B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-2 B.2. Selecti ng the Right Paper Laser print ing is a proces s involv ing laser light , electr ostatic dis charge, toner, and heat. In addit ion, as the paper pass es through the p rinter it underg oes considerab le sli ding, bending, and twisting mo tions.
B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-3 Smoothness The paper should have a smoot h, uncoated surface. Paper with a roug h or sandy surface can caus e voids in the printed output. Paper that is too smooth, however, can cause multiple fee ding and fogging problems.
B.3. Special Paper B-4 out flat. Mo st paper also has a top and bo ttom surf ace. Loading instructions are usually given on the paper package. Electrostat ic properties: During the printi ng process the pa per is electro staticall y charged to attract the toner.
B.3. Special Paper B-5 Overhead Pr ojection (OHP) Film OHP film must be able to withst and the heat of fusi ng during the printing proc ess. It should satisfy the con- ditions in Ta ble B.3. To avoid trouble, O HP film must be delivered face-up. If OHP fil m jams f requently, pull the top o f the sheet v ery gently as it le aves the printer.
B.3. Special Paper B-6 Envelopes The print er can print o n envelopes us ing paper wit h a basis w eight of 6 0 to 79 g/m² (1 6 to 21 lbs /ream). Enve- lopes m ust be manua lly fed. An envelope is a more complex object than a s ingle sheet o f paper.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-1 Appendix C Host Computer Interface This appendix des cribes the signals used in th e laser printer's parallel, RS-232C/RS-422A interfaces. It also lists pin assignments, signa l functions, timings, con nector specifications , and voltage levels.

Pull the mai n circuit board all the way o ut of the pri nte r. ☛ Before pulling the main board out, clean an area on t he table, et c., at the back of t he printer's rear panel. Foreign object s, acciden- tally sticking to the back of the main board, can cause serious damage to t he printer.
