Introduction Staying Current 1-2 • a pitch wheel • a modulation wheel • ve assignable sliders (use the Shift button to select three different functions for each slider to control up to 15 parameters of your c hoosing).
Getting Started Before Y ou Start… 2-1 Chapter 2 Getting Started This chapter will help you hook up y our SP5 to your sound system and MIDI system. If hooking up new gear is familiar to you, then simply read the following tw o sections in this chapter .
Getting Started Start Up Details: The Rear Panel 2-2 Use Y our SP5 1. P ower up y our SP5 rst, and then raise the MASTER VOL UME slider. The SP5 starts up in Prog ram Mode by default. Press one of the function buttons to the left of the display to switc h Modes .
Getting Started Start Up Details:The Rear Panel 2-3 • Use the SP5 as a MIDI controller with a sequencer computer prog ram. • Use the computer to manage the user data contents of the SP5. • Update the software and sounds of the SP5. Be sure to chec k the Kurzweil Music Systems w ebsite at www .
Getting Started Connecting the Power Cable (Line Cord) 2-4 Connecting the Power Cable (Line Cord) The SP5 r uns on 15 volts DC pow er . If the power cord and 15V po wer adapter supplied with the SP5 d.
Getting Started Connecting Pedals 2-5 Connecting Pedals Plug your switc h or continuous control pedals into the cor responding jacks on the SP5’ s rear panel.
Getting Started Connecting Pedals 2-6 Connecting a Switch Pedal When a switch pedal is plug ged into the Pedal 1 jac k on the rear panel, a single switch pedal will, by default, act lik e a sustain pedal. T he same is tr ue for the P edal 2 jack; in this case the single switch pedal will, b y default, act like a sostenuto pedal.
Getting Started Connecting MIDI 2-7 Connecting MIDI In addition to being a perfor mance-suited musical instr ument, the SP5 is a po werful, but intuitiv e and easy-to-use MIDI controller .
Getting Started Connecting MIDI 2-8 Connecting to a Computer Sequencer T o connect your SP5 to a computer as a MIDI controller , simply connect the SP5 to your computer using the provided cable . If you wish to use your o wn cable, mak e sure that it is a T ype-A-to-T ype-B USB cable (the USB por t of the SP5 being T ype B).
Features of the SP5 The Front Panel 3-1 Chapter 3 Features of the SP5 This chapter will help you familiarize y ourself with the features of the SP5. Many of these features hav e both g eneral functions and Mode-specic functions . F or more in-depth descriptions of these features , refer to the chapters on the individual Modes .
Features of the SP5 Pitch and Mod Wheels 3-2 Pitch and Mod Wheels Pitch Wheel The pitch wheel is the left most of the two wheels . It is spring-loaded, such that its center position is restored when it is not being used. That is because the pitch wheel is used for pitch-bending notes—its “off ” position is in the center .
Features of the SP5 Real T ime Control 3-3 Sliders The ve sliders on the left of the front panel can be assigned to send MIDI continuous controller values . Each slider can independently control three se parate functions gi ving you access to 15 MIDI continuous controllers .

T utorials Creating a Setup from a Program 1 1-1 Chapter 1 1 T utorials This chapter contains tutorials on editing Objects . By g oing through them step-by-step , you will better understand the process of the editing Setups . Additionally , this chapter will point you in the right direction for descriptions on perfor ming certain technical tasks .
T utorials Creating a Setup from a Program 1 1-2 T o create this Split Setup follow these steps . Be careful not to exit any of the Split parameter pages before the Split Setup is complete. If you do , exit Prog ram Mode and enter it ag ain and then start from ste p 1: 1.
T utorials Creating a Setup from a Program 1 1-3 3. Let’ s now c hang e the Split V olume. R ecall that the Split V olume deter mines the r elative volumes of the two V oices: positiv e values increase the v olume of the Secondar y V oice and decrease the volume of the Primar y V oice .
T utorials Creating a Setup from a Program 1 1-4 can also directly enter the new parameter v alue, using the Keypad categ or y button and the alphanumeric data entry buttons, see the Note on page 11-2.) F or our example, since w e want our synth to be one octav e lower than nor mal, let’ s set this parameter to -12 .
T utorials Creating a Setup from a Program 1 1-5 2. Press the Layer Function button. This creates a Setup with tw o activ e Zones with the same keyboard regions—i.e ., ov erlapping keyboard regions . In this case, Program 125 Real Vibes as the Primar y V oice.
T utorials Creating a Layer Setup with V elocity-dependent Zones 1 1-6 6. Let’ s now c hang e the Layer T ransposition. Recall that the La yer T ransposition deter mines the transposition of the Secondar y V oice relative to that of the Primar y V oice.
T utorials Controlling Multiple Modules with a Single Setup 1 1-7 Press the Edit Setup button to enter Edit Setup Mode . In this Mode, w e will alter the velocity ranges of the Zones in our Setup . See Edit Setup Mode on page 8-1 for more infor mation on the parameters of a Setup .
T utorials Controlling Multiple Modules with a Single Setup 1 1-8 Note that the SP5 is being used as the MIDI controller for all four of the modules . T o be able to control each of the four modules individually , we need to create a Setup with four non-ov erlapping Zones, eac h of which will control a particular module.

T roubleshooting Maintenance 12-1 Chapter 12 T roubleshooting Maintenance Aside from nor mal care in handling and use, your SP5 requires no regular maintenance . Clean with a soft cloth dampened with water . Never use abrasiv es or solvents as they ma y damage the unit’ s paint, markings, info strip and displa y lens .
T roubleshooting Common Problems 12-2 The power adapter ratings does not match the required ratings for the SP5. The power adapter specications are: 15V DC , 1.0 amp, center pin positiv e, 5.5mm OD, 2.5mm ID coax type plug . Obtain a compatible pow er adapter.
T roubleshooting Common Problems 12-3 If there is no sound from your SP5, chec k if one of the following might be the issue: The volume slider is tur ned down. Slowly push the v olume slider up . Headphones or an audio cable is plugged into one of the Headphones jacks.
T roubleshooting MIDI Problems 12-4 The input to the audio system is set for low impedance instead of high impedance. Set the v olume of the audio or mixer to the low est level, change the impedance setting, and then slowly turn up the volume of the audio system or mixer .
T roubleshooting Pedal Problems 12-5 Pedal Problems Before you consult this section, be sure to read Connecting P edals on page 2-5 . Switch Pedal Problems If you are having problems with connecting or using a switc h pedal, check if one of the following might be the issue: • Sustain or Sostenuto is stuc k “on”.
T roubleshooting If None of the Above... 12-6 F or best results , use a Kurzweil CC-1 contin uous control pedal, av ailable from your dealer . T he CC-1 meets all of the requirements described abov e at an economical price. A continuous control pedal should ha ve an impedance between 5,000 and 100,000 ohms .
T roubleshooting If None of the Above... 12-7 Diagnostics Y ou will most likely not need to use the System Mode diagnostic operations in nor mal cases . These operations are mostly used at the factor y and ser vice centers b y engineers for troubleshooting hardware problems .
