2 1.1 – Intr oducon Looking for a w ay to c onnect your serial devices to a USB port on your USB equipped Window s computer? The Ke yspan USB 4-Port Serial Adapt er is a simple, inexpensive, and reliable w ay to mak e this connecon. The Adapter plugs in to any USB port on your PC.
3 2.1 – Capabilies The Ke yspan USB 4-Port Serial Adapt er provides FOUR male DB9 serial ports which support RS -232 asynchronous communica ons at data r ates up to 230 Kbps. K eyspan USB 4-Port Serial Adap ter Ports The four DB9 ports on the K eyspan Adapt er are seen as COM ports by Windows.
4 3.1 – Inst allaon Instrucons Inst alling the USB 4-Port Serial Adapter Sow are for Window s Operang S yst ems Step 1 – Insert the K eyspan Serial Adapter CD-R OM. T urn your computer ON. When y our computer st arts up, place the Key span USB 4-Port Serial Adapter CD int o the CD- ROM drive.
5 4.1 – Conguring Y our Serial Device Prior to using your serial de vice (modem, UPS, etc.) with the Ke yspan USB 4-Port Serial Adapt er , you must: Connect your serial device (har dware) to the K eyspan port. 1. Congure y our serial device’ s soware to use the K eyspan port.
6 4.1 – Conguring Y our Serial Device The COM port number and its COM port s tatus message ar e very important to c onguring your serial device. The COM port st atus is the sta te of the Key span serial port. All serial ports have two s tates, BUS Y (In Use) or IDLE (Av ailable).
7 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant Besides the requir ed drivers, the K eyspan USB 4-Port Serial Adap ter soware ins taller installs an applic aon called Ke yspan Serial Assistan t .
8 Adapter St atus T ab 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant The Adapter St atus tab in the Ke yspan Serial Assistan t displays the st atus of your K eyspan adapter . Specically , it shows the COM port number (C OM1, COM2, etc.) and the COM port s tatus ( IDLE or BUSY ).
9 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant The Adapter pull down menu is used t o select which USB 4-Port Serial Adapter y ou would lik e to congure. If y ou only hav e one Keyspan USB 4-P ort Serial Adapter , you will not need to chang e the selecon.
10 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant There ar e 3 types of tests: TX Only: Use this tes t to test only the tr ansmit (T x) signals of the Keyspan adap ter . Ext. LoopBack: Use this tes t for sending and receiving dat a. This test sends dat a out the selected serial port and waits to r eceive it via a special Loopback connector .
11 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant Port Mapping T ab The Port Mapping t ab in the Keyspan Serial Assis tant allows y ou to change how COM port number s are assigned to your K eyspan adapter . The following is an e xplanaon of the item in this tab.
12 5.1 – K eyspan Serial Assis tant The Adapter P ort Mapping Mode box allows y ou to change the beha vior of how Keyspan C OM port numbers are assigned when you connect the K eyspan adapt er to a dier ent USB port than the one it was originally connected t o.

It detects if the Ke yspan driver is installed and whe ther or not a Keyspan adapt er is connected. The Clear Log Window buon will clear the Adapt er Status/Error E vents bo x.
