B.1. General Guidelines B-1 Appendix B Paper Selection B.1. General Guidelines The printe r is designed to print on high-quality c opier bond paper (th e kind used in ordi nary dry copier m achines), but it can accep t a vari ety of o ther ty pes of paper as we ll wit hin the l imits sp ec- ified be low.
B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-2 Paper Specifications The foll owing table summarizes th e basic paper specifi cations. Deta ils are g iven on the following page s. B.2. Selecting the Right Paper Laser printing is a process involving laser light, electrostatic discharge, toner, and heat.
B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-3 Smoothness The paper shoul d have a smooth, uncoated surfac e. Paper with a rough or sandy surfa ce can cause voids in the print ed output. Paper that is too smooth, however, c an cause mu ltiple feeding and fogging problems.
B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-4 The moi sture conten t of the pap er va ries with th e relat ive humi dity in the ro om. When t he relat ive humidi ty is high and t he pap er absorbs moi sture, th e paper edges exp and, beco ming wav y in appearance.
B.3. Special Paper B-5 Packaging: Paper should be packed in a sturdy cart on to protect it from damage during transpo rt. Qualit y paper obt ained from a reput able suppli er is usu ally prop erly pac kaged.
B.3. Special Paper B-6 Adhesiv e-Backed La bels The basic rule for p rinting on adhesiv e labels is that the adhesiv e must never co me into contact with any part o f the prin ter. Adhesiv e paper stick ing to th e drum or rol lers will damage the printe r.
B.3. Special Paper B-7 Envelopes The prin ter can pri nt on env elopes using pap er with a ba sis weight o f 60 to 79 g/m 2 (16 to 21 lbs/ ream). Enve lopes must be m anually fe d. An envel ope is a more co mplex objec t than a singl e sheet of pape r.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-1 Appendix C Host Computer Interface This appendix describes the signals used in the laser printer's parallel, RS-232 C/RS-422A interfaces. It also lists pin assignments , signal functions, timings, con nector specifications, and voltage levels.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-2 Interfac e Signals The pins of the parallel int erface conn ector carry the signals listed i n Table C.1 . Asterisks in the table indicate signals that are act ive low. The tabl e also indi cates whether each signal is inco ming or outgo ing with r espect to the printer.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-3 Detailed descriptions of the signals follow. Strobe* [nStrob e] (Pin 1) A negat ive-go ing St robe* pu lse ca uses t he prin ter to read an d latc h the data on t he Da ta 0 [1] to Data 7 [8] signal li nes.

C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface C-5 C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface RS-232C interface Interf ace Signals The pins of the printer's RS-232C interface connector carry the signals listed in Table C.2 . The table also indi cates wheth er each signal is incomi ng or ou tgoing with respect to the pr inter.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A In terface C-6 DTR - Da ta Terminal Ready - (Pi n 20) This outpu t is used as a buffer ne arly-full handshake li ne. It is held high (above 3 v olts) when the buffer can ac cept mo re data. RS-232C In terface V o ltage Levels The voltage levels of the interface signals conform to EIA RS-232C specifications.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface C-7 Withdr awing th e Mai n Circu it Boar d from the Printe r ☛ Be sure to rem ove the me mory card firs t if inserted i n the printer 's memory ca rd slot. Withd raw the ma in circ uit board c omplet ely fr om the p rinter as fo llows: 1.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A In terface C-8 Verifying the Setting The procedure described below should be followed to verify that the RS-422A mode had been cor- rectl y set. Print t he servi ce status p age to ver ify that th e RS-422A mode has been co rrectl y set.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface C-9 RDB - Receive Data - ( Pin 18) RDA - Receive Data Inverted - (Pin 3) These p ins carry asynch ronous d ata sent from t he comp uter to t he printe r.
