlets also can affect the way you arrange your workspace.

Completing important tasks After you have set up your computer , perform the following tasks, which will save you time and trouble later: v Cr eate a diagnostics diskette. The diagnostics tool can isolate hardwar e problems and is part of the Pr oduct Recovery program.
For more details about updating your antivirus softwar e, refer to the Access IBM program. Starting the Setup Utility The Setup Utility enables you to view , set, or change BIOS configuration settings and passwords. 1. Shut down the operating system and turn of f your computer .

Chapter 3. Recovering software The Rescue and Recovery ™ program pr ovides an environment that runs independently of the W indows operating system and is hidden from the W indows operating system.
Note: Y our Micr osoft W indows license permits you to create only one set of Product Recovery discs, so it is important that you stor e the discs in a safe place after you make them.

Creating and using rescue media Rescue media enables you to start the Rescue and Recovery program fr om CD or DVD. Rescue media is extremely important if you ar e unable to access the Rescue and Recovery program using the Enter or F1 1 key . To create rescue media, do the following: 1.

Chapter 5. T roubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic tools. If your computer problem is not described her e, use Access IBM for more detailed troubleshooting information or see “Additional help” on page xv.
Symptom Action The keyboard does not work. The computer does not respond to the keyboard. V erify that: v The computer and monitor are turned on and the brightness and contrast controls ar e set correctly . v The keyboard is secur ely connected to the keyboard connector on the computer .
Power supply and system board Diagnostic LEDs Yo u computer has two LEDs located on power supply on the back of the chassis. The power button LED located on front of your computer and the two LEDs on the back will help you determine if the power supply or system board is working corr ectly .
Running Diagnostics from the Rescue and Recovery workspace Use the following steps to run diagnostics from the Rescue and Recovery workspace: 1. Shut down your operating system, and turn of f the computer .

Error codes The following table includes some of the more common err or codes that might be displayed when your computer is performing the power-on self-test (POST). v Recor d error codes that ar e displayed. If you call for service, you will be asked for the error codes.
