Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and refer ence information for ThinkStation™ computers list ed on the cover . It is int ended only for tr ained servicers who are familiar with L enovo® computer pr oducts. Before servicing a L enovo pr oduct, be sure to read the Safety Information.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with befor e servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensure gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the ar ea of the machines during and after maintenance.
Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical currents. Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers t o decr ease electrostatic dischar ges.
V oltage-selection switch Some computers are equipped with a voltage-selection switch located near the power -cord connection point on the comput er . If your comput er has a voltage-selection switch, ensur e that you set the switch to match the voltage available at your electrical outlet.
5. Check for any obvious alter ations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alter ations. 6. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal lings, contamination, water or other liquids, or signs of re or smoke damage.

Chapter 4. Gener al Check out Attention The drives in the computer you are servicing might have been rearr anged or the drive startup sequence changed. Be e xtremely car eful during write oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or progr ams can be overwritten if you select an incorr ect drive.

Chapter 5. Diagnostics Diagnostic pr ograms are used to test hardwar e components of your comput er . Diagnostic pr ograms can also r eport operating-syst em-controlled settings that interfer e with the corr ect oper ation of your syst em.
PC-Doctor for Windows PE The PC-Doctor for Windows PE diagnostic progr am is part of the Rescue and Recovery workspace on each Lenovo computer . Use PC-Doctor for Windows PE if you ar e unable t o start the Windows operating syst em or if L enovo ThinkV antage T oolbox has not been successful in isolating a possible pr oblem.
2. Insert the disc into the optical drive. 3. Restart the computer . Note: If the diagnostic pr ogram does not start, you might not have your optical drive set as a startable device. See “Selecting a startup device” on page 43 for instructions on how t o change the startup device.
T est r esults (N/A, P ASSED , F AILED , ABORTED) are displayed in the eld beside the t est description and in the test log. See “Viewing the test log” on page 39. T o select one or more t ests, use the following procedur e. 1. Open the corr esponding test category .
• P erforms all the steps in Quick Er ase. • P rovides a DOS utility that writ es r andom data t o all sect ors of the hard drive. • P rovides an estimate of time to completion along with a visual repr esentation of completion status. • P rovides messages that warn the user about non-recover able process.

Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogram is used to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating syst em you ar e using. However , the oper ating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Not be your name or your user name • Not be a common word or a common name • Be signicantly differ ent from your pr evious password User P assword When a User Passwor d is set, the comput er cannot be used until a valid password is typed fr om the keyboard.
Note: If you do not want to save the settings, select Exit the Setup Utility without saving . T o set the L egacy diskette A, do the following: 1. S tart the Setup Utility progr am (see “Starting the Setup Utility progr am ” on page 41). 2. F rom the Setup Utility pr ogram menu, select Devices ® Legacy diskette A .
Exiting from the Setup Utility progr am After you nish viewing or changing settings, pr ess Esc t o return to the Setup Utility pr ogram menu (you might have t o pr ess Esc sever al times). If you want t o save the new settings, select Save Settings or Save and e xit the Setup Utility .
Chapter 7. Installing hard disk drives and conguring RAID (types 4105, 4157, 4217) This chapter contains information about installing hard disk drives and conguring Redundant Arr ay of Independent Disks (RAID) for this pr oduct. Note: The information about conguring RAID in this chapter is applicable only for a Windows environment.
Creating RAID volumes This section describes how t o use the Intel Matrix Stor age Manager option ROM congur ation utility to creat e RAID volumes. 1. P ress Ctrl+I when pr ompted to ent er the Int el Matrix Stor age Manager option ROM conguration utility .

Conguring the Marvell BIOS Setup to set an optional hot spare hard disk drive T o congur e the Marvell BIOS Setup to set an optional hot spare hard disk drive: 1. T urn on your computer and press Ctrl+M when prompted t o enter the Marvell BIOS Setup.
Chapter 8. Installing hard disk drives and conguring RAID (types: 4155, 4158, 4218) This chapter contains information about installing hard disk drives and conguring Redundant Arr ay of Independent Disks (RAID) for this pr oduct. Note: The information about conguring RAID in this chapter only applies for a Windows environment.
Conguring the Marvell BIOS Setup to enable SA T A or SAS RAID 0, 1, 5, or 10 functionality T o enable SA T A/SAS RAID functionality, use the Marvell BIOS Setup conguration utility as the SA T A/SAS conguration utility . This utility assumes that the system has the r equired number of hard disk drives.
2. On the Marvell BIOS Setup screen, use the arr ow keys t o select RAID Cong and press Enter . The RAID Cong menu opens. 3. F rom the RAID Cong menu, select Delete arr ay . 4. Use the arr ow keys and the Ent er key to select the arr ay you want to delet e fr om the list.

POS T error codes Each time you power -on the system, it performs a series of t ests that check the oper ation of the syst em and some options. This series of t ests is called the P ower-On Self- T est , or POS T . POS T does the following operations.

Chapter 10. Replacing FRUs (T ype 4105, 4157, 4217) Important Before you r eplace any FRU , read Chapt er 2 “Safety information” on page 3. These precautions and guidelines will help you work safely . FRU r eplacements are t o be done by trained service technicians only .

5. Disengage the cover latch 1 and remove the cover . Place the cover on a at surface. Locations The following illustration will help you locat e the major FRUs in the computer .

Removing the fr ont bez el T o remove the front bezel: 1. Remove the cover . See “Removing the cover” on page 78. 2. Remove the front bezel by releasing the three plastic tabs 1 on the left side and pivoting the bezel outward. 3. Lay the front bez el on a at surface.
Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels ar e present inside any component that has this label attached. There ar e no servicable parts inside these components.
7. Ensur e that the new power supply is the correct replacement. Some power supplies automatically sense the voltage, some power supplies ar e voltage specic, and some power supplies have a voltage-selection switch. If there is a voltage-selection switch, use a ballpoint pen t o slide the switch, if necessary .
CA UTION: The memory module might be very hot. T urn off the computer and wait three t o ve minutes to let the computer cool befor e opening the computer cover .
5. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108. Replacing a PCI adapter card Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkStation Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer .
6. Release the adapter card support retaining latch 1 if necessary . Gr asp the failing adapt er card and pull the adapter card out of the slot. Note: The adapt er card ts tightly into the card slot. If necessary, alt ernate moving each side of the adapter card a small amount until it is r emoved fr om the adapt er card slot.
7. Remove the new adapt er card from its static-prot ective package. 8. Install the new adapter car d int o the appropriat e adapt er car d slot on the system board.

9. Connect any adapter car d cables to the system boar d. 10. Latch the adapter card retainer . 11. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108.
3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly cable fr om the syst em board. Note the cable location. See “Locating parts on the system boar d ” on page 81. 4. F ollow this sequence to r emove the heat sink fr om the system board: a. Partially remove scr ew 1 , then fully r emove screw 2 , and fully r emove scr ew 1 .
10. Reconnect the heat sink fan cable. See “L ocating parts on the syst em boar d ” on page 81. 11. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108. Replacing the microprocessor CA UTION: The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot.
Notes: a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the micr oprocessor . This is important when r einstalling the micropr ocessor on the new system board. b. Do not drop anything onto the micropr ocessor socket while it is exposed. The socket pins must be kept as clean as possible.
9. Place the heat sink into position and r eplace the 4 scr ews t o secur e the heat sink to the syst em boar d. 10. Reconnect the heat sink fan cable. 11. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108. Replacing the syst em boar d CA UTION: The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot.
9. C arefully lift the system boar d out of the chassis. 10. Remove the micr oprocessor sock et cover fr om the new syst em board. 11. Remove the micropr ocessor from the failing system board and install it on the new syst em board. See “Replacing the micropr ocessor ” on page 92.
Note: Y our micr oprocessor socket and cover might look slightly differ ent fr om the illustr ation. d. C arefully pr ess the socket cover str aight downwar ds until it is secur ed int o the socket. e. Lower the micropr ocessor retainer and then lower the lever to secure the r etainer .

5. Remove the failing hard disk drive from the br acket by exing the br acket. 6. T o install the new har d disk drive into the bracket, e x the br acket, and then align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the brack et with the holes in the har d disk drive.

6. Remove the r etainer br acket fr om the drive being r eplaced and install it on the new drive. 7. Slide the new optical drive int o the bay fr om the front until it snaps int o position. 8. Reconnect the signal and power cables t o the new drive. 9.
5. P ress the drive latch 1 and slide the drive out the fr ont of the computer . 6. Slide the new diskette drive or car d r eader int o the drive bay until it snaps int o position.

8. Depending on which fan assembly you ar e r eplacing, reconnect the fan assembly cable t o the adapter card fan assembly connect or or the r ear fan assembly connect or on the syst em boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system board ” on page 81.
6. Install the new fr ont panel connectors assembly into the chassis and secure it with the screw . 7. Reconnect the cables to the system boar d. 8. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108.

Removing the fr ont bez el T o remove the front bezel: 1. Remove the cover . See “Removing the cover” on page 78. 2. Remove the front bezel by releasing the three plastic tabs 1 on the left side and pivoting the bezel outward. 3. Lay the front bez el on a at surface.

Note: Use only the screws pr ovided by Lenovo. 9. Install and tighten the four screws at the r ear of the chassis t o secur e the power supply . 10. Install and tighten the two screws that secur e the power supply to the inside of the chassis. 11. Reconnect all power supply cables t o the drives, adapter car ds, and the system board.
5. Open the retaining clips as shown. If you are replacing an old memory module, open the r etaining clips and remove the memory module being replaced as shown. 6. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the slot key 2 on the system board.
7. T o install the memory fan, engage the r ear of the duct with the retainer on the system board and then pivot the duct downwar ds until the duct snaps into position. Reconnect the memory fan cable to the syst em board. 8. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108.
3. T ake not e of the location of all cable connections on the adapter card. It will be necessary to r econnect them properly when installing a new card. 4. Disconnect all cables connected t o the adapt er card. See “L ocating parts on the system board ” on page 113.

7. Reverse this pr ocedure to install the card. 8. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108. Replacing the heat sink CA UTION: The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. T urn off the computer and wait three to ve minutes to let the computer cool befor e opening the computer cover .
Notes: a. Do not remove the plastic cover until you ar e r eady to install the heat sink and fan assembly on the micropr ocessor . Do not t ouch the gr ease on the heat sink and fan assembly . Do not put the heat sink and fan assembly anywher e ex cept on the micr oprocessor aft er the plastic cover has been removed and the grease exposed.
Important T ouch only the sides of the micr oprocessor . Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom. 5. Lift the micropr ocessor straight up and out of the socket. Notes: a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the micr oprocessor . This is important when r einstalling the micropr ocessor on the new system board.
8. Close the micr oprocessor r etainer and clamp it with the small handle. 9. Place the heat sink into position and r eplace the 4 scr ews t o secur e the heat sink to the syst em boar d. 10. Reconnect the heat sink fan cable. 11. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108.
9. C arefully lift the system boar d out of the chassis. 10. Remove the micr oprocessor sock et cover fr om the new syst em board. 11. Remove the micropr ocessor from the failing system board and install it on the new syst em board. See “Replacing the micropr ocessor ” on page 92.

6. T o install the new har d disk drive into the bracket, e x the br acket, and then align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the brack et with the holes in the har d disk drive. Do not t ouch the cir cuit board 5 on the bottom of the har d disk drive.

7. Install the new har d disk drive fan assembly by aligning the rubber mounts of the fan assembly with the holes in the hard disk drive fan assembly br acket and pushing the rubber mounts thr ough the holes.
6. Remove the r etainer br acket fr om the drive being r eplaced and install it on the new drive. 7. Slide the new optical drive int o the bay fr om the front until it snaps int o position. 8. Reconnect the signal and power cables t o the new drive. 9.
7. Install the r etainer brack et on the new diskette drive or car d reader . 8. Disconnect the signal cable fr om the failing diskett e drive or car d reader and connect it t o the new drive. 9. Slide the new diskette drive or car d r eader int o the drive bay until it snaps int o position.
3. Disconnect the fan assembly cable fr om the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board ” on page 113. 4. The fan assembly is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts. Car efully remove the four rubber mounts by breaking them or cutting them with scissors and then remove the fan assembly out of the chassis.
6. Remove the two screws that secure the front panel connectors assembly t o the chassis and then r elease the front panel connect ors assembly from the chassis. 7. Align the scr ew holes in the new front panel connectors assembly with the holes in the chassis.
6. Rout e the cable for the new power switch/LED assembly thr ough the hole in the chassis and t o the system board. 7. Install the new power switch/LED assembly int o the bezel. Make sur e that the LEDs ar e in the corr ect position. 8. Connect the power switch/LED cable t o the system boar d.
Note: When the comput er is turned on for the rst time aft er replacing the batt ery, an err or message might be displayed. This is normal after r eplacing the battery . 8. T urn on the computer and all attached devices. 9. Use the Setup Utility progr am to set the dat e and time and any passwords.
7. Connect the int ernal speaker cable and the power LED cable t o the syst em boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system board ” on page 113. 8. Reinstall the hard disk drive fan br acket if removed. 9. Reinstall the front bezel. 10. Go to “Completing the FRU r eplacement” on page 108.
