B-3 Appendix B P aper Selection P aper Specifications The f ollo wing table summarizes the basic paper specifications. Details are given on the f ollowing pages . T able B.1. Paper Specifications W eight 60 to 90 g/m 2 (16 to 24 lbs./ream) Thic kness 0.
B-4 B.2. Selecting the Right P aper The f ollowing sections e xplain the basic things to look for when selecting paper . K eep these things in mind when selecting paper . Condition of the P aper A void using paper that is f olded at the cor ners, curled, dir ty , stained, has fuzzy fibers, rough surf ace or is easily torn.
B-5 Appendix B P aper Selection P aper Siz e Cassettes and the multi-purpose tray can handle the paper siz es listed in the f ollowing table. The printer automatically detects the paper size loaded in a cassette.
B-6 Smoothness Although it is impor tant to use paper with a smooth and ev en surface, do not use paper which has been coated. P aper that is too smooth, can cause multiple feeding and paper jams . Basis W eight Basis weight is the w eight of one square meter sheet of paper .
B-7 Appendix B P aper Selection Moisture Content Moisture content is defined as the percent ratio of moisture to the dry mass of the paper . Moisture can aff ect feedability , electrostatic proper ties, and toner fusing characteristics. The moisture content of the paper v aries with the relative humidity in the room.
B-8 Stiffness P aper that is too limp or too stiff may f old or bend inside the pr inter , resulting in a paper jam. Curl Most paper has a natural tendency to curl in one direction or the other if it is stored unwrapped. P aper will cur l slightly upward when it passes through the fuser unit.
B-9 Appendix B P aper Selection Specially treated paper W e recommend that you a v oid using paper listed below which has been specially treated, ev en if it meets basic specifications. If you wish to use such paper , test a sample on the printer and check that printing quality is satisfactory before purchasing.
B-10 B.3. Special P aper This section e xplains printing on special paper . The page printer can use the follo wing types of special paper . (1) Colored paper (2) Prepr inted paper (3) Overhead projec.
B-11 Appendix B P aper Selection Specifications f or each type of special paper are giv en below . Colored P aper Colored paper should meet the same specifications as listed f or white bond paper in page B-3. In addition, the pigments used in the paper must be ab le to withstand the temperature during printing.
B-12 Notes When using OHP film, set the Paper type setting on the Mode Select Menu to Extra thick and f eed the OHP film one at a time from the multi-purpose tra y . Do not use film made from anything other than poly ester . P ostcards Use postcards weighing 90 to 128 g/m 2 .
B-13 Appendix B P aper Selection Labels The basic rule for printing on adhesiv e labels is that the adhesive m ust ne v er come into contact with any part of the pr inter . Adhesive paper stic king to the drum or rollers will damage the pr inter . Label paper must be manually f ed.
B-14 T ab le B.4 lists the specifications f or adhesive label paper . T able B.4 Adhesive Label Specifications Item Specification W eight of top sheet 44 to 74 g/m 2 (12 to 20 lbs/ream) Composite weight 104 to 151 g/m 2 (28 to 40 lbs/ream) Thickness of top sheet 0.
