Chapter 2. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your computer . This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Handli.
Installing ext ernal options Y ou can connect e xternal options t o your computer , such as ext ernal speakers, a print er , or a scanner . F or some ext ernal options, you must install additional software in addition to making the physical connection.
Removing and reinstalling the front bez el Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer .
4. T o reinstall the fr ont bezel, align the other three plastic tabs on the bottom of the fr ont bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the front bez el inward until it snaps into position. 6. Pivot the optical drive bay upward to access the system board components and the cables. See “Replacing the optical drive” on page 30. Installing or replacing a memory module Attention: Do not .
• If you are installing a memory module, open the retaining clips of the memory slot into which you want to install the memory module. Figure 10. Opening the retaining clips 10. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the syst em boar d.
T o install or r eplace a PCI car d, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets. 2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 14. 3. Rotate the PCI car d r etainer to the open position.
b. If the car d is held in place by a r etaining latch, press the card retaining latch 1 as shown t o disengage the latch. Gr asp the card and gently pull it out of the slot.
Installing or r eplacing the card reader Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . 6. Install the car d r eader br acket to the chassis. Then push the br acket to the left to align the scr ew hole in the br acket with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.
7. Install the screw to secur e the card reader br acket to the chassis. Figure 15. Installing the screw that secures the card reader 8. Pivot the optical drive bay upwar d and connect the card r eader cable t o one of the USB connectors on the system boar d.
Replacing the card r eader T o r eplace the car d r eader , do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er .
9. Install the car d r eader br acket to the chassis. Then push the br acket to the left to align the scr ew hole in the br acket with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.
10. Install the screw to secur e the card reader br acket to the chassis. Figure 19. Installing the screw that secures the card reader 11. Pivot the optical drive bay upwar d and r econnect the car d reader cable to one of the USB connectors on the system boar d.
Refer to the “Lithium battery notice” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide for information about replacing and disposing of the batt ery . T o r eplace the batt ery, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
T o r eplace the hard disk drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets. 2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 14. 3. Locat e the har d disk drive. See “Locating components” on page 10.
6. Flex the retaining clips as shown t o remove the hard disk drive fr om the bracket. Figure 23. Removing the hard disk drive from the bracket 7. T o install a new hard disk drive into the br acket, e x the br acket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 4 , and pin 5 on the brack et with the corr esponding holes in the har d disk drive.
9. Insert the two r etaining clips 1 of the hard disk drive br acket into the corresponding holes in the side of the optical drive bay, and then pivot the hard disk drive and br acket downwards until the hard disk drive bracket snaps int o position. Figure 24.

7. Pr ess the optical drive lock 1 and slide the optical drive out of the r ear of the drive bay assembly . Figure 26. Removing the old optical drive 8.
9. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay until it snaps int o position. Figure 28. Installing a new optical drive 10. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the rear of the optical drive. What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go to the appr opriate section.
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er . 2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 14.
6. Remove the two scr ews that secure the heat sink fan duct. Then remove the heat sink fan duct fr om the failing heat sink and fan assembly . Figure 30. Removing the heat sink fan duct 7. Place the new heat sink and fan assembly on the system board so that the four screws ar e aligned with the corresponding holes in the system board.
10. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two screws to secur e the heat sink fan duct.
Hazardous moving parts. K eep ngers and other body parts away . CA UTION: Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached.
5. Remove the two scr ews that secure the heat sink fan duct, and then lift the heat sink fan duct out of the chassis. Figure 32. Removing the heat sink fan duct 38 ThinkCentre User Guide.
6. Pivot the optical drive upwar d and disconnect the power supply assembly cables fr om all drives and from power connectors 1 and 2 on the system board. Figure 33. Power connectors on the system board Note: Y ou might also need t o release the power supply assembly cables from some cable clips or ties that secur e the cables to the chassis.
8. Make sur e that the new power supply assembly is the corr ect replacement. 9. Install the new power supply assembly int o the chassis so that the screw holes in the new power supply assembly are aligned with the corresponding holes in the r ear of the chassis.
11. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two screws to secur e the heat sink fan duct.
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er . 2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 14.
Notes: a. Y our micr oprocessor and sock et might look different from the one illustr ated. b. Note the orientation of the micropr ocessor in the socket. Y ou can look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micropr ocessor on the system board.
12. Reinstall the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct as shown. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 33. Figure 39. Reinstalling the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct 13. Reconnect all cables that were disconnect ed fr om the system board.
3. Remove the front bez el by r eleasing the three plastic tabs and pivoting the front bez el outward. Figure 40. Removing the front bez el 4. Locat e the int ernal speaker . See “L ocating components” on page 10. 5. Disconnect the internal speaker cable fr om the internal speaker connect or on the system boar d.

7. Push the internal speak er outwar d through the hole 1 t o disengage it from the two metal tabs on the chassis. Then, slide the internal speaker to the right t o remove it from the chassis.

P osition the cover pr esence switch so that the scr ew hole in the cover pr esence switch is aligned with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.

T o reinstall the fr ont bezel, align the three tabs on the fr ont bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis and pivot the front bez el inwar ds until it snaps into position.

4. Connect a new mouse to the appropriat e connector on the computer . Y our mouse might be connected to a PS/2 mouse connect or 1 or a USB connect or 2 .
Obtaining device drivers Y ou can obtain device drivers for oper ating systems that ar e not pr einstalled at http://www.lenovo.com/support. Installation instructions ar e provided in r eadme les with the device-driver les.
Erasing a lost or for gotten passwor d (clearing CMOS) This section pr ovides instructions on how to er ase a lost or for gotten passwor d, such as a user passwor d. T o er ase a lost or forgotten passwor d, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer .
Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Creating and using recovery me.
T o cr eate recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen. Using recovery media This section provides instructions on how to use recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system.
1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery progr am opens. 2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arr ow.
2. Repeatedly pr ess and r elease the F11 key when turning on the computer . When you hear beeps or see a logo scr een, r elease the F11 key . 3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery password, type your passwor d when prompt ed. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens aft er a short delay .
2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key when turning on the comput er . When the Startup Device Menu opens, r elease the F12 key . 3. On the Startup Device Menu , select the desired optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the rescue disc into the optical drive and pr ess Enter .
• Use recovery media if all other methods of r ecovery have failed and you need t o r estor e the har d disk drive to the fact ory default settings. See “Cr eating and using recovery media” on page 55.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A password can be any combination of up t o 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwords ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Contr oller When this option is set t o Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connectors (such as the har d disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the syst em congur ation. USB Setup Use this option to set up USB connect ors.
2. Select Startup ➙ Primary Boot Sequence . Read the information displayed on the right side of the screen. 3. Select the rst boot device, second boot device, and so on. 4. Pr ess Esc t o return t o the Startup menu. Then, select the devices for the Automatic Boot Sequence and Error Boot Sequence .
Chapter 5. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POS T and BIOS update failure.
5. When prompt ed to change the machine type and model, it is suggest ed that you do not make this change by pr essing N. However , if you do want to change the machine type and model, pr ess Y , then type in the machine type and model and pr ess Ent er .
12. Reinstall any parts and r econnect any cables that have been r emoved or disconnect ed. 13. Close the comput er cover and r econnect power cor ds and all other e xternal cables. See “Completing the parts r eplacement” on page 52. 14. T urn on the computer and remove the disc from the optical drive.

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostic programs This chapt er pr ovides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer problem is not described in this chapt er , see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 75 for additional tr oubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The mouse does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The mouse is correctly connected to an appr opriate mouse connector (the PS/2 mouse connector or one of the USB connectors) on the computer . • The mouse is clean.
Note: If you ar e unable to isolate and r epair the pr oblem yourself after running the progr am, save and print the log les creat ed by the progr am.
Cleaning the mouse This section pr ovides instructions on how to clean an optical or non-optical mouse. Optical mouse An optical mouse uses a light-emitting diode and an optical sensor to navigat e the point er . If the point er on the scr een does not move smoothly with the optical mouse, you might need t o clean the mouse.
The non-optical mouse uses a ball to navigate the pointer . If the point er on the scr een does not move smoothly with the mouse, you might need t o clean the mouse. T o clean the non-optical mouse, do the following: 1. T urn off your comput er . 2. Disconnect the mouse cable fr om the computer .
